The True Behavior of Violent Video Game Players In October 1958, a Physicist named William
Higinbotham successfully created the first interactive computer software purely for entertainment; a
simple idea of two panels bouncing a dot between one another. This was later rebranded as the famous
title Pong, the original that Higinbotham created was generated on an oscilloscope, which is a small
computer designed to test electrical equipment. Today, video games are huge in terms of consumer
acceptance, marketing, and digital file size. Video games are designed to be a fourth form of
entertainment, joining books, movies, and television shows. However, the content has certainly always
been changing within any given video game title; a larger, more recent genre known as first person
shooters (FPS) or specific role playing games (RPGs), these types of video games are developed and
rated by global software rating companies, worrying some consumers that most mature themed video
games will create violent behavior in a player. This speculation of violent video games affecting a
person s everyday behavior negatively is incorrect and ironically childish over a simple form of time

After reading The Art of Fiction by John Gardner, I am definitely more knowledgeable on the topic of
writing fiction than I was before. The first sentence of this book reads, This is a book designed to
teach the serious beginning writer the art of fiction (ix). I believe it does just that and perhaps much
more. The book is divided into two main sections: notes on literary aesthetic theory and notes on the
fictional process. This allows the reader to hear commentary on two very different views of fiction,
thus giving the aspiring writer a well rounded understanding of the subject.

In doing so, he has allowed the amateur to experiment in his or her writing without having to worry
necessarily about whether they are following a proper format or style. This makes the writing process
a lot more fun and relaxing. Furthermore, by describing fiction as more a mode of thought for writers
than a means of entertainment, Gardner has given the process of writing fiction an intriguing edge that
makes it much more exciting for the writer.
Another of the book s highlights is its thorough examination of the many different ways and points of
view from which a piece of fiction can be told. This aspect is especially strong when Gardner
discusses such things as metafiction and deconstruction, two fascinating methods of writing fiction
that are probably not well known among most young writers. In explaining these different kinds of
fiction, Gardner also uses many vivid examples, such as passages from many classical works of
fiction, that help the reader truly understand what is being discussed.
Even though I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, there were some aspects of it that I did not
especially care for. The first of these aspects are the sections that are devoted to showing the reader
what errors are commonly made in writing a piece of fiction. Although I do see the value in showing a

The Gulf of Mexico is a partially locked body of water surrounded by the North American continent
(Gulf of Mexico, 2000). The gulf links five southern U.S states: Florida, Alabama, Mississippi,
Louisiana, and Texas and six Mexican states: Tamaulipas, Vera Cruz, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatán,
and Quintana Roo (Gulf of Mexico Facts, 2015). The gulf surrounds Cuba and connects to the Atlantic
Ocean. The Gulf of Mexico may just seem like another body of water, but that is far from the truth.
This body of water has many contributions to society and society has also affected it in many ways
because of its resources. Before doing any research I believed that the Gulf of Mexico was owned by
Mexico and I found out that this was a misconception. No one other than the federal government owns
this body of water. There are Territorial waters, which are areas of a body of water that contact land
and are claimed by an specific country (Who Owns the Gulf of Mexico? 2010). This means that there
is a 12 miles wide band that would belong to what ever land it touches. For example 12 miles out of
the coast of Florida belong to the United States. However, parts of the Gulf of Mexico can be leased to
petroleum and gas companies in order for the government and the companies to create a profit. The
word profit takes me to one of my points of this paper on how the Gulf of Mexico helps the people
