Analysis Of Gulliver s Travels By Jonathan Swift
WHO DIED AND NAMED YOU SUPERIOR
What are some of the characteristics that makes humans a distinct species? According to National
Geographic s article, Minds of Their Own , higher capability human like characteristics include, good
memory, a grasp of grammar and symbols, self awareness, understanding others motives, imitating
others, and being creative (Morell). Because humans possess all these skills we automatically assume
we are the dominant race. What if we knew animals possessed these skills as well? Would we still
think we are superior? The fact is that, animals share and express human like capabilities.
Authors like Jonathan Swift have used their works to shine a light on the similarities between humans
and animals. In Part ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Well surprise, animals have dialects too. According to the Huffington Post Science article, Human
Intelligence , killer whales share a complex language of their own and dolphins have individual names
just like [humans] based on whistle signals (Mosbergen). Similarly, Professor Con Slobodchikoff,
from Northern Arizona University, has been studying and recording the calls of the Gunnison s prairie
dog for three decades (Edwards). Based off of these recordings many other scientists have discovered
that the evolved complex language of the prairie dogs contain varying numbers of frequency
modulations, barks, squeals and squeaks, and each animal has unique tonal qualities (Edwards). Not
only have animals established different dialects, like humans, animals speak and understand extremely
complicated speaking patterns that humans have failed to notice on a daily basis.
Scientists recognize specific skills as key signs of high cognitive abilities: they include...self
awareness amongst many other variables (Gaertner). Self awareness is the pivot point upon which all
development depends (Craig). And without self awareness there is no way to anchor your journey, no
way to orient yourself, no way of knowing if you are losing or finding your way (Craig). Clearly being
self aware is extremely important to the development and livelihood of the human race. It s such an
important trait that all humans are taught to inherit it

The Drought Of The Western United States
WP 4
The drought in the western United States is a nationwide concern that directly affects every person in
California. It is every person s responsibility to use water sustainably and no college, including the
University of Southern California, is an exception. Rather than lagging behind sustainable water
usage, USC should be at the forefront of it. On the surface of USC s environmental sustainability
campaign, it seems as if they are making sweeping changes; however directly under the first layer of
facts there are holes in their plan. If USC made small changes to both their resident hall and
landscaping water use, they could not only save money but also better USC s environmentally friendly
status. Regardless of whether or not California is in a drought, USC should still strive to be a model
for water sustainability because it would not only better the school s reputation of being a green
university, but it would also save money. From a wider scope of things, water usage is important for
more reasons than solely the drought in California. As the world s population nears 7.4 billion people,
more people are born each day compared to how many pass away. Looking at the world s total volume
of water, only 2.5% of it is drinkable fresh water. Furthermore, 70% of that freshwater is frozen. With
an every increase population like the one we have today, it is likely that water will become the most
important resource to mankind. The problem lies in the way the fresh water is

The Importance Of Government Intervention In Healthcare
Healthcare is a widely debated topic that affects millions of people in this country, whether one is for
universal healthcare or against it. Millions of people across this country have had to deal with
healthcare one way or another. Having the government intervene in such matters makes things
complicated from Cost to HIPPA and Interventions. The purpose of this paper is to discuss why
government intervention should be limited in terms of healthcare.
The first major reason why government intervention poses a problem for most people is the cost. Most
people do not have the means to deal with healthcare without some type of intervention from the
government but the type of intervening they need may cost them more than they were ready to take
on. As costs increase, we hear or read almost daily that some 39 to 40 million people are without
insurance for medical care. (Grosse). This is due to the rising in cost that the government has put on its
citizens. While the government tries it s best to ensure that everyone is well covered there are still
certain situations that cause people to have to pay tremendous amounts of money out of pocket for
medication and supplies necessary for them. A recent government report stated that for Medicare
alone, more than $2 billion dollars is lost every month due to waste, mismanagement, and fraud.
(Grosse). This causes family across the country to have to make up for this loss by paying for it
themselves, and due to the mismanagement of our

Examples Of Josephus Problem
The next base the essay will explore is base 3 also known as ternary, this is the base that was used in
the original Josephus problem. By exploring this base and a few more bases, I will find a pattern and
derive an equation to solve Josephus problem with any number of people in any number base.
Josephus problem in base 3 is when each person kills the person who sits two seats away from him
and the following diagram will demonstrate how it happens, the numbers on the inside show the order
of the people that are gone which will make it easier to follow.
Figure 7 An example of how Josephus problem works in base 3 with 12 people
I will now create the same table as I did for the problem in a binary form.

Applying the equation to Josephus problem, to find we have to find as . We know how to solve as
there are only 2 people and starts meaning he has to skip and therefore dies first and wins. Now we
know that , we can see from the table above the answer is correct however we have to do it once more
to find .
We can always consider position and we have to repeat the equation until getting to the required
number. This solution can be very frustrating as you must do the same thing over and over, however it
can be programmed very easily and save a lot of time.
This method is the third and the last method to solve the Josephus problem, it is the most useful
method as it works for all bases however it is the most complicated one. In order to compare between
this method and the other two methods, we first have to write the equation in base

Network Server Security
Network Server Security
The network server at focus in this study is one utilized primarily for data storage and internal
application sharing as well as for securing numerous desktop computers connected to the network.
This work will describe access control that would be put in place for each of these with explanations
on why these would be used. A message of at least 20 characters will be generated using a Vigener
cipher keys that is at least three letters long, The message will be encrypted along with an explanation
of how secure this message is and why. The form of security chose for the network will be identified
with physical and electronic security considered. Included will be virus checks, firewalls, and
encryption protocols as well as any access protocols explaining how each secures the network. This
work will additionally list three specific project goals which if met would reduce or alleviate any
problems or deficiencies.
I. Database Access for Data Storage and Internal Application Sharing and Desktop Computers
Security controls for the network system involves the creation of access and use for each user or user
group. The control is used to restrict a list of possible actions down to the allowed actions. For
example, encryption can be used to restrict access to data, application controls to restrict processing
via authentication, and DRM storage to prevent unauthorized accesses. (Securosis, 2012) The
necessary controls are determined by first listing out

World Order Research Paper
The world order, in general, refers to the economic, political or social state of affairs prevailing in the
world at a given time and the corresponding effect this has on the different relationships countries
have among each other. In this essay, I will argue that the world order is not in fact changing and that
we are not witnessing a power shift from the West to the rest of the world. To prove this, I will analyse
in terms of hard and soft power how the West is still the more dominant party. Firstly, I will compare
the military and economic power of the US and China and come to the conclusion that the US is the
more dominant power. Next, I will demonstrate how in terms of foreign policy and political power the
US commands more soft power ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It could, therefore, be argued that these increased political tensions may cause the US to lose key allies
and in turn help China become the more favoured country. However, in recent times, China has proven
to be arrogant, aggressive and rude when it comes to executing its foreign policy. Many countries,
including Japan and India, claim to find it increasingly challenging to cooperate with China and this
has done nothing but push said countries towards the US and cemented the US s global power.
Therefore, it is clear that even in terms of soft power, the US scores much higher than China and as a
result there will be no shift in power which re emphasizes the fact that the world order is not changing.
In conclusion, I have argued that the world order is not changing. In order to prove this, I have first
established that in terms of hard power (militarily and economically) the US is the more dominant
power and as a result there appears to be no power shift. Furthermore, I have shown that even in terms
of soft power (using foreign aid and foreign policy) the US still scores ahead of China, once again
indicating no signs of a power

Sandusky Scandal Analysis
The Sandusky scandal at Penn State affected many organizational functions for the esteemed
university and the impact covering illegal activity was intensified. The crisis negatively affected the
organization and its functions. Graham Spanier, Gary Schultz, Timothy Curley, and Joe Paterno had an
obligation to disclose the crimes of Sandusky (Crandall, Parnell, Spillan, 2013). These four men were
in management/leadership roles and their actions affected their respective departments, as well as
other organizational functions throughout the university. Another function that immediately comes to
mind is human resources, as human resources is responsible for human capital. The loss of key staff
and the knowledge that goes with that personnel must be replaced. Furthermore, human resources
must step in along with other members of the crisis management team to attempt to contain and limit
the damage. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Prejudice and Racial Discrimination in America Essay
It has been over 500 years since Columbus sailed the ocean blue and yet the vast majority of that time
has been filled with the woes, hatred and oppression of the American white man for his darker skinned
brethren. If we take as our assumption that such racially motivated injustice can not be justified and
should not persist then we must first understand how such an obvious imbalance came to be and what
can and should be done to avert it in the future. Historically hatred was born out of fear and
misunderstanding of cultural, religious and physical differences, and the economic necessities of the
time. It persisted because of the even greater fear of admitting ones mistakes and the divestiture of

While the blacks may have allowed the shackles to be brought in place, it was most certainly the
colonial English that turned the key. The English brought with them a distaste for anything foreign and
an ingrained belief in the superiority of their own customs (Takaki 26 9, 51 2). Bolstered by their
belief in intrinsic differences, it was the economic necessity of the times that allowed them to
overcome their inherent moral discomfort with slavery.
The simple fact of the matter is that the colonies and especially the people running them needed to
make money. The north turned to manufacturing and thus needed skilled labor to succeed, something
slaves were not likely to provide, but the South was better suited to agriculture particularly large cash
crops of tobacco and later cotton. Once the colonies were successfully civilized that one might expect
people to live a good many years, it was suddenly very profitable to have slave employed for life as
opposed to servants one must eventually dismiss (Takaki 65 6). Thus I believe that the great slave
institution was formed by taking a race which already represented an outcast minority and legalizing
exactly what the great landlords felt was most necessary to the profitability of the colony. Thus was

Who Moved My Cheese By Dr. Spencer Johnson
Introduction
Who Moved My Cheese is a best selling fictional book written by Dr. Spencer Johnson. The story
takes place in Chicago, where several classmates get together for a class reunion. The main characters
of the story include Michael, who is the storyteller, Sniff, Scurry, Hem, and Haw. The characters show
different qualities throughout the story, both good and bad. The book is basically a story within a
story. In the book, Michael narrates a story to his classmates hoping that they will take something
from it and put it into practice in their own lives.
Summary
At the beginning of the book, a man named Michael makes his way to a class reunion and decides to
meet with his classmates afterwards to learn more about what is going on in their lives. As him and his
classmates are gathered they start talking about how things did not pan out like they thought they
would in high school. It was here in the story where you could see that the main theme of the book is
Change . Michael and his classmates had mentioned that we don t want to change when things change
(Johnson, 1998, pg. 1). It was then that Michael mentioned a story that had to deal with change and
decided to tell it to his classmates. (Johnson, 1998)
The story begins with four main characters, which are Hem, Haw, Sniff, and Scurry. Sniff and Scurry
were described as two little people (Johnson, 1998, pg. 3) while Hem and Haw were described as
mice. The mice and little people lived in a maze and for every

Similarities Between Jeffersonian And Jacksonian Eras
The main themes I noticed in this week s material were pushing the powers of the presidency and
curbing those powers, manifest destiny, changes within the political parties, and the idea of fighting
for the little guy.
Some significant continuities I saw in the Jeffersonian and Jacksonian eras were the fundamentals of
the party in power. From Jefferson s presidency throughout Jackson s, sitting presidents typically
advocated for small government and for a strict construction of the constitution (Milkis and Nelson
131). Conversely, some significant changes I saw were to the political parties themselves, both the
Federalists and the Democratic Republicans saw many changes to their parties. And lastly, Jackson s
reinventing of the use of the Veto ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Up until Jackson s presidency, a veto was only used to stop a piece of legislation if the President
viewed it as unconstitutional (Milkis and Nelson 137). However, Jackson believed that a president
should reject any bill he felt would injure the nation (Milkis and Nelson 138). This new interpretation
of the veto gave the President the power to reject legislation on personal opinion alone. Although
Congress was clearly disturbed with Jackson s veto, he maintained the people s faith and was reelected
as president the same year (Milkis and Nelson 138 139).
What I was most surprised by this week was Jackson s wording in much of the Indian Removal Act.
There were a couple places that seemed to just fall short of inciting violence. Despite knowing the
carnage that followed, I guess I expected the bill itself to be less odious. Jackson also announced his
legal inability to protect Indians from state authorities if they chose not to volunteer their lands, clearly
suggesting that any lingering natives in state territories were free to abuse (Brinkley and Dyer 94).
Obviously, the intent was nefarious, I was just shocked that there was no attempt to mask that

The Case Of Alfie And Peggy
The fundamental issue in the case of Alfie and Peggy is whether the items in question are a part of the
land (fixtures) that can be acquired by Alfie in the convenyancing process, or whether they are an item
of personal property (chattels) that belong in the hands of the seller Peggy . According to the Latin
maxim quicquid plantatur solo, solo cedid # , Alfie can claim ownership rights to the items in
question, if they are attached to the soil of the land. In other words, the items must all be fixtures
rather than chattels, for Alfie to seek ownership.
At face value, if an item is physically attached or annexed to the land, it is regarded as a fixture. It
could be argued that the antique mirror in the Queen Victoria is therefore a fixture, as it has been
screwed into a part of the land, meaning Alfie can make a claim of ownership to it. However, physical
attachment of an item is not enough to prove its fixture status. The degree of attachment, as described
by Lord Lloyd in Elitestone Ltd v Morris#, is also important in determining whether an item is a
fixture. For a fixture to exist, the level of attachment must be high. It could be argued that the action of
screwing a mirror into the walls of the Queen Victoria is indeed a very high level of attachment, and
even though items like the mirror may be easy to remove, as proven in Holland v Hodgson#, these
items are still fixtures because of the scale of their attachment. The level of the attachment and the
physical

How Did Rome Influence The World
Although Rome was an ancient civilization that started circa 753 BC, there was a lot that the world
had to take away from it. Rome s heaviest influence on the world was politics and language. It also
influenced the family values and the patriarchy for others to also adopt and continue. Rome had fallen
in 476 AD, but some of its values and culture would be preserved and still be present to this day. The
heaviest influence on United States politics were the Romans. When the Founding Fathers were in the
midst of scraping the United States into a nation, they turned to the Roman Empire to base our laws

Perennial Wisdom Healing Grace For Personal And...
Shamanism Today: Perennial Wisdom Healing Grace for Personal Planetary Evolution.
By Oscar Miro Quesada, M.A., Psy. ET.
Today s shaman leaves new footprints on paths of psychic awareness and spiritual wisdom that are
over thirty thousand years old. Shamanism is a millennial tradition of healing, power and wisdom that
sees all of life as interconnected and sacred. Material and spiritual worlds interpenetrate one another,
and the shaman s path lies in attaining a life of harmony with both. The process of shamanic
awakening is as vast as the universe itself. It excludes no one, and yet includes only those willing to
surrender a limited sense of self. One must live it to understand it.
In the shamanic world view, mind and body are inseparable. There is no distinction perceived between
physical, psychological, spiritual an social ills. Even life an death are not seen as separate conditions.
Healing in a native sense means making a person whole by restoring the health of the body, mind,
spirit and community. Tribal shamanic societies believe that we are part of the universe and must be in
balance with all of Mother Earth and Father Sky in gratitude to Great Spirit. The have much to teach
us today.
Twelve Core Principles
The magic and power of shamanism is grounded in a set of values and perceptions that extend beyond
what we usually consider reality. Shamanic tradition clearly understands that two worlds exist: the
Seen and the Unseen. Both are equally real All

The Lexical Decision Task Shows Evidence Towards Readiness
The Lexical Decision task shows evidence towards readiness to recall and semantic memories used in
the form of associations based on relatedness of words in the experiment. This experiment is
important because it attempts to understand how people develop, store, and use memories to their
advantage. Additionally, the Lexical Decision Task attempts to explain why how long term memory is
used and under what circumstances it is recovered. Memory is a crucial part of life for most people. It
is the way that we participate in our every day lives. Without memories, people would not be able to
build relationships with others, learn valuable survival and intellectual skills, or even retain that eating
and drinking water is how humans stay alive. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
From short term memory, there will be an encoding and retrieval process where long term memory
will be developed. There, some of the information is retained and some of it is lost over a passage of
time. The long term memory stage has the longest potential duration and can be recalled for years after
initial understanding. Evidence to support this model comes from an experiment published in the
Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior in 1966 by Murray Glanzer and Anita Cunitz. There
experiment showed the serial position effects known as primacy, words at the beginning of a list are
more easily recalled, and recency, words at the end of a list are more easily recalled. These result
supported Atkinson and Shiffrin s model by showing that long term memory and short term memory
were separate stages. The recency effect showed that words in short term memory were more easily
remembered. While the primacy effect showed that words in long term memory were more easily
remembered because they had been rehearsed (Glanzer and Cunitz, 1966). Because of the simplicity
of the modal model presented by Glanzer and Cunitz in 1966, there were several critiques that
provided doubt to the accuracy of the model. Two of these critiques were Alan Baddeley and Graham
Hitch, who believed they could build off of Glanzer and Cunitz s model to produce a stronger
illustration of short term memory (working memory). A significant addition to their model

The Godfather Violence
The Godfather (1972) is a one of a kind film. I consider it one of the best American classics. This film
has it all from amazing action scenes that have you on the edge of your seat wanting to know what is
going to happen next. The film also includes incredible famous actors, which includes Marlon Brando,
Al Pacino, and James Cann among many others. Throughout the film the main theme of the film
overall is violence. It is either really happening in a scene or it is being talked about between the
characters in the film. But in my opinion it all this violence that makes this film a classic. The
Godfathers opening scene is of a man ask for the help of Don Vito Corleone. Hey askes for some men

had refused Sollozzo s offer. In that same time Sollozzo manages to capture Tom to try to convince
him to Sonny, Don Corleone s oldest son, to take the offer. This scene contains a lot of emotional
appeal towards Don Corleone, even though he is a mob boss, probably because of all the respect that

There were many reasons that the U.S. was brought into World War I. With the assassination sparking
the start of World War I, the U.S. didn t enter the war right away. In fact, the U.S. waited about 3 years
to enter the war. They wanted to stay neutral and thought that the war was none of their concern.
Shortly after the start of the war, Woodrow Wilson declared a policy of neutrality. They wouldn t be

How did new technology in World War I influence warfare? Do you think this was (and continues to
be) a positive or negative influence. Explain your answer with specific examples and details.
New technology that appeared in World War I influenced war in many ways. There were many new
advances in technology in World War I. Major advances were things like aircraft, aircraft carriers,
tanks, and new weapons like the flamethrower. There were also small inventions and advances like
tracer bullets and mobile x ray machines. It influenced the war because it gave new ways to attack
enemies and gave the thought of having more power. With all of the advances in weapons, it
influenced to attack and try to overcome one s enemy. It also gave leaders the thought that they had
even more power with the new advances. I think that it was both a positive and negative influence. I
am more on the positive side because it helped to defeat enemies faster and may have ended the war
quicker. I am also against it because it influenced more war, not less. In today s world, I think that
again it s both positive and negative. I am more on the negative

Antonio Gramsci Prison Notebooks
Antonio Gramsci s ideology adheres to the fundamental re orientation of Marxist thought applied to
the revolutionary change in the context of 20th Century Western European society. His discourse on
the dynamics of class struggle and the power of dominating institutions, forms the foundation of a
distinct cultural critique of the causes and consequences of the elite s maintenance of hegemony
(dominance) that is, through the consent of the mass of people as a result of the ruling classes
propagation of false consciousness. Whilst accepting Marx s analysis of capitalism and the ongoing
struggle between the ruling class and the subordinate working class as the driving force which

This was then the main task of a socialist movement, with the intention of breaking the ideological
bonds between the ruling class and the general population. The central theme of Gramsci s theoretical
reflections in his prison notebooks is the taking and management of power by an emerging historical
force intent on creating a new civilisation. In his writings, Gramsci s exploration on the potential of
Marxism, enabled an alternative form of a communist society. In response to the emergence of a
totalitarian regime under Stalin, Professor Pellicani revived the works of Gramsci to offer an
alternative to communism which aimed at a truer Marxism devoid of coercion and evil. While the
fundamental nature of Marxism calls on the need for a utopian society, Pellicani concludes that
through an attempt to reorganise civilisation according to a single principle, totalitarianism is the
inevitable result of all programs that aim at a perfect world. In the aftermath of the Russian Revolution
and Lenin s leadership, the Russian state and its coercive arms allowed for the dictatorship of Stalin to
arise. Stalinism enforced state terror, rapid industrialisation and a command economy whereby all
society was subservient to Stalin s will. A cult of personality was developed with Stalin placed as the
super human embodiment of the Russian Revolution Stalin, man of steel; perfection of Soviet man. A
critical objective of Stalinism was the concept of a classless society. While the basis of communism
stems from marxist theory, Gramsci stressed that socialism could never be imposed from above, but
would have to be the self conscious expression of the oppressed groups

Homosexuality in Eighteenth Century England
Though same sex relationships have been a prominent aspect of many cultures almost since the
beginning of time, there has historically been a significant taboo surrounding the phenomenon in the
Western world. From the Fourteenth Century on, Western Europe was gripped by a rabid and
obsessive negative preoccupation with homosexuality as the most horrible of sins (Boswell 262). The
majority of people did not understand or accept the idea, and consequentially did not have an
appropriate way of talking about it. Over the years, as various cultures identified and even
implemented practices currently associated with homosexuality, there arose a need for common
terminology. Until the eighteenth century, it was referred to through the practices ... Show more

This recognition of sodomy as the characterizing practice of homosexuals indicates society s general
disregard of women as homosexuals. It was apparently beyond the capability of most people during
the eighteenth century even to consider that women could engage in any practice so unnatural and
strange. Women, themselves, used this disbelief to their advantage, as in the case of a woman
suspected of homosexual involvement, a suspected Mistress Clap, who was asked by a judge whether
she had anything to say for herself. I hope it will be considered that I am a woman, she replied briefly,
and therefore it cannot be thought that I would ever be concerned with such practices (Hyde 64).
Besides denying any involvement by women in such practices, one of the other beliefs commonly held
in England during the eighteenth century was that young boys learned, or were inadvertently taught to
be homosexual. One widely accepted belief blamed the teaching of such deviance on their schooling.
Male bonding in schools was crucial. Its result was radical female isolation and a complex pattern of
male friendship codes instilled by years of male bonding (Rousseau 144). In another argument against
schools in the charge of encouraging homosexual tendencies, An early eighteenth century work called
Plain Reasons for the Growth of Sodomy in England blames the custom of sending young boys to

innocent humans for fun, Rainsford struggled to withstand a fate of murder. Luckily, he was the first
to fully escape the wilderness with his sidekick, Eve. Audiences of this film have truly witnessed
hunting through the eyes of the prey alongside this main character. Overall, the film presented its short
story exceptionally well. Throughout the movie, a thrilling mood was established, just like the text
version. Although, the feeling of solitude was not presented effectively. In the text, Rainsford was on
his own whilst being hunted by General Zaroff. Readers formed a sensation of seclusion as they
indulged in Rainsford s thoughts. However, he never was actually alone in the film. There was always
another character with him, which prevented a solitary mood from appearing. ... Show more content

The way Rainsford ended up on the island was, in fact, the largest plot change. He was originally
supposed to fall off of the ship due to his sense of curiosity. Instead, Rainsford s ship wrecked and left
him as the only survivor. The director probably decided to make this adjustment in order to emphasize
the fact that Zaroff typically shot down passing ships, as it was not directly stated in the film. Another
difference was the amount characters. While there were only about four characters in the text, a much
larger assortment of characters were in the film. For example, Rainsford experienced the game with
some sort of love interest named Eve. Together they discovered Zaroff s gruesome sport and escaped,
which was not the case in the

Religion Research Paper
Adherents of all the world s major faiths believe that their respective religions had a starring role in
the very creation of mankind. Luckily, it is unnecessary to verify any such claims to realize that those
very religions have played a major role in shaping mankind throughout history. Be it as a tool through
which to consolidate and administer power in the case of the Pharaohs of Ancient Egypt, a call to arms
to conquer the Iberian Peninsula and the storied Eastern Roman Empire in the case of the Caliphs of
Islam, and as a force that brought together people from different classes, languages, and countries in
the case of the Holy Crusades launched by the Roman Catholic Popes.

Coming to Secretary of State John Kerry s plan to establish an Office of Religious and Global Affairs
this is nothing short of belated. There is plenty of past legislation that serves as a building block if not
a precedent. It was, after all, all the way back in 1998 that the International Religious Freedom Act
(IRFA) was signed into law, leading to the state sanctioned promotion of religious freedom overseas.
This is not, of course, to say that there are no potential problems with the creation of this office.
Primarily, the potential overestimation of the role of religion in global affairs. Even back in the 8th
century, evidence suggests that the Iberian Caliphate was no set up on account of pure religious fervor
but also as a result of personal ambitions, power politics, and geopolitical concerns. These same
factors, and many more, continue to play a role today. None should be overlooked through a myopic
viewing of the situation through the frame of religion alone.
If one were to assume that all terror is caused by people of the Islamic faith this may well lead to a
simplistic ban of Muslims which could ultimately exasperate the issue of terrorism instead of
addressing it. But a complete shift in thinking where the focus is suddenly shifted unto religion alone
is not what is being suggested.
John Kerry has been very clear in his intentions

The Social Arrangement That Permits Have More Than One...
Polygyny, the social arrangement that permits a man to have more than one wife at the same time,
exists in all parts of the world. Although looked down upon by societies views mainly in developed
countries, among the 849 human societies, 75 percent practice polygyny. Seeing this, although
common in developed countries, it poses a question for the origin of monogamy. Is monogamy really
the prevalent practice or simply a moral ideology?
Ancient Hebrews, Mormons in the United States and Chinese traditionalists, originated the practice of
polygyny, however the modern day practice is concentrated in Africa, the Middle East, and Indonesia.
Although in a much advanced time, the traditionalist understanding for polygamy still holds true for
majority of those who practice it. Men are able to acquire these wives based on distinct factors, not a
brawl for all, as many perceive it to be. Polygamy is used for many different reasons. Per
Anthropologists it could be used for the following purposes: Increase the probability of children,
increase labor supply within a kinship network, dealing with the problem of surplus women,
attempting to expand a man s alliance (more power) or to provide sexual satisfaction during periods of
post partum for the woman (Macfarlane 1986). Polygamy is inclusive but not restrictive to the wives
sharing the same home along with the same husband. Some have wives with different homes that are
interdependent of one another. These forms of marriage are called

Leviathan By Thomas Hobbes
Leviathan by Thomas Hobbes was written in 1651 to publish the political thoughts of Hobbes and
promote his negative view to human nature. The story is interesting, because of the fact that even
though it was written four hundred years ago, it can still be applied to society today. Leviathan
consists of many sections promoting Hobbes beliefs, but the section in Perry s textbook is about the
misinterpretation of equality of mankind. Hobbes wrote this to explain to the population the
selfishness of humanity and to rid the world of power and corruption. However, Hobbes does not see
much of a chance for humanity to actually treat each other equally. Instead, he splits the disagreements
of mankind into three categories, first, competition; secondly, diffidence; thirdly, glory (21). ... Show

Our natural instinct as humans is to become and want to become as powerful as we possibly can. He
attributes this attribute to our desire for gain and to be the master of other people as well. It is easy to
see this attribute in our world leaders like the President of the United States or any of the other leaders
of the many countries on our planet. Another area of our society that this attribute of gain and
selfishness, especially in the United States, is in the corporate world. Many of our powerful business
leaders are driven by great and power over others, and this drive only proves Hobbes point about the
naturally selfish nature of humanity. Looking back at the 1600, Hobbes time, the drive for man to
compete was very relevant in leadership positions of countries. Many of the kings and dictators of
history have been driven to compete by the drive to power. Each ruler is driven by their own specific
reason to compete, but when push comes to shove, our nature is to compete for what we want, not to
compromise for

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) Essay
If you owe your bank a hundred pounds, you have a problem; but if you owe it a million, it has.(1)
In the year of 1327, Kind Edward III of England defaulted on his Italian debts. This caused the banks
of Bardi and Peruzzi in Florence to collapse. Who would know that over 650 years later, the world
would still have these types of problems? After World War II, the need for an organization like the
IMF was finally realized. After the war, politicians and economists began to work on blue prints for a
postwar world. They envisioned a liberal international economic order, based on stable world
currencies and revived world trade. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) finally came into
existence on December 27, 1945. On this date, twenty nine ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

International banks have made risky loans all over the world because they knew that if trouble arose,
the fund would step in to resolve the situation as it has done in the past. The IMF has played a critical
role in many of the epochal events in the 1990 s. The IMF lent 18 billion dollars to Mexico in 1994,
after the peso collapsed. It gave Russia over 10 billion dollars in 1999. The IMF has helped drive
inflation from 1,000 percent a year down to a tolerable 10 percent a year, thanks to Russia listening to
what the IMF said and doing as they suggested. It has given Indonesia 10 billion dollars, and has
helped Indonesia demonopolize industries. It gave 4 billion to Thailand, which was the epicenter of
the East Asian Crisis. The IMF helped closed dozens of reckless banks. True, the IMF did many little
things wrong, however, it did the important ones right. The Philippines is a prime example on how
effectively the IMF can work. For years, Filipinos suffered the weaknesses of economic and business
policies. Under the tutelage of the International Monetary Fund for nearly 30 years, and especially
during the past decade, they faced up to their problems. Many sectors of their society suffered greatly,
and some complained loudly. However, they persisted and, with the help of the IMF and the courage
of the Philippine people, they exited from the IMF program. How did they do this? They assembled

Michael Francis Moore is a controversial American filmmaker who has directed numerous
documentaries. These documentaries have taken a large spectrum of popular American issues and
reduced them to one: capitalism. His most popular cinematic works include Bowling for Columbine,
Fahrenheit 9/11, Capitalism: A Love Story, and most
notably, SiCKo. With a liberal stance, Moore has

During Moore s adventure, the United Dawli 10 States Coast Guard stops and questions Moore and
his crewmembers about their destination. Moore cleverly answers, We re not going to Cuba! We re
going to America! It s American soil (SiCKo). This voyage is humorous because Moore plays upon
the irony that in order for American citizens to receive free quality health care, they must be taken the
prison, which houses some of America s most dangerous criminals. Another example in the film is
when Moore discovers in a British hospital corridor a CASHIER window, which he pretends to
suppose is the hidden flaw in British free health services (Callenbach 18). However, he soon learns
that the Cashier is actually a place where the hospital pays its patients for any costs they may have
incurred throughout their stay, such as transportation costs to and from the hospital. Moore compares
the fact that people can actually get paid to go to the hospital in England, to America where patients
need to pay for their health care, and illustrates this point using humor and sarcasm. As Chapman
illustrates, Documentary is also recognized as being a very engaged sort of cinema, which means that
there are inevitably pressures and sometimes conflicting claims (Chapman 8). In other words,

The Art of Benin Essay
Why is the ownership of Benin Art so controversial?
The ownership of Benin Art could have been so controversial for a number of reasons. Most notably I
would say, is due to the Anthropologists seeing it as a cultural insight into the history of Benin
however when people were introduced to start looking at the artefacts from also a more artistic
approach, this, for the anthropologists was taking the cultural effect away from it. Some people may
have felt hostile to how these artefacts were obtained from Benin to start with. We are informed that
they were forcibly removed from their origin by the Westerners and therefore, the natives, especially,
felt that this was and is where they belonged and not in a European Gallery. Some see it ... Show more

The main issue lies in the fact that these are key artefacts for Benin and hold a huge part of the culture
and history, which for obvious reasons, make these Sculptures more than just an art piece for outsider
people to look at. These all hold meaning to the people of Benin and Africa, yet they have been taken
away.
Everybody sees art from a different perspective; it will signify something to one person that won t
necessarily be the same as the next person who observes it. However, the problem here is that to the
Africans, these artefacts have more or less the same meaning and explanation to them all, symbolising
the same things, and cultural events, changes, a description of their history almost. Which therefore
really makes you feel where they belong is back in Africa, their true home with representing their true
meaning. On the other hand, the debate lies in those who believe the artefacts can be represented in
Western countries. Note they do not at any point say they are in the right place by being in the Western
side but they do believe that their presence in national galleries throughout much of Europe is and will
only be a positive thing for the Africans and the Europeans
This view is highlighted by the situation of which we find ourselves in today, for example, very
prejudice, biased and unfounded opinions cause much conflict between races, cultures religions and
countries and this is

Viva La Vida Coldplay Analysis
Throughout history, there have been countless accounts of empires and kingdoms that have fallen due
to power and corruption. Kings and rulers, who were once able to break all laws without any
consequences, became shadows of their former selves and were forced to be remembered as failures.
The song Viva la Vida by Coldplay shows first hand account of a king, Louis XVI, the last monarch of
France, who had fallen prey to the destruction that power can bring. Listeners get a memoir of this
king who went from being a the pillar of society to a man whose legacy was tarnished by corruption.
Absolute power is able to corrupt even the noblest of hearts and, through the use of metaphor,
Coldplay has shown the regression of a king who s was thought to have everything a man wants. The
narrator is a wealthy king who is used to ruling over others. In the first line of the song Being apart of
the monarch, he was born into a life of luxury, never wanting for anything. In the line One minute I
held the key we see that he once was able to walk with his head held high, holding all the power to do
with as he wished. He was the king and, besides God, there was no one above him. By the line Next
the walls were closed on me the narrator shows lines show exactly how far from grace ... Show more

away by the wave because it was built on sand. As the narrator reflects on his life, he realizes that his

Essay On Google Driverless Cars
The biggest compliment you could possibly give the Google driverless car team is that experiencing
their groundbreaking product feels utterly unremarkable. Dull, even.
But there s more than meets the eyes.
On October second 2015, Dave lee and a group of reporters were given an opportunity to ride in two
of their driverless vehicles.
The first was a modified Lexus that has been out on the streets around here for well over a year now,
and is improving and learning every day as new scenarios are logged and analyzed by the team.
This version, which is the most ready for the roads, though still years off, is essentially a normal car,
except it drives itself.

No steering wheel. No pedals. Nothing really save for a couple of chairs with a control panel in
between.
The prototype was unveiled earlier this year, but we didn t hear much about it. Now, Google had set
up an obstacle course on top of one of its buildings. Across the makeshift course were hazards a child
on a bike, a car pulling out, a man walking aimlessly in front of the car. Naturally, the car dealt with
all this impeccably.
The group of reporters shared their ride with the Guardian s jemima kiss, and while Google wouldn t
let Dave and the reporter s film or take pictures in the vehicle they did convince them to let them
record their experience for that week s edition of Tech Tent. So why unremarkable? Well, like any
good technology, the driverless car technology just works.
As much as Dave like to write about the white knuckle Oh my gosh, there s no driver! ride he had in a
prototype car, that really wasn t the case.
It was slow. It was cautious. It was safe, a more attentive driver than any human could possibly ever
be.
The pod demo was in a highly controlled environment. Nothing was ever going to go wrong (although

  • 2. Analysis Of Gulliver s Travels By Jonathan Swift WHO DIED AND NAMED YOU SUPERIOR What are some of the characteristics that makes humans a distinct species? According to National Geographic s article, Minds of Their Own , higher capability human like characteristics include, good memory, a grasp of grammar and symbols, self awareness, understanding others motives, imitating others, and being creative (Morell). Because humans possess all these skills we automatically assume we are the dominant race. What if we knew animals possessed these skills as well? Would we still think we are superior? The fact is that, animals share and express human like capabilities. Authors like Jonathan Swift have used their works to shine a light on the similarities between humans and animals. In Part ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Well surprise, animals have dialects too. According to the Huffington Post Science article, Human Intelligence , killer whales share a complex language of their own and dolphins have individual names just like [humans] based on whistle signals (Mosbergen). Similarly, Professor Con Slobodchikoff, from Northern Arizona University, has been studying and recording the calls of the Gunnison s prairie dog for three decades (Edwards). Based off of these recordings many other scientists have discovered that the evolved complex language of the prairie dogs contain varying numbers of frequency modulations, barks, squeals and squeaks, and each animal has unique tonal qualities (Edwards). Not only have animals established different dialects, like humans, animals speak and understand extremely complicated speaking patterns that humans have failed to notice on a daily basis. Scientists recognize specific skills as key signs of high cognitive abilities: they include...self awareness amongst many other variables (Gaertner). Self awareness is the pivot point upon which all development depends (Craig). And without self awareness there is no way to anchor your journey, no way to orient yourself, no way of knowing if you are losing or finding your way (Craig). Clearly being self aware is extremely important to the development and livelihood of the human race. It s such an important trait that all humans are taught to inherit it ... • 3. The Drought Of The Western United States WP 4 The drought in the western United States is a nationwide concern that directly affects every person in California. It is every person s responsibility to use water sustainably and no college, including the University of Southern California, is an exception. Rather than lagging behind sustainable water usage, USC should be at the forefront of it. On the surface of USC s environmental sustainability campaign, it seems as if they are making sweeping changes; however directly under the first layer of facts there are holes in their plan. If USC made small changes to both their resident hall and landscaping water use, they could not only save money but also better USC s environmentally friendly status. Regardless of whether or not California is in a drought, USC should still strive to be a model for water sustainability because it would not only better the school s reputation of being a green university, but it would also save money. From a wider scope of things, water usage is important for more reasons than solely the drought in California. As the world s population nears 7.4 billion people, more people are born each day compared to how many pass away. Looking at the world s total volume of water, only 2.5% of it is drinkable fresh water. Furthermore, 70% of that freshwater is frozen. With an every increase population like the one we have today, it is likely that water will become the most important resource to mankind. The problem lies in the way the fresh water is ... • 4. The Importance Of Government Intervention In Healthcare Healthcare is a widely debated topic that affects millions of people in this country, whether one is for universal healthcare or against it. Millions of people across this country have had to deal with healthcare one way or another. Having the government intervene in such matters makes things complicated from Cost to HIPPA and Interventions. The purpose of this paper is to discuss why government intervention should be limited in terms of healthcare. The first major reason why government intervention poses a problem for most people is the cost. Most people do not have the means to deal with healthcare without some type of intervention from the government but the type of intervening they need may cost them more than they were ready to take on. As costs increase, we hear or read almost daily that some 39 to 40 million people are without insurance for medical care. (Grosse). This is due to the rising in cost that the government has put on its citizens. While the government tries it s best to ensure that everyone is well covered there are still certain situations that cause people to have to pay tremendous amounts of money out of pocket for medication and supplies necessary for them. A recent government report stated that for Medicare alone, more than $2 billion dollars is lost every month due to waste, mismanagement, and fraud. (Grosse). This causes family across the country to have to make up for this loss by paying for it themselves, and due to the mismanagement of our ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Examples Of Josephus Problem The next base the essay will explore is base 3 also known as ternary, this is the base that was used in the original Josephus problem. By exploring this base and a few more bases, I will find a pattern and derive an equation to solve Josephus problem with any number of people in any number base. Josephus problem in base 3 is when each person kills the person who sits two seats away from him and the following diagram will demonstrate how it happens, the numbers on the inside show the order of the people that are gone which will make it easier to follow. Figure 7 An example of how Josephus problem works in base 3 with 12 people I will now create the same table as I did for the problem in a binary form. We know how to solve as there are only 2 people and starts meaning he has to skip and therefore dies first and wins. Now we know that , we can see from the table above the answer is correct however we have to do it once more to find . We can always consider position and we have to repeat the equation until getting to the required number. This solution can be very frustrating as you must do the same thing over and over, however it can be programmed very easily and save a lot of time. This method is the third and the last method to solve the Josephus problem, it is the most useful method as it works for all bases however it is the most complicated one. Network Server Security Network Server Security The network server at focus in this study is one utilized primarily for data storage and internal application sharing as well as for securing numerous desktop computers connected to the network. This work will describe access control that would be put in place for each of these with explanations on why these would be used. A message of at least 20 characters will be generated using a Vigener cipher keys that is at least three letters long, The message will be encrypted along with an explanation of how secure this message is and why. The form of security chose for the network will be identified with physical and electronic security considered. Included will be virus checks, firewalls, and encryption protocols as well as any access protocols explaining how each secures the network. This work will additionally list three specific project goals which if met would reduce or alleviate any problems or deficiencies. I. Database Access for Data Storage and Internal Application Sharing and Desktop Computers Security controls for the network system involves the creation of access and use for each user or user group. The control is used to restrict a list of possible actions down to the allowed actions. • 7. World Order Research Paper The world order, in general, refers to the economic, political or social state of affairs prevailing in the world at a given time and the corresponding effect this has on the different relationships countries have among each other. In this essay, I will argue that the world order is not in fact changing and that we are not witnessing a power shift from the West to the rest of the world. To prove this, I will analyse in terms of hard and soft power how the West is still the more dominant party. Firstly, I will compare the military and economic power of the US and China and come to the conclusion that the US is the more dominant power. Next, I will demonstrate how in terms of foreign policy and political power the US commands more soft power ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It could, therefore, be argued that these increased political tensions may cause the US to lose key allies and in turn help China become the more favoured country. However, in recent times, China has proven to be arrogant, aggressive and rude when it comes to executing its foreign policy. Many countries, including Japan and India, claim to find it increasingly challenging to cooperate with China and this has done nothing but push said countries towards the US and cemented the US s global power. Therefore, it is clear that even in terms of soft power, the US scores much higher than China and as a result there will be no shift in power which re emphasizes the fact that the world order is not changing. In conclusion, I have argued that the world order is not changing. In order to prove this, I have first established that in terms of hard power (militarily and economically) the US is the more dominant power and as a result there appears to be no power shift. Furthermore, I have shown that even in terms of soft power (using foreign aid and foreign policy) the US still scores ahead of China, once again indicating no signs of a power ... • 9. Prejudice and Racial Discrimination in America Essay It has been over 500 years since Columbus sailed the ocean blue and yet the vast majority of that time has been filled with the woes, hatred and oppression of the American white man for his darker skinned brethren. If we take as our assumption that such racially motivated injustice can not be justified and should not persist then we must first understand how such an obvious imbalance came to be and what can and should be done to avert it in the future. Historically hatred was born out of fear and misunderstanding of cultural, religious and physical differences, and the economic necessities of the time. It persisted because of the even greater fear of admitting ones mistakes and the divestiture of power From African ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While the blacks may have allowed the shackles to be brought in place, it was most certainly the colonial English that turned the key. The English brought with them a distaste for anything foreign and an ingrained belief in the superiority of their own customs (Takaki 26 9, 51 2). Bolstered by their belief in intrinsic differences, it was the economic necessity of the times that allowed them to overcome their inherent moral discomfort with slavery. The simple fact of the matter is that the colonies and especially the people running them needed to make money. The north turned to manufacturing and thus needed skilled labor to succeed, something slaves were not likely to provide, but the South was better suited to agriculture particularly large cash crops of tobacco and later cotton. Once the colonies were successfully civilized that one might expect people to live a good many years, it was suddenly very profitable to have slave employed for life as opposed to servants one must eventually dismiss (Takaki 65 6). Thus I believe that the great slave institution was formed by taking a race which already represented an outcast minority and legalizing exactly what the great landlords felt was most necessary to the profitability of the colony. • 10. Who Moved My Cheese By Dr. Spencer Johnson Introduction Who Moved My Cheese is a best selling fictional book written by Dr. Spencer Johnson. The story takes place in Chicago, where several classmates get together for a class reunion. The main characters of the story include Michael, who is the storyteller, Sniff, Scurry, Hem, and Haw. The characters show different qualities throughout the story, both good and bad. The book is basically a story within a story. In the book, Michael narrates a story to his classmates hoping that they will take something from it and put it into practice in their own lives. Summary At the beginning of the book, a man named Michael makes his way to a class reunion and decides to meet with his classmates afterwards to learn more about what is going on in their lives. As him and his classmates are gathered they start talking about how things did not pan out like they thought they would in high school. It was here in the story where you could see that the main theme of the book is Change . Michael and his classmates had mentioned that we don t want to change when things change (Johnson, 1998, pg. 1). It was then that Michael mentioned a story that had to deal with change and decided to tell it to his classmates. (Johnson, 1998) The story begins with four main characters, which are Hem, Haw, Sniff, and Scurry. Sniff and Scurry were described as two little people (Johnson, 1998, pg. 3) while Hem and Haw were described as mice. The mice and little people lived in a maze and for every ... • 11. Similarities Between Jeffersonian And Jacksonian Eras The main themes I noticed in this week s material were pushing the powers of the presidency and curbing those powers, manifest destiny, changes within the political parties, and the idea of fighting for the little guy. Some significant continuities I saw in the Jeffersonian and Jacksonian eras were the fundamentals of the party in power. From Jefferson s presidency throughout Jackson s, sitting presidents typically advocated for small government and for a strict construction of the constitution (Milkis and Nelson 131). Conversely, some significant changes I saw were to the political parties themselves, both the Federalists and the Democratic Republicans saw many changes to their parties. And lastly, Jackson s reinventing of the use of the Veto ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Up until Jackson s presidency, a veto was only used to stop a piece of legislation if the President viewed it as unconstitutional (Milkis and Nelson 137). However, Jackson believed that a president should reject any bill he felt would injure the nation (Milkis and Nelson 138). This new interpretation of the veto gave the President the power to reject legislation on personal opinion alone. Although Congress was clearly disturbed with Jackson s veto, he maintained the people s faith and was reelected as president the same year (Milkis and Nelson 138 139). What I was most surprised by this week was Jackson s wording in much of the Indian Removal Act. There were a couple places that seemed to just fall short of inciting violence. Despite knowing the carnage that followed, I guess I expected the bill itself to be less odious. Jackson also announced his legal inability to protect Indians from state authorities if they chose not to volunteer their lands, clearly suggesting that any lingering natives in state territories were free to abuse (Brinkley and Dyer 94). Obviously, the intent was nefarious, I was just shocked that there was no attempt to mask that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. The Case Of Alfie And Peggy The fundamental issue in the case of Alfie and Peggy is whether the items in question are a part of the land (fixtures) that can be acquired by Alfie in the convenyancing process, or whether they are an item of personal property (chattels) that belong in the hands of the seller Peggy . According to the Latin maxim quicquid plantatur solo, solo cedid # , Alfie can claim ownership rights to the items in question, if they are attached to the soil of the land. In other words, the items must all be fixtures rather than chattels, for Alfie to seek ownership. At face value, if an item is physically attached or annexed to the land, it is regarded as a fixture. It could be argued that the antique mirror in the Queen Victoria is therefore a fixture, as it has been screwed into a part of the land, meaning Alfie can make a claim of ownership to it. However, physical attachment of an item is not enough to prove its fixture status. The degree of attachment, as described by Lord Lloyd in Elitestone Ltd v Morris#, is also important in determining whether an item is a fixture. For a fixture to exist, the level of attachment must be high. It could be argued that the action of screwing a mirror into the walls of the Queen Victoria is indeed a very high level of attachment, and even though items like the mirror may be easy to remove, as proven in Holland v Hodgson#, these items are still fixtures because of the scale of their attachment. The level of the attachment and the physical ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Rome s heaviest influence on the world was politics and language. It also influenced the family values and the patriarchy for others to also adopt and continue. Rome had fallen in 476 AD, but some of its values and culture would be preserved and still be present to this day. The heaviest influence on United States politics were the Romans. When the Founding Fathers were in the midst of scraping the United States into a nation, they turned to the Roman Empire to base our laws off of. For example, we adopted the idea of a senate. Material and spiritual worlds interpenetrate one another, and the shaman s path lies in attaining a life of harmony with both. The process of shamanic awakening is as vast as the universe itself. It excludes no one, and yet includes only those willing to surrender a limited sense of self. One must live it to understand it. In the shamanic world view, mind and body are inseparable. There is no distinction perceived between physical, psychological, spiritual an social ills. Even life an death are not seen as separate conditions. Healing in a native sense means making a person whole by restoring the health of the body, mind, spirit and community. Tribal shamanic societies believe that we are part of the universe and must be in balance with all of Mother Earth and Father Sky in gratitude to Great Spirit. The have much to teach us today. Twelve Core Principles The magic and power of shamanism is grounded in a set of values and perceptions that extend beyond what we usually consider reality. Shamanic tradition clearly understands that two worlds exist: the Seen and the Unseen. Both are equally real All ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Lexical Decision Task Shows Evidence Towards Readiness The Lexical Decision task shows evidence towards readiness to recall and semantic memories used in the form of associations based on relatedness of words in the experiment. This experiment is important because it attempts to understand how people develop, store, and use memories to their advantage. Additionally, the Lexical Decision Task attempts to explain why how long term memory is used and under what circumstances it is recovered. Memory is a crucial part of life for most people. It is the way that we participate in our every day lives. Without memories, people would not be able to build relationships with others, learn valuable survival and intellectual skills, or even retain that eating and drinking water is how humans stay alive. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... From short term memory, there will be an encoding and retrieval process where long term memory will be developed. There, some of the information is retained and some of it is lost over a passage of time. The long term memory stage has the longest potential duration and can be recalled for years after initial understanding. Evidence to support this model comes from an experiment published in the Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior in 1966 by Murray Glanzer and Anita Cunitz. There experiment showed the serial position effects known as primacy, words at the beginning of a list are more easily recalled, and recency, words at the end of a list are more easily recalled. These result supported Atkinson and Shiffrin s model by showing that long term memory and short term memory were separate stages. The recency effect showed that words in short term memory were more easily remembered. While the primacy effect showed that words in long term memory were more easily remembered because they had been rehearsed (Glanzer and Cunitz, 1966). Because of the simplicity of the modal model presented by Glanzer and Cunitz in 1966, there were several critiques that provided doubt to the accuracy of the model. Two of these critiques were Alan Baddeley and Graham Hitch, who believed they could build off of Glanzer and Cunitz s model to produce a stronger illustration of short term memory (working memory). This film has it all from amazing action scenes that have you on the edge of your seat wanting to know what is going to happen next. There were many reasons that the U.S. was brought into World War I. With the assassination sparking the start of World War I, the U.S. didn t enter the war right away. In fact, the U.S. waited about 3 years to enter the war. They wanted to stay neutral and thought that the war was none of their concern. The central theme of Gramsci s theoretical reflections in his prison notebooks is the taking and management of power by an emerging historical force intent on creating a new civilisation. In his writings, Gramsci s exploration on the potential of Marxism, enabled an alternative form of a communist society. In response to the emergence of a totalitarian regime under Stalin, Professor Pellicani revived the works of Gramsci to offer an alternative to communism which aimed at a truer Marxism devoid of coercion and evil. While the fundamental nature of Marxism calls on the need for a utopian society, Pellicani concludes that through an attempt to reorganise civilisation according to a single principle, totalitarianism is the inevitable result of all programs that aim at a perfect world. In the aftermath of the Russian Revolution and Lenin s leadership, the Russian state and its coercive arms allowed for the dictatorship of Stalin to arise. Stalinism enforced state terror, rapid industrialisation and a command economy whereby all society was subservient to Stalin s will. A cult of personality was developed with Stalin placed as the super human embodiment of the Russian Revolution Stalin, man of steel; perfection of Soviet man. A critical objective of Stalinism was the concept of a classless society. Homosexuality in Eighteenth Century England Though same sex relationships have been a prominent aspect of many cultures almost since the beginning of time, there has historically been a significant taboo surrounding the phenomenon in the Western world. From the Fourteenth Century on, Western Europe was gripped by a rabid and obsessive negative preoccupation with homosexuality as the most horrible of sins (Boswell 262). The majority of people did not understand or accept the idea, and consequentially did not have an appropriate way of talking about it. Over the years, as various cultures identified and even implemented practices currently associated with homosexuality, there arose a need for common terminology. This recognition of sodomy as the characterizing practice of homosexuals indicates society s general disregard of women as homosexuals. It was apparently beyond the capability of most people during the eighteenth century even to consider that women could engage in any practice so unnatural and strange. Women, themselves, used this disbelief to their advantage, as in the case of a woman suspected of homosexual involvement, a suspected Mistress Clap, who was asked by a judge whether she had anything to say for herself. I hope it will be considered that I am a woman, she replied briefly, and therefore it cannot be thought that I would ever be concerned with such practices (Hyde 64). Besides denying any involvement by women in such practices, one of the other beliefs commonly held in England during the eighteenth century was that young boys learned, or were inadvertently taught to be homosexual. One widely accepted belief blamed the teaching of such deviance on their schooling. Male bonding in schools was crucial. Its result was radical female isolation and a complex pattern of male friendship codes instilled by years of male bonding (Rousseau 144). Although looked down upon by societies views mainly in developed countries, among the 849 human societies, 75 percent practice polygyny. Seeing this, although common in developed countries, it poses a question for the origin of monogamy. Is monogamy really the prevalent practice or simply a moral ideology? Ancient Hebrews, Mormons in the United States and Chinese traditionalists, originated the practice of polygyny, however the modern day practice is concentrated in Africa, the Middle East, and Indonesia. Although in a much advanced time, the traditionalist understanding for polygamy still holds true for majority of those who practice it. The story is interesting, because of the fact that even though it was written four hundred years ago, it can still be applied to society today. Leviathan consists of many sections promoting Hobbes beliefs, but the section in Perry s textbook is about the misinterpretation of equality of mankind. Hobbes wrote this to explain to the population the selfishness of humanity and to rid the world of power and corruption. Another area of our society that this attribute of gain and selfishness, especially in the United States, is in the corporate world.
