This document proposes a research project to develop a lightweight digital library framework called simplyCT. It aims to address the complexity and high costs of existing digital library systems by deriving a formal definition of simplicity for digital library design. The research questions examine whether simpler architectures can be implemented and what advantages they may have over more complex systems. The proposed methodology includes a pilot collection prototype, deriving principles for simplyCT, and designing and evaluating a proof of concept system based on those principles. The anticipated outcomes are a formal definition of simplicity, a prototype digital library system, and a set of design principles for the simplyCT framework.
