The Challenges with Waste Diversion from Landfill in Scotland
The adverse degradation of the environment as a result of human activities such as the disposal of
waste to the environment in an unsustainable manner. About 70% of waste (controlled waste) is
land filled in Scotland .The need to develop more robust waste management techniques to ensure
that waste disposal to the environment is carried in such a way that it does not endanger human
health and the environment. Land fill contributes substantially to the rising greenhouse gas which
cause global warming. European Union Council, after series of public consultation with relevant
stakeholders, set up a legislation known as the EU WasteFramework directive (75/442/EEC) in
1975 .It was amended in 1991 and 2008.It aims at reducing waste to landfill... Show more content

In reference with the increase in population, there is also a corresponding increment of about 11 %
from 1996 to 2011.Rising household waste is associated with the increase in the number of
household generated within various councils in the WASG.The kind and amount of waste
generated in this area is highly enhanced by the economic, commercial and industrial activities.
Employment statistical data had shown that there has been a dramatic shift from industrial
activities to more commercial activities due to vast change in economic growth and commercial
activities accounting for major waste produced.
However, due to the low level of recycling and other practices in place to curb the wasted
produced in this area by local authorities, there has been a steady increase in the total waste
generated which was estimated at 5759 000 tonnes in 1998 with industrial waste taken the lead
and the MSW accounted for about 17%.As at 1998, about 96% of the total MSW were land filled
while leaving about 4% recycled. It implies that this area group largely depends on the landfill
options for their waste disposal. Approximately 60% of the MSW are transported to transfer
stations where the waste are bulked and shipped to landfill sites or incinerated. There

The Impact Of Teenagers In The 1950 s
The 1950 s was a time of great social change. The word, teen ager was recently coined and
applied to people aged thirteen to nineteen. During this decade, people s perception of youth and
adolescents drastically changed as children became more rebellious. Previous to 1950. society
consisted of two main stages of human development: children and adults. When the Baby Boom
started in 1946, producing more babies, a new eraof music, attitudes, practices, and dancebegan to
appeal to kids that did not feel socially accepted by adults in society. This was the start of the
teenage rebellion. With increased teenager presence came more disapproval because of rebellious
behaviour. Teenagers were pitted against media, parents, and local authority. Teenagers started
disobeying parents, getting expelled from school, and fighting back against authority. Indeed, the
50s were a time that saw upheavals towards the impact of the music, change of attitudes, new
fashions, and new dances developed children into teenagers. The impact music had on teenagers
was significant. Teenager s developed a new style of music called Rock n Roll, because the lyrics
reflected and embraced their lives. High school sweethearts, fast cars, and rebellion against
authority resembled what teenagers craved the most. Parents disliked the message and influence
behind the lyrics of Rock n Roll, because they believed it caused juvenile delinquency. Parents hated
the sexuality of the songs, the performers,

A Research On The Service Industry
The service industry has an interesting outlook when it comes to implementing lean ideas; a
copious amount of those in the industry do not believe lean applies to them. The finance industry,
a sector of the service industry, is not exempt from that mindset. Deepak Goyal, a practitioner in
health care strategies for Strategy , has a different opinion on the matter, Finance is just a
different kind of factory. It is a processing factory, and there s a lot of waste. The basic philosophy
doesn t really change. (Global Focus, North America, 2009) Credit unions in particular can reap a
large amount of benefits by implementing lean.
Contrary to widespread belief, credit unions are not the same as banks. Credit unions are not for

Alliance s momentum has not slowed since. As of April 2017, they had more than eighteen

These are great statements in theory. However, in practice, the only truth is that the employees

certainly is a lack of accuracy. One of the main issues the company seems to have is their lack

Kristallnacht ( The Night Of Broken Glass ) And Impact
Kristallnacht(The Night of Broken Glass) and Impact
Kristallnacht comes the German name Crystal Night. Kristallnacht was an event where Germans
persecuted Jews by burning down their synagogues, destroying their business, and stripping their
rights away from them; these two nights prefigured the Holocaust. The event leading up to
Kristallnacht was involving a shooting. A young Polish man named Herschel Grynszpan found out
his parents were exiled to where he was born in Hanover , Germany. For retaliation on November 7
, 1938 he shot Ernst Vom Rath. Rath lived 2 days after and died due to wounds; Hitler attended his
funeral and that day of continuing the next day . During Kristallnacht many destructive things
were done to the Jews. Over 250 synagogues and 7,000 Jewish business were burned. Any
business owned by a Jew wasn t allowed to reopen. 91 were dead and over 30,000 men were
arrested and sent to camps. The German people made Jews life a living hell and things became
harder and harder on the Jews causing them to be prohibited from certain areas of the city and
school. Only the real people and witnesses know what happened during the period of
Kristallnacht. A witness who witnessed and apart of Kristallnacht was Herbert , Jellinek. From
Herbert s point of view On November 10 ,1938 around the late part of the morning Herbert and is
father Leo, were walking home from the public bath , when from a far distance they saw the Tuner

Cold Water Recovery Essay
Literature Review
Recovery after exercise is crucial, whether it may be competitive athletics or amateur sports. The
way in which a person recovers can affect how a person feels by reducing the negative post
exercise effects such as muscle soreness/stiffness and general muscle fatigue. Cold water
immersion will be the first recovery modality reviewed. This method seems to be the most widely
used recovery tool within athletics. A review of other recovery methods such as contrast water
immersion stretching, self myofascial release, and massage will be completed to show as
comparison to cold water immersion.
The participation of Cold Water Immersion after a taxing training session or competition seems to
be ritualistic in athletics. Cold water ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Stretching, post exercise, is also a recovery technique used to combat the detrimental effects of
exercise. According the study conducted by Beckett, Schneiker, Wallman, Dawson, and Guelfi
(2009), a static stretching regimen of the lower extremity prime movers resulted in slower sprint
times for test participants. Results also revealed that stretching had detrimental effects on the
repeated sprint ability test. This study suggested that static stretching did not have a significant
impact on athletic performance or post activity recovery. Participants who performed static
stretching during their recovery period all recorded slower sprint and repeated sprint test times.
Conversely, Ray, Lago PeГ±as, CasГЎis, and Lago Ballesteros (2012), studied the effects of
stretching (passive recovery) twenty four hours post exercise, on subsequent testing for professional
soccer players. The researchers concluded that static stretching improved performance on counter
movement jump test for participants, but had no effect on 20 meter sprint times and agility testing.
This researchers suggested that the evidence found within this study is inconclusive, there is no
definitive way to decide if stretching had a positive impact on athlete recovery. Stretching, although
used by many practitioners and proven to aid in injury prevention does not seem to have a positive
or negative affect on recovery from the studies

How Is The Short Happy Life Of Francis Macomber
Set on an African Safari in the early 1900s, Ernest Hemingway s The Short Happy Life of Francis
Macomber tells the story of a young man and wife, Francis and Margot Macomber, and their
English guide, Robert Wilson, on a hunting trip gone awry. This essay will show how Hemingway s
character tied into the story itself.
Francis Macomber is described as very tall, very well built... and considered handsome
(Hemingway). He and his wife, Margot, clearly do not have a very healthy relationship, and on
various occasions she flirts heavily with Wilson. This story is quite ironic, as in the title it says
Francis Macomber s life was happy, though throughout the story you can see that it very much
isn t. He seems to be miserable in his relationship with his wife but as later on stated, Margot was
too beautiful for Macomber to divorce, and Macomber had too much money for Margot to ever
leave him (Hemingway). On the topic of irony, it can also be seen as ironic when he is ... Show

Macomber felt utter disgust for Wilson. Every time Wilson spoke, Macomber threw back
daggers for words. It annoyed Wilson, for he was unphased by the fact that Macomber knew
Wilson had been with his wife. He ignored Macomber s harsh words so they could go hunting for
the buffalo. As they drove out, Macomber spotted three large buffalo. Wilson told him, We ll cut
them off before they get to the swamp. They both got their guns ready, where Macomber almost
began to shoot from his position in the car before being shouted at by Wilson. They jumped out of
the vehicle as it came to a bolting stop, aimed, and began shooting. Macomber struck the first one
down, and with the help of Wilson, eventually the other two. Margot was awe struck, telling
Macomber how marvelous he had done. Macomber felt a wild unreasonable happiness that he had
never known before (Hemingway). Meaning, Macomber felt as though he had restored his

Demographic Transition Essay
The demographic transition has been closely accompanied by an epidemiological transition in
the area of health, that is, a change in the profile of morbidity and mortality by cause, and the
distribution of deaths by age. This transition is apparent in the percentage reduction in deaths
caused by transmissible (respiratory, infectious and parasite borne) diseases and in those in the
perinatal period, giving rise to a relative predominance of deaths caused by chronic and
degenerative diseases (of the circulatory apparatus and malignant tumors), as well as external
causes (caused by violence, accidents and injuries). This reflects both the greater drop in mortality
for the first group of causes, which mainly occur in children, as well as by the

Louisa May Alcott Quotes
Due to details from the text, Louisa May Alcott was anxious to participate, in some way, in the
Civil War. First, in paragraph 2 it states, I ve often longed to see a war, and now I have my wish.
This shows that Alcott wants to participate in the war because she longed to see the war, and
when she is able to be a nurse in the war, she says she has her wish. Also in paragraph 4 it states, I
like the stir in the air, and long for battle like a warhorse when he smells powder. From this, I can
infer that Alcott is anxious to participate in the war because when she describes the war, she
describes it as something that makes her feel confident/happy. Another evidence is in paragraph 5.
It states, Help needed, and I love nursing, and must let out my pent up energy in some new way.
This shows that Alcott wants to participate in the Civil War because she... Show more content on

Paragraph 8 states, We had all been full of courage till the last moment came, then we all broke
down. I realized that I had taken my life in my hand, and might never see them all again. This
shows that Alcott realizes that she has a possibility of not seeing her family ever again and she is
very close to her family. Her decision tells us that she is very brave and selfless. She clearly says to
herself, Shall I ever see that dear old face again? This proves that she is really doubting the idea of
going to war as a nurse because she does not want to not be able to see her family again. Also,
since this war is taking place during the winter, it makes things harder. However, she is still
determined to go to war/help the wounded people. Winter is always a hard and a dull time, and
if I am away there is one less to feed and warm and worry over (paragraph 5). Finally, her decision
also shows that she believes in the Union and really supports the idea of the Union becoming one

Lord Of The Flies Allegory Examples
Allegorical Meanings of LOTF.
Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, is basically represented by three big allegories as a whole;
Political, Historical, and Religious. The allegorical meaning for the novel differs from each
category of allegory. For political, later in the book, there are two different clashing tribes
representing a different type of government. The Historical allegory compares the main characters
such as Simon, Piggy, or Ralph to famous or infamous historical people. Lastly, the meaning of
the religious allegory is that the island is the Garden of Eden and the boys are Adam and Eve. For
each category of the three different types of allegories, the meaning of the book, Lord of The
Flies, as a whole differs. The religious allegorical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first thing Ralph does when he gets to the island is take off his clothes and take a bath in the
lagoon. Ralph inspected the whole thirty yards carefully and then plunged in. The water was
warmer than his blood and he might have been swimming in a huge bath. (Golding, 12) This
gesture relates to the act of Baptism and the innocence of Adam and Eve. Later in the book, the
boys become more savage than civilised trying to find the beast, or snake thing when it is really
just hiding inside of them. This is just like how Adam and Eve were fooled by the satan that
disguised himself as a serpent. The Devil figure, or the Satan is another religious allegory hidden
in Lord of The Flies. It is actually hidden right in the title. Lord of the Flies in hebrew means
Beelzebub which is another name for Satan or Devil. This name is from the Canaanite Baal
which means Lord and so he is known for lord of the flies. To expand even more, the boys on the
island are described with fly like behaviors and actions. He s Buzzed off (Golding, 55) Different
to the Devil Figure, the christ figure is represented by Simon, in LOTF. Simon is the Christ figure
because of his good morals, bravery, and

Romeo and Juliet includes several silent characters that contribute to the overall play. Lady Capulet
is not the silent character that she has generally referred to being. Juliet s beauty causes Romeo to

causes her own child s death. As the birth mother of Juliet, Lady Capulet doesn t genuinely care
about what Juliet wants. Concentration is more on Juliet s social standing than most anything else.

The Consequences Of Animal Testing
The Consequences of Animal Testing
A rabbit lives its life trapped in a laboratory. It doesn t get fresh air and has different products
tested on it every day. The product can make the rabbit go blind or cause its skin to burn, but there
is nothing the rabbit can do about it. This is what happens to animals every day from cosmetic
companies who test their products on animals. According to Cruelty Free Kitty (2017), over 30
cosmetic companies continue to use animal testing to improve their products. According to the U.S.
Food and Drug Administration (2006), the agency has consistently advised cosmetic manufactures
to employ whatever testing is appropriate and effective for substantiating the safety of their
products. This means that if the company believes animal testing is the best option for their product
they are allowed to do it. Testing cosmeticson animals is cruel and inhumane, and people should
avoid using products that test on animals.
There are many different tests that are performed on animals. According to The Humane Society of
The United States (n.d), it is estimated that 500,000 mice, guinea pigs, rats, and rabbits suffer and
die in these tests every year throughout the world. 500,000 innocent animals are used to improve
cosmetic company s products. One example of a test performed on animals are skin irritation
/corrosion. According to the Humane Society of The United States (n.d.), The test substance is
applied to the shaved skin of a rabbit. Their skin

The Real Miracle at Dunkirk and the Other Channel Ports in...
The real miracle at Dunkirk and the other Channel ports in May 1940 was that Hitler halted his
Panzer divisions against the advice of almost all his generals, and allowed nearly 600,000
British and French troops to escape to England. Had he not done so, the military disaster that the
British Expeditionary Force experienced in France would have been total, and none of its troops
would have been able to fight on another day. Even so, they lost most of their planes, tanks,
artillery and heavy equipment, while the loss of aircraft by the RAF imperiled it ability to defend
the country against the Luftwaffe. Although Winston Churchill and his Minister of Information
Alfred Duff Cooper tried to put the best face on the evacuation possible, especially by
emphasizing the role the small boats had played in the rescue effort, they were under no illusions
about the magnitude of the disaster. Hitler gave various explanations for why he refused to
continue ground operations against Dunkirk none of them particularly convincing and it has
puzzled historians for seventy years since. Most of the top German commanders were literally
speechless when they heard the order to halt and leave Dunkirk to the Luftwaffe, although Field
Marshal Gerd von Rundstedt was concerned about possible British and French counterattacks on
the exposed northern flank of the German army. Britain s counterattack at Arras had also come as
a severe shock to the Germans and De Gaulle would later make similar attacks

Literary Analysis Of The Haunted Boy
Literary Analysis The Haunted Boy
The setting is used by the author in stories to display the mood of the scene. Specific details bring
up certain moods for the characters and the reader. For example, when talking about a warm, sunny
day, the reader can infer that the scene is going to be happy and there is going to be no
misfortunate event that happens. Carson Smith McCullers uses the setting in her short story The
Haunted Boy to display the different moods of the main character Hugh. The settings in the story
help show how uncomfortable Hugh is in the house after a past experience and shows how happy
he is outside when he remembers happy memories.
The beginning of the story starts out with one of few happy settings. The front yard was one of
the only places that brought happy feelings to the story. McCullers short story starts out by
describing the day having sunshine on a mid April afternoon and the front lawn being green (page
675). These descriptions allow the reader to think warm and colorful thoughts. The story then goes
to talk about how the boys are running outside in the warm. Hugh race up the sidewalk, and John
followed him. They finished the front steps with two bounds, and the door slammed after them
(page 675). This shows how the boys are having fun and enjoying each others company. Finally, the
front yard is the place that Hugh remembers some of his fond memories of his mother. Sometimes
she would be out fooling with the border of spring flowers the candytuft, the sweet William, the
lobelias (she had taught him the names)... (page 675). From this explanation, the reader can relate
to the character thinking about different memories that they may have that bring happy thoughts to
mind.
One of the only places in the house that brought a comfortable feeling to Hugh was the kitchen. The
kitchen is described as bright and clean and the best room in the house (page 676). In the kitchen,
there are fresh towels and clean dishes. This statement gives you the feeling that everything is
going well in the house and there is nothing wrong. The kitchen is also the only place in the house
that made Hugh feel comfortable and safe (Page 677), except on this particular day when there was

Research Paper On Nicolas Copernicus
In the Middle Ages, the prevailing theory, backed by the church, was that Earth was the center of
the universe, and all other bodies revolved around it. This idea, proposed by Ptolemy, was widely
accepted and supported until Nicolaus Copernicus published his theory on the revolutions of the
heavenly bodies . Copernicus s version of our solar system put the sunat the center, with all other
planets circling it. This idea prevailed, and is now known to be true.
Ptolemy, a greek philosopher and the most important astronomer of antiquity to date, laid out the
arrangement of the planets and stars. Ptolemy based his theory off of the physics of Aristotle.
Accordingly, the Earth is at the center, with other planetary bodies revolving around ... Show more

First, current payout policies directly increase payout ratio by issuing large amount of new shares.
High payout ratio shows that the company has to spare a large amount of cash to pay dividends
rather than invest in more profitable projects.
In addition, given that dividends per share climbed slightly, earnings per share dropped greatly
from 1.29 to 0.91, meaning current payout policies limit the value of shareholders.
Although riskier, debt financing helps company have a better financial structure and because Blaine
Kitchenware refuses to do so, we agree that their capital structure and pay out policies are not the
most appropriate for the firm.
2. Advantages and disadvantages of large share repurchase proposal
The large share repurchase should be recommended to Blaine s board. The followings are
advantages of share repurchase.
First, a large share repurchase will significantly increase shareholders percentage ownership of
BKI. BKI has been under levered for decades. The company acquisitions of several small
manufacturers made shareholders equity be diluted even more. In other words, shareholders,
especially the main shareholders in Blaine s board, are paying for BKI s over liquidity. This
share repurchase will not only give the board more flexibility to allot dividends, but will lead to a
stable development of BKI s business in the long run.

Pros And Cons Of Abolishing Standardized Tests

Abolishing Standardized Tests Standardized tests determine such a drastic amount of one s future.
Not only do students fail standardized tests, but they also lack the knowledge that one expects a
child to learn in their current grade. In general, teachers focus on preparing students for tests and
not truly teaching the material. This forces the question of whether or not standardized tests
measure what students have learned or their test taking skills. Many students have terrible test
taking skills, which results in substantially low scores. This does not result from lack of
knowledge of the material, but rather because they do not understand how to effectively take and
finish tests. Students deserve a proper education, therefore require a reliable educator. The majority
of these failures result in lower graduation rates, and the percent of workforce drastically drops.
Standardized tests such as the American College Test, the ACT, Scholastic Aptitude Test, the SAT,
and core state tests should not remain a deciding factor for passing a grade level or getting
accepted into a certain college. One reason includes students inability to afford needed test
preparation. Misevaluating students knowledge and skills when using structured tests continues to
exemplify the major flaws in today s education system. Therefore, standardized testing should not
exist.

The Problem Of Crime And Gun Violence
Although it seems like the problem of crime and gun violence is never approached or discussed,
there are leaders within America tirelessly working to find a solution to help decrease crime.
Alex Yablon puts it like this in his article on The Trace, saying the lack of progress on the federal
level should not be confused with a lack of proposed solutions to America s gun violence
epidemic there are plenty of those, on both sides of the table. Yablon means there are some bills
that would limit the access to guns as well as bills that would prevent the enforcement of
restrictions on guns. However, he is not the only one to have an opinion of how the government is
viewing crimeand gun violence. John Donohue, in his article Gun Control: What We can learn
from other Advanced Countries, points out that besides being the world leader in the amount of
guns available to citizens, the U.S. does not seem to be making much progress on finding a
solution. Donohue also goes on to say that, the stricter gun laws of other advanced countries have
restrained homicidal violence, suicides and gun accidents, despite there being protest by the
armed citizens (Newsweek Magazine Web). These two men each hold different viewpoints when
it comes to how they think crime and gun violence is being addressed by the government,
however, each of their viewpoints presents a valid opinion in regards to the issue. Still, in order to
fully understand what is going on at the federal level, one has to

Personalization In Health And Social Care Case Study
2.3 Personalization and Privacy Concern
In the rapidly developing mobile health market, MHS providers need personalized services
increasingly in order to attract customers and capture the market. Meanwhile, it will involve the
issues of users privacy inevitably, and this seems to be an adoption behavior paradox. On the one
hand, users enjoy personalized mobile health services, but on the other hand, they are reluctant to
disclose their personal information or as little as possible. To illustrate privacyconcerns and
personalization, they will be discussed in detail separately.
2.3.1 Personalization
Personalization exists in many fields, and has been defined in many references (Hagen et al.,

Users can not only improve the efficiency through applications and enjoy convenience brought by
the technology, but also can bring them to their lives, manage their health and access benefits from
the service. In this way, the mobile health user is not only a recipient of technology, but more as a
consumer. Moreover, mobile health services are based on users personal information. However, the
convenient and personalized service, inevitably, initiates users privacy concerns. Therefore,
personalization and privacy concern have moderating effects on the factors in protection
motivation, and consequently, influence the mobile health services adoption. The integrated model
is depicted as in Figure 2.1 and is expected to have great predictive

Holden s Depression in J.D. Salinger s The Catcher in the...
Everybody feels depressed at some time or another in their lives. However, it becomes a
problem when depression is so much a part of a person s life that he or she can no longer
experience happiness. This happens to the young boy, Holden Caulfield in J.D Salinger s novel,
The Catcher in the Rye. Mr. Antolini accurately views the cause of Holden s depression as his
lack of personal motivation, his inability to self reflect and his stubbornness to overlook the
obvious which collectively results in him giving up on life before he ever really has a chance to
get it started. Holden lacks the essential ability to motivate himself, which he needs to survive in
the real world. He continues to be kicked out of every... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

the idea appeals to you or not. You?re in love with knowledge. And I think you?ll find, once you
get past all that, you?re going to start getting closer and closer ? that is, if you want to and if you
look for it and wait for it ? to the kind of information that will be very, very dear to your heart?
(189). Nevertheless Holden has so much personal pride he refuses lower him to that level. For if
he does, in his eyes, he will be the same as all those other ?Phony Ivy League bastards? (85). As a
result of Holden giving up on school, he is unable to proceed with the natural evolution that
must occur for him to move on in society. Mr. Antolini later points out to him ?Learning is a
beautiful reciprocal arrangement. And it isn?t education. It?s history. It?s poetry? (189). His
goal for Holden being to see school as something he loves and not something he is being forced
to do. Mr. Antolini tried to give Holden a reason to be motivated and in which case not to give
up so easily. Holden is quite skilled at citing exactly what is wrong with other people. However
he never acknowledges his own faults. He was sure the entire world was out of step with him. As
Alan Stewart explains, ?Holden seemed to divide the world into two groups. He was in one group,

Research Paper On David Hasselhoff
It seems in this modern day and age, no one in the entertainment industry can seem to maintain a
good credibility. A prime example of this is David Hasselhoff. David Hasselhoff demonstrates why
having good credibility is an important virtue but can easily and hastily be destroyed. He also
demonstrates that all your actions effect your credibility. David Hasselhoffwas born on July 17,
1952 (age 61) in Baltimore, MD. Some of his first major achievements include starring in many
television series such as The Young and the Restless, Baywatch, Baywatch Nights, and Night Rider.
Hasselhoff also dabbled in drama and theatre. Early in Hasselhoff s life, he believed his career
would lead to Broadway. (Stevens) Hasselhoff gained his credibility by not being caught in
scandals through the beginning of his career. He also gained credibility by starring in many of the
productions stated before. He was known as a trustworthy and credible person for a moderate
amount of time. (Stevens) That is, until he was discovered to be in the same boat as the vast
majority of the music industry.
David Hasselhoff s middle and current years of his life are controlled by alcohol. (Stevens) The
first time the public found out about Hasselhoff s drunken acts, his credibility toke a large negative

John Updike s A P, As A Reflector Of Our Society
American Perfection It has become a fact of life that our world is governed categorization. There is
nothing in our realm of awareness that has not been labelled or ranked. These practices originated
from the basic human conditioning for survival and understanding. However, they soon developed
into numerous attitudes, behaviors, judgments and systems of policies that have constrained and
segregated our population (Kadi). Heeding the ominous effects of these systems of classification,
John Updike utilizes his short story A P , as a reflector of our society. Updike exercises the literary
elements of a condescending tone, commonplace setting and the characterization of Queenie to
showcase the influence of classism in our country. Updike s... Show more content on

This internalized classism is commonly associated with feelings of inadequacy towards upper
class people, contempt towards one s family, as well as feelings of superiority and blame
towards others considered even lower in class than themselves (Action, Class). Updike
showcases these patterns in Sammy s comparison between Queenie and his own family: All of a
sudden I slid right down her voice into her living room. Her father and the other men were
standing around in ice cream coats and bow ties and the women were in sandals picking up
herring snacks on toothpicks off a big plate and they were all holding drinks the color of water
with olives and sprigs of mint in them. When my parents have somebody over they get
lemonade and if it s a real racy affair Schlitz in tall glasses with They Do It Every Time cartoons
stenciled on (Updike 19). The condescending tone in which Sammy describes the A P and its
shoppers, referring to them as the sheep (Updike 17) and houseslaves (Updike 18), reflects the
superiority and disdain he feels towards them. Updike further accentuates this class system
through the characterization of Queenie and his description of her walking through the A P, as if
she didn t walk in her bare feet that much (Updike 17), with a prim face (Updike 17) and obvious
air of elegance. Queenie s authority in her statement, We are decent , her lower lip

Teaching Mathematics And The Middle School Classroom
After teaching mathematics in a middle school classroom, I recognized my likes and dislikes about
teaching math. My biggest dislike about teaching mathematics is the fact that many students have a
negative attitude about mathematics and have become discouraged throughout their elementary
years. Once a student believes they are not capable of doing math, it is hard to change their belief.
Another dislike about teaching mathematics is that during this change to a more problem solving
and student centered teaching technique, students are coming to us from teachers who focus on
procedural knowledge instead of conceptual knowledge. Conceptual knowledge is knowledge that
consists of rich relationships or webs of ideas while procedural knowledge of mathematics is
knowledge of the rules and the procedures (Van De Walle, 28). While there are a few negatives
about teaching mathematics, there are several things I liked about teaching middle school
mathematics. I liked how the students were eager to learn the content and were confident in their
abilities to share their findings with their peers. Each student has a different background when it
comes to mathematics and real world scenarios where they have encountered this content. This
provides for better discussion amongst students which I feel is lacking in younger grades. This
learning experience, like any professional development, changes your thinking as an educator. Prior
to this experience I was nervous about the idea of

Overview Of Brent Crude Oil: The Brent blend of crude oil is the most common form of crude
oil used worldwide, with roughly two thirds of all crude contracts around the world referencing
the Brent blend (reference). Brent oil is drawn from more than a dozen oil fields spanning
across the North Sea off the coast of the UK and Norway. This particular type of crude oil is also
considered to be light and sweet (therefore low sulfate), making it ideal for refiners to make
gasoline and diesel fuel (). Although the Brent is destined for European markets, it forms more

Abu Ghraib Documentary Analysis
I began my research first by watching a documentary on Abu Ghraib. In 2008, director Errol
Morris released a documentary called standard operating procedure. The purpose of this video was
to demonstrate how powerful pictures are and how American soldiers had no respect for human
dignity when relating to the tortures and conditions the inmates had faced. The saying pictures are
worth a thousand words plays a key role here because all the pictures that were taken at this prison
portrays the hardships of the inmates. According to officer Sabrina, she wrote to her friend Kelly
saying, sandbags were put over their heads while we soaked them in hot sauce, and this
exemplifies that the officers did not care whatsoever as to what kind of crimes they are committing.

If I were to watch the same film without any background music it would not have the same effect
because the music adds suspense and persuades me to take an approach. Not only did Morris use
pathos but he also had a distinct style when directing this short film. His style consists of having
his interviewees talk directly into the camera. He uses a method that is known as interrotron,
which had made his works famous. Interrotron is when the director is seen as opposed to a script,
meaning the person being questioned is looking precisely at the director. I think this is important
because this way the audience builds a relationship with the interviewees. Guards tried to persuade
the audience that the methods they used were justified because higher officials, Military
Intelligence, told them it was right. This just shows that the officers needed a reason to believe
these acts were appropriate as opposed to differentiating from what is right and wrong. But when
the guards were interviewed individually they rephrased what they said to blame their acts on
higher officials and draw less attention to

The Essays On Physiognomy By Solomon Asch
The Essays on Physiognomy, written in 19th century, was a paper which tried to describe in a
scientific way how to understand in minutes the character of a person, based only in his physical
traits (Lavater, 1880). The paper, which was based in the same principles of phrenology, became
extreme popular; even if there was nothing supporting the unfounded conclusions of this essay, like
the relation between close eyebrows and stable personality! Still, the popularity of this paper shows
the urge of humans to create and trust quick impressions for others. A predetermination which can

Additionally, he discussed order effects. Primacy effects were associated with the first items in the
list which affected impressions more, while recency effects had to do with the fact that the last
items affected impressions more. He also talked about the halo effect, in which the positive or
negative evaluation associated with some traits spreads to others. Moreover, he supported that
impressions have structure and that the meanings of their elements (traits) depend on which other
elements are present.
Implicit personality theory is a network of assumptions that individuals hold about relationships
between people, behaviors and traits. Research has shown that if we know or believe that
someone has one particular trait, this leads us to infer that they have other traits as well
(Schneider, 1973; Selikides Anderson, 1994). As we will discuss next, this very useful in cases
individual try to create a positive impression on others.
Research has also suggested that information which is initially presented is more powerful in
forming a general impression, either because new information about a person always means simply
updating the first impression which always stays there or because individuals tend to pay much
more attention to the information that we encounter first in order to form an impression, thus
assimilating it better (Anderson 1962, 1965).

Research And Development Of Primary Energy
It is important to know if the targets above can actually be measured, [...] these targets must be
sufficiently ambitious to bring about meaningful change and their indicators must be robust and
fit for purpose . (Wykes, Stevens Singer (2015), Measuring what matters in the Energy SDG). In
fact, several indicators and measurement methods have been proposed by experts. Indeed, for the
target 7.1, a percentage of the worldwide electricity access and reliance on non solid fuels would
be a good indicator. The second target can be measured by evaluating renewable energies share in
the total energy consumption over a period of time. The third target requires a measurement that
should establish an annual comparison to estimate the improvements made. One method would be
to measure the energy intensity in terms of primary energy and GDP each year and therefore
assess the possible improvement. An example of indicator for the target 7.a would be to estimate
the percentage of national research development budget spent on renewables and energy efficiency
research but it wouldn t be enough to assign a number to the international cooperation that can be
established. It would be possible to count the number of cooperation but there is no way to have an
indicator measure their direct effect as a whole since they will include too many sectors and
variables to take into consideration. Finally, the last target, even though it s not as directly
measured as others, can be measured by the

Social Darwinism And Natural Selection
It is almost undeniable that the technologies cause rapid changes in human relationships, cultures,
and societies. While it enormously facilitates us in nearly every aspect of our life, such changes
also create consequences that we do not yet realize. Almost all of us know Darwinism and Natural
Selection in the biological field, but we often overlook the similar phenomena in the social aspect.
In fact, resemble to the way we adapt to our physical environment, we also adapt to our social
environment in order to survive and excel in our social relationships. Such adaption is called Social
Darwinism. Because technologies have significantly influenced our social environment, humans are

The reason behind such decision is that unless in urgent situations, other people expect them to text,
the technology that is more prevalent and requires less effort to respond than phone (Turkle 375).
Although Tara and Leonora are discontent, but do not feel they have a choice. This is where
technology has brought them (Turkle 375). From those examples, we can easily observe that
because the notions of using certain technology have already became parts of our general social
roles, people can no longer resist the influence of it regardless of our feeling.
In the meantime, we are also forced to mentally adapt popularity and efficiency, the core values of
modern technologies. In analogy, humans evolve (in the bigger and smaller scale) not only because
of our side environment, but also the pressure under the notion that only the fittest among us can
survive. In the comparison between phone calls and texts, texts are not any more technologically
advanced than phone calls are. However, we in general still prefer texts, and intentionally or
unintentionally make others around us use them because of the efficiency behind them. Moreover,
when the popularity of texts is accumulated, such preference becomes further irreversible. Back to
the context of expectations and social roles, we enjoy popularity as the outcome of pluralism, the
conformity of social roles and expectation. In

The Middle East And West Perceive Each Other
How the Middle East and West Perceive each other
Followed by a year of continuous terror attacks by ISIS, riots over cartoon portrayals of the Prophet
PBUH, and the ongoing war in Iraq and Afghanistan, many Muslims and Westerners know that they
have developed bad relations these days. The media continuously portrays the Middle East as nation
filled with terrorist whilst the West are portrayed as the nation that is trying to make peace. There
have been so many misconceptions that have made both cultures create a barrier between them
because of how both cultures are portrayed through the media.
Many in the West, view Muslims as fanatical, violent and as lacking tolerance. Muslims in the
Middle East and Asia have the same feelings towards the west as they view them as violent and
extremist but also selfish, immoral and greedy.
How America Perceives Muslims and the Middle East
Islamophobia existed in America before the terrorist attacks of September 11 2001, but it was
not as harsh as it was back then, but it did increase after the terror attacks and with the media
adding more misconceptions (Sinlak, n.d.). Some of the perceptions that most Americans had of
the Middle East was that they were rich with oil, lived a lavish life and consisted of deserts. They
did not have the idea of the Middle East being a terrorist region where there was always war.
However, after 9/11 the negative views started to increase, and Muslims and the Middle East were

Darwinism And Religion Gould Summary
At the beginning of the essay Gould made a clear reference to a dear friend, Kirtley Mather, who
was a pillar of both science and Christian religion in America (Gould, 1981). Comparatively, this
appealed to the emotions of the reader, unlike most scholarly works Gould reminded the reader of
his humanity. Often, Christians relate evolutionas being the work of a devil, or some form of
subhuman, out to misguide their faith; therefore, the reader assumed this was Gould s way of
facilitating a viable connection with biased readers before undermining creationism. Darwinism is
known as the theory of evolution, and creationists repeatedly utilize a mistaken vernacular of the
word theory to denounce evolution. Although, a theory is part of a hierarchy of confidence running
downhill from fact to theory to hypothesis to guess (Gould, 1981).... Show more content on

pending the outcome. And humans evolved from apelike ancestors whether they did so by
Darwin s proposed mechanism or by some other, yet to be discovered (Gould, 1981). In other
words, Darwinism is a theory, but human genetics were, without a doubt, sown from the same
seeds as apes, and even if another theory replaces Darwinism our ancestry will remain the

goes off to jail, and breaks out. The rest of the family goes off on a long road trip to try to find
their son, Davy. This part reminds me of the Wizard of Oz because Dorthy goes on a long trip
on the yellow brick road to find the Wizard. In the end, things don t turn out as planned but some
things get better. In this book, many people display courage. But, Davy has the most courage. He
had courage when he: killed the two boys, escaped jail, and was on his own for his whole life....

courage from not hiding the fact that he meant to kill them because he needed to protect his

Water Is The Backbone Of Civilization Essay
Water is the backbone of civilization as it determines which societies rise or fall. In the modern
era, California has grown to be an agricultural powerhouse, producing nearly half of the nation s
fruits, nuts and vegetables (Parsons, 2014). In recent years, the state has faced an exceptional
drought, causing the state to enact various emergency water conservation regulations. For many
farmers throughout the state, whose main source of water is from underground wells, irrigations of
fields have continued at a steep price. In order to keep irrigating their fields, farmers have had to
dig deeper in underground wells to reach the water level in underground aquifers. Currently, the
state consumes two million acre feet more than is replenished annually (SWRCB, 2012). The
general problem is that many groundwaterwells do not have flow measurement. The specific
problem is that unregulated flow measurement on Californian groundwater wells allows for
underground aquifers to be emptied at an unsustainable rate.
Background For many farmers without riparian or senior water rights, the only option to get water
is through wells that tap into underground aquifers. As farmers pull more water out of the ground,
the water level declines and wells must be dug deeper in order to retrieve water, known as overdraft.
Overdraft can lead to seawater intrusion, which is the movement of ocean water into fresh
groundwater, causing contamination of the groundwater by salt. Another common side effect

E-Service Quality Essay
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The main objectives of this report were to:
1.Evaluate and compare the e service quality of five websites in the utilities sector on the
dimensions of control, two way communication and responsiveness on the basis of a given
questionnaire. The companies examined were British Gas, Scottish Power, Scottish Hydro Electric,
EDF Energy and E.ON Energy.
2.Critique the content of the questionnaire, developing an argument for why the questionnaire is
comprehensive, or how it can be improved by deleting and/or adding dimensions to assess e service
quality.
To begin addressing these objectives, secondary research was carried out in order to gain a sound
understanding of e service quality concept and its ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

1.INTRODUCTION
1.1 Definition of e Service Quality
E service quality (e SQ) is a study of the quality of service received over the internet. This can be
defined as the extent to which a website facilitates efficient and effective shopping, purchasing and
delivery (Zeithaml et al., 2000).
Over the next four years, it is estimated that the number of online buyers in the UK will rise by
over half of the UK s current population, from 26.9 million to 31.8 million (marketresearch.com).
Clearly, this is a very large and profitable market, with businesses securing increasing numbers of
sales online each year (British Retail Consortium). Higher website quality leads to higher
profitability levels (Vanitha et al, 1999), therefore having an efficient and effective website is
crucial for obtaining sales, and e SQ is a major factor in securing customer loyalty (Cristobal et al,
2007).
Some academic researchers have created comprehensive scales to measure e SQ. Since
SERVQUAL is the definitive measurement of service quality (Wilson et al, 2008), it stands to
reason that many scales measuring e SQ would be based

Ruby And Sapphire Character Analysis
Indeed, it can be argued that, since Ruby and Sapphire are in a romantic relationship, there is no
need to include other and different types of LGBT couples. Pearl is in love with Rose but is
ultimately rejected as her romantic interest is assimilated into the heteronormative, leaving her
bitter and resentful. Therefore, if, on one hand, the otherness of Rose as an alien is assimilated
and normalized as she enters the heteronormative by beginning a relationship with the human
male character Greg, Pearl s deviousness as not only alien but also homosexual character
condemns her to remain unhappy and alone. Still bound to her idealized vision of Rose and
unable to overcome her issues, Pearl develops a crush for a human that looks just like her lost
lover: the mysterious girl of Last One out of Beach City. Their story, however, has not been
resolved yet: the mysterious girl s presence was just a one time occurrence and has not yet been
featured in successive episodes; moreover, she was not even given a name or any line... Show more

Consequently, everyone who has not watched the episodes in which Ruby and Sapphire un fuse can
legitimately be oblivious of the existence of a stable lesbian relationship in Steven Universe. On
a different note, it can also be pointed out how Garnet s condition as fusion is still unsettling and
unusual for Homeworld gems: in Log Date 7 15 12, Peridot asks Garnet to split because her
presence is making her incredibly uncomfortable. Even the character of Jasper is unable to
understand the relationship between Ruby and Sapphire because she can only think of fusion as a
weapon or, as she puts it, a cheap trick to make weak gems

The Machinery Of Freedom By David Friedman
In David Friedman s book, The Machinery of Freedom , he argues for anarcho capitalism, the
theory that believes the state should be abolished because it is unnecessary and a free market
should be put into place. Usually, anarcho capitalism is defended from one of two views,
consequentialist or deontologist. Friedman takes the consequentialist side believing that it is
actually more desirable for the market to provide law and protection than the state because it gives
the people choice to choose what they believe and competition will promote improvement.
Deontologists, however, believe that any initiation of force is immoral, so they would prefer a law
banning the initiation of force rather than private protection agencies. Despite... Show more content

A proponent to Friedman s view would support this because consumers have better information
than voters do. It has been seen election after election that politicians will tell the public what
they want to hear in an effort to win, but during their candidacy they will not fulfill their
promises. In an anarcho capitalist society, this wouldn t happen because when people choose
their protection agency they would be able to look at the company s records of how they handle
their other customers emergencies. From this information they would be able to tell how they
would be treated because companies usually follow the same procedures for every customer.
Politicians, on the other hand, often have to face new problems so voters can only make an
educated guess on what they will do next. Also, it is often difficult to know how corrupt a
politician really is behind the scenes. Therefore, the people participate in rational ignorance
because they know their vote alone won t change the result of the election, so they don t bother to
investigate deeply into each politician. Also, in an anarcho capitalist society everybody gets to
choose which laws they follow by picking protection agencies and courts with beliefs that align with
the person (Bill). An opponent to anarcho capitalism may respond

Kazuo Ishiguro Genre Analysis
The first question asked in the readings and discussions that we went through in class is what
exactly is the meaning of genre. To me personally, the word genre is it describes either a novel,
film, video game or music by certain generic ideas or rules of what defines that specific genre.
Stories can be described through narrative forms, such as if the writing piece is either a short
story, a novel or even a poem or narration. Also, stories can even be characterized by either
similar themes or settings and/or if they follow a certain structure such as if a book is either
defined as comedy or drama.
Daniel Chandler explains perfectly in An Introduction to Genre Theory how genre is not always
straightforward in defining things such as stories ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They also discuss certain books that they have written and how some people have complained
that it shouldn t be classified as a fantasy novel. Both explain how genres are now being mixed
and that sometimes, a book cannot be labeled by just one specific type of genre. I agree with
some of Neil Gaiman s statements, such as how he states that the subject of the book doesn t
determine genre and that genres only exist when there s an abundance of novels that fit that
specific genre. I both partly agree and disagree with Kazuo Ishiguro. I agree with how he believes
that there are certain patterns that are associated with the genre, however, many readers and
writers take these specifications too seriously, and believe that if you don t follow the certain
standards of what makes a specific genre, they believe that it is strange. However, I don t agree
with Ishiguro when he states Books are serving the same function as certain brands of cars or
jewelry, in just denoting social position. That kind of motivation attaches itself to reading in a way
that probably doesn t attach itself to film (Ishiguro 7). I believe that film can also motivate people
the same way that books can motivate

The Social And Multicultural Differences Of The Movie ...
Crash has many kinds of social and multicultural differences. The movie shows us how they affect
our society. The two major behaviors observed are Prejudice and Stereotyping. These are
identified as the causes of the events in the movie. The three main topics of this essay are, what do
they say about the people who subscribe to them?, what are stereotypes?, and how have stereotypes
affected your life (either by placing them on others or having them placed on you)? These all
play a major role in the movie. What do they say about the people who subscribe them? In my
opinion, stereotyping is just people assuming things about other people that they do not even
know. Its like saying, one has never met an Arab or a Muslim before and one says that, All Arabs
and Muslims are terrorists . People say All children hate healthy food , which is not true at all.
Healthy green foods are what I loved to eat when I was younger. I eat them every day and still
enjoy them, and I always will. People also say that Blondes are unintelligent which is not true, I
know some very intelligent blondes. They are just assuming that all blonds are dumb. In my
opinion stereotyping is a bad habit to start. Stereotyping people can hurt them very badly. I ve seen
some people cry when others stereotypethem. Stereotyping isn t nice, but apparently to some
people it is. Stereotyping could be considered a form of bullying and one can get in a lot of trouble
when one bully nowadays. There has been people

My Grandmother s Parents On My Dad s Side Essay
My great grandparents, Joe Seymour and Bonnie Hudkins are my grandfather s parents on my dad s
side, and they changed the denomination in which they believe several times. As a boy, Joe grew
up attending the Episcopal church, but as a young man, he converted to the Lutheran church when
he married my great grandmother Bonnie who was born and raised a Lutheran. While my
grandfather was young, my great grandfather sent him without telling my great grandmother to an
Episcopal Boys Home to correct his misbehavior. However, my great grandmother became upset
that my grandfather took him to the boys home and there were other religious differences which led
them to leave the Episcopal and Lutheran church altogether and try out the Church of Christ. Once
they were connected with the Church of Christ, they accepted the doctrine that they were the true
church of the New Testament. My grandmother s parents on my dad s side were Robert Ross Jr.
and Hazel (Helen) Mayfield. Pentecostalism believes in the baptismof the Holy Spiritwith the
evidence of speaking in tongues which is what Robert Ross grew up believing. However, Robert
and Helen decided to divorce soon after their children were born, and Robert remarried to a
woman named Mary. Mary s faith is in the Seventh Day Adventist church, so after marrying Mary;
Robert converted to be a Seventh Day Adventist to adapt to Mary s beliefs about diet and health as
well as life in general. My great grandmother, Helen on the other hand, is

  • 2. The Challenges with Waste Diversion from Landfill in Scotland The adverse degradation of the environment as a result of human activities such as the disposal of waste to the environment in an unsustainable manner. About 70% of waste (controlled waste) is land filled in Scotland .The need to develop more robust waste management techniques to ensure that waste disposal to the environment is carried in such a way that it does not endanger human health and the environment. Land fill contributes substantially to the rising greenhouse gas which cause global warming. European Union Council, after series of public consultation with relevant stakeholders, set up a legislation known as the EU WasteFramework directive (75/442/EEC) in 1975 .It was amended in 1991 and 2008.It aims at reducing waste to landfill... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In reference with the increase in population, there is also a corresponding increment of about 11 % from 1996 to 2011.Rising household waste is associated with the increase in the number of household generated within various councils in the WASG.The kind and amount of waste generated in this area is highly enhanced by the economic, commercial and industrial activities. Employment statistical data had shown that there has been a dramatic shift from industrial activities to more commercial activities due to vast change in economic growth and commercial activities accounting for major waste produced. However, due to the low level of recycling and other practices in place to curb the wasted produced in this area by local authorities, there has been a steady increase in the total waste generated which was estimated at 5759 000 tonnes in 1998 with industrial waste taken the lead and the MSW accounted for about 17%.As at 1998, about 96% of the total MSW were land filled while leaving about 4% recycled. It implies that this area group largely depends on the landfill options for their waste disposal. Approximately 60% of the MSW are transported to transfer stations where the waste are bulked and shipped to landfill sites or incinerated. There ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. The Impact Of Teenagers In The 1950 s The 1950 s was a time of great social change. The word, teen ager was recently coined and applied to people aged thirteen to nineteen. During this decade, people s perception of youth and adolescents drastically changed as children became more rebellious. Previous to 1950. society consisted of two main stages of human development: children and adults. When the Baby Boom started in 1946, producing more babies, a new eraof music, attitudes, practices, and dancebegan to appeal to kids that did not feel socially accepted by adults in society. This was the start of the teenage rebellion. With increased teenager presence came more disapproval because of rebellious behaviour. Teenagers were pitted against media, parents, and local authority. Teenagers started disobeying parents, getting expelled from school, and fighting back against authority. Indeed, the 50s were a time that saw upheavals towards the impact of the music, change of attitudes, new fashions, and new dances developed children into teenagers. The impact music had on teenagers was significant. Teenager s developed a new style of music called Rock n Roll, because the lyrics reflected and embraced their lives. High school sweethearts, fast cars, and rebellion against authority resembled what teenagers craved the most. Parents disliked the message and influence behind the lyrics of Rock n Roll, because they believed it caused juvenile delinquency. Parents hated the sexuality of the songs, the performers, ... A Research On The Service Industry The service industry has an interesting outlook when it comes to implementing lean ideas; a copious amount of those in the industry do not believe lean applies to them. The finance industry, a sector of the service industry, is not exempt from that mindset. Deepak Goyal, a practitioner in health care strategies for Strategy , has a different opinion on the matter, Finance is just a different kind of factory. It is a processing factory, and there s a lot of waste. The basic philosophy doesn t really change. The way in which a person recovers can affect how a person feels by reducing the negative post exercise effects such as muscle soreness/stiffness and general muscle fatigue. Cold water immersion will be the first recovery modality reviewed. This method seems to be the most widely used recovery tool within athletics. Stretching, post exercise, is also a recovery technique used to combat the detrimental effects of exercise. According the study conducted by Beckett, Schneiker, Wallman, Dawson, and Guelfi (2009), a static stretching regimen of the lower extremity prime movers resulted in slower sprint times for test participants. Results also revealed that stretching had detrimental effects on the repeated sprint ability test. This study suggested that static stretching did not have a significant impact on athletic performance or post activity recovery. Participants who performed static stretching during their recovery period all recorded slower sprint and repeated sprint test times. Conversely, Ray, Lago PeГ±as, CasГЎis, and Lago Ballesteros (2012), studied the effects of stretching (passive recovery) twenty four hours post exercise, on subsequent testing for professional soccer players. The researchers concluded that static stretching improved performance on counter movement jump test for participants, but had no effect on 20 meter sprint times and agility testing. This researchers suggested that the evidence found within this study is inconclusive, there is no definitive way to decide if stretching had a positive impact on athlete recovery. How Is The Short Happy Life Of Francis Macomber Set on an African Safari in the early 1900s, Ernest Hemingway s The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber tells the story of a young man and wife, Francis and Margot Macomber, and their English guide, Robert Wilson, on a hunting trip gone awry. This essay will show how Hemingway s character tied into the story itself. Francis Macomber is described as very tall, very well built... and considered handsome (Hemingway). He and his wife, Margot, clearly do not have a very healthy relationship, and on various occasions she flirts heavily with Wilson. This story is quite ironic, as in the title it says Francis Macomber s life was happy, though throughout the story you can see that it very much isn t. • 12. Louisa May Alcott Quotes Due to details from the text, Louisa May Alcott was anxious to participate, in some way, in the Civil War. First, in paragraph 2 it states, I ve often longed to see a war, and now I have my wish. This shows that Alcott wants to participate in the war because she longed to see the war, and when she is able to be a nurse in the war, she says she has her wish. Also in paragraph 4 it states, I like the stir in the air, and long for battle like a warhorse when he smells powder. From this, I can infer that Alcott is anxious to participate in the war because when she describes the war, she describes it as something that makes her feel confident/happy. Another evidence is in paragraph 5. It states, Help needed, and I love nursing, and must let out my pent up energy in some new way. This shows that Alcott wants to participate in the Civil War because she... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Paragraph 8 states, We had all been full of courage till the last moment came, then we all broke down. I realized that I had taken my life in my hand, and might never see them all again. This shows that Alcott realizes that she has a possibility of not seeing her family ever again and she is very close to her family. Her decision tells us that she is very brave and selfless. She clearly says to herself, Shall I ever see that dear old face again? This proves that she is really doubting the idea of going to war as a nurse because she does not want to not be able to see her family again. Also, since this war is taking place during the winter, it makes things harder. However, she is still determined to go to war/help the wounded people. Winter is always a hard and a dull time, and if I am away there is one less to feed and warm and worry over (paragraph 5). Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, is basically represented by three big allegories as a whole; Political, Historical, and Religious. The allegorical meaning for the novel differs from each category of allegory. For political, later in the book, there are two different clashing tribes representing a different type of government. The Historical allegory compares the main characters such as Simon, Piggy, or Ralph to famous or infamous historical people. The first thing Ralph does when he gets to the island is take off his clothes and take a bath in the lagoon. Ralph inspected the whole thirty yards carefully and then plunged in. The water was warmer than his blood and he might have been swimming in a huge bath. (Golding, 12) This gesture relates to the act of Baptism and the innocence of Adam and Eve. Later in the book, the boys become more savage than civilised trying to find the beast, or snake thing when it is really just hiding inside of them. This is just like how Adam and Eve were fooled by the satan that disguised himself as a serpent. The Devil figure, or the Satan is another religious allegory hidden in Lord of The Flies. It is actually hidden right in the title. Lord of the Flies in hebrew means Beelzebub which is another name for Satan or Devil. This name is from the Canaanite Baal which means Lord and so he is known for lord of the flies. To expand even more, the boys on the island are described with fly like behaviors and actions. It doesn t get fresh air and has different products tested on it every day. The product can make the rabbit go blind or cause its skin to burn, but there is nothing the rabbit can do about it. This is what happens to animals every day from cosmetic companies who test their products on animals. According to Cruelty Free Kitty (2017), over 30 cosmetic companies continue to use animal testing to improve their products. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (2006), the agency has consistently advised cosmetic manufactures to employ whatever testing is appropriate and effective for substantiating the safety of their products. This means that if the company believes animal testing is the best option for their product they are allowed to do it. • 17. The Real Miracle at Dunkirk and the Other Channel Ports in... The real miracle at Dunkirk and the other Channel ports in May 1940 was that Hitler halted his Panzer divisions against the advice of almost all his generals, and allowed nearly 600,000 British and French troops to escape to England. Had he not done so, the military disaster that the British Expeditionary Force experienced in France would have been total, and none of its troops would have been able to fight on another day. Even so, they lost most of their planes, tanks, artillery and heavy equipment, while the loss of aircraft by the RAF imperiled it ability to defend the country against the Luftwaffe. Although Winston Churchill and his Minister of Information Alfred Duff Cooper tried to put the best face on the evacuation possible, especially by emphasizing the role the small boats had played in the rescue effort, they were under no illusions about the magnitude of the disaster. Hitler gave various explanations for why he refused to continue ground operations against Dunkirk none of them particularly convincing and it has puzzled historians for seventy years since. Most of the top German commanders were literally speechless when they heard the order to halt and leave Dunkirk to the Luftwaffe, although Field Marshal Gerd von Rundstedt was concerned about possible British and French counterattacks on the exposed northern flank of the German army. Britain s counterattack at Arras had also come as a severe shock to the Germans and De Gaulle would later make similar attacks ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 18. Literary Analysis Of The Haunted Boy Literary Analysis The Haunted Boy The setting is used by the author in stories to display the mood of the scene. Specific details bring up certain moods for the characters and the reader. For example, when talking about a warm, sunny day, the reader can infer that the scene is going to be happy and there is going to be no misfortunate event that happens. Carson Smith McCullers uses the setting in her short story The Haunted Boy to display the different moods of the main character Hugh. The settings in the story help show how uncomfortable Hugh is in the house after a past experience and shows how happy he is outside when he remembers happy memories. The beginning of the story starts out with one of few happy settings. The front yard was one of the only places that brought happy feelings to the story. McCullers short story starts out by describing the day having sunshine on a mid April afternoon and the front lawn being green (page 675). These descriptions allow the reader to think warm and colorful thoughts. The story then goes to talk about how the boys are running outside in the warm. Hugh race up the sidewalk, and John followed him. They finished the front steps with two bounds, and the door slammed after them (page 675). This shows how the boys are having fun and enjoying each others company. Finally, the front yard is the place that Hugh remembers some of his fond memories of his mother. Sometimes she would be out fooling with the border of spring flowers the candytuft, the sweet William, the lobelias (she had taught him the names)... (page 675). From this explanation, the reader can relate to the character thinking about different memories that they may have that bring happy thoughts to mind. One of the only places in the house that brought a comfortable feeling to Hugh was the kitchen. The kitchen is described as bright and clean and the best room in the house (page 676). In the kitchen, there are fresh towels and clean dishes. This statement gives you the feeling that everything is going well in the house and there is nothing wrong. The kitchen is also the only place in the house that made Hugh feel comfortable and safe (Page 677), except on this particular day when there was no note from his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 19. Research Paper On Nicolas Copernicus In the Middle Ages, the prevailing theory, backed by the church, was that Earth was the center of the universe, and all other bodies revolved around it. This idea, proposed by Ptolemy, was widely accepted and supported until Nicolaus Copernicus published his theory on the revolutions of the heavenly bodies . Copernicus s version of our solar system put the sunat the center, with all other planets circling it. This idea prevailed, and is now known to be true. First, current payout policies directly increase payout ratio by issuing large amount of new shares. High payout ratio shows that the company has to spare a large amount of cash to pay dividends rather than invest in more profitable projects. In addition, given that dividends per share climbed slightly, earnings per share dropped greatly from 1.29 to 0.91, meaning current payout policies limit the value of shareholders. Although riskier, debt financing helps company have a better financial structure and because Blaine Kitchenware refuses to do so, we agree that their capital structure and pay out policies are not the most appropriate for the firm. 2. Advantages and disadvantages of large share repurchase proposal The large share repurchase should be recommended to Blaine s board. The followings are advantages of share repurchase. First, a large share repurchase will significantly increase shareholders percentage ownership of BKI. BKI has been under levered for decades. The company acquisitions of several small manufacturers made shareholders equity be diluted even more. In other words, shareholders, especially the main shareholders in Blaine s board, are paying for BKI s over liquidity. • 21. Pros And Cons Of Abolishing Standardized Tests Stolz 1 Jennie Stolz DC English Mrs. Colbert 3 November 2017 Abolishing Standardized Tests Standardized tests determine such a drastic amount of one s future. Not only do students fail standardized tests, but they also lack the knowledge that one expects a child to learn in their current grade. In general, teachers focus on preparing students for tests and not truly teaching the material. This forces the question of whether or not standardized tests measure what students have learned or their test taking skills. Many students have terrible test taking skills, which results in substantially low scores. This does not result from lack of knowledge of the material, but rather because they do not understand how to effectively take and finish tests. Students deserve a proper education, therefore require a reliable educator. The majority of these failures result in lower graduation rates, and the percent of workforce drastically drops. Standardized tests such as the American College Test, the ACT, Scholastic Aptitude Test, the SAT, and core state tests should not remain a deciding factor for passing a grade level or getting accepted into a certain college. One reason includes students inability to afford needed test preparation. Misevaluating students knowledge and skills when using structured tests continues to exemplify the major flaws in today s education system. Therefore, standardized testing should not exist. ... The Problem Of Crime And Gun Violence Although it seems like the problem of crime and gun violence is never approached or discussed, there are leaders within America tirelessly working to find a solution to help decrease crime. Alex Yablon puts it like this in his article on The Trace, saying the lack of progress on the federal level should not be confused with a lack of proposed solutions to America s gun violence epidemic there are plenty of those, on both sides of the table. Yablon means there are some bills that would limit the access to guns as well as bills that would prevent the enforcement of restrictions on guns. However, he is not the only one to have an opinion of how the government is viewing crimeand gun violence. John Donohue, in his article Gun Control: What We can learn from other Advanced Countries, points out that besides being the world leader in the amount of guns available to citizens, the U.S. does not seem to be making much progress on finding a solution. Donohue also goes on to say that, the stricter gun laws of other advanced countries have restrained homicidal violence, suicides and gun accidents, despite there being protest by the armed citizens (Newsweek Magazine Web). These two men each hold different viewpoints when it comes to how they think crime and gun violence is being addressed by the government, however, each of their viewpoints presents a valid opinion in regards to the issue. There is nothing in our realm of awareness that has not been labelled or ranked. These practices originated from the basic human conditioning for survival and understanding. However, they soon developed into numerous attitudes, behaviors, judgments and systems of policies that have constrained and segregated our population (Kadi). Heeding the ominous effects of these systems of classification, John Updike utilizes his short story A P , as a reflector of our society. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This internalized classism is commonly associated with feelings of inadequacy towards upper class people, contempt towards one s family, as well as feelings of superiority and blame towards others considered even lower in class than themselves (Action, Class). Her father and the other men were standing around in ice cream coats and bow ties and the women were in sandals picking up herring snacks on toothpicks off a big plate and they were all holding drinks the color of water with olives and sprigs of mint in them. • 27. Teaching Mathematics And The Middle School Classroom After teaching mathematics in a middle school classroom, I recognized my likes and dislikes about teaching math. My biggest dislike about teaching mathematics is the fact that many students have a negative attitude about mathematics and have become discouraged throughout their elementary years. Once a student believes they are not capable of doing math, it is hard to change their belief. Another dislike about teaching mathematics is that during this change to a more problem solving and student centered teaching technique, students are coming to us from teachers who focus on procedural knowledge instead of conceptual knowledge. Conceptual knowledge is knowledge that consists of rich relationships or webs of ideas while procedural knowledge of mathematics is knowledge of the rules and the procedures (Van De Walle, 28). While there are a few negatives about teaching mathematics, there are several things I liked about teaching middle school mathematics. I liked how the students were eager to learn the content and were confident in their abilities to share their findings with their peers. Each student has a different background when it comes to mathematics and real world scenarios where they have encountered this content. This provides for better discussion amongst students which I feel is lacking in younger grades. This learning experience, like any professional development, changes your thinking as an educator. He uses a method that is known as interrotron, which had made his works famous. Interrotron is when the director is seen as opposed to a script, meaning the person being questioned is looking precisely at the director. I think this is important because this way the audience builds a relationship with the interviewees. Indeed, for the target 7.1, a percentage of the worldwide electricity access and reliance on non solid fuels would be a good indicator. The second target can be measured by evaluating renewable energies share in the total energy consumption over a period of time. The third target requires a measurement that should establish an annual comparison to estimate the improvements made. One method would be to measure the energy intensity in terms of primary energy and GDP each year and therefore assess the possible improvement. An example of indicator for the target 7.a would be to estimate the percentage of national research development budget spent on renewables and energy efficiency research but it wouldn t be enough to assign a number to the international cooperation that can be established. It would be possible to count the number of cooperation but there is no way to have an indicator measure their direct effect as a whole since they will include too many sectors and variables to take into consideration. Often, Christians relate evolutionas being the work of a devil, or some form of subhuman, out to misguide their faith; therefore, the reader assumed this was Gould s way of facilitating a viable connection with biased readers before undermining creationism. Mainly because we go by our rank in the United States Army and that the rank is your first name. And even though he went on to make First Sergeant he will always be SFC Moton to me. I never had a mentor before didn t know I needed one. But he was there when I needed one and trust me at the age of 24 I needed some Guidance. In February of 2000 I was leaving Germany on my way to Fort Hood, TX. I was assigned to Charlie Company also called Cobra Company in May of 2000. And that s where I met SFC Moton, he was a tall and slender man with light skin, bald head ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I was ready to say goodbye to the U.S Army. I was going back and forth about what I was going to do. Should I go should I stay type of thing. So one day SFC Moton said to me Sgt. May we having lunch today you and me. He told me to be waiting for him in the back of the Company around 1030 hours. We didn t go to lunch early often. I started wondering what was wrong did I miss something, was something not cleaned was something missing. So I waited out back like I was order to do and waited for some type of reprimand. When he got there he said let s take a walk to Popeye s and I was relieved nothing was wrong. Our conversation started like it always had about women, we laugh and joked as I told him what was going on in my world. We laugh and he told me one of his Recruiter stories. We shared laughs and stories as if we were father and son. And then he asked me about my future plans in the Army and wanted to know what I was going to do with my life. I gave him the only thing I had, a story. I was going home to go back to school and get a job on the police force and live with my father for a little while just until I could get on my feet. Really, I didn t have a plan and he knew it, like I said you get to know each other pretty well during those Field Training Exercises. He wanted to talked to me about my potential and let me know I already had a career in the Army. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. Peace Like A River Quotes You ve always had the power my dear, you just had to learn it for yourself. This quote is from the Wizard Of Oz. It talks about courage to people who don t think they can do these things. This quote is very important if someone doesn t think they can do something but needs to or wants to. I read the book Peace Like A River by Leif Enger. This quote ties to the book because It is about a family who has a son who kills two people who were stalking their home. The son then goes off to jail, and breaks out. The rest of the family goes off on a long road trip to try to find their son, Davy. This part reminds me of the Wizard of Oz because Dorthy goes on a long trip on the yellow brick road to find the Wizard. In the end, things don t turn out as planned but some things get better. In this book, many people display courage. But, Davy has the most courage. He had courage when he: killed the two boys, escaped jail, and was on his own for his whole life.... • 42. Water Is The Backbone Of Civilization Essay Water is the backbone of civilization as it determines which societies rise or fall. In the modern era, California has grown to be an agricultural powerhouse, producing nearly half of the nation s fruits, nuts and vegetables (Parsons, 2014). In recent years, the state has faced an exceptional drought, causing the state to enact various emergency water conservation regulations. For many farmers throughout the state, whose main source of water is from underground wells, irrigations of fields have continued at a steep price. In order to keep irrigating their fields, farmers have had to dig deeper in underground wells to reach the water level in underground aquifers. Currently, the state consumes two million acre feet more than is replenished annually (SWRCB, 2012). The general problem is that many groundwaterwells do not have flow measurement. The specific problem is that unregulated flow measurement on Californian groundwater wells allows for underground aquifers to be emptied at an unsustainable rate. Background For many farmers without riparian or senior water rights, the only option to get water is through wells that tap into underground aquifers. As farmers pull more water out of the ground, the water level declines and wells must be dug deeper in order to retrieve water, known as overdraft. Overdraft can lead to seawater intrusion, which is the movement of ocean water into fresh groundwater, causing contamination of the groundwater by salt. Another common side effect ... • 43. E-Service Quality Essay EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The main objectives of this report were to: 1.Evaluate and compare the e service quality of five websites in the utilities sector on the dimensions of control, two way communication and responsiveness on the basis of a given questionnaire. The companies examined were British Gas, Scottish Power, Scottish Hydro Electric, EDF Energy and E.ON Energy. 2.Critique the content of the questionnaire, developing an argument for why the questionnaire is comprehensive, or how it can be improved by deleting and/or adding dimensions to assess e service quality. To begin addressing these objectives, secondary research was carried out in order to gain a sound understanding of e service quality concept and its ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... References...................................................................................................................10 7.Appendices..................................................................................................................12 1.INTRODUCTION 1.1 Definition of e Service Quality E service quality (e SQ) is a study of the quality of service received over the internet. This can be defined as the extent to which a website facilitates efficient and effective shopping, purchasing and delivery (Zeithaml et al., 2000). Over the next four years, it is estimated that the number of online buyers in the UK will rise by over half of the UK s current population, from 26.9 million to 31.8 million (marketresearch.com). Clearly, this is a very large and profitable market, with businesses securing increasing numbers of sales online each year (British Retail Consortium). Higher website quality leads to higher profitability levels (Vanitha et al, 1999), therefore having an efficient and effective website is crucial for obtaining sales, and e SQ is a major factor in securing customer loyalty (Cristobal et al, 2007). Some academic researchers have created comprehensive scales to measure e SQ. Since SERVQUAL is the definitive measurement of service quality (Wilson et al, 2008), it stands to reason that many scales measuring e SQ would be based ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 44. Ruby And Sapphire Character Analysis Indeed, it can be argued that, since Ruby and Sapphire are in a romantic relationship, there is no need to include other and different types of LGBT couples. Pearl is in love with Rose but is ultimately rejected as her romantic interest is assimilated into the heteronormative, leaving her bitter and resentful. Therefore, if, on one hand, the otherness of Rose as an alien is assimilated and normalized as she enters the heteronormative by beginning a relationship with the human male character Greg, Pearl s deviousness as not only alien but also homosexual character condemns her to remain unhappy and alone. Still bound to her idealized vision of Rose and unable to overcome her issues, Pearl develops a crush for a human that looks just like her lost lover: the mysterious girl of Last One out of Beach City. Their story, however, has not been resolved yet: the mysterious girl s presence was just a one time occurrence and has not yet been featured in successive episodes; moreover, she was not even given a name or any line... Consequently, everyone who has not watched the episodes in which Ruby and Sapphire un fuse can legitimately be oblivious of the existence of a stable lesbian relationship in Steven Universe. On a different note, it can also be pointed out how Garnet s condition as fusion is still unsettling and unusual for Homeworld gems: in Log Date 7 15 12, Peridot asks Garnet to split because her presence is making her incredibly uncomfortable. Even the character of Jasper is unable to understand the relationship between Ruby and Sapphire because she can only think of fusion as a weapon or, as she puts it, a cheap trick to make weak gems ... • 45. The Machinery Of Freedom By David Friedman In David Friedman s book, The Machinery of Freedom , he argues for anarcho capitalism, the theory that believes the state should be abolished because it is unnecessary and a free market should be put into place. Usually, anarcho capitalism is defended from one of two views, consequentialist or deontologist. Friedman takes the consequentialist side believing that it is actually more desirable for the market to provide law and protection than the state because it gives the people choice to choose what they believe and competition will promote improvement. Deontologists, however, believe that any initiation of force is immoral, so they would prefer a law banning the initiation of force rather than private protection agencies. Despite... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A proponent to Friedman s view would support this because consumers have better information than voters do. It has been seen election after election that politicians will tell the public what they want to hear in an effort to win, but during their candidacy they will not fulfill their promises. In an anarcho capitalist society, this wouldn t happen because when people choose their protection agency they would be able to look at the company s records of how they handle their other customers emergencies. From this information they would be able to tell how they would be treated because companies usually follow the same procedures for every customer. Politicians, on the other hand, often have to face new problems so voters can only make an educated guess on what they will do next. Also, it is often difficult to know how corrupt a politician really is behind the scenes. Therefore, the people participate in rational ignorance because they know their vote alone won t change the result of the election, so they don t bother to investigate deeply into each politician. Also, in an anarcho capitalist society everybody gets to choose which laws they follow by picking protection agencies and courts with beliefs that align with the person (Bill). An opponent to anarcho capitalism may respond ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 46. Kazuo Ishiguro Genre Analysis The first question asked in the readings and discussions that we went through in class is what exactly is the meaning of genre. To me personally, the word genre is it describes either a novel, film, video game or music by certain generic ideas or rules of what defines that specific genre. Stories can be described through narrative forms, such as if the writing piece is either a short story, a novel or even a poem or narration. Also, stories can even be characterized by either similar themes or settings and/or if they follow a certain structure such as if a book is either defined as comedy or drama. Daniel Chandler explains perfectly in An Introduction to Genre Theory how genre is not always straightforward in defining things such as stories ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They also discuss certain books that they have written and how some people have complained that it shouldn t be classified as a fantasy novel. Both explain how genres are now being mixed and that sometimes, a book cannot be labeled by just one specific type of genre. I agree with some of Neil Gaiman s statements, such as how he states that the subject of the book doesn t determine genre and that genres only exist when there s an abundance of novels that fit that specific genre. I both partly agree and disagree with Kazuo Ishiguro. I agree with how he believes that there are certain patterns that are associated with the genre, however, many readers and writers take these specifications too seriously, and believe that if you don t follow the certain standards of what makes a specific genre, they believe that it is strange. However, I don t agree with Ishiguro when he states Books are serving the same function as certain brands of cars or jewelry, in just denoting social position. That kind of motivation attaches itself to reading in a way that probably doesn t attach itself to film (Ishiguro 7). I believe that film can also motivate people the same way that books can motivate ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 47. The Social And Multicultural Differences Of The Movie ... Crash has many kinds of social and multicultural differences. The movie shows us how they affect our society. The two major behaviors observed are Prejudice and Stereotyping. These are identified as the causes of the events in the movie. The three main topics of this essay are, what do they say about the people who subscribe to them?, what are stereotypes?, and how have stereotypes affected your life (either by placing them on others or having them placed on you)? These all play a major role in the movie. What do they say about the people who subscribe them? In my opinion, stereotyping is just people assuming things about other people that they do not even know. Its like saying, one has never met an Arab or a Muslim before and one says that, All Arabs and Muslims are terrorists . People say All children hate healthy food , which is not true at all. Healthy green foods are what I loved to eat when I was younger. I eat them every day and still enjoy them, and I always will. People also say that Blondes are unintelligent which is not true, I know some very intelligent blondes. They are just assuming that all blonds are dumb. In my opinion stereotyping is a bad habit to start. Stereotyping people can hurt them very badly. I ve seen some people cry when others stereotypethem. Stereotyping isn t nice, but apparently to some people it is. Stereotyping could be considered a form of bullying and one can get in a lot of trouble when one bully nowadays. There has been people ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

My Grandmother s Parents On My Dad s Side Essay My great grandparents, Joe Seymour and Bonnie Hudkins are my grandfather s parents on my dad s side, and they changed the denomination in which they believe several times. As a boy, Joe grew up attending the Episcopal church, but as a young man, he converted to the Lutheran church when he married my great grandmother Bonnie who was born and raised a Lutheran. While my grandfather was young, my great grandfather sent him without telling my great grandmother to an Episcopal Boys Home to correct his misbehavior. However, my great grandmother became upset that my grandfather took him to the boys home and there were other religious differences which led them to leave the Episcopal and Lutheran church altogether and try out the Church of Christ. Once they were connected with the Church of Christ, they accepted the doctrine that they were the true church of the New Testament. My grandmother s parents on my dad s side were Robert Ross Jr. and Hazel (Helen) Mayfield. Pentecostalism believes in the baptismof the Holy Spiritwith the evidence of speaking in tongues which is what Robert Ross grew up believing. However, Robert and Helen decided to divorce soon after their children were born, and Robert remarried to a woman named Mary. Mary s faith is in the Seventh Day Adventist church, so after marrying Mary; Robert converted to be a Seventh Day Adventist to adapt to Mary s beliefs about diet and health as well as life in general.
