Impact Of The World Trade Organization ( Wto ) On The...
Few environmentalists have positive things to say on the impact of the World Trade Organization
(WTO) on the environment. WTO legal obligations are frequently cited as the most significant
impediment to a range of environmental initiatives, including notably meaningful international
coordination to combat climate change, particularly through carbon tax initiatives, and imposition of
electronic waste disposal export bans. In this vein, adverse findings of WTO dispute panels on
environmental conservation measures tend to attract the ire of international civil society. The tensions
between liberal trade and environmental protection can be traced back to the days of the General
Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) of 1947, which pre dated the WTO. Under the GATT 1947,
trade and environment disputes tended to be resolved through diplomatic channels. The WTO
Agreements were intended to provide a more predictable and legalistic means by which to resolve
such disputes, in exchange for deeper commitments on domestic regulation, a domain historically
deemed off limits to international disciplines. Two of these agreements in particular, the Agreement on
Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT Agreement) and the Agreement on Sanitary and Phytosanitary
Measures (SPS Agreement), introduced binding disciplines with serious implications for domestic
environmental decision making, a subset of domestic regulation. The expectation was that the
depolitization of WTO disputes would afford more

FIJI Water was singled out as a primary example of water insanity due to the fact that the product was
shipped from a remote island in the South Pacific to its main markets thousands of miles away. In
response to this protest, the company launched a new promotion campaign under a slogan every drop
is green, only to be immediately accused by environmentalist groups of engaging in greenwashing
activities. The claim was also challenged by government watchdogs in some countries where FIJI
Water was sold. At the same time, the company s relationships with the Fiji government were at the
lowest point. The government accused FIJI Water of transfer price manipulations and seized hundreds
of containers carrying FIJI brand water. After assessing the company s contribution to the Fiji
economy, the government tried to impose a hefty tax on exported water and the company took the
drastic action of laying off its employees in Fiji to pressure the government to repeal the initial 20
cents a litre tax that would have greatly reduced FIJI Water s profitability by increasing its tax bill by
about FJ$50 million per year. The company intensified its PR activities, focusing on its contributions
to the local communities, to show how good a corporate citizen it was in Fiji. THE PRODUCT
CONCEPT AND COMPANY BACKGROUND The product concept was developed in the early
nineties by David Gilmour, the Canadian born owner and founder of Fiji s renowned Wakaya Island

The United States Should Go From The Metric System
The debate on whether or not the United States should go to the metric system has been ongoing for
years and still to this day the United States uses the English System of Measurements. It includes the
inch, foot, yard and mile, along with many other units of measurement. The United States is one of
three countries that still use other systems of measurement instead of going metric. The other two
countries that have not adopted to using the metric system are Liberia and Burma, also known as
Myanmar.
The metric system is simply a unit of measure. It is used in medicine, science and engineering. This
system makes it easier to make conversions by moving the decimal either to the left or right. It also
has stability by using prefixes and each unit has only one value, regardless of what is being measured
or who is measuring. There are fewer measures to learn in the metric system than in the English
Customary System. Instead of having to remember that there are 12 inches in a foot, 3 feet in a yard
and 1760 yards in a mile, it would be much easier to multiply or divide a number by a certain power
of 10.
It would be much easier for the United States to communicate to the rest of the world by switching to
the metric system. Everything that is important to the future of our country and economy, such as
industry, science business and exports, is already using the metric system. Units in the English system
of measurements such as the foot and gallon are all based on the

Cromwell s Responsibility For Expansions And Effectiveness...
Cromwell s Responsibility For Expansions And Effectiveness Of Government Between 1530 and
1539
The most influential and controversial thesis concerning Cromwell s role in the revolution in
government in the 1530s was Elton s The Tudor Revolution in Government . In this work, Elton asses
Cromwell as the most remarkable revolutionary in English history. . Elton argued that Cromwell
seized the unique opportunity presented by Henry VIII s martial problems to turn England into a
unified, independent sovereign state, ruled by a constitutional monarch through national and
bureaucratic institutions. This is certainly true to an extent however it could be argued that these
changes were reactionary ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The appointments of both the Earl of Norfolk and Charles Brandon, Earl of Suffolk, seem indicative
of a politically and religiously conservative council. These facts obviously take responsibility for these
changes away from Cromwell.
The importance of the executive Privvy Council is that it gave drive and continuity to royal
government owing to the stability of its membership no longer did the impetus need to come from the
monarch or chief minister. This would be particularly important after Cromwell s downfall in the
1540s, when Henry did not allow another Cromwell to emerge and his powers were failing, and even
more after 1547 when Edward VI was a boy, succeeded by two women. The Privvy Council took over
responsibility for the executive. It had certainly taken over the management of the day to day business
on behalf of the monarch by Elizabeth s reign, but it is most doubtful that this occurred in the 1530s or
that Cromwell planned it.
Several other objections have been raised to Elton s assessment of the development of the Privvy
Council. Elton argued that Cromwell was able by the reorganisation of the haphazard medieval
Council into a more formally constituted board of government; and by the promotion of the principal
secretary (himself) to get himself appointed the chief executive and co ordinating minister. Rather than
judging it to be part of Cromwell s plan to

My Intentions As A College Student
The purpose of this paper will be to reflect my intentions as a college student and what I will do in my
time as a student to achieve my future profession. To help achieve my goal, I will understand my
responsibilities and prospects as a college student. I will earn the skills and qualifications to become a
candidate in this new, competitive work field. While I am in college, I will finish the MBTI (career
assessment) and Strong Inventory Interest (personality assessment). Then, I will research possible
careers within my major. And, in my last attempt to resolve in a career, I will choose one to help
navigate where my actions should be placed in hopes of it to help me become a qualified candidate.
Also, I will retain the minimum of excelling in my courses and hold my position in the honors
program. I will join organizations and activities in which may help build my resume.
International business allows a large ray of opportunities to those who pursue it which is why it was
the best option for when I had to choose my major during my college application. With this major, I
am able to apply the skills I learned to a large field and find a job with flexible works so I can use to
learn other skills. In international business, it is critical for one to know multiple languages and have a
vast knowledge of different cultures that may be needed one day in the work field. Also, in
international business, the worker is expected to travel around the world in hopes of peaceful

Message Complexity Paper
Messages How does one determine the meaning of the world around them? It is not all that simple.
Messages are delivered via symbols amongst other factors such as speech, written documents, etc.
They help an individual assign meaning to the society around them. With that, a message can mean
multiple things depending on the listeners and how it is conveyed. In my case, as a Communication
major, I have learned about messages via speech giving, readings from Communication textbooks, and
in class notes. My public speaking course (Speech 105), is probably the class, within my major, that
taught me the most about delivering messages. For instance, in the class, the first speech assigned was
an impromptu speech. The other students and I had to select ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

I could stop watching a television show about astronomy and physics, for the reason that I find it too
complex. Even so, outside of the astronomy case, many complex messages can be made simpler. This
is true of a multitude of day to day interactions. Depending on a person s words, gestures, etc., a
whole message can be altered drastically and made up of many layers. The layering of messages is a
concept that was talked about in this Sophomore Seminar class (Communication 295). Much like an
onion, messages can have a multitude of layers. Listeners and/or receivers, depending on the method
the message is delivered in, may interpret a message differently. Interpretation may even depend on
combining multiple meanings to construct a final connotation. Furthermore, the way one understands
a message, depends mostly on the way the message is received to begin

Bernie Madoff s Unethical Behavior
Bernie Madoff is a perfect example of how unethical behavior can turn into corruption. Madoff, a
former investment and stockbroker, was formally introduced to the world as the sole operator in the
largest Ponzi scheme on record. Madoff turned his financial management company into a colossal
Ponzi scheme that swindled billions, from thousands of his investors. According to federal
investigators, Madoff s Ponzi scheme began as early as the 1980 s and continued to operate under
sheer deception and utter lies. Madoff s powerful presence, narcissism, voracity and unethical
behavior had him pleading guilty to eleven federal offenses, including: wire fraud, securities fraud,
money laundering, mail fraud, false statements, lying under oath, larceny, ... Show more content on

In this case, it appears that Madoff had many friends and family members who were involved in the
fraud. Speculate about how likely it is that Madoff s own sons, who were employees of the firm, knew
nothing of the fraud as they stated.
Madoff s sons were highly suspected of being aware of the fraud, but they both adamantly denied this,
and charges were never brought because one son killed himself while the other died of cancer. A
federal investigation was on the cusp of charging the son who died of cancer with tax evasion
resulting from the Ponzi scheme before his death this year it was reported.
4. Explain the ethical issues that are associated with running a family owned business. Are these issues
present within Madoff s firm?
Ethical issues associated with running a family owned business, is a lack of checks and balances,
because of familial ties. In Bernie Madoffs case, many of the primary people in the business were
family members such as his chief compliance officer, which is supposed to reassure investors that
everything is as it should be. Madoff s chief compliance officer was his niece, Shana Madoff. In
addition, she had married a former employee of the US Securities and Exchange Commission who had
a role the investigation of Madoff in 1999. The husband may have been able to coach Shana Madoff
on how to avoid raising red flags that attract

how is it formed? Gas is an air like fluid substance which expands freely to fill any space available,
irrespective of its quantity. Gas is formed by microscopic plants and animals living in the ocean
millions of years ago. Throughout their life they absorbed energy from the sun, which was stored as
carbon molecules. As soon as these plant and animals died, they sank to the bottom of the sea. Over
millions if years, after many of layers of sediment and other plants and bacteria were formed. As they
were buried deeper, heat and pressure increased and gas was formed. After gas was formed, they
migrated through tiny pores in the surrounding rock. 1.2 The leviathan field This report is about the
newly discovered source of gas, located between Cyprus and Israel, called the Leviathan Gas Field.
The Leviathan gas field is one of the largest offshore gas discoveries of the decade, it is located 29

Harry Potter And Grendel Research Paper
I was an only child for much of my childhood and we moved around a lot, so while I was growing up,
books were my constant and usually only friends. The books I ve selected for my bookshelf are what I
feel my progression in taste of books looks like in relation to my personal growth.
I included Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban because it s my favorite out of the entire series,
both book and movie. Harry Potter was such a huge part of my life while I was growing up. It was this
universal cultural phenomenon that I was so excited to be part of. I grew up reading the series and
being so excited every time the next movie or the next book came out and I sorely regret not attending
a Harry Potter premiere when I had the chance.
Notes from Underground and Grendel were books that were assigned reading in high school but that I
greatly enjoyed. Grendel had such an impact on me and it s still my absolute favorite book of all time.
I cite Grendel as the starting point of my foray into existentialism and philosophy in general. Grendel
has that simple yet profound language that really resonates with me. Existentialism is a Humanism
and The Sorrows of Young Werther were also books that were assigned reading but in college. I
enjoyed both very much despite their differing forms: Existentialism is a Humanism being based on a
lecture and The Sorrows of Young Werther being an epistolary novel. ... Show more content on

Richard Hoover Little Miss Sunshine
Little Miss Sunshine
Little Miss Sunshine directed by Valerie Faris and Jonathon Dayton, is a film about the dysfunctional
Hoover family, who along their journey to California, learn that supporting their family is more
important than personal success. The director s purpose was to show the audience that people cannot
be defined as winners or losers. Instead it was to demonstrate how family relationships are important
for our own happiness. A character who was used to develop this message was Richard Hoover. In the
beginning of the film, Richard is all about winning and following his 9 step plan on being a winner .

he and Dwayne tell Sheryl that they don t want Olive to go on stage. A two shot of Dwayne and
Richard standing together, draws attention to how these two characters, who never seem to get along,
are now working together to protect Olive. This makes the viewer aware that Richard has changed, as
he is more focused on being a father and protecting Olive than he has been throughout the film. He no
longer cares about Olive winning a beauty pageant. When Olive performs her scandalous dance,
Richard is the first one to go on stage to support and protect her. A shaky, hand held camera is used
when Richard runs onto the stage, emphasizing the spontaneous decision. This positions the viewer to
feel impressed at how Richard is protecting his daughter. Richard dances on stage in an embarrassing
act of failure; he is willing to be a loser if it means supporting Olive. From Richards act of support the
audience is reminded that family and accepting who you are, is important for our own

The Hearts of Men Essay
The ways of men are broad in their spectrum, Shakespeare has shown me this. I have seen the most
devious acts and have witnessed men in heroic acts in dramatic display of courageous ascension.
Nevertheless, there are ones who have achieved a level of mediocrity or complacency throughout his
works, but all these states of action are relative as the minds that generate the impetus. The lowest of
the low I have witnessed personally, in these works, and on an international scale. My interactions
with fellow brothers has shown me this, what more can I say, some men are cowardly, self centered,

Pop Music And Its Impact On South Korea Essay
K pop is a musical genre originating in South Korea that is characterized by a wide variety of
audiovisual elements. Although it comprises all genres of popular music within South Korea, the term
is more often used in a narrower sense to describe a modern form of South Korean pop music
covering a wide range of styles including dance pop, pop ballad, electronic, rock, metal, hip pop music
and R B. K pop gaining popularity in East Asia in the late 1990s, and spreading to whole Asia and
World, via the Hallyu culture. K pop, J pop and C pop become to the leading musical category in Asia.
The biggest four entertainment company in Korea are SM Entertainment, YG Entertainment, JYP

The Machiavellian Struggle in Spain and England during the...
The time of the reformation was a time of heavy politics, political wars, and religious attacks and
conflicts. This was a period of growth for some countries, such as England, and a time of decline for
other countries like Spain. These two particular countries, England and Spain, had two very powerful
rulers who helped determine the fate of their nations. Phillip II of Spain was born into a very powerful
family of extremely Machiavellian heritage. He had control of the Netherlands, Spain, parts of the
North and South Americas, and parts of Asia and Brazil. He was also extremely Catholic and loyal to
the Catholic Church. Queen Elizabeth I of England inherited a small country divided between
Lutherans and Catholics, but she would turn out to be one of the greatest rulers of England in history.
These two rulers would go head to head until their deaths, and while England rose up, Spain began to
decline. Although Phillip II of Spain was a very Machiavellian ruler, Elizabeth I of England was much
more Machiavellian, for Phillip of Spain was not governed by necessity, as Machiavelli advised; he
was feared by his subjects, not loved; and Queen Elizabeth I of England was an effective ruler and
near perfect example of the Machiavellian Prince. Phillip, though a great ruler, did not allow his
actions to be governed by necessity, but rather his religious ambitions. Phillip, His Most Catholic
Majesty, was very serious about religion. When the Dutch, within his empire, began

What Would Happen If We Have Full Freedom Research Paper
What would happen if we had full freedom? What would need to happen to have full freedom?
Freedom means we are free and able to do whatever we desire. We do have freedom as of now, but it
is limited. We have rules and laws in place that are meant to be followed. They are here to protect the
well being of everyone and thing. These laws are not necessarily bad but it just doesn t allow full
freedom to come forth. There are some laws that have been revoked because we realized they were
just plain wrong or it put too much restraint on freedom. The laws we have are not perfect but we
know and allow it because of the benefits. There are some cons to the limits we put on ourselves but it

We need to improve before we improve the world. Once we do that then we would be able to properly
work together for peace and freedom. To do this would mean that other countries improved
themselves too. When this finally happens and we think we are good enough to work with each other
we will try. As we try to work together we realize we can t.
Why? Why can t we work together when we all bettered ourselves. The reason is because we all
improved on ourselves but we did in different ways. We improved in our own beliefs and ideas.
Nothing would have changed we would have our freedom than has been bettered for us not for the
entire world. The conflicts would still be there just like before. The only thing we can do is accept that
we will never have peace between everybody.
The freedom we have is still limited by peace. That doesn t mean we should keep things the same we
still should improve ourselves for our future. We just need to know everyone doesn t have the same
attitude. When we mention freedom everyone thinks of it differently. Our nation definition of freedom
is different than others that why we fight for it. We still fight for our limited freedom. It may be

Pan s Labyrinth Surrealism
The early Francoist period of Spain s history was filled with violence, discourse, and the beginning of
a new government. Soon after the end of the Spanish Civil War, there was still fighting going on
between the victorious Nationalists and the Republicans. The fantasy film Pan s Labyrinth depicts this
time period of Spain in a surrealist setting as it follows the adventures of a young girl, Ofelia, as she
goes between a dark underground world and the real world. While the film is often surrealist, it also
displays the violent ways of the early Francoist period in the camp of Ofelia s stepfather, the Falangist

The Effects Of Environmental Influence On The Environment
Does human interference benefit or hurt the environment and does human advancement necessarily
mean environmental degradation? Earth contains multiple ecosystems, from the dense forests to the
vast grasslands, the blazing hot deserts to the frigid tundra, and from the freshwaters to the seawaters.
Webster s Dictionary defines ecosystem as the complex of a community of organisms and its
environment functioning as an ecological unit . Each individual ecosystem has its own inhabitants
along with its own special environment. The inhabitants, whether it be animals or plants, have adapted
to specifically thrive in their respectful conditions. Humans, on the other hand, can bounce around to
and from different ecosystems, even if it is only for a short time. Technological advances have
empowered us to survive and thrive even in the harshest conditions. Whenever we move from place to
place, we seem to leave our mark. With technology continuing to push the envelope and human
population rising, our reach continues to grow along with our carbon footprint. In return, our
expansion may be causing nature to retreat. So how can we combat this decline? In today s modern
age, human interference may be necessary to preserve what s left of nature because of what happens to
the environment in consequence to human advancements. The world is your oyster, figuratively or
literally? As hunters and gatherers, our ancestors thrived off of the land they lived on, and took what it

Black Hole Research Paper
Black Holes A simple star with low fuel turns into a strong, powerful black hole in space with 4 times
more mass than the sun. Discovered in 1916 by Albert Einstein, a black hole is an area of space time
showing very strong effects, that nothing can escape from the black hole. Space time is the belief that
there is no time in space, so there is no aging or time whatsoever. There are three different types of
black holes. Stellar mass, supermassive, and intermediate. All three are very strong, but the
supermassive is currently the strongest reported. Not all black holes are large, but extremely powerful.
The supermassive black holes are the biggest type of black hole and most of the time are found in the
center of massive galaxies. Stellar mass black holes are formed by a star collapsing. Intermediate
black holes are stronger than stellar mass black holes, but weaker than supermassive. Supermassive is
the least common black hole there is. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

he frees himself from his parent s restriction and goes into manhood. As he enters the hotel he is again

he s talking to the old ladies from the wrong party shows the sweat on his face symbolizing how
nervous he is. Later, the waiter ignores him symbolizing that Ben can t seem to have authority of any
sort, rather he is always the one subjected to authority. The next shot is a reflection of him on the glass
of the table surrounded by alcohol and cigarettes, things that indict he is transforming. The sudden
appearance of Mrs. Robinson in the image and showing the two in an inverted shot says a lot about
how Ben s life is about to turn around or upside down. As Ben tries to get a room, he still limited by
society and societal thoughts, we notice that from the director s extensive use of limited space

Analysis Of William Faulkner s A Rose For Emily
A Rose for Emily
William Faulkner s A Rose for Emily tells a story about the life of a woman who grows up in a small
southern town shortly after the turn of the 20th century. He tells the reader about the struggles that Ms.
Emily and town of Jefferson face in trying to move on from their past and adjusting to the inevitable
changes that time brings.
Hans H Skei writes in his critical essay that A Rose for Emily is the first story about Faulkner s
townspeople in any real sense, and it is the first story in which a community point of view through a
first person plural narrator (Skei). In reading Faulkner s story, the reader can see that when the narrator
uses we , that he is referring to the people of the town. By doing this, the reader gets a sense that even
though the title of the story has the main character s name in it, Faulkner considers the townspeople to
be just as important as Emily in A Rose for Emily . In the story Faulkner writes how both of these
characters struggle with the changes that occur throughout the passing years.
Managing change is difficult, but inevitable. Changes also affect people differently. While some
people thrive, others have a harder time in adjusting. While describing Ms. Emily s house, the narrator
tells the reader that cotton mills and warehouses are encroaching on her house. Ms. Emily s house is
described in the story as a style from some years past. In fact, her house was built in the 1870 s. What
once had been a residential area of the town, is now turning into a thriving industrial district. This
suggests to the reader that the town is progressing while Ms. Emily is stuck in the past. However, the
reader can see from the first part of the story that the people of the town have not been able to moved
on from their past either.
The story starts out at Ms. Emily s funeral. The narrator also tells the reader that for Ms. Emily s
funeral, everyone that lived in the town showed up. During the 1800 s and earlier, weddings and
funerals in southern towns were treated as events where everyone was included. But during the time
period of the story, weddings and funerals were only for close friends and family. Faulkner also writes

PIPAssessment for Ben Hall
PIP Assessment Ben Hall
Ben Hall is believed be been born in Maitland, New South Wales on the 9th of May 1837. His parents
were both ex convicts, Eliza Somers and Benjamin Hall, who sadly passed away in 1951 which
explains why he robbed many different people in New South Wales, and became one of Australia s
most wanted bushrangers that Australia has ever had, to date.
Ben then became a stockman and sold cattle to all of the miners on the diggings at Lambing Flat. Be
was known as a hard working and honest man who never gave up if e was given a task. Ben caught
wild cows and wild horses that were located in nearby hills. Ben Hall began running his own butcher
shop in 1852 in a small town near Murrurundi, but he started getting into trouble with the local police
for stealing horses and cattle. Later on in life, he got married to a lady named Bridget Walsh in
Bathurst.
In 1862, his life was then changed forever as his wife left him for another man and took their son,
Henry with her. He went back to his home to find that his farm had been burnt down along with a
large sum of his farm. He also came back to find all of his cattle and livestock dead of starvation as
they had cruelly been left in the stockyards. Hall then lost interest in cattle and saw no need to live as
he became closer to Frank Gardiner, a commonly known bushranger in the area.
He then started to get himself in to trouble with the police when he was arrested for highway robbery,
but was released when

Milgram Experiment Unethical
The (Unethical?) Milgram Experiment The Milgram experiment was an experiment that took place in
1961 at Yale University, created by Stanley Milgram. The experiment was conducted to test the public
s obedience to authority, especially in circumstances in which they are told to participate in activities
that are clearly wrong. In this experiment, subjects were told that they were to be administering shocks
to another subject. This subject happened to be not a subject at all, but an actor. As the experiment
went on, the subjects were told to administer more and more painful shocks, and the actor expressed
how they were in severe physical pain, not to mention at a possible risk to their health, although not
actually being shocked. Those who ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In fact, the experiment heavily relied on deception, and would have quite possibly been jeopardized

reinforce concepts through punishment (shocks) on a learner . The deception involved in this and
similar experiments during this time was enough to spark a serious conversation about research ethics
during the time, and how the guidelines surrounding them needed to be drastically improved

Economic Effects Of The Columbian Exchange
The Columbian Exchange brought diseases in the two countries and was also the forerunner for
eliminating Native Americans in North America, but Europe acquired new ways to develop their
economy further than what it already was. This discovery was what led to Europe s powers early on in
the 1400 s. Europe s discoveries led to the modernization of cultures along with great societies such as
the New World, which became the country it is today. The Columbian Exchange refers to the time
period in which the Native Americans of North America traded plants, animals, livestock, diseases,
and new modernized technology with the Europeans. Not only were these things spread between the
two nations, but the word was spread that North America was a new place for world to come and
make their own. The early days of colonizing America was not successful for most of the countries
wanting a part of it. These countries included England, Spain, and Portugal. The reasons behind them
not finding prosperity in this land was because it was unchartered and no one knew what the land
contained. The people struggled with adapting different and untried farming methods. Most of the
exploring that was done brought many issues between the Native Americans and the new coming
country. Provided that the Natives didn t want new settlers on their land, and the settlers didn t want
any issues with claiming this new land as their own. Before any of Natives had issues with the

In The Coal Mines Summary
The photo labeled In the Coal Mines was very interesting, because the children are in a factory
working. In the portrait the children are in a row of five or more and they are completing their own
task. The children in the photo appear to be young boys. The children in the photo seem tired because
they are sitting on wood and they are hunched over while working. They also appear unhappy and
trained, because they are facing forward, not talking, or smiling. All the children are focused on
getting their work done. Every row of children has an adult or someone older than them behind them

Of Mice And Men Movie Vs Book
Of Mice and Men Movie Review
In this adaptation of the book Of Mice and Men, Gary Sinise puts on one of his best performances
ever and directs a fantastic film. The film is able to expand on the novel in a successful way. The
casting in the movie is exceptional and one of the highlights of the whole film. The movie of Mice and
Men is the best adaptation of the book and is a must see film.
In the movie Of Mice and Men, the characters portray the book accurately. In the film the main
character Lennie is played by John Malkovich, who overreacts in the film creating an image of Lennie
that is nothing like the book. In the film he is not able to create as much sympathy in the book as John
Malkovich doesn t play the role well. On the other hand, George played by Gary Sinise, ... Show more

For example, one of the only parts of the book that truly emphasizes Lennie s incredible strength is
when he crushes Curley s hand, but in the film adaptation Gary Sinise adds an extra scene that truly
shows the extent of Lennie s strength. In other instances, Gary Sinise interprets some scenes in a
slightly abnormal way which can sometimes result in success but in this film the different
interpretations negatively affect the suspense in important scenes. In general, Gary Sinise directed this
adaptation admirably.
The film has subtle undertones of symbolization and big ideas . For example, throughout the film the
viewer can easily notice how animals are a recurring theme throughout the film. In most instances, the
animal in the film was not featured in the book. The director makes the symbols obvious so the viewer
can easily understand these symbols. The director is able to have the symbols in the film provoke
more thought, similar to what the book was able to accomplish. Throughout, the film Gary Sinise
succeeds in adding in extra symbols that add to the overall competence of the

Technological Model Of The Technological Environment
Technological Factor
Based on the model of the technological environment, there are three dimensions to conceptualize the
changes in industries, technology, process, and impetus. New technologies have had an enormous
impact across all aspects of the fitness industry, all the way from marketing and payment transactions
to biometric evaluation.
New technology is often synonymous with advances in science more specifically, computer science.
This is a logical assumption given that we live in a digital era. However, technology has a scope that
extends beyond the constraints of the computer. Within general definitions, technology encompasses
the practical application of knowledge to design and implement systems that help solve human
problems. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Creating a safe workout environment for members goes hand in hand with personal comfort.
Advances in green, environmentally friendly products, such as low VOC paints and high efficiency
HVAC systems, have allowed gym owners to incorporate these into their design while enhancing their
members experiences. Research on the feasibility in terms of design capacity and cost effectiveness of
these systems is the first step in the implementation process.
As for the process perspective, streamlining efficiency is an important factor from an operational
standpoint. Advances in such things as web and software based entry systems/membership programs
and the popularity of the Internet have led to a new digital era. Now, virtually every form within the
fitness center can be offered digitally. Other factors affecting the front desk/check in process include
such things as the rise in popularity of digital locker locks. Nowadays, the large amount of space
dedicated to key cards and member files has been replaced by a single computer terminal.
Another example of technology streamlining efficiency is the rise of asset management software built
into some of the new cardiovascular equipment. This software flags equipment malfunctions by
sending a service needed message to the appropriate party via the Internet. With this system in place,
club owners can cut down on the time it takes for equipment repair. With both of these examples, as

1.8 Connection
Connections Report 1.8 Connections
The theme of love connection between people is a very important part of life. I choose this theme as it
is a very relevant and relatable subject for many people in our society. The four texts I chose were: the
fictional novel Delirium , by Lauren Oliver, the song Blank Space by Taylor Swift, song Same Love
by Macklemore and fictional novel Girl Online , by Zoe Sugg. There was a strong connection of love
between two people in all of these texts.
The first text that I looked at that showed the connection of love was Delirium. This novel discusses
the connection of love. Love is the main theme of this novel. The main character ... Show more

This song is about the struggles society creates for people identifying as a homosexual and discusses
equality and discrimination of people that like the same sex. Macklemore was driven to write this song
because of the issue of equal marriage right and the use of gay as degrading word in society and in the
hip hop industry. He wanted to set an example for others in the music industry, and help change the
stereotypes of homosexuality. As Macklemore writes in his song a bunch of stereotypes all in my head
this shows that society riddles our brains into thinking that it isn t alright to be gay, when really it is.
These stereotypes make it hard for people to feel accepted about their sexuality. This song discusses
how gay is used in an insultive way as quoted in the lyrics; If I was gay I would think hip hop hates
me, Have you read the YouTube comments lately, Man that s gay Gets dropped on the daily, We ve
become so numb to what we re sayin These examples show the connection of love, but in a different
way to what we would usually expect. This song has a different view on the connection of love
compared to other books with the theme of love, as it is about homosexuality rather than
heterosexuality. In my opinion I think what Macklemore is trying to convey is very smart, and I
believe that there should be equality on who you love. I also thing that the words such as gay shouldn t
be used with such negative connotations, and I m sure many others in our society would

Seating Placement for Instruction
The classroom arrangement is the typical rows and columns. There was a total of 22 students in
Michael s liberal arts class. Michael does have preferential seating and sits in the front row in the

Instructional Strategies, Accommodations, and Modifications
Michael s teacher uses different types of instructional strategies to keep Michael on task. The teacher

The Construction Industry
Construction industry has long been criticized for its poor performance. After major reports such as
Latham (1994) and Egan (1998), major studies are carried out in different procurement routes,
management system and technique and construction method. Beyond these, it has been suggested, that
softer factors such as organisational culture also have a significant impact on performance (Nicolini,
2002). The concept of organisation culture is a popular part of general management since early 1980s.
But in construction industry with its project based environment, innovative procurement and business

Furthermore, Zhang and Anita (2006) studies on national level, argued that there is significant

Adolescent Initiation Portrayed in Araby
Araby tells the story of an adolescent boy s initiation into adulthood. The story is narrated by a mature
man reflecting upon his adolescence and the events that forced him to face the disillusioning realities
of adulthood. The minor charac
ters play a pivotal role in this initiation process. The boy observes the
hypocrisy of adults in the priest and Mrs. Mercer; and his vain, self centered uncle introduces him to
another disillusioning aspect of adulthood. The boy s infatuation with the girl ultimately ends in
disillusion
ment, and Joyce uses the specific example of the boy s disillusionment with love as a
metaphor for disillusionment with life itself. From the beginning, the boy ... Show more content on

He idolizes her as if she were the Virgin Mary: her figure defined by the half opened door . . . The
light from the lamp opposite our door caught the white curve of her neck, lit up her hair that rested
there, and falling, lit up the hand upon the railing. Yet even this image is sensual with the halo of light
accentuating the white curve of her neck. The language makes obvious that his attraction is physical
rather than spiritual: Her dress swung as she moved her body and the soft rope of her hair tossed from
side to side. His desire for her is strong and undeniable: her name was like a summons to all my
foolish blood ; my body was like a harp and her words and ges

that his love is pure. He is being hypocritical, although at this point he does not know it.
Hypocrisy is characteristic of the adults in this story. The priest is by far the most obvious offender.

Symbolism in The Lottery, by Shirley Jackson Essay example
When most people play the lottery today, they think about having wealth. Generally, people who win
are happy about it whether they win one dollar or a million. The lottery in our society has grown to
support education and it is often worth several million dollars. Usually, the winner of the lottery gains
a lot of recognition for the money they win. But what would happen if there was a small town where
people held a yearly lottery in which the winner was the member of the town who was not sacrificed?
This question is answered in Shirley Jackson s short story, The Lottery. In reading this story, and
reading literary criticism about the story, there were many symbols and much symbolism in this story.

Americans were moving back to a time where they wanted life to be simple and orderly. There was
also a need to go back to traditional values and a need for conformity (Miss Cellania). While people
enjoyed seeing the Cleveland Indians win the World Series, The Philadelphia Eagles win the NFL and
while they were being entertained by beautiful women like Lauren Bacall, Ava Gardner and Rita
Hayworth (PCM Entertainment and Trivia Network) Jackson was entertaining a different audience
through her short story. It was interesting that many people were upset with Jackson about this story.
One reason was because her publisher spread a rumor that Jackson was a practicing witch (Miss
Cellania). Although Jackson dabbled in mysticism and read tarot cards, the idea that she was a witch
was a joke. The Lottery was frightening during that time and it still is today. Jackson wanted to show
what happened when people blindly followed a tradition just because it was a tradition. The Lottery
revealed an uncomfortable truth about the human psyche and, in doing so, became a classic piece of
American Literature (Miss Celinnia).
3 Symbols and Symbolism in The Lottery There were many symbols in this short story. Many
researchers state that several symbols refer to Christianity. As an example, the last name of one of the
women, Mrs. Delacroix, was a French name meaning of the

I am tolerant, you are permissive, I have reasonable scruples, and you are a conservative. (Author

Does this sound like the thoughts of most of us? Many people think that they have to understand and
accept the religious beliefs of others in order to get along with them. Respecting someone s choice to
practice their religion does not mean that you must believe the same as they do. In today s society, we
are faced daily with choices on whether or not to tolerate the practices and actions of people around

them personally. If a person dresses in an offensive style or uses inappropriate conduct in the presence

Students claim that their beliefs are openly mocked in college classrooms around the country and the
professors do not encourage the same respect be shown for their religion as every other belief system
discussed in class. When religious leaders insist that public schools perform plays, such as the
Nativity, in the name of religious tolerance it should be examined to determine if it is a self serving
request. Would they also demand that the Battles of Krishna be re enacted? All children should be
taught of other religions and to learn the history of other religions, but not be required to act out
specifics from a particular religion. We may wish that state schools embraced our religious beliefs, but
must recognize that secularism in education is the beginning of religious tolerance, not the suppression
of it. The state system must use its non denominational status to educate children in all the major

Watching a Movie at Home vs. Theater Essay example
Movies are one of the biggest entertainment sources for anyone in the world, and for the same reason
film industry is the largest of any industries with India making the most number of movies per year
than any other country. People watch movies at home on their television or in the theaters on a big
screen where the film is been displayed with a movie projector onto a large projection screen at the
front of the auditorium. Watching a movie at home or in theater is an enjoyable experience for
everyone depending on personal preferences.

It can be easier for parents to exercise their control over children if they are watching a movie at
home. If a movie scene is not appropriate for a child, then they have the choice of fast forwarding it or
stopping the movie whereas one does not have that choice in the theater. Movie theaters make it more
difficult on parent s pockets by having a huge variety and display of goodies for children. The food
items are overly priced in a theater and that could be a big dent in the pocket if added on to the price
of entrance ticket.
Some theaters give people and option to go movie hopping where one can see as many movies with
one theater entrance purchase. This is very economical for people who wait for all their favorite
movies to accumulate and watch all of them together in day. This is difficult to do if one wants to wait
for the television channels to telecast them.
There is a broad variety of types of theaters available conventional theaters, IMAX and drive in s.
Going to a theater is a good change for a person in contrast to watching it at home. Theaters are a
popular dating spot for person any age. One can choose between the types of theater one wants to go
to and what suits their needs, but a home television might not be able to give you all these options.
One does not even have to spend extra money on special glasses or other accessories needed to watch

commercial actress brought Lohan into the spotlight at the age of three (Biography). Lindsay Lohan
was once known as a very talented actress; however, her drug addictions threatened her career and
nearly ruined her reputation. The star of more than 60 television spots and 100 print ads for clients like
Toys R Us and Duncan Hines helped Lohan land the film role of twin sisters in Disney s 1998 remake

scandals to rumors of her own struggles with bulimia. On May 26, 2007, Lohan was arrested after
crashing her Mercedes Benz into a tree in Beverly Hills (Biography). Eleven days after finishing a 46
day stint at Promises Rehab Clinic, the actress was sporting an electronic anklet as proof of a new
sober life and it seemed she might have straightened out. On her schedule was a taping of a Tonight
Show segment to promote her new movie, I Know Who Killed Me, and an afternoon tango lesson to
prepare for her next role in the romance Dare to Love Me. But she never made it to either
appointment. Around 1:30 that morning, Lohan took the wheel of a white SUV in pursuit of a vehicle
driven by Michelle Peck, the mother of Tarin Graham, one of her assistants and seemingly crashed all
hopes of a comeback. Responding to a call from Peck, claiming that someone a someone who turned
out to be Lohan was chasing her through the streets of Santa Monica, Calif., local police later arrested
Lohan for DUI (her blood alcohol level was .13; the legal limit is .08), driving with a suspended

  • 2. Impact Of The World Trade Organization ( Wto ) On The... Few environmentalists have positive things to say on the impact of the World Trade Organization (WTO) on the environment. WTO legal obligations are frequently cited as the most significant impediment to a range of environmental initiatives, including notably meaningful international coordination to combat climate change, particularly through carbon tax initiatives, and imposition of electronic waste disposal export bans. In this vein, adverse findings of WTO dispute panels on environmental conservation measures tend to attract the ire of international civil society. The tensions between liberal trade and environmental protection can be traced back to the days of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) of 1947, which pre dated the WTO. Under the GATT 1947, trade and environment disputes tended to be resolved through diplomatic channels. The WTO Agreements were intended to provide a more predictable and legalistic means by which to resolve such disputes, in exchange for deeper commitments on domestic regulation, a domain historically deemed off limits to international disciplines. Two of these agreements in particular, the Agreement on Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT Agreement) and the Agreement on Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures (SPS Agreement), introduced binding disciplines with serious implications for domestic environmental decision making, a subset of domestic regulation. The expectation was that the depolitization of WTO disputes would afford more ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

FIJI Water was singled out as a primary example of water insanity due to the fact that the product was shipped from a remote island in the South Pacific to its main markets thousands of miles away. In response to this protest, the company launched a new promotion campaign under a slogan every drop is green, only to be immediately accused by environmentalist groups of engaging in greenwashing activities. The claim was also challenged by government watchdogs in some countries where FIJI Water was sold. At the same time, the company s relationships with the Fiji government were at the lowest point. The government accused FIJI Water of transfer price manipulations and seized hundreds of containers carrying FIJI brand water. After assessing the company s contribution to the Fiji economy, the government tried to impose a hefty tax on exported water and the company took the drastic action of laying off its employees in Fiji to pressure the government to repeal the initial 20 cents a litre tax that would have greatly reduced FIJI Water s profitability by increasing its tax bill by about FJ$50 million per year. The company intensified its PR activities, focusing on its contributions to the local communities, to show how good a corporate citizen it was in Fiji. • 4. The United States Should Go From The Metric System The debate on whether or not the United States should go to the metric system has been ongoing for years and still to this day the United States uses the English System of Measurements. It includes the inch, foot, yard and mile, along with many other units of measurement. The United States is one of three countries that still use other systems of measurement instead of going metric. The other two countries that have not adopted to using the metric system are Liberia and Burma, also known as Myanmar. The metric system is simply a unit of measure. It is used in medicine, science and engineering. This system makes it easier to make conversions by moving the decimal either to the left or right. It also has stability by using prefixes and each unit has only one value, regardless of what is being measured or who is measuring. There are fewer measures to learn in the metric system than in the English Customary System. Instead of having to remember that there are 12 inches in a foot, 3 feet in a yard and 1760 yards in a mile, it would be much easier to multiply or divide a number by a certain power of 10. It would be much easier for the United States to communicate to the rest of the world by switching to the metric system. Everything that is important to the future of our country and economy, such as industry, science business and exports, is already using the metric system. Units in the English system of measurements such as the foot and gallon are all based on the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Cromwell s Responsibility For Expansions And Effectiveness Of Government Between 1530 and 1539 The most influential and controversial thesis concerning Cromwell s role in the revolution in government in the 1530s was Elton s The Tudor Revolution in Government . In this work, Elton asses Cromwell as the most remarkable revolutionary in English history. . Elton argued that Cromwell seized the unique opportunity presented by Henry VIII s martial problems to turn England into a unified, independent sovereign state, ruled by a constitutional monarch through national and bureaucratic institutions. This is certainly true to an extent however it could be argued that these changes were reactionary ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The appointments of both the Earl of Norfolk and Charles Brandon, Earl of Suffolk, seem indicative of a politically and religiously conservative council. These facts obviously take responsibility for these changes away from Cromwell. The importance of the executive Privvy Council is that it gave drive and continuity to royal government owing to the stability of its membership no longer did the impetus need to come from the monarch or chief minister. This would be particularly important after Cromwell s downfall in the 1540s, when Henry did not allow another Cromwell to emerge and his powers were failing, and even more after 1547 when Edward VI was a boy, succeeded by two women. The Privvy Council took over responsibility for the executive. It had certainly taken over the management of the day to day business on behalf of the monarch by Elizabeth s reign, but it is most doubtful that this occurred in the 1530s or that Cromwell planned it. Several other objections have been raised to Elton s assessment of the development of the Privvy Council. Elton argued that Cromwell was able by the reorganisation of the haphazard medieval Council into a more formally constituted board of government; and by the promotion of the principal secretary (himself) to get himself appointed the chief executive and co ordinating minister. • 7. Message Complexity Paper Messages How does one determine the meaning of the world around them? It is not all that simple. Messages are delivered via symbols amongst other factors such as speech, written documents, etc. They help an individual assign meaning to the society around them. With that, a message can mean multiple things depending on the listeners and how it is conveyed. In my case, as a Communication major, I have learned about messages via speech giving, readings from Communication textbooks, and in class notes. My public speaking course (Speech 105), is probably the class, within my major, that taught me the most about delivering messages. The layering of messages is a concept that was talked about in this Sophomore Seminar class (Communication 295). Much like an onion, messages can have a multitude of layers. The books I ve selected for my bookshelf are what I feel my progression in taste of books looks like in relation to my personal growth. I included Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban because it s my favorite out of the entire series, both book and movie. Harry Potter was such a huge part of my life while I was growing up. It was this universal cultural phenomenon that I was so excited to be part of. • 14. The Machiavellian Struggle in Spain and England during the... The time of the reformation was a time of heavy politics, political wars, and religious attacks and conflicts. This was a period of growth for some countries, such as England, and a time of decline for other countries like Spain. These two particular countries, England and Spain, had two very powerful rulers who helped determine the fate of their nations. Phillip II of Spain was born into a very powerful family of extremely Machiavellian heritage. He had control of the Netherlands, Spain, parts of the North and South Americas, and parts of Asia and Brazil. He was also extremely Catholic and loyal to the Catholic Church. Queen Elizabeth I of England inherited a small country divided between Lutherans and Catholics, but she would turn out to be one of the greatest rulers of England in history. These two rulers would go head to head until their deaths, and while England rose up, Spain began to decline. Although Phillip II of Spain was a very Machiavellian ruler, Elizabeth I of England was much more Machiavellian, for Phillip of Spain was not governed by necessity, as Machiavelli advised; he was feared by his subjects, not loved; and Queen Elizabeth I of England was an effective ruler and near perfect example of the Machiavellian Prince. Earth contains multiple ecosystems, from the dense forests to the vast grasslands, the blazing hot deserts to the frigid tundra, and from the freshwaters to the seawaters. Webster s Dictionary defines ecosystem as the complex of a community of organisms and its environment functioning as an ecological unit . Each individual ecosystem has its own inhabitants along with its own special environment. The inhabitants, whether it be animals or plants, have adapted to specifically thrive in their respectful conditions. Humans, on the other hand, can bounce around to and from different ecosystems, even if it is only for a short time. Technological advances have empowered us to survive and thrive even in the harshest conditions. Whenever we move from place to place, we seem to leave our mark. With technology continuing to push the envelope and human population rising, our reach continues to grow along with our carbon footprint. In return, our expansion may be causing nature to retreat. Hans H Skei writes in his critical essay that A Rose for Emily is the first story about Faulkner s townspeople in any real sense, and it is the first story in which a community point of view through a first person plural narrator (Skei). In reading Faulkner s story, the reader can see that when the narrator uses we , that he is referring to the people of the town. By doing this, the reader gets a sense that even though the title of the story has the main character s name in it, Faulkner considers the townspeople to be just as important as Emily in A Rose for Emily . In the story Faulkner writes how both of these characters struggle with the changes that occur throughout the passing years. Managing change is difficult, but inevitable. Changes also affect people differently. While some people thrive, others have a harder time in adjusting. While describing Ms. Emily s house, the narrator tells the reader that cotton mills and warehouses are encroaching on her house. Ms. Emily s house is described in the story as a style from some years past. In fact, her house was built in the 1870 s. What once had been a residential area of the town, is now turning into a thriving industrial district. This suggests to the reader that the town is progressing while Ms. Emily is stuck in the past. However, the reader can see from the first part of the story that the people of the town have not been able to moved on from their past either. The story starts out at Ms. Emily s funeral. The narrator also tells the reader that for Ms. Emily s funeral, everyone that lived in the town showed up. During the 1800 s and earlier, weddings and funerals in southern towns were treated as events where everyone was included. But during the time period of the story, weddings and funerals were only for close friends and family. Faulkner also writes the men through a sort of respectful ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Economic Effects Of The Columbian Exchange The Columbian Exchange brought diseases in the two countries and was also the forerunner for eliminating Native Americans in North America, but Europe acquired new ways to develop their economy further than what it already was. This discovery was what led to Europe s powers early on in the 1400 s. Europe s discoveries led to the modernization of cultures along with great societies such as the New World, which became the country it is today. The Columbian Exchange refers to the time period in which the Native Americans of North America traded plants, animals, livestock, diseases, and new modernized technology with the Europeans. Not only were these things spread between the two nations, but the word was spread that North America was a new place for world to come and make their own. The early days of colonizing America was not successful for most of the countries wanting a part of it. These countries included England, Spain, and Portugal. The reasons behind them not finding prosperity in this land was because it was unchartered and no one knew what the land contained. The people struggled with adapting different and untried farming methods. Most of the exploring that was done brought many issues between the Native Americans and the new coming country. The movie of Mice and Men is the best adaptation of the book and is a must see film. In the movie Of Mice and Men, the characters portray the book accurately. New technologies have had an enormous impact across all aspects of the fitness industry, all the way from marketing and payment transactions to biometric evaluation. New technology is often synonymous with advances in science more specifically, computer science. This is a logical assumption given that we live in a digital era. This song is about the struggles society creates for people identifying as a homosexual and discusses equality and discrimination of people that like the same sex. Macklemore was driven to write this song because of the issue of equal marriage right and the use of gay as degrading word in society and in the hip hop industry. He wanted to set an example for others in the music industry, and help change the stereotypes of homosexuality. As Macklemore writes in his song a bunch of stereotypes all in my head this shows that society riddles our brains into thinking that it isn t alright to be gay, when really it is. These stereotypes make it hard for people to feel accepted about their sexuality. This song discusses how gay is used in an insultive way as quoted in the lyrics; If I was gay I would think hip hop hates me, Have you read the YouTube comments lately, Man that s gay Gets dropped on the daily, We ve become so numb to what we re sayin These examples show the connection of love, but in a different way to what we would usually expect. This song has a different view on the connection of love compared to other books with the theme of love, as it is about homosexuality rather than heterosexuality. In my opinion I think what Macklemore is trying to convey is very smart, and I believe that there should be equality on who you love.
