Pro Forma Statement
Using Budgets and Pro Forma Statements to Plan Funding:
The pro forma statements and budgets were instrumental in determining what additional measures
needed to be taken to ensure progress within the company. By reviewing the pro forma statements I
was able to determine that I needed to raise the price of my product due to the fact that the target
markets had indicated what they would pay for such product and the cost of production was over
whelming the income received from sales. After the first quarter I was able to decide that changes
needed to be made to not only the price of each product but additional products needed to be added to
meet the needs of specific target areas. I was also able to determine by analyzing the budget ... Show

Lean operations emphasizes the understanding of the customer by producing units only as they are
needed. As individual units are manufactured this reduces inventory drastically. This also would
reduce any waste of products created and not sold. Both of these processes would have been a benefit
to my company as there were several units of certain brands that were not desirable or meeting
customer needs. This caused a loss of revenue by having units that were produced but not sold. The
lean operations and Just In Time methods would eliminate this problem from the manufacturing side
of my company.
Work Cells Vs. Traditional Straight Line Method:
By utilizing work cells in my manufacturing facility I would have been able to reduce travel distance
in production due to the fact that all equipment in work cells is modular. This allows the work cells to
be easily arranged or moved as needed. The implementation of work cells versus straight line
manufacturing would have been beneficial also because it provides an organized workplace and
reduced space for inventory or production materials. Also by using the work cell method of production
defects would be easily detected early, this is because with work cells products are tested at the end of
each production cycle making it easier to detect and fix any defects that may arise.
Inventory Management:

Batman And Byronic Hero
The Byronic hero is immortalized as the bridge between epic hero and an anti hero, in between with
the romantic and tragic hero as well. The main key elements that are present in many Byronic heroes
is their sense of darkness and social exile, the struggle for acceptance not only from themselves but
also from society, and finally internal traumas that were caused from past events. One of the modern
characters that immortalizes the Byronic hero is DC Comics, Batman. From the original comic books,
to television adaptations, and finally to the big screen, there is a lot of material that helps fixate him as
a truly Byronic hero all the way from his childhood to his adult and even afterlife years. Without
describing all of the aspects, there ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In addition to this, another downfall is the loss of childhood sweetheart, Rachel Dawes by Two Face.
She was the only one outside Bruce Wayne s inner circle that knew who he truly was, and how he felt
about his way and life. As a result of her death, not only does he want revenge on Two Face, but he
tries to compensate for the void that was created by her loss. He does this by starting many failed
relationships that turned sour such as those with Poison Ivy and Catwoman, to name a few. These are
illustrative of the pessimistic demeanor that Batman has towards the outside because of what he has
seen firsthand, and how he reacted to it. Lastly, Bruce Wayne uses his massive wealth and intelligence
to build gadgets, utilities, and tools all in an effort to stop villains most of whom are not mortal. We
have to realize that Batman is still a mortal man, and can be killed if due so. Therefore, not only does
he have the intelligence to build whatever to defeat his foes, but he also has the cunningness to defeat
them as well. This is evident in the Batman television series from 1966 to 1969, with Adam West.
Moreover, many of these works that he creates has also caused him lots of pain and trouble that he self
situated himself in. One of the key examples is him battling Bane, where all his utilities has no use,
and he was pummeled by him. All of these aspects of the Byronic hero can be

Catholic Culture
In the monograph entitled, Architects of Catholic Culture, Thomas Cook (2011) notes that there is a
configuration of core beliefs and values that distinguish Catholicism from other Christian
denominations. (p. 17). Among these beliefs is the attitude that community strengthens the individual s
relationship with Jesus, and as such, it is an integral part of faith formation. Additionally, Gospel
values inform the catechesis of elementary schools, which frequently include faith, service, courage,
and social justice, among others. Significantly, faith is not static or unchanging. Faith must be known,
celebrated, lived, and expressed in prayer. (United States Conference of Catholic, 2005). Therefore,
effective catechesis relies on six elements that are fundamental to faith formation. Each element is an
essential component. Initially, knowledge of the faith is acquired through an understanding of the
scriptures as well as an understanding of church traditions. Additionally, an understanding of the
liturgy and the sacraments is gained by participating in the Mass and in the reception of the
sacraments. Further, moral formation is based on an understanding of Christ s moral message. Next,
and fundamental to the Catholic identity is teaching students to ... Show more content on

The Conscript Wilfrid Wilson Gibson Analysis
Wilfrid Wilson Gibson was a British Georgian poet and a lot of his work gets associated with World
War 1. The poet s work originally started out as magical story telling; then abandoned that style for a
more honest, realistic style to life. Not life for the upper class, but for the low level workingman. The
switch to talking about the life of the working class made his work more real; his war poems were told
through the view of the common soldier. His switch in his poetry theme was not pleasing to everyone
though. A conscript is compulsory enlistment for state services, specifically armed forces. The
Conscript is about how working class men, the conscripts, are being examined by doctors to see if
they are in the proper conditions to go to war or be sent home. The doctors do not care if the men die
instantly when they go to war. In The Conscript, Wilfrid Wilson Gibson develops the theme of the
predestined death for the common man. The poet does this by ... Show more content on

Macabre is shocking and gruesome, like the description of the conscripts bodies as they wait to be

explaining they are so badly injured they might as well be dead. Darkened brain is how mentally and
physically affected they are and their dreams are dark, the same as nightmares. In the line prior to
these the word hasty is used meaning how quickly the soldiers will go into war and die without even
being cared about. Gibson develops his own personality with the usage of tone, he is the voice of the
ordinary soldier that gets forgotten about during the time of the big war. The men being examined are
being examined for their death and to have nightmares from the war which is what Gibson wants the
reader to understand that these men being forced to fight are being forced into their death.

Ezekiel Essay
Ezekiel lived in a time of international crisis and conflict. Assyria was the world power in the area
under the rule of Tiglath pilesar III. In 724 B.C Israel raged war upon Assyria, and Israel was no
match for Assyria. In 627 B.C the last of the able Assyrian rulers, Ashurbanipal died. Following the
death of Ashurbanipal, Babylon under Nebuchadrezzer II wanted independence from Assyria. In 614
B.C the Assyrians under Nineveh surrendered to the rising Babylonians. In 605 B.C the Babylonians
defeated the Egyptians and established themselves as the leading power in the area. During all of this
warring, Judah allied itself with Babylonia and kept her independence. However, in 597 BCE, after
failing to continue their payment of tribute, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Other accounts state that Ezekiel went to Babylonia where he kept in touch with Judah, thereby
addressing both communities in a single entry. Nevertheless, whether in Judah or Babylon, Ezekiel
continued to prophesize to the Judeans, before and after the exile of the remaining Hebrews. Before
the destruction of Jerusalem and the temple, Ezekiel prophesized about the total destruction of
Jerusalem, brought on by the Judean s guilt.
Ezekiel, at first, was a reluctant prophet. Unlike other prophets he was married, therefore had
responsibilities to people other than himself. The symbolic scroll, mentioned in the second and third
chapters of Ezekiel. But you mortal, hear what I say to you; do not be rebellious like the rebellious
house; open your mouth and eat what I give you. I [Ezekiel] looked, and a hand was stretched out to
me, and a written scroll was in it... (Cook 1187), was at first bitter but soon turned sweet. This was a
metaphor for God s words, which Ezekiel was reluctant to speak, that in time became easier to
swallow. Ezekiel after this point became the watcher of the house of Israel, responsible for their
survival (Howe 204). Ezekiel s call meant if the Judeans did not heed Ezekiel s word and repent, God
s wrath would overtake them. However, since the chief priesthood of the day, Zadokites, controlled the
temple and believed in the

This means that Arcadia Group is a very stable company and its leaders should not worry about
taxation policy in the future.
Political factors also cover such areas as competition policy, environmental legislation, employment
law, stability of the political system, trade restriction and tariffs etc. According to www.hoovers.com,
the main competitors for Arcadia Group are Next PLC, Marcs amp; Spencer group PLC and
Debenhams. These companies are also very popular and successful not only in the UK, but also in
other European countries. As Worthington and Britton claim (2006), UK government competition
policy has largely been concerned with regulating market behaviour and in particular with controlling
potential abuses of market power by firms acting singly or in concert in specific markets. In the future
Arcadia Group will not become a monopoly, because of such strong competitors and a very strict UK
government competition policy.
Concerning environmental problems Arcadia Group has a responsibility to lower the impact on the
environment. The company makes every effort to reduce consumption of valuable resources such as
energy, water and fuel. They are constantly developing ways to increase the efficiency and reduce fuel
consumption in their transport operations. And company is working hard to ensure they lower

Bone Cancer
Exploring the Symptoms, Treatment, Prevention, and Statistics of Chondrosarcoma and Osteosarcoma
Alexus Edwards Gabrielle Newton
Ms. Knetter A1
Ronald Wilson Reagan College Preparatory IB High School
Bone cancer is an uncommon disease that typically develops in the arm and leg bones (Mayo Clinic,
2015). Every year, there is an estimated 2,970 diagnoses made in the United States between all ages
and genders (Cancer.net, 2014). The two most common types are osteosarcoma and chondrosarcoma,
both of which share similar symptoms, treatment options, and survival rates.
Bone cancer is defined as the uncontrolled growth of bone cells. The first recognizable symptoms are
pain and tenderness in the bone. Other common signs include decreased mobility of a joint, fatigue, as
well as anemia. Bone tumors are a clear indicator of bone cancer, however, they often go unnoticed
until significant pain or injury has been acquired as a result. Apart from tumors, the symptoms of bone
cancer are indecisive and can pertain to a number of medical conditions. This condition cannot be self
diagnosed, but only determined through further inspection by a doctor. (Viswanatha, 2011). There are
two types of bone tumors: benign (non cancerous and typically non threatening) and malignant
(cancerous and requiring medical attention). Such growths are seen in metastatic bone cancers, a type
of cancer that does not originally start in the bones, but spreads to the bones from

Odysseus Justification Of The Suitors In Homer s Odyssey
In The Suitors Odysseus comes back from his journey to find an abundance of suitors in his home
trying to take his wife who has been continuously loyal through the 10 years he was away. Shortly
after Odysseus returns, Penelope retrieves his bow out of the storeroom and reports that she will wed
the suitor who can string it and afterward shoot an arrow through a line of twelve axes. All of the
suitors fail to do and then Odysseus with ease, strings the bow and sends an arrow and completes the
task , shooting the arrow through all twelve axes. Odysseus then grabs another arrow and proceeds to
shoot a second arrow through the throat of Antinous, and the killing of the suitors commenced.
Odysseus actions were justified because all of the suitors got what they deserved trying to take his

supernatural character traits. Beowulf is considered an epic hero because he killed Grendel, Grendel s

Mary Jane And The Wilks Girls
For every single smile of a child and my little brothers.
Once upon a time in a small town, three sad sisters, who had lost their father. Their names were
Joanna, Susan and Mary Jane, the Wilks girls. Joanna was known by her harelips, Susan was pretty,
but not prettier than the oldest sister Mary Jane with all that red hair.
They were waiting for their two uncles from England, William and Harvey. Uncle William was deaf
and dumb, while Uncle Harvey was a minister.
The sisters had not seen their uncles before, all they knew about them were what was written on
letters. Peter Wilks, the girls dad, wrote good things about his brothers.
Someday a crowd gathered before the Wilks home to watch Wilks s three nieces tearfully greet Peter s
brothers. Everybody was excited about something new in the small town.
With the arrival, Mary Jane and Susan ran to their uncles arms. With them, there was a young boy
called Adolphus, who was their servant. However, Joanna realized something strange when she talked
with Adolphus. She was the youngest, but none of the others sisters could beat her smartness.
Mary Jane took care of everything to make sure that her uncles would feel comfortable and at home.
She treated them with care and zeal, cooking delicious meals.
During a dinner, Uncle Harvey read the letter his brother had left. There, was written that six thousand
dollars were in the basement and many properties were given to Peter s brothers

Elizabeth I Has Been Hugely Overrated Essay
How far do you agree that Elizabeth I has been hugely overrated? Elizabeth I is one of the most
portrayed monarchs in television, theatre and films, and polls have named her the best known and
most admired English monarch . However, academic opinions fluctuate greatly1. The state of England
the moment Elizabeth ascended to the throne was far from ideal, she had to face the consequences of
her half brother and half sister s reigns and arguably did so. She reigned for 45 years, in times plagued
by risk of invasion, inflation, rebellions, economic depression and religious discord among other
difficulties. Her death was lamented by some and met with relieve by others. Owing to her illegitimate
status and being the third in line to succeed the throne, it was highly unlikely that Elizabeth would
ever become Queen of England.3 Nevertheless, she succeeded her sister Mary in 1558. Upon taking
the reins, she found herself amidst a myriad of problems; from war with France to tension between
religious factions. It is said that Elizabeth was well aware of the complicated situation she was faced
with, described wryly by a contemporary observer: The Queen poor; the realm exhausted; the nobility
poor and decayed; want of good captains and soldiers; the people out of order; justice not executed;

Criticism of Reality Television
The days of traditional television shows, movies and plays are slowly coming to an end. Many people
have replaced scripted shows with favorite actors with reality television. Reality television has
introduced viewers to a cast of regular people they can relate to, and some of whom they are fond of
or mimic in their day to day life basis. Reality television has however been on the receiving end of
endless criticism. Critics maintain that it has overwhelmingly turned young girls into divas and young
men into bodybuilders . Despite this rapid transition in media that has led many to an inclination
toprefer reality television rather than the traditional television shows, movies and plays, which was the
case many years back, critics feel that the social, moral fabric is eroding at an extremely high rate .
Certainly, this criticism aid in shaping reality television as we shall see in this study .
While network officials and all the brains behind any reality television broadcast that benefit
tremendously from the high ratings of reality television are filled with praise, the industry continues to
face overwhelming criticism (Rose). The strongest of them being talented movie or tv show actors and
scriptwriters who feel that popularity has shifted from talent based shows to reality television. Many
of these actors indeed feel that the many years they have dedicated to the

Morrie Schwartz was a man of great wisdom who loved and enjoyed to see and experience the
simplicity of life, something beyond life s most challenging and unanswered mysteries. It is from
Morrie that we learn that life is most happily experienced when enjoyed and fulfilled to its highest
ability. Morrie touched the lives of many, and he will always be remembered for his sincerity and his
compassion for life and for love. The lessons Morrie loved to teach were of his own experience with
life.
In his lessons, Morrie advises Mitch to reject the popular culture in favor of creating his own. The
individualistic culture Morrie encourages Mitch to create for him is a culture founded on love,
acceptance, and human goodness, a culture that upholds a set of ethical values unlike the mores that
popular culture endorses. Popular culture, Morrie says, is founded on greed, selfishness, and
superficiality, which he urges Mitch to overcome. Morrie also stresses that he and Mitch must accept
death and aging, as both are inevitable.
A symbol that represents Morrie s life throughout the book is the pink hibiscus plant. As Morrie s
body deteriorates, so does the condition of the hibiscus plant. The plant s pink petals wither and fall as
Morrie grows increasingly dependent on his aides and on oxygen. As his death approached, so does
the death of the plant. It is used as a metaphor for Morrie

Tyco Merger
What is your opinion of a merger? If you say and think a merger is a bad thing then you are not alone.
Recently, mergers were given a big thumbs down in a poll given to Americans and Canadians. The
definition of a merger is a combination of two or more businesses to form a single firm. The cons of
mergers greatly outnumber the pros because as companies get larger and larger, people lose jobs,
monopolies form, and consumers pay higher prices, resulting in a less competitive and, therefore, less
opportune business market.
Is bigger really better? Big might be sometimes better, but companies, corporations and monopolies
can get too big. Some merged companies become so huge that they lose focus, gain overhead and
increase their expenses ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Then we have Tyco International Ltd. that merged with Binge/Purge. Such a shame that Tyco s newest
acquisition had questions of fraud, people undermining decisions, and bad accounting practices. My
last example is that of AutoNation. AutoNation is a company recently formed that deals with pre
owned or used cars. It has shut down 23 of its mega stores, and laid off 1,800 employees just because
they overproduced the unwanted plain vanilla models of cars . The company was obviously losing
sight of something important, the demand for that color of car.
Big corporations are less than perfect. As a business gets bigger, the more cons may surface from day
to day business operations. As the company gets bigger, one find oneself having to manage unrelated
businesses, losing strategic focus, dealing with agency costs, administrative costs, having unbalanced
capacities, and ultimately one has a lack of control. Big companies treat consumers different by than
those of a small, competitive business. Big companies try to take over and exploit the economy of the
host nation by paying low wages to workers, by exporting scarce resources, or by adversely interfering
with the development of local business. It just seems that the greater mass achieved by the company
the more it loses sight of what is important. Another big problem with big companies is that they are
so large and wealthy, they may influence the political life of a host nation. As

Sedin sent special regards to his good friends Srdjan, who was in Zvornik. They both grow up in the

of the policies is to insure equivalent access to good health and health care for people in rural places.
The implementation of this policies was highly challenged by different factors including political and
community reactions and therefore the outcome of the policy is affected also (Farmer Currie, 2009) .
Rural health has been always a major concern for different parties in Australia. Various groups are
involved in the process of decision making in order to insure that health care system is accessible and
equitable to every person in Australia including those in rural areas. Examples of these groups are:
Department of Health and Ageing
National Rural Health Alliance
Rural health workforce Australia
AIHW (Australian institute of health and welfare)

Racism In Master Harold And The Boys, By Athol Fugard
Master Harold ...and the Boys, by Athol Fugard takes place in the apartheid regime of South Africa.
The main theme in the play is racism, and the characters Hally, Sam and Willy confront its realities in
various ways throughout the play. Fugard uses symbolism as a way to explore racial tensions. He uses
four key symbols to establish the themes of racism and division as well as hope, freedom and
harmony. These include the meaning of the segregated bench, the flying kite, the ballroom dancing
and the crippled father.
Hally s favorite memory as a young boy is flying a kite with Sam in the park. Flying the kite
symbolizes overcoming racial barriers between black and white people. Sam makes the kite for Hally
to help him overcome his sense of shame because of his father s drunkenness. The kite is made from
tomato box wood and brown paper, flour and water for glue. Two of [his] mother s old stocking for a
tail and pieces of string. (Fugard 29) At first Hally is suspicious and had no hopes for it [...] In fact
[he] was shit scared [they] were going to make fools of [themselves]. (Fugard 29) Taking the step to
be a white person who disagrees with racism takes a lot of determination and guts. In order for Hally
to treat Sam as an equal he has to rise above the shame. The kite represents black and white people
working together and being equal. They are flying the kite together, and while doing this they are on
the same level. It is also significant that the kite flies beautifully

Wal Mart is also doing strategic alliance to get hold of Chinese market. Even Wal Mart was planning
to acquire kopeyka in Russia for its entry to Russian market however it entry was stopped by X5
market leader of Russian retail by purchasing the company in $1.6 billion. We can say that acquisition
is good strategy for Carrefour in countries like China, Russia, India, or Brazil which have many cities
with population in millions or in market where it s difficult to get enter. However Carrefour was the
first international retailer in China so it focused on organic growth and kept it at 20% for 2008 but
keeping in mind the small acquisition as well. So we can say that Carrefour was quite successful in it
strategy of organic growth and acquisition. Wherever it has acquired companies it has achieved its
strategy of organic, sustainable growth, with fast return on investment and market leadership.
However there are many countries where Carrefour failed like Russia, South Korea, Japan, Slovakia,
and Czech Republic, Malaysia, Singapore etc There were many other factors which were cause of its
exit from those countries. Still Carrefour has sold it operations in that country to companies like
Tesco, E Led. We can assume that Carrefour could have it strategy to test new markets get

Milne, Winnie the Pooh. Winnie the pooh , also called pooh bear, is a fictional anthropomorphic teddy
bear created by English author A.A. Milne and tells the story about a bear and friends, who set out on
many adventures. The story of Winnie the pooh has influenced children?s literature, fantasy literature

the stories on the silly bear had seemed to have a great impact on children?s literature. The stories

Essay on Westward Expansion
Book Review Westward Expansion 1807 1880
THESIS:
After the War of 1812 much of America s attention turned to exploration and settlement of its territory
to the West, which had been greatly enlarged by the Louisiana Purchase.
SUMMARY:
Families of pioneers swept westward and founded new communities throughout what is now the
Midwest, and between 1816 and 1821, six new states were admitted to the Union.
The land boom was fed by encouragement from the federal government and the actions of land
speculators, who bought up large tracts of land in order to sell it in parcels to farmers at exorbitant
prices. These farmers did not mind high prices and high interest on loans due to the growing success
of American agricultural products. Most ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The canal and railroad systems, which grew up in the North, facilitated a much larger volume of trade
and manufacturing while reducing costs a great deal. Great cities sprang up throughout the North and
Northwest, bolstered by the improvement in transportation.
After the Midwest had been substantially developed, the national focus turned toward the far west.
The territory of Texas, controlled by the Spanish, was settled by Americans, who eventually undertook
the Texas Rebellion in efforts to win independence. When the United States admitted Texas to the
Union in 1845, the Mexican government was outraged, and from 1846 to 1848, the two nation s
squared off in the Mexican War. With a resounding victory, the United States gained control of Texas,
New Mexico, and California. The Oregon territory was annexed in 1846 as well, and the US
controlled the land all the way to the Pacific Ocean.
As the population of the West soared and the prospects of statehood for western territories appeared
clearer and clearer, the nation battled over the future of slavery in the West. This battle was one reason
for the Civil War, which slowed the acceleration of expansion. However, the last three decades of the
nineteenth century saw the return of accelerating expansion due to the successful struggle to contain
the Plains Indians in reservations, and the completion of the transcontinental railroad in 1869. By the

High School Is The Best Time Of My Life
My time throughout high school was the best time of my life, I wished I would have realized sooner
how terrible of a student I was. I look back and think how much harder I could have tried, things I
could have done different, and how it has changed me. I don t have a single regret, because not only
was it a lesson learned but it was humorous along the way. I was never the best person at studying, in
fact I was terrible at it. I am the biggest procrastinator, the phrase, due tomorrow, do tomorrow I know
all too well. I knew I would have an upcoming assignment due, a test to study for, and I would still
wait until the very last second to get it done it never failed. While the teacher was going around giving
points for homework I was still scrambling to get all of mine complete. I would always get the
question Corey, did you forget to do your homework? Last minute, scrambling to get it done? I didn t
realize until much later how important it is to limit yourself from distractions. One of the funniest
moments I can remember was an afternoon in my English class. I sat right beside of my best friend
Emily, sometimes I wonder how she done it, how she put up with me and my shenanigans. There wasn
t a time I wasn t asking her for answers to a test, or an assignment, or just talking while distracting her
at the same time. This one day in particular I was really out of it, my teacher was instructing and here I

Comparison Of The Classical Chinese Empires And The Roman...
Classical Chinese Empires Compared to Roman Empire
Classical Chinese Empires and the Roman Empire were massive Empires that both became some of
the most well known Empires in the world. The Romans were set out to conquer the lands of Europe
and take anyone out in their path. The Chinese Dynasties lasted for a 4,000 year span of many
Emperors like the Zhou Dynasty, Qin Dynasty and Han Dynasty. They both had a reason on why they
lasted so long, Rome were very serious for their army because when you got to the age of 7 you were
sent to an extensive army camp which you would stay until you are 18. China had their Innovation and
trade. For example the Han Dynasty were lucky enough to use the silk roads which got them tons of
silk to trade to other empires. The Qin Dynasty had some of the first modern roads so they can travel
with ease.
Classical Chinese Empires and the Roman Empire were both a big political power in their times.
Chinese governments had a centralized government, same with the Roman s. Both empires were very
scared of their dynasties spreading out. This happened to the Greek City State Athens, they were very
decentralized and Athens spread out to make new villages. This caused Athens to eventually fall
because they couldn t take the power of the Roman Empire. Both were very successful and they
accomplished many great achievements with the many leaders they both had. Innovation similarities
were very similar as well because both empires invented and carried

Essay on Zulu Religion
Zulu Religion
Religion in the broadest sense may be defined as man s attitude towards the unseen, and the earliest
forms of human thought furnish the clue from which must be traced the development of those great
systems of religion that have at different time periods been professed by certain groups of people. The
term religion must also include, not only beliefs in unseen spiritual agencies, but numerous customs,
superstitions, and myths which have usually been regarded by the people of the specific society or
community. As far as, Zulu religion goes, there are many different opinions about the origin and
historical content. Since many of the beliefs and traditions were passed orally, there are no written

This is not descriptive of Zulu concepts which, as the study will be showing, assume a very close and
intimate relationship and association with the lineage between the departed and their survivors (29).
Even though there are doubts about Zulu traditional religion, most studies appear to confirm the fact
that belief in a sky deity is and always has been central to Zulu religious thought. Unkulunkulu (the
old, old one) is the Creator of First Cause. If a Zulu is asked about the origin of man and the world, he
will say Unkulunkulu the Zulu people believe in a power which they call Heaven or The Lord of
Heaven (Krige 282). Other researchers argue that all the Bantu further have some conception,
generally rather vague, of a supreme power. . . The Zulu have a sky god. . . the Lord of Heaven
(Shapera 262). Quite clearly the existence of a Zulu belief in a sky deity is well established in the
literature on both the Zulu people in particular and African religions in general. The earliest period of
recorded contact between Zulu and European cultures gives some information about Zulu religious
beliefs. This evidence, however, is culturally bias because of the European stereotypes and
expectations. Nathaniel Isaacs, a European trader, visited Shaka, the Zulu king, and developed a
strong friendship with him. In gratitude for assistance in a battle against his enemies Shake made him
a minor chief,
eventually granting him a strip of land around the coast

What Is The Portrayal Of Women In Entertainment
Today s society has set no barriers whatsoever on the wrongful ideologies engrained in the people. In
the United States, the entertainment industry sends messages of excessive masculinity, degrading
women in a variety of ways as well as portraying homosexuality to our children. We have seen these
undignifying trends along with others slowly grow since the post World War 2 era. On top of this,
there has been no accountability set in place to the select people responsible for such demeaning
messages being sent through mediums like movies, television and magazines. The child, men and
women demographic in American entertainment has created a rift between what is known to be
acceptable and what simply crosses the line among the consumers of our society. We see the horrible
effects of the portrayal of women in entertainment in the way that they are castrated from having a
significantly imposing presence in society. According to Miss Representation, More than 70% of
women on TV are in their 20s and 30s... A male dominant system values women as child bearers so it
limits their value to the time that they are sexually and reproductively active and they become much
less valuable after that . In other words, as soon as women go past their physical peak of their
lifetimes, the majority of them are seen as washed up and not worth shining the light to. The further
disproportion of women in society in comparison to men is demonstrated in the diminishing manner
that women are

The, The Bark, And Birds Hell
Upon entering The Met museum, I was overwhelmed by the enormous sculptures and detailed
paintings that filled each gallery. Though there were many galleries, the one that captured my attention
and led to be the focus of my paper is the Max Beckmann gallery. Max Beckmann in New York sheds
light on his connection with New York City. The art gallery displayed fourteen works in which
Beckmann created during his time living in New York. The gallery included many different forms of
art works such as, self portraits, mythical, expressionist interiors, robust, colorful portraits, portraits of
women, performers, and landscapes. Of the fourteen works, the three that I will focus on in this paper
is the Self Portrait in Tuxedo, The Bark, and Birds Hell. Max Beckman was a German painter,
printmaker, craftsman, and sculptor. Beckmann enjoyed great success, receiving official honors and
awards. His success suddenly reached a turning point when Adolf Hitler came into power. Hitler
resented Modern Art, and led in the abolishment of Modern Art in Germany. Shortly after, Beckmann
was disliked by the Nazi Government and was often referred to as a Cultural Bolshevik . Cultural
Bolshevism was a term used by Nazi Germany to attack Modernist Movements in the arts. After

Basketball In The 1930 s
Basketball was first introduced in the late 1800 s. As the game evolved so did the developments of the
game as well. Some of the things that were developing were the rules of the game. These rules
included the basic rules that we see today such as traveling, double dribble, personal fouls and
technical fouls. Other things that were developing were players learning how to dribble and how to
shoot. Although there was no proper way to figure out a way to score a basket, players sought fit the
best way the best way they knew at the time. As time passed players of the sport often studied each

Increasing Number Of People From The Western...
An increasing number of people especially in the western industrialized countries of the world are
working longer hours than people did in the past few decades. As a result, less time is being spent on
activities such as family care or leisure, creating an imbalance of time spent between work and home
life. In Britain for example, prospects for a work life balance for many workers appear to be slipping
away; Britons work the longest number of hours in Europe and one in six work more than 60 hours a
week! (Crush, 2011). For employers and policy makers this trend is worrying, because of the potential

For example walking across a street should not be identified as work as it is merely completing a task
but doing household work although may not earn a living but can be defined as work! Hence work is a
compromise between two important aspects executing tasks and making a living but add that making a

that shapes the individual. Watson (2008) further explained that, what is not work can then be

solely for the purposes of enjoyment. It follows that work and leisure are in opposition. Parker (1982)

Utilitarianism, Deontology, And Virtue Ethics
Initially, my understanding of ethics was merely to determine what is right and wrong in certain
situations. Although, after learning about Utilitarianism, Deontology, and Virtue Ethics, I have
realized that certain characteristics of each play a role in determining what ethics truly are.
Utilitarianism characterizes the definition of ethics, by making all choices have the greatest positive
impact, while minimizing the risk. Deontology on the other hand would rather we not get involved
because there is never a justifiable means to an end. Finally, there is virtue ethics, which would have
us aspires to have certain characteristics that we hold above all others. Let s further expand on what
Utilitarianism means and how it affects ethics. Utilitarianism focuses on actions that will appeal to the
greater good, while causing the least amount of harm. When in respect too many superheroes, they
seem to have a mixed set of ethics. In White and Arp s Batman and Philosophy, they discuss why
Batman has decided not to kill the Joker, even though time after time the Joker has proven himself to
be a menace (2008, p.5 6). What it boils down to, is that Bruce doesn t want to stoop to the level of the
criminals he has sworn to protect the city from, which could be the answer of what a Deontologist
would say on this matter. On the other hand, a utilitarian would want to kill the Joker, as it would save
countless lives that would be in danger otherwise. This showcases how Batman could save

Jetstar Airbus A330 200 about to land at Sydney
In July 2007, Qantas acquired a 18% stake in Vietnam s Pacific Airlines, to increase to 30% by 2010.
The airline was relaunched on 23 May 2008 as Jetstar Pacific. On 1 August 2008 Jetstar announced
that it had signed an agreement with the Northern Territory Government to make Darwin International
Airport an international hub with plans for seven aircraft to be based in Darwin. Under the agreement
Jetstar would be required to base three aircraft at Darwin by June 2009, with a further four by June
2012, with the Territory Government to provide A$5 million to set up the hub and a further A$3
million for promotion of the new routes.[12] On 28 April 2009, Jetstar commenced daily direct
services from Auckland to Gold Coast and Sydney. On 10 June the same year Jetstar commenced
domestic New Zealand flights between Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Queenstown. Jetstar
replaced Jetconnect on these routes using Airbus A320 aircraft. From 1 February 2011, Jetstar started
its co operation with the oneworld alliance, allowing people booking an itinerary with a full oneworld
member to include a Jetstar flight in the itinerary. However, the flight must be sold via Jetstar s
corporate parent Qantas, under a QF flight number.[13] In August 2011 Jetstar s parent Qantas
announced that it will set up a new airline to be called Jetstar Japan,

Cezanne, Lowry and Landscapes Essay
Cezanne, Lowry and Landscapes
Cezanne
Paul Cezanne, who was the son of a wealthy banker, became a painter in the 1860s in Paris when he
quit his studies of Law. By 1874 he was painting landscapes in the Impressionist manner and had
some of his work included in their first exhibition held during that very same year. He painted in the
Impressionistic manner, but sheared off in a different direction to the main body of Impressionist
painters. The main body of Impressionist painters were concerned with the fleeting effects of light and
colour , and in order to capture the surface impression of that moment they had to work fluently and
quickly . s analysis was far more prolonged and pains taking; He spent so long

But as they dissolve into tonal marks we are still conscious of the reality of the scene, the way the road
twists out of sight past the rocks into a cool tree filled valley. His way of working is so explicit; as we
look at the surface of the picture we are aware of his every brushmark, and we can imagine his subtle
colour mixing and careful balancing of colour and tone. He used colour not to fill in outlines, but, as a
true colourist used it to create forms. He believed that colour and line were inseparable and interwove
them, applying one over the other in his work. His angled brush strokes set up a nervous sense of
agitation in his late works like Route
Tournante . This may be a combination of his irascible temperament with an ageing painter s
awareness of the need to realise his objectives while he still had time.

Persuasive Essay On Why Are Bees Necessary
One issue that nobody pays attention to is, bees. Most people believe that bees are killers and horrible
bugs, but what they don t know is that without bees, there are less and less food. Although they are
dangerous, they re no harm unless they feel harm. This world doesn t realize that without bees, there
won t be anymore foods from almonds to strawberries. Some possible solutions to this problem are
reducing the amount of pesticides, grow plants, buy local raw honey, protect pollinators, and
understand that bees aren t there to hurt you. The amount of pesticides you use, the amount of bees
you re killing. Although they make your plants and gardens very pretty, they have chemicals that are
dangerous. The chemicals and pest treatments you put on your lawn and garden can cause damage to
the honeybees systems (Queen of the Sun). All the plants should be natural without any chemicals in

The more nectar they suck, the more honey we receive, which is really good for us. Just planting
flowers in your garden, yard, or in a planter will help provide bees with forage (Queen of the Sun).
That s why you should buy local, raw honey. For your own personal health, strive to buy local, raw
honey that is from hives that are not treated by chemicals (Queen of the Sun). Don t just help the bees,
but also help yourself. If you protect pollinators, then you would be saving so many bees. A pollinator
is the biotic agent that moves pollen from the male anthers of flower to the female stigma of a flower
to accomplish fertilization or syngamy of the female gametes in the ovule of the flower by the male
gametes from the pollen grain (Wikipedia). The pollinators are the ones that provide nectar for bees.
Lastly, bees are there to make food, not to hurt you. As I said, bees only cause damage when they feel
danger. When bees use their stinger, they end up dying. Be aware when you see a bee next

Firewall Essay
TABLE OF CONTENT
ABSTRACT/SYNOPSIS
A firewall is a product that sets up a security border whose primary undertaking is to piece or limit
both approaching and active data over a system. These firewalls are fundamentally not compelling and
suitable for professional workplaces to keep up security of data while it bolsters the free trade of
perspectives. In this paper, i think about system firewall that helps the professional workplace and
alternate systems that need to trade data over the system. A firewall ensures the stream of activity over
web and is less prohibitive of outward and internal data and furthermore give inward client the fantasy
of unknown FTP and www availability to web.

It ensures protection by standing amongst system and the outside world. The information move in any
direction must go through the firewall.
3.0 TYPES OF FIREWALLS :
There are various types of technique which might be executed by a firewall. Some of them are as per
the following:
Packet channel
Application gateway
Circuit level gateway
Proxy server
3.1 PACKET FILTER:
It focuses at one packet at once and after that it applies some set of guidelines to every packet and
afterwards it chooses to either forward the packet or dispose the packet. The standards depend on
various fields in the IP and TCP/UDP headers i.e. Source and destination address, IP protocol field,
TCP/UDP port number.
Attackers can break the security with the assistance of following techniques:
IP ADDRESS SPOOFING : In this kind of attack, attackers send a packet to inside network, by setting
source
IP address equals to IP address of inside client.
SOURCE ROUTING ATTACKS: Here attackers determine the route that is trailed by the packet to
move along the web with the goal that packet filter can be tricked to sidestep its normal checks.
Solution: The solution of this attack is disposed of all packets that use this alternative.
Advantages:
It is Simple to execute.
Low hardware cost, shabby boxes can do packet filtering.
Rules set are less complex.
3.2 APPLICATION GATEWAYS
With a specific end goal to control dangers when internal server permits connections

Essay on Federal Disaster Planning and Relief
This paper will discuss information on the federal disaster planning and relief program, and explain
how the program raises issues of federalism, and the pros and cons from two perspectives. Disaster
planning is the development and documenting of a plan that will allow an organization to recover
from a catastrophic event. It should include procedures that are appropriate to the function and size of
the business (Bucki, J.) As where disaster relief is the services or monies available to individuals,
families, and communities who have suffered from some form of a catastrophic disaster such as:
Floods

How Disaster Planning and Relief Raise Issues of Federalism The American form of Federalism has
been argued as one of the main challenges to an effective response. For instance, conflicting goals
may create tension between different levels of government agencies, local authorities may be reluctant
to turn responsibilities over for dealing with the emergency to federal and state entities, and there may
be various degrees and forms of collaboration (Schneck, D. 2009). Issues with federalism surfaced
within several contexts in 2005, for instance, The REAL ID Act, federal requirements associated with
Temporary Aid to Needy Families reauthorization, the Terri Schiavo case, state and local government
opposition to the No Child Left behind Act, and senate confirmation hearings for Chief Justice John
Roberts and Justice Samuel Alito, and the delayed and poorly coordinated intergovernmental response
to Hurricane Katrina and Rita also generated debate in Congress, and among academics and the
general public as to the appropriate federal, state, and local roles in responding to emergencies
(Schneck, D. 2009). There has also been occasions where issues of federalism have crossed paths in
article form with emergency management and

Like Water For Chocolate And John Steinbeck s The Grapes...
In Laura Esquivel s Like Water for Chocolate and John Steinbeck s The Grapes of Wrath, the female
characters are presented in nontraditional ways for the times in which the novels are set. Each novel
shows a clear distinction between the male and female characters, and it would make sense to feel a
feminist vibe from the authors at certain points in the novels. In these novels, the female characters
use the traditional distinction between gender roles to change the dynamics of their families and
function within the novel.
Before discussing the change from identifying the characters traits as female to relating their actions
more to a male identity, and vice versa, the relationships between the male and female characters must
be explored ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In contrast, the beginning of Like Water for Chocolate barely mentions men in leadership roles. Tita s
father, who remains unnamed throughout the novel, is dead. Because he is an unnamed dead man he
foreshadows the insignificance of the men in this novel. He is honestly better off dead than being
emasculated by Mama Elena, or even Tita later in the novel. The only other men mentioned in the first
chapter are Pedro and his father. Their encounter with Mama Elena was demeaning in itself. They
were denied Tita s hand in marriage and manipulated by Mama Elena into marrying Pedro and
Rosaura. Power in this novel is clearly, from the very beginning, in the hands of Mama Elena, a
woman. Will that power remain with her up until her death or does Tita, by staying in her place
cooking and nurturing, hold the power all along?
The structure of Like Water for Chocolate is permeated in feministic tendencies. The subtitle reads, A
Novel in Monthly Installments with Recipes, Romances, and Home Remedies. Does that not ring with
the familiarity of women s magazines from the 1800 s and early 1900 s like Godey s Lady s Book and
McCall s Magazine? Women would use these magazines to keep up with current fashion trends and to
connect and share ideas with women they otherwise would not know. Communication is a powerful
tool. Although, the women were sharing recipes, clothing patterns, and stories, they were still making
connections

Pro Forma Statement Using Budgets and Pro Forma Statements to Plan Funding: The pro forma statements and budgets were instrumental in determining what additional measures needed to be taken to ensure progress within the company. By reviewing the pro forma statements I was able to determine that I needed to raise the price of my product due to the fact that the target markets had indicated what they would pay for such product and the cost of production was over whelming the income received from sales. After the first quarter I was able to decide that changes needed to be made to not only the price of each product but additional products needed to be added to meet the needs of specific target areas. Lean operations emphasizes the understanding of the customer by producing units only as they are needed. As individual units are manufactured this reduces inventory drastically. This also would reduce any waste of products created and not sold. Both of these processes would have been a benefit to my company as there were several units of certain brands that were not desirable or meeting customer needs. This caused a loss of revenue by having units that were produced but not sold. The lean operations and Just In Time methods would eliminate this problem from the manufacturing side of my company. Work Cells Vs. Traditional Straight Line Method: By utilizing work cells in my manufacturing facility I would have been able to reduce travel distance in production due to the fact that all equipment in work cells is modular. This allows the work cells to be easily arranged or moved as needed. The implementation of work cells versus straight line manufacturing would have been beneficial also because it provides an organized workplace and reduced space for inventory or production materials. Also by using the work cell method of production defects would be easily detected early, this is because with work cells products are tested at the end of each production cycle making it easier to detect and fix any defects that may arise. The main key elements that are present in many Byronic heroes is their sense of darkness and social exile, the struggle for acceptance not only from themselves but also from society, and finally internal traumas that were caused from past events. One of the modern characters that immortalizes the Byronic hero is DC Comics, Batman. He does this by starting many failed relationships that turned sour such as those with Poison Ivy and Catwoman, to name a few. These are illustrative of the pessimistic demeanor that Batman has towards the outside because of what he has seen firsthand, and how he reacted to it. Lastly, Bruce Wayne uses his massive wealth and intelligence to build gadgets, utilities, and tools all in an effort to stop villains most of whom are not mortal. We have to realize that Batman is still a mortal man, and can be killed if due so. Therefore, not only does he have the intelligence to build whatever to defeat his foes, but he also has the cunningness to defeat them as well. • 4. Catholic Culture In the monograph entitled, Architects of Catholic Culture, Thomas Cook (2011) notes that there is a configuration of core beliefs and values that distinguish Catholicism from other Christian denominations. (p. 17). Among these beliefs is the attitude that community strengthens the individual s relationship with Jesus, and as such, it is an integral part of faith formation. Additionally, Gospel values inform the catechesis of elementary schools, which frequently include faith, service, courage, and social justice, among others. Significantly, faith is not static or unchanging. Faith must be known, celebrated, lived, and expressed in prayer. (United States Conference of Catholic, 2005). Therefore, effective catechesis relies on six elements that are fundamental to faith formation. Each element is an essential component. Initially, knowledge of the faith is acquired through an understanding of the scriptures as well as an understanding of church traditions. Additionally, an understanding of the liturgy and the sacraments is gained by participating in the Mass and in the reception of the sacraments. Further, moral formation is based on an understanding of Christ s moral message. Next, and fundamental to the Catholic identity is teaching students to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 5. The Conscript Wilfrid Wilson Gibson Analysis Wilfrid Wilson Gibson was a British Georgian poet and a lot of his work gets associated with World War 1. The poet s work originally started out as magical story telling; then abandoned that style for a more honest, realistic style to life. Not life for the upper class, but for the low level workingman. The switch to talking about the life of the working class made his work more real; his war poems were told through the view of the common soldier. His switch in his poetry theme was not pleasing to everyone though. A conscript is compulsory enlistment for state services, specifically armed forces. The Conscript is about how working class men, the conscripts, are being examined by doctors to see if they are in the proper conditions to go to war or be sent home. The doctors do not care if the men die instantly when they go to war. In The Conscript, Wilfrid Wilson Gibson develops the theme of the predestined death for the common man. The poet does this by ... Nevertheless, whether in Judah or Babylon, Ezekiel continued to prophesize to the Judeans, before and after the exile of the remaining Hebrews. Before the destruction of Jerusalem and the temple, Ezekiel prophesized about the total destruction of Jerusalem, brought on by the Judean s guilt. Ezekiel, at first, was a reluctant prophet. Unlike other prophets he was married, therefore had responsibilities to people other than himself. The symbolic scroll, mentioned in the second and third chapters of Ezekiel. But you mortal, hear what I say to you; do not be rebellious like the rebellious house; open your mouth and eat what I give you. I [Ezekiel] looked, and a hand was stretched out to me, and a written scroll was in it... (Cook 1187), was at first bitter but soon turned sweet. This was a metaphor for God s words, which Ezekiel was reluctant to speak, that in time became easier to swallow. Ezekiel after this point became the watcher of the house of Israel, responsible for their survival (Howe 204). Bone Cancer Exploring the Symptoms, Treatment, Prevention, and Statistics of Chondrosarcoma and Osteosarcoma Alexus Edwards Gabrielle Newton Ms. Knetter A1 Ronald Wilson Reagan College Preparatory IB High School Bone cancer is an uncommon disease that typically develops in the arm and leg bones (Mayo Clinic, 2015). Every year, there is an estimated 2,970 diagnoses made in the United States between all ages and genders (Cancer.net, 2014). The two most common types are osteosarcoma and chondrosarcoma, both of which share similar symptoms, treatment options, and survival rates. Bone cancer is defined as the uncontrolled growth of bone cells. The first recognizable symptoms are pain and tenderness in the bone. Other common signs include decreased mobility of a joint, fatigue, as well as anemia. Bone tumors are a clear indicator of bone cancer, however, they often go unnoticed until significant pain or injury has been acquired as a result. Apart from tumors, the symptoms of bone cancer are indecisive and can pertain to a number of medical conditions. This condition cannot be self diagnosed, but only determined through further inspection by a doctor. (Viswanatha, 2011). There are two types of bone tumors: benign (non cancerous and typically non threatening) and malignant (cancerous and requiring medical attention). Elizabeth I is one of the most portrayed monarchs in television, theatre and films, and polls have named her the best known and most admired English monarch . However, academic opinions fluctuate greatly1. The state of England the moment Elizabeth ascended to the throne was far from ideal, she had to face the consequences of her half brother and half sister s reigns and arguably did so. She reigned for 45 years, in times plagued by risk of invasion, inflation, rebellions, economic depression and religious discord among other difficulties. Her death was lamented by some and met with relieve by others. Owing to her illegitimate status and being the third in line to succeed the throne, it was highly unlikely that Elizabeth would ever become Queen of England.3 Nevertheless, she succeeded her sister Mary in 1558. Upon taking the reins, she found herself amidst a myriad of problems; from war with France to tension between religious factions. Recently, mergers were given a big thumbs down in a poll given to Americans and Canadians. The definition of a merger is a combination of two or more businesses to form a single firm. The cons of mergers greatly outnumber the pros because as companies get larger and larger, people lose jobs, monopolies form, and consumers pay higher prices, resulting in a less competitive and, therefore, less opportune business market. Great cities sprang up throughout the North and Northwest, bolstered by the improvement in transportation. After the Midwest had been substantially developed, the national focus turned toward the far west. The territory of Texas, controlled by the Spanish, was settled by Americans, who eventually undertook the Texas Rebellion in efforts to win independence. When the United States admitted Texas to the Union in 1845, the Mexican government was outraged, and from 1846 to 1848, the two nation s squared off in the Mexican War. With a resounding victory, the United States gained control of Texas, New Mexico, and California. The Oregon territory was annexed in 1846 as well, and the US controlled the land all the way to the Pacific Ocean. Even though there are doubts about Zulu traditional religion, most studies appear to confirm the fact that belief in a sky deity is and always has been central to Zulu religious thought. Unkulunkulu (the old, old one) is the Creator of First Cause. If a Zulu is asked about the origin of man and the world, he will say Unkulunkulu the Zulu people believe in a power which they call Heaven or The Lord of Heaven (Krige 282). Quite clearly the existence of a Zulu belief in a sky deity is well established in the literature on both the Zulu people in particular and African religions in general. • 48. Essay on Federal Disaster Planning and Relief This paper will discuss information on the federal disaster planning and relief program, and explain how the program raises issues of federalism, and the pros and cons from two perspectives. Disaster planning is the development and documenting of a plan that will allow an organization to recover from a catastrophic event. It should include procedures that are appropriate to the function and size of the business (Bucki, J.) As where disaster relief is the services or monies available to individuals, families, and communities who have suffered from some form of a catastrophic disaster such as: Floods Hurricanes Earthquakes Drought Tornadoes Riots (New World Encyclopedia) When these catastrophic disasters happen, an ... List of Catastrophic Disasters Hurricane Katrina Hurricane Rita 9/11 California Wildfires Midwest Floods How Disaster Planning and Relief Raise Issues of Federalism The American form of Federalism has been argued as one of the main challenges to an effective response. For instance, conflicting goals may create tension between different levels of government agencies, local authorities may be reluctant to turn responsibilities over for dealing with the emergency to federal and state entities, and there may be various degrees and forms of collaboration (Schneck, D. 2009). Issues with federalism surfaced within several contexts in 2005, for instance, The REAL ID Act, federal requirements associated with Temporary Aid to Needy Families reauthorization, the Terri Schiavo case, state and local government opposition to the No Child Left behind Act, and senate confirmation hearings for Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Samuel Alito, and the delayed and poorly coordinated intergovernmental response to Hurricane Katrina and Rita also generated debate in Congress, and among academics and the general public as to the appropriate federal, state, and local roles in responding to emergencies (Schneck, D. 2009). There has also been occasions where issues of federalism have crossed paths in article form with emergency management and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 49. Like Water For Chocolate And John Steinbeck s The Grapes... In Laura Esquivel s Like Water for Chocolate and John Steinbeck s The Grapes of Wrath, the female characters are presented in nontraditional ways for the times in which the novels are set. Each novel shows a clear distinction between the male and female characters, and it would make sense to feel a feminist vibe from the authors at certain points in the novels. In these novels, the female characters use the traditional distinction between gender roles to change the dynamics of their families and function within the novel. Before discussing the change from identifying the characters traits as female to relating their actions more to a male identity, and vice versa, the relationships between the male and female characters must be explored ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In contrast, the beginning of Like Water for Chocolate barely mentions men in leadership roles. Tita s father, who remains unnamed throughout the novel, is dead. Because he is an unnamed dead man he foreshadows the insignificance of the men in this novel. He is honestly better off dead than being emasculated by Mama Elena, or even Tita later in the novel. The only other men mentioned in the first chapter are Pedro and his father. Their encounter with Mama Elena was demeaning in itself. They were denied Tita s hand in marriage and manipulated by Mama Elena into marrying Pedro and Rosaura. Power in this novel is clearly, from the very beginning, in the hands of Mama Elena, a woman. Will that power remain with her up until her death or does Tita, by staying in her place cooking and nurturing, hold the power all along? The structure of Like Water for Chocolate is permeated in feministic tendencies. The subtitle reads, A Novel in Monthly Installments with Recipes, Romances, and Home Remedies. Does that not ring with the familiarity of women s magazines from the 1800 s and early 1900 s like Godey s Lady s Book and McCall s Magazine? Women would use these magazines to keep up with current fashion trends and to connect and share ideas with women they otherwise would not know. Communication is a powerful tool. Although, the women were sharing recipes, clothing patterns, and stories, they were still making connections ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
