The West African Vegetation Database (presented at AETFAT 2010, Antananarivo)Marco Schmidt
The West African Vegetation Database was created to address the limited availability and lack of digitization of vegetation data in West Africa. The database enhances digitization, facilitates data sharing, and identifies gaps to avoid redundant work. It is developed through collaborations between universities and research institutions. The database currently holds over 358,000 vegetation records. Future plans include establishing more botanical resources, conducting regional analyses, and integrating with global databases.

Improved Scholarly Communication Using Machine LearningLighton Phiri
The University of Zambia is working to improve the visibility and impact of its research output by automating processes for curating scholarly works. Current efforts include developing machine learning models to automatically classify electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs) by domain, type, and subject using features extracted from the manuscripts. Preliminary results show models that can accurately classify ETD collections, types, and subjects have been implemented and deployed as a web API. This aims to address challenges around research output not being properly archived and discoverable, making the impact of research difficult to measure.

Towards Open Access Institutional Repositories in Zambian HEIsLighton Phiri
This document discusses establishing open access institutional repositories in Zambian higher education institutions. It defines key concepts like scholarly communication and open access methods. It analyzes challenges with visibility and access to Zambian scholarly output currently. Mandating repositories could help disseminate research more widely, increase institutional prestige and competitiveness, and provide metrics for research assessment. While two Zambian universities already have repositories, adoption is not widespread. The document argues the Higher Education Authority should mandate repository adoption across institutions and develop an open access policy to improve research profiling, access, and assessment in Zambia.

(3) Initiatives like the Canvas learning management system, WAOL course sharing, and Project I-DEA aim to improve learning outcomes and reduce costs for all students through increased use of digital technologies.
Enterprise Medical Imaging for Streamlined Radiological Diagnosis in Zambian...Lighton Phiri
The Republic of Zambia, like many countries world-over, is faced with a critical shortage of trained radiologists, medical experts specialised in the interpretation of medical images for radiological diagnosis of health conditions. It was reported that as of 2019, Zambia had only five (5) trained radiologists against a population of 17 million (Bwanga et al., 2019). This project is a pilot study that seeks to investigate the challenges resulting from the shortage of radiologists and to investigate the feasibility of implementation of efficient and effective medical imaging workflows using enterprise imaging techniques, in order to demonstrate the potential of enterprise imaging in addressing the grand challenges associated with medical imaging in Zambia.

The document discusses developing a useful and interoperable picture archiving and communication system (PACS) platform for public health facilities in Zambia. It describes current inefficient medical imaging workflows and storage methods. The authors are working on designing a standards-based PACS platform that facilitates effective storage, management and access of medical images while allowing interoperability with other health information management systems. Future work includes requirements gathering, usability evaluation, and exploring artificial intelligence for automated image interpretation. The goal is to streamline radiological diagnosis in Zambian public health facilities.
Enterprise Medical Imaging in the Global South: Challenges and OpportunitiesLighton Phiri
The document discusses the challenges of enterprise medical imaging in Zambia and opportunities for improvement. It finds that there is a critical shortage of radiologists in Zambia and limited use of modern medical imaging practices. A case study of University Teaching Hospitals in Zambia showed inefficient workflows due to a lack of imaging systems. The authors propose implementing enterprise imaging techniques to help address these challenges by improving how medical images are acquired, managed, and analyzed. A SWOT analysis identified strengths like trained staff but also weaknesses like outdated equipment and a lack of IT infrastructure. The study aims to better understand current workflows and help automate processes through new imaging systems.

DRGS OJS Training: Electronic Publishing Using Open Journal SystemsLighton Phiri
The document discusses using Open Journal Systems (OJS) to increase the online visibility of scholarly output from the University of Zambia (UNZA). It finds that UNZA's scholarly output is currently invisible online when compared to other institutions. OJS is presented as a free, open-source journal management and publishing system that could help publish and index UNZA journals online. Requirements for implementing OJS include hosting, installation, customization, and annual costs for hosting, ISSN/DOI registration, and system administration. Overall, the document argues that adopting OJS could help make UNZA's scholarly publications more discoverable and accessible online.
This document provides an overview of users and user roles in Open Journal Systems (OJS). It outlines how to log into OJS, modify user profiles, create users, and assign user roles. The main user roles discussed are journal manager, editor, section editor, and subscription manager. Hands-on exercises are included to create sample users and assign them reviewer and author roles for a journal. The training aims to help users understand and manage access permissions within OJS.
OJS Training: Journal Settings and ConfigurationLighton Phiri
This document outlines a training on journal settings and configuration in OJS (Open Journal Systems). The training will be conducted on the live OJS instance at journals.unza.zm and cover topics like users and roles, creating and configuring journals, journal settings, website settings, workflow settings, and distribution settings. Hands-on exercises will be done on the live site.
OJS Training: Managing The Submission ProcessLighton Phiri
This document outlines a training on managing the submission process in Open Journal Systems (OJS). It will cover submitting articles, reviewing submissions, editing copies, and production. The hands-on session will use a live OJS instance. The submission process is described over 17 slides, outlining uploading files, entering metadata, and tracking status changes. Review is outlined in 16 slides, including assigning editors, entering decisions, and revising submissions. Copyediting and production are also summarized in 6 and 5 slides respectively.
OJS Training: Creating and Managing Journal IssuesLighton Phiri

It covers an overview of OJS journal issues, creating new issues, managing existing issues by editing metadata and article order, previewing issues privately, publishing issues publicly, and deleting issues. The hands-on training will use a live OJS instance for the University of Zambia's journals.

Post PhD Transition Experience: Successes and ChallengesLighton Phiri
I gave an invited talk today---July 30, 2019---to my alma mater: The Hasso Plattner Institute Research School in Computer Science for Africa (HPI-CSA) [1, 2, 3].
People were curious about my transition from graduate school to moving back to my home country: Zambia. I mostly focused on what I thought are challenges and successes of my transition.
