The 2005 Mumbai floods were caused by the heaviest rainfall in over a century, with some areas receiving over 900 mm of rain in just 18 hours. Over 5000 people died due to the flooding, which submerged homes and infrastructure across Mumbai and surrounding areas. The rains and flooding crippled the city, cutting off power, transportation, and communication systems for days. The economic losses from damage to homes, businesses, crops and infrastructure were estimated to be over $100 million.
