The Emergence of Check Imaging Technologies and the...
P501 Operations Management
Spring 2013
Term Paper
The Emergence of Check Imaging Technologies and the Impacts of to Banks and Consumer and Small
Business Customers
Thanks in part to advancements in check imaging technology; financial institutions have an
opportunity to make major changes to outdated check processing systems. Bank executives are
weighing the benefits with the potential risks of updating a system that has been virtually untouched
since the 1970 s.
These emerging imaging technologies have the potential to remove the high transportations costs
associated with transporting physical checks and reduce the flow time (float) it takes between check
deposit and funds availability.

Lastly, all of these shortcomings to the conventional system prolong the time it takes for a customer to
deposit a check and receive the funds. Ultimately, any process improvements must create a positive
customer experience and reduce added exposure to both the customer and the banks.
A Closer Look At Check Imaging Truncation
With advancements in check imaging capabilities and Check 21 legislation (allowing for banks to us a
duplicate image of a check in lieu of the physical check), banks now have the opportunity to address
the process pain points that have plagued its check processing systems for years. For this analysis, the
focus will be on the various check processing imaging solutions that can optimize the conventional
check processing system. While the ACH system can be considered a bottleneck for some banks, there
have been made incremental improvements over time. Further, the ACH system improvements
requires the cooperation and partnership with the Federal Reserve and the governing body for electric
payments, The Electronic Payments Association.
Check imaging technology is a popular solution among financial institutions because each bank can
apply the technologies differently to fit its current systems. Check imaging is the process of making a
digital image of the check and using that image to

What Is The Relationship Between Of Mice And Men
Of Mice and Men, is a world famous novel which was written by John Steinbeck back in 1937. The
novel is mainly about George and Lennie and their life. But I am not going to write about that. I am
mainly going to focus on the characters which live on the ranch in the book (Crooks, Candy, Curley
and Slim).
These are the characters which work on the ranch:
Crooks takes care of the horses on the ranch. He has quite the history with those animals, the reason
why he is called Crooks is that a horse kicked him and that left him with a crooked back.
Crooks is the only black man on the ranch, therefore he lives alone in his own place in the barn with
the animals. Candy is in a similar position to Crooks, they are both rejected by the ranch hands,

Family In The Count Of Monte Cristo
In the film The Count of Monte Cristo, based on the novel of the same name by Alexander Dumas, the
idea of family serves as serious matter that is capable of dictating the allegiances and motivations for
the primary characters of the film. Furthermore, the idea of family is also depicted in the film, as a
liability for the characters and a vulnerability that others in the film exploit. Within this examples can
be seen in Villefort s action of imprisoning Edmond to protect his father, Albert s change of heart
when it is revealed that Edmond is his father, and the class discrimination that Edmond encounters
prior to his imprisonment. Edmond s imprisonment at the hands of Villefort is a defining moment of
the film and is one motivated entirely by Villefort s filial ties. During this scene, Edmond shows
evidence of a Bonapartist conspiracy through a letter given to him by Napoleon Bonaparte. Initially,
Villefort realizes Edmond s innocence, but upon inspecting the letter it is revealed to him that the its
contents incriminate his father. When this is revealed to him, Villefort burns the letter and imprisons
Edmond for life in order to silence him. Through this, it is seen that the idea of family is capable of
drastically altering the goals of characters, as Villefort immediately realizes that he must destroy ...

It is this type of weakness that causes characters to encounter lapses in judgement, often succumbing
to jealousy or injustice. Furthermore, it is the idea of family that forms the social class of character,
those above him or her and the various privileges or penalties that they receive in life. The film
realizes this and expresses it by having those of nobler origin, Villefort and Mondego, attempting to
exploit the family ties of the lowborn, Edmond Dantes, but ultimately face

James Lincoln Collier Anxiety Challenge By Another Name
Anxiety is experienced by most people on a daily basis. Many times, anxiety can prevent people from
accomplishing amazing tasks in their life. In some cases, people who avoid the anxiety end up
experiencing some sort of sadness. In a short essay, called Anxiety: Challenge by Another Name by
James Lincoln Collier, the author explains what causes these anxieties, and how to overcome them.
Overall, the essay is extremely relatable to many readers, including myself. Collier does a wonderful
job at relating his point to his readers. The explanation of the anxiety and depression that he had
experienced was descriptive. Also, the explanation was easy to picture and feel in my mind. I mostly
agree with Collier, because people can overcome their

Criteria for Evaluating Media Violence Essay
No Universal Criteria for Evaluating Media Violence
In a famous speech in 1995, Bob Dole, in an effort to gain more conservative support for his
impending Republican Presidential Nomination, unleashed a damning indictment of the movie
industry, seemingly unprovoked and somewhat puzzling. (Lacayo) Dole s speech and especially the
rebuttals to it raise many questions central to the debate over violence in film: is violence destructive
to impressionable viewers, is violence critical to the success of the industry, does violence have
aesthetic value, who decides what is violent, and if something is found to be violent, should it be
banned? By going beyond Dole s speech to carefully examine these questions, it is found that ... Show
more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Taking this into account, it is no coincidence that Dole selected The Lion King, Forrest Gump, and
True Lies, all huge money earners, as his films that represent exemplary family films. (Lacayo)
Viewed purely as an industry, violent content is vital to the success of current feature films; tobacco
and alcohol companies produce and sell products that are proven to have negative effects, yet are
allowed to continue selling. There is no concrete evidence regarding the effects of violent content in
film, so how could an entire industry be penalized for speculation. However, to view this situation in
terms of money only would seem cold hearted, so other variables must be taken into account.
One such variable would be the question of whether film violence has actual aesthetic value,
specifically if it has artistic worth. One would be hard pressed to argue that violence is not
entertainment, the high grosses and popularity these films generate disprove that theory at it s core, at
least from the standpoint of the public. Why do people watch scenes of extreme violence if not to be
entertained? Perhaps people watch violence for it s cathartic value, releasing emotion in a healthy
manner by allowing the characters onscreen to act out their personal, as well as the audience s
emotions. Or possibly, people watch for the stimuli they receive by watching such hyper kinetic
action. Maybe people watch to admire the stunts and special effects

Influence Of English Culture In The Industrial Revolution
English Culture Throughout the Industrial Revolution With a booming population of nine million,
nineteenth century England experienced intense growing pains. The Industrial Revolution would not
only provide jobs for the vast population and change the economy, but would birth a divided culture
between the wealthy and poor. The injustices present in Victorian culture would inspire literary works
and authors like Elizabeth Gaskell, who would be moved to write novels based on working conditions.
Also during this time period, many new acts would be approved by the constitutional monarchy that
would slowly repair the split culture. Through the years of 1811 to 1884, inspired by its constitutional
monarchy, English culture was evinced in the literary work of Elizabeth Gaskell. During the time,
England had established a constitutional monarchy. A constitutional monarchy is a political system in
which a monarch acts as an official of a sovereign state with finite powers limited by a written (i.e.,
codified), unwritten (i.e., uncodified) or blended constitution (Edgecombe par. 1). The monarch is the
Head of State and is to make and pass legislation ( The Role of the Monarchy par. 1). This political
system also included a governing party to coincide with the monarch. This body limited the monarch s
power by the process of approving laws, taxes, reforms, and acts; each law, tax, reform, and act which
needed to be ratified by the governing party, therefore representing a

Allende and the Weavers of Revolution
In Peter Winn s Weavers of Revolution, a factory in Santiago, Chile fights for their independence
against the Chilean government of the 1970 s. While this rebellion is going on, presidential elections
are taking place and Salvador Allende is the presidential candidate which represents the common
people. The relation between Allende and the people he represents is a unique one because at first this
class, the working class, helps and supports Allende to become president, but then both parties realize
their different plans for the future and the working class actually contributes to the downfall of
Allende s presidency. At first, the working class heavily supported ... Show more content on

Once Allende becomes elected, the two revolutions which were supposed to compliment each other
actually start to work against each other. The first type of revolution is the revolution from below ,
which is characteristic of the workers in the Yarur rebelling against the Chilean government. The other
type is the revolution from above , this was the revolution common of the higher class like Allende
working towards workers rights. At first, the workers think that their revolution from below was only
helping Allende s revolution from above. The workers did things like form unions for the first time, or
were even so bold to strike against the mill in order to gain complete control over it. Strikes had
happened before which were about things like wages or unions, but this was different for the fact that
they wanted total control of the mill. Allende was forced to give the workers the power to control the
mill. This is just one of the examples of how the revolution from below sometimes coincided with or
complemented, but increasingly diverged from, the legalistic and modulated revolution from above
(141). For the most part in fact, the strategies of Allende were disrupted by the revolution from below
because of their need for extreme immediate progress. This was frustrating for Allende and his cabinet
because they were constantly at the demand of the working class they falsely claimed to know and
represent. Local events in Chile from the lower class

Linear Programming
The development of linear programming has been ranked among the most important scientific
advances of the mid 20th century. Its impact since the 1950 s has been extraordinary. Today it is a
standard tool used by some companies (around 56%) of even moderate size. Linear programming uses
a mathematical model to describe the problem of concern. Linear programming involves the planning
of activities to obtain an optimal result, i.e., a result that reaches the specified goal best (according to
the mathematical model) among all feasible alternatives.
Linear Programming as seen by various reports by many companies has saved them thousands to even
millions of dollars. Since this is true why isn t everyone using Linear Programming? Maybe the ...

I believe that every company should be using LP and I have hypothesized that linear programming
increases both EPS, ROI and by definition Profit. This research therefore assumes that a company not
using LP would have made less money than one that did use LP. The sample is 28 companies and I felt
this would be sufficient as a sample size as statisticians typically recommend a minimum of 20 data
points (in this case companies) in order to test a hypothesis. The companies are located in and near the
state of Delaware and also include New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
This research is not exhaustive and therefore will not be final in terms of how it is interpreted but it
will assist others who wish to use much larger samples and over much longer periods of time to refine
the results and potentially prove that LP does have a consistent improvement effect on a company s
profits, ROI and EPS measures of performance. Method
I used the survey research method as the basis of my research design. Calls were made to each
company that was randomly selected and for whom their results were collected. Each company was

were unsure of which department was meant, we would then ask Can we speak to the key people

Airlines Industry is large and growing, it is also the most fiercely competitive sector. It facilitates
international trade, world economy growth, tourism and international investment. The airline industry
has over time with the use of modern technology been able to take advantage of the short haul, high
frequency and gained a competitive advantage over other forms of travel, such as buses and railroad
travel. Additionally, the airline industry still holds the market for global travel at a low cost and
convenient way to travel. The aviation industry gives a good contribution to the GDP which includes

2. Porter s Five Forces Analysis
It analyses the micro environment of the business i.e. its competitiveness, attractiveness and

a. Emirates Supplier Power
The supplier power in airlines is dominated by the world s two largest aircraft manufacturers are
Airbus and Boeing. The competition between the two manufacturers is neck to neck but that would
prove to be a boon for Emirates as the prices would not rocket through the ceiling. A study shows that
Emirates holds 93 Boeing aircrafts and 83 Airbus units (Planespotters, 2009). In 2007, Emirates
purchased 81 Airbus flights, to extend it services however, they chose Airbus over Boeing as the latter
failed to deliver its latest aircrafts on time and moreover, Airbus had quoted a good price (Barryl,
2007). The changing oil prices also have an adverse effect on the aviation industry. In a nutshell, the
bargaining power of suppliers is high. Buyer Power
There are 2 direct flights from Dubai to Hong Kong weekly, rest are 35 are via flights. Fares vary
according to demand, but Emirates not being a budget airline its buyers do not really influence the
price. Further more, a Travel Survey concluded that above 60% of the travellers preferred Emirates
Airlines to any other international Airlines (Glass, 2008).
However, one could opt for an indirect flight if tariffs are concerned or if they wish a stop

The Clarity Of Scripture Analysis
Imagine yourself in a blustery sea with every human being in the world. Everyone is drowning, and
the only source of life is on a ship where the captain lives. Insistently, the captain throws out life rings,
but people, in the mist of their drowning, refuse and rebuke him. As ridiculous as this may sound, this
is how the fallen world today responds to the message of the most influential book written, the Bible.
As time passes, people pass, but God s words will not pass away (Luke 21:33). His words are the
greatest literature ever written. They are read by more people, quoted by more authors, translated into
more tongues, represented in more art, are set to more music than any other book or books written by
any man in any century in any land... because they are the greatest words ever spoken ... Show more

This means that the Bible is ONLY understood by those that are seeking God s help and willing to
follow it (Wayne Grudem). Those who do not have the work of the Holy Spirit in them will not see the
truthfulness of Scripture. Psalm 119:130 says, The unfolding of your words gives light; it imparts
understanding to the simple. In addition, 2 Peter 3:16 also goes on to state that there are some things in
them (the epistles) that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own
destruction. Like Jesus disciples did, we will sometimes misunderstand Scripture, but we should not
believe the error is in the Bible, but with the interpretations we have made, because Christ s ways are
higher than ours ways and his thoughts than our thoughts (Isaiah 55:9). However, God provides us
with scholars to make clear the errors in interpretations and to defend the Bible from false teachings
and interpretations. The clarity of Scripture also shows that if we do not respond to Gods truth all
ungodliness and unrighteousness of men... will suppress the truth (Romans

Why Plagiarism Is Bad
Getting (Re)acquainted with Plagiarism and Citations
Through my college experience and earlier decision to pursue a degree in Biology, I have written
many scientific papers as a result of my degree choice. Along my pursuit of a degree, I have learned
the seriousness of plagiarism, which was instilled upon me by the professors requiring written papers
from their students. Despite the emphasis professors make about the intolerable act of plagiarizing
throughout all colleges, there is still the issue of students falsely claiming work as their own. Donald
L. McCabe, a business professor at Rutgers University, surveyed 14,000 undergraduate students from
2006 2010 to see what percentage of students would admit to have plagiarized/cheated on homework

My plan to dodge plagiarism is to: outline my thoughts before starting the writing process, revisit rules
of citations frequently, use other people s ideas in moderation, use print sources to reference more than
Internet sources, and take advantage of plagiarism avoidance technology. The advantage of outlining
my thoughts before I begin writing is that it will help decipher my individual ideas from someone else
s. Keeping up with the rules of correctly citing sources is important and understanding all the rules
will help me avoid the types of plagiarism that are less obvious like unintentional plagiarism and self
plagiarism. When beginning the writing process, if I rely on someone else s ideas more than my own I
am more likely to plagiarize, even if it is unintentional, than if I use other people s ideas only to
further support my own. By using printed sources such as books or magazines in exchange for Internet
sources will make it less likely for me to copy and paste someone s ideas as suggested by Sarah
Brookover who is a senior at the Rutgers University (1). Lastly, taking advantage of the advances in
technology by using anti plagiarism websites such as plagiarismchecker.net, turnitin.com, and

In the book, Justice What s The Right To Do by Michael Sandel. Michael Sandel brings up the free
market and asks those reading whether or not the free market is fair. He asks if we should be able to
sell anything we have on our body to sell, or that we shouldn t due to moral reasons such as selling
body parts, or sex. Why is it that donating a kidney is looked at with with praise while some argue
selling your kidney is seen as morally wrong, Is selling body parts or even sex for payment unethical
or ethical, at what point do we cross the line between immoral and moral. I agree, though with some
reservations. For instance only allow the selling of certain body parts if the body is born with a pair of
it for instance kidneys. Both kidneys are healthy and you can spare one without damaging your own
health. Even liver transplants won t damage your health as the liver heals fairly quickly and leaves
nothing but a scar, bone marrow transplants are also safe since bone marrow and liver are
regenerative. Selling of body parts would need to be heavily regulated to protect the health of the

The Effects Of Pornography On Men And Women
The following speech focuses on how prolonged exposure to porn affects men and women, more
specifically how it affects the hypothalamus in the male brain. Men watch more porn than woman so I
first hypothesized that this difference in viewing weakens the hypothalamus and in turn leads to
desensitization with the act of natural sex. I then found scholarly sources to support my overall claims.
This speech will cover the following points: 1.) How Pornography desensitizes the male brain. 2.)
How pornography causes its viewers to replicate porn style relationships in own life, leading to lack of
intimacy. (Detachment from reality) 3.) The effects of pornography have on women 4.) How
pornography promotes the objectification of women. These very small variables play a huge role in
weakening the male brain. In addition, I will briefly touch on why woman aren t effected from an over
exposure in the same manner as their male counter parts. The overall aim of this paper is to reveal how
this phenomenon effects males and why they should take immediate action to not become a statistic.
Why men shouldn t watch too much porn.
A. One can infer that most men view or have viewed pornography at some point in their life.

I used to play so I understand the game and have a strong passion for it. My career goal is to try and

Essay on Ernest Hemingway s For Whom the Bell Tolls
In Hemingway s For Whom the Bell Tolls, the recurring images of the horse and the airplane illustrate
one of the major themes of the novel. The novel s predominant theme is the disintegration of the
chivalric order of the Old Spanish World, as it is being replaced by the newer technology and ideology
of the modern world. As a consummate artist, Hemingway, in a manner illustrating the gothic quality
of his work, allows the bigger themes of For Whom the Bell Tolls to be echoed in the smaller units.
He employs the tropes of the horse and the airplane to convey these larger themes, while at the same
time using them to comment upon the complex relationship that exists between the Spaniards Fascists
and Communists, alike and religion. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They have abandoned religion, as they have become disillusioned by it, and, therefore, have no
mechanism for atonement. Stemming from their close attachment to the chivalric ideal of equality in
battles, the Spanish have absolutely no conception of modern warfare, until the planes begin invading
their land. They view war as a match of equals, wherein a lone soldier can look his enemy in the eye
as they battle, but, instead, they are forced to come to grips with the horrors of modern warfare.
The planes are representative of the modern mechanical accomplishments that have emerged, which
can replace the chivalric, soldier of the Old World. With the emergence of such technologies, and the
influx of new ideologies, not only has the religion, once integral to chivalry, become obsolete, but the
people, too, have become dispensable. Gone forever is the almost sacred element of one on one
battles; the planes have eradicated these chivalric ideals, by replacing them with a brand of never
before seen mass destruction. In effect, the new ideologies have become the new religion; they have
replaced the Church, just as the new mechanisms, such as planes, and mass warfare have replaced the
chivalric ideals of the medieval world.
The meaning of the horse and airplane images can be illuminated through an exploration of Chapter
27, which conveys, without a doubt, their significance. One of the very first

Columbus Day ? Well, as stated earlier, it was named after Christopher Columbus, who as we believe
today, discovered America. Many believe that it was him who founded the Americas, but really there
could ve been earlier settlers or even Native Americans who lived on those territories before
Columbus made his way there. What is a pro of having this day named after Columbus? A source I
found called www.scholastic.com stated, The holiday honoring Christopher Columbus s sighting of
America on October 12, 1492, is observed in the states of the United States and also in parts of
Canada, in Puerto Rico, and in some cities in Italy and Spain. Although Columbus was not the first
explorer to set foot in the Western Hemisphere, his landing at San Salvador Island in what is now the
Bahamas was very important. It opened the way for the settlement of America by Europeans. So,
basically we named this holiday after Columbus because it was assumed that he was one of the first to
see and discover the Americas. Another source titled www.osia.org stated Columbus Day celebrates
the beginning of cultural exchange between America and Europe. After Columbus, came millions of
European immigrants who brought their art, music, science, medicine, philosophy and religious
principles to America. From one s point of view, it may look like Columbus did many great things that
led to the development of America. But no one really knows what was at stake because of Columbus
decisions. A con relating to the naming of Columbus Day is in a

Commodification Of Halloween
With the increase in reinterpretations of death and Halloween symbols, two fundamental things
occurred, the mass commodification of Halloween and a decontextualization of the symbols of death.
In 1978 the premiere of Halloween, directed by John Carpenter, directly placed the holiday itself in
relation to horror and gruesome death, more so than the introduction of gothic horror ever did (Rogers
110; Khapaeva 58). The introduction of explicit horror, according to Rogers, created. a coded
language that enables authors and invites their audiences to explore their fears, hidden desires, and
anxieties (110). This established a creative space in which fantasy and dissociation could be merged
creating a popularization of death without actually dealing with the reality of death itself. It created a
space where the narrative of horror and death could be controlled and regulated, through established
archetypes. This directly contrasted the collective psyche of the 1970s and 80s in the United States,
which was dealing with the ramifications of the AIDS epidemic (the worst epidemic since Polio), and
an increase in social, religious, and political conservatism (Khapaeva 78). Through horror movies and
Halloween, social anxieties could be dealt with in an a political and creative way, while still
maintaining the sanitized separation of hospital and culture.
In the contemporary period, Halloween s popularity has increased. Personal expenditures on
Halloween have drastically increased since the 2000s, to create a multi billion dollar industry, which
has expanded the cultural awareness and practice of Halloween (Khapaeva 57). However, this
expansion has led to the commodification of Halloween, by equating it with consumer culture. This
has significant implications for the cultural conception of death as it equate previously potent symbols
with cheap goods. But this might have been by design, as Grider argues that the mass
commercialization of Halloween is another way in which collectively western culture can control the
potentially dangerous incursion of the supernatural world in our everyday lives (10). Through the
ownership of material goods associated with Halloween, the narrative and context of the concepts are

of disease. It involves ... health promotion, such as health education and a good standard of nutrition

immunizations and use of specific nutrients (Edelman et al., 2014 pg. 12). According to the case study,
Richard Renehart is a 62 year old Caucasian male who weighs 252 pounds. He is overweight and has

American and Hispanic descent. She has hypertension and may also be suffering from depression and
diabetes. First of all, since type 2 diabetes is strongly associated with obesity, Richard and Theresa
both need to start making healthy choices regarding their diets. Theresa should stop skipping meals
and join her family for meals as this can also help improve her loneliness. She ought to eat more than
just soups. Both have to start eating healthy, and what this means is eating in smaller portions and
choosing healthy foods like whole grain foods such as whole wheat bread, brown rice, crackers,
oatmeal, cereals, and barley. Fewer high fat foods and more fruits and vegetables should be
incorporated into their diet. Meat can also be substituted with fish, turkey, or chicken without the skin.

Hades, an Influence on Greek Society
Greek gods, the basis of Greek culture and religion, are the center of Greeks superstitions and ways to
worship. These relate to the god s origin and their deeds in their myths. Gods can either show jealousy,
courage, or kindness to mortals and other gods, so Greeks label the gods based on their qualities. In
most circumstances, the Greeks decide whether to worship or despise a god only by whom or what
they rule over. For example, Greeks show reluctance in worshipping Hades, the Lord of the
Underworld. Greeks hold celebrations and festivities to earn favor from the gods. Greek gods can
either have a positive or a negative impact on Greek culture. Most people believe that Hades, an
important god in Greek culture, has a negative impact on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In other minor myths, Hades acts relenting and fair towards others. For example, after hearing
Orpheus pleas to save his wife, Eurydice, from the dead, Hades soft heart allowed him to do so.
Therefore, Hades does have a bit of kindness in his heart. He only presides over the dead and
maintains order. People focus only on Hades unlikeable qualities, and believe that Hades only has evil
in his mind and heart. However, he is fair and doesn t unnecessarily punish someone if they don t
deserve it. Gods and mortals show displeasure when confronted by Hades. Most Greek myths situate
him near to water at the edges of the earth, or the deepest depths of the underground. In this way, most
of Greek society ignore or try to avoid him. Hades doesn t get involved in Olympus festivities and
doesn t interfere in the normal world. Hades expresses reluctance to show his face in public. He leaves
the Underworld wearing a headgear that makes him invisible (Taylor). Rarely worshipped by humans,
Greek society believes Hades brings unluckiness to whoever speaks his name. Worshipping the God
of the Dead didn t sound good to most of Greek society. Worshippers of Hades, who went to Eleusis, a
temple, were outcasts and often shunned by the normal worshippers because they didn t conform to
the proper Greek culture. As a result, followers of Hades worship in secret, usually in obscure

How Did Jeremiah s Corrupt Kings
Jeremiah
Judah s corrupt kings
Jeremiah is commonly known as the weeping prophet because of his deep commitment to and
empathy and compassion for the people of Judah; to whom he was chosen to chastise. He was a
prophet during the reign of five kings including: Josiah, Jehoahaz, Jehoiakim, Jehoiachin, and
Zedekiah. King Josiah had brought about reform throughout Judah and Jerusalem, restoring the people
to proper worship of God. However, when the king died, subsequent kings returned to the corrupt
religious practices of: idolatry, child sacrifice, and worship of Baal and other false gods, which had
been established by previous kings. Although God had withheld his wrath during King Josiahs reign;
it would eventually fall upon Judah because of the sins and evil that the other kings had promoted.
Jeremiah s calling
When God first called Jeremiah, Jeremiah argued that he was too young to speak for God. However,
God reminded him of who had been in control of his life and future all along, Before you were born I
set you apart (Jeremiah 1:5). God charged Jeremiah with the purpose to deliver the ... Show more

alone in this world, to feel that God had forsaken him. Despite his attempts to change the trajectory of
their lives, he helplessly witnessed the people of Judah refuse to heed his warnings and continue in a
life of sin and moral corruption which led to their ultimate collapse and destruction. Yet, throughout
his ministry God offered Jeremiah nuggets of hope for the

Industrial Organizational Psychology
The medical profession is one of the most crucial professions in any country, including the United
States. As such, it is ideal to refine processes and practices in order to maximize the output of
employees within this profession. Although such an outcome is desired of any sort of organization that
industrial organizational psychologists work in, it is pivotal to achieve this objective in the medical
profession for the simple fact that the result of medical procedures directly affects the health and
vitality of the profession at large. Industrial organizational psychologists improve workplace
conditions for employees (No author, 2013). Thus, there is increased scrutiny on industrial
organizational psychologists and there work within the medical field which may account for the fact
that traditionally, there are very few I O psychologists working in health care settings (Ehler et al,
2003).
However, this traditional dearth of industrial organizational involvement in this industry only makes
that which has been documented all the more valuable. A recent research study on resuscitation for
children conducted at the University of Calgary illustrates how some medical organizations have used
industrial organizational psychology to train employees and influence future selection criteria for
them. During this particular study, employees involved in these procedures are trained in a single day
by filming their reactions to simulated resuscitation scenarios with children. Both the

The Complexity of Forest Fires Case in Indonesia: Exposure on Moral Dimension of the
Environmental Policy
I. Introduction and Problem Identification
Everyone is expected to do the right thing in a society that has a social awareness. The social
awareness includes moral behaviour, ethical behaviour and obey the rules. Forest and land fire is a
complex environmental problem in Indonesia. In the last 18 years since 1997/1998, forest and land
fires happen in every year in Indonesia. The problem is not only because of natural cause but also
human action cause. The human cause is from population growth that impacts to the increasing needs
of human life and pushes human action in utilizing nature intensively. Therefore as a consequence of
human action to the resource of consumption is a threatening to the sustainability of nature and to
human itself. Furthermore global climate change phenomenon as an impact of human action also has
caused El Nino and impacted to the length of drought season in Indonesia. As a tropical and an
archipelago country, Indonesia s weather condition is vulnerable because of climate change. Land and
forest area are easily burned and the fire are becoming out of control whenever drought season come.
Forest and land fire have caused significant economic losses, human health problem, and damage
environment and biodiversity in the area. It also increases tension between Indonesia and other

Analysis Of The One With Five Steaks And The Simpsons
The culture of America was transforming by the end of the twentieth century, and series like Seinfeld
and The Simpsons were transcending television through creative storylines and outstanding comedy.
In the year 1994, CNN introduced the new, hit sitcom Friends; the show followed six 20 to 30 year old
friends lives in Manhattan and captured an upcoming generation by storm. The idea of friends learning
to support one another through professional and private conflict appealed to the masses. Everyone
tuned in each Thursday night and became attached to one of the show s empathetic characters: insipid
Ross, irresolute Rachel, vacuous Joey, bubbly Phoebe, irritable Chandler, and imperious Monica. Its
popularity only grew through each new season as the actors and actresses developed from unknowns
into national television stars. The One with Five Steaks and an Eggplant in season two exemplifies the
show s ability to influence and reflect a country s culture through its emotional storylines, comedic
drama, and relatable characters.
In the episode, Ross s birthday is coming up, and the group is planning something special for the
event. They agree on a gift, cake, and tickets to the upcoming Hootie and the Blowfish concert. It will
cost each person sixty two dollars, but Rachel, Joey, and Phoebe each receive a lower income than the
other members of the group; the extravagant lifestyles of their friends begins to become an issue.

Fidel Castro, President Of Cuba
Fidel Castro, President of Cuba, was one of the inspiring forces of the Cuban Revolution. Guided by
the philosophies of his Jesuit education and experiences at his father s sugar plantation, Castro
developed a fundamentally strong view on an independent Cuba, identifying himself with the common
folk. On July 26th, Castro led the attack on the Moncada Barracks in order to take over enemy
transmitters. However, a lack of planning and poor miscommunication on Castro s side led to a severe
defeat, leading to Castro s capture. Although Castro let out on a technicality, President Batista chose to
publicize Castro s trial as well as his History Will Absolve Me speech. In his speech, Castro advocated
for reforms in the country s political structure advocating for establishment of the 1940 Constitution
and focusing on the collective society, not an individual force. Outlining the five laws needed to create
a revolution, Castro related to his fellow Cuban revolutionaries through various literary techniques
such as use of rhetoric and references to Cuba s agricultural history.
One of the underlying themes in Castro s speech was his ability to underscore that there was a
fundamental problem in Cuba s economy. In a time when the United States had recently come out of
its own economic recession and was industrializing, foreign threats severely undermined Cuba s
ability to gain economic autonomy. As Castro keenly pointed out, 85% of small farmers in Cuba pay

Technology is the best way to reduce the impact of an earthquake to what extent do you agree with
this view? (40 marks)
An earthquake is a sudden violent shaking of the ground, typically causing great destruction, as a
result of movements within the earth s crust or volcanic action. Impacts of an earthquake can include
short term impacts such as fatalities, or long term impacts such as income lost through lack of tourism.
Technology can be used to predict the likelihood of an earthquake occurring in a particular area, for
example by detecting plate movement, and this can reduce the impacts of an earthquake in return. This
essay will discuss whether technology is the best way to reduce the impact of an earthquake or not.

Tsunamis are usually caused by tectonic displacement of the ocean floor often resulting in an
underwater earthquake. This happened on Boxing Day in 2004 in the Indian Ocean where there was a
1000km thrust fault from a release of stress along the constructive destructive plate boundary. No
technology was in place to detect such a disaster and, although scientists knew a tsunami was likely to
hit Southern Asia, most of the warnings were too late and the first TV broadcasts in Thailand even
happened after the waves had hit. Up to 290,000 people were killed and thousands of bodies are still
missing to this day. Since this disaster, a tsunami warning system has been put in place in the Indian
Ocean and technology such as this is almost guaranteed to prevent such a high death toll for the future.
There is a strong argument that if such technology was implemented before 2004, then thousands of
lives could have been saved through evacuation and similar measures. Technology is the best way to
reduce the impacts of earthquakes because they can predict a upcoming earthquake, allowing residents
of an area time to evacuate to safe land, saving many lives. However, there are many other ways of
reducing the impacts of earthquakes and technology has its limitations.
The effectiveness of earthquake monitoring and warning systems are limited as many authorities
choose to ignore warning signs to avoid disruption to businesses and

Now with new technology, such as satellites systems, low altitude photography and side looking radar,
scientists can now figure that the world is losing about 20.4 million hectares of tropical forests
annually and if these figures are not reduced, we will lose all of our tropical forests in about 50 years.
It has been suggested that the high deforestation rates are caused partly by the fact that the new
surveys are more accurate and thus reveal old deforestation rates that have not been detected with
older methods.
At first there was concern only among foresters about deforestation but now the public has created
organizations such as Green Peace to help increase awareness and reduce deforestation. The Food and
Agriculture Organization or
F.A.O, has worked mainly within the forest community to find new and better ways to manage the
forests. Also, in 1985 there was the introduction of the Tropical

the World Bank, other development agencies, several tropical country governments, and several
government organizations. Together they developed a new strategy. More than 60 countries have
decided to prepare national forestry action plans to manage their forests.

Marxist Reading Of Frankenstein Essay
Frankenstein Mary Shelley s classic, Frankenstein, brought lenses and themes to the 17th century that
had never been explored previously. The novel has a couple constant themes, but can be interpreted
through many different lenses. Reader response, Feminist criticism, and Marxist Criticism were
common lenses to write with during the 17th century. Each lense has a different meaning depending
on the context in the book, as well as the individual reading the book. By using Marxist, Feminist, and
Reader response criticism, Shelly conveys different meanings in Frankenstein depending on the
reader.

Visual Perception and Visual Imagery Essay
If visual imagery and visual perception shared many of the same processes, then much of what is
known to date about perception may be used and adapted to be able to understand the more internal
and ambiguous process of visual imagery. The question is how much of mental imagery is actually a
part of visual perception? The concept of a unitary mechanism has been recurrently mentioned in the
text, although little has been said about what it means and implies. This is a term coined by Stephen
Kosslyn (2005), he provided a model of visual imagery in which a single visual buffer is used bottom
up to display visual percepts and top down to display internally generated images. The main claim is
that the brain areas that implement the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another type of research is single case studies in which double dissociations have gravely challenged
the model, such cases involve patients in which imagery was impaired and perception was speared and
vice versa (Shallice, 1988). Although measures of haemodynamic activity and brain lesion studies
provide some insightful information on the issue, other behavioural data is necessary to understand
whether visual imagery is processed in the same way as perception. Finke and Pinker (1982) used
reaction times as a mental tape measure in which participants were required to look at an array of dots,
once the dots disappeared and an arrow appeared, participants were requested to indicate whether the
arrow was pointing at a previous dot or not. If the distance of the arrow was increased than the
reaction time was expected to increase while one imagines scanning the image. This final research
begs for the question, would eye movements show the same pattern of scanning ? If visual perception
and visual imagery have so much in common, than we might expect that the eye sequences present in
visual perception will also be present and similar in visual imagery. There is strong evidence that this
is in fact true, several studies show that spontaneous eye movements occur during visual imagery and
in most of the studies the movements reflect the content and spatial relations of the originally
perceived object. In a study by Brandt and Stark (1997) the

Cultural Capital As An Agent Of Change Essay
When examining a family s history it is obvious that the many children have ended up with the same
level of education as their parents and ancestors. Children whose parents received tertiary level
education normally obtain a qualification from tertiary level education as well. This idea was first
questioned by Pierre Bourdieu who introduced the concept of cultural capital. Cultural capital is the
skills that a person can use to their advantage in a social situation, especially in education. While
observing a classroom children were being dismissed because they did not speak the language, their
low cultural capital impacted their learning immensely; however, in another classroom I observed the
teacher being an agent of change. Striving to include every child in the lesson depict the diverse range
of cultural capital present. These two different situations impacted when the child was present, how
the children participated in class and their overall achievement.
Cultural capital is the ideas and knowledge that people draw upon and use as an asset in social
situations. As Lamont Lareau state the idea of cultural capital was introduced in the 1960s by Pierre
Bourdieu, a French sociologist, anthropologist and philosopher. The concept was originally designed
to explain why children from certain backgrounds would often repeat their family history in education
(Lamont Lareau). Bourdieu tried to explain the social inequalities in education in during the 1960s in
France. Children

The Social Consequences of Communication Technologies Essay
The Social Consequences of Communication Technologies
How many hours have you spent on American Online Instant Messenger when you should have been
studying for prelims? Communications shapes our modern society as well as brings many burdens and
negative aspects along with it. It does not seem like it is even able to help most of the population of a
developing country because most of the people in that country do not have access to modern
communications technologies. Current telecommunications technology has enlarged our social lives
decreasing our productive time, increased the rate of spreading of negative ideals, and amplified our
dependence while diminishing our independence.
Telecommunications seem ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The modern technology for telecommunications has made the general public increasingly lazy and
dependent on such things as the Internet, the phone, and Instant messenger. The pre
telecommunications societies had so much more productive time when considering the amount of time
spent on useless modern communications. The more time people spend using the Internet ... the more
they lose contact with their social environment. (Stanford) Of course the telephone and Internet do
sometimes provide useful information; however, compared to the hours spent surfing the web and
socializing, the actual amount of productive time spent is relatively small. Telecommunications
technologies have also made the modern society very lazy. Societies without telecommunications have
constant interactions; their children play with each other, discover and learn together. In the modern,
developed countries, people no longer interact face to face as frequently, the children spend hours
conversing on the phone, chatting on the internet, or just sitting in front of the computer playing video
games. Bringing the world together through a network of wires seems less appealing when
considering what it takes from us.
Ideas are spread much quicker now then ever before because

Questions On Values And Values
Discussion Topic #2 Prompts
Prompt #1: Values Worksheet: What were your top 5 values? What kinds of defining characteristics
did you associate with your values as you crossed them off the list one at a time until you had only one
value listed? What did you learn about your values hierarchy through this activity?
First, my top ten values were difficult in itself to pick out because I feel like I could have had many of
the checklist highlighted. For instructional purposes I picked adventure, challenging problems, public
service, being around open and honest people, leadership, integrity, honesty, helping others, having a
family, and responsibility. If I were to narrow my list down to five, I would have adventure, integrity,
helping ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
What are your core values in each of those areas of identity? Highlight several key areas of identity
that guide you in life and think about whether the values you ascribed to these areas are values that
you truly live by or simply talk about. Discuss any values gaps
I feel like my values checklist mirrors my identities table. Being a veteran, I was involved in public
service, I was a leader, I challenged problems, I had adventure, I had responsibility and accountability
and I had integrity. Helping others values connect with me being a massage therapist. In addition with
being a husband, the values of honesty, adventure, integrity, being around open and honest people,
responsibility and accountability, and having a family come into play. I understand that these exercises
are created to get us thinking on a deeper, emotional level, however I also think your values need to be
limited in a list of ten or five. I think naturally most of our values list is longer.
Prompt #3: Dreams and Desires Worksheet: What underlying meaning did you discover through
exploring your dreams and desires in this manner? Can you see a connection between what you desire
and your inner sense of purpose? Explain.
When I came up with my desires list, I found that the majority of them had to do with creating s table
future. My parents were able to retire before turning fifty five years old because of their smart
decision and not focusing on the material things. They focused on

A Free Trade Agreement ( Fta )
A free trade agreement (FTA) is a binding trade agreement signed two or more countries to agree on
mutual granting of tariff preferences and reduction of non tariff trade barriers in goods and services. In
order to deepen the economic integration of the signatory countries, the FTA also incorporates issues
of access to new markets, other regulatory issues related to trade, such as intellectual property,
investment, competition policy, financial services, telecommunications, electronic commerce, labor
and environmental provisions and mechanisms of trade protection and dispute settlement. FTAs have
an indefinite term, that is, to remain in force over time so they have in perpetuity. The free trade
agreements bring benefits which are related not only commercial aspects but are positive for the
economy as a whole: can reduce and often eliminate non tariff and tariff barriers to trade; contribute to
improving the competitiveness of companies (since it is possible to provide raw materials and
machinery at lower costs); facilitate the increased flow of foreign investment, by providing certainty
and stability over time investors.
Economy is a huge topic that looks to analyze the extraction, production and use of goods. Through
human history trade has been a form and part of economy. In the past trade was used as the main
source to obtain goods. In a trade there are two or more providers involved. When trades are done is
because the two sides involved are going to win something

The novel is mainly about George and Lennie and their life. But I am not going to write about that. I am mainly going to focus on the characters which live on the ranch in the book (Crooks, Candy, Curley and Slim). These are the characters which work on the ranch: Crooks takes care of the horses on the ranch. He has quite the history with those animals, the reason why he is called Crooks is that a horse kicked him and that left him with a crooked back. • 4. Family In The Count Of Monte Cristo In the film The Count of Monte Cristo, based on the novel of the same name by Alexander Dumas, the idea of family serves as serious matter that is capable of dictating the allegiances and motivations for the primary characters of the film. Furthermore, the idea of family is also depicted in the film, as a liability for the characters and a vulnerability that others in the film exploit. Within this examples can be seen in Villefort s action of imprisoning Edmond to protect his father, Albert s change of heart when it is revealed that Edmond is his father, and the class discrimination that Edmond encounters prior to his imprisonment. Edmond s imprisonment at the hands of Villefort is a defining moment of the film and is one motivated entirely by Villefort s filial ties. During this scene, Edmond shows evidence of a Bonapartist conspiracy through a letter given to him by Napoleon Bonaparte. Initially, Villefort realizes Edmond s innocence, but upon inspecting the letter it is revealed to him that the its contents incriminate his father. When this is revealed to him, Villefort burns the letter and imprisons Edmond for life in order to silence him. Through this, it is seen that the idea of family is capable of drastically altering the goals of characters, as Villefort immediately realizes that he must destroy ... • 6. Criteria for Evaluating Media Violence Essay No Universal Criteria for Evaluating Media Violence In a famous speech in 1995, Bob Dole, in an effort to gain more conservative support for his impending Republican Presidential Nomination, unleashed a damning indictment of the movie industry, seemingly unprovoked and somewhat puzzling. (Lacayo) Dole s speech and especially the rebuttals to it raise many questions central to the debate over violence in film: is violence destructive to impressionable viewers, is violence critical to the success of the industry, does violence have aesthetic value, who decides what is violent, and if something is found to be violent, should it be banned? By going beyond Dole s speech to carefully examine these questions, it is found that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Taking this into account, it is no coincidence that Dole selected The Lion King, Forrest Gump, and True Lies, all huge money earners, as his films that represent exemplary family films. (Lacayo) Viewed purely as an industry, violent content is vital to the success of current feature films; tobacco and alcohol companies produce and sell products that are proven to have negative effects, yet are allowed to continue selling. There is no concrete evidence regarding the effects of violent content in film, so how could an entire industry be penalized for speculation. However, to view this situation in terms of money only would seem cold hearted, so other variables must be taken into account. One such variable would be the question of whether film violence has actual aesthetic value, specifically if it has artistic worth. One would be hard pressed to argue that violence is not entertainment, the high grosses and popularity these films generate disprove that theory at it s core, at least from the standpoint of the public. Why do people watch scenes of extreme violence if not to be entertained? Perhaps people watch violence for it s cathartic value, releasing emotion in a healthy manner by allowing the characters onscreen to act out their personal, as well as the audience s emotions. Or possibly, people watch for the stimuli they receive by watching such hyper kinetic action. Maybe people watch to admire the stunts and special effects ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Influence Of English Culture In The Industrial Revolution English Culture Throughout the Industrial Revolution With a booming population of nine million, nineteenth century England experienced intense growing pains. The Industrial Revolution would not only provide jobs for the vast population and change the economy, but would birth a divided culture between the wealthy and poor. The injustices present in Victorian culture would inspire literary works and authors like Elizabeth Gaskell, who would be moved to write novels based on working conditions. Also during this time period, many new acts would be approved by the constitutional monarchy that would slowly repair the split culture. Through the years of 1811 to 1884, inspired by its constitutional monarchy, English culture was evinced in the literary work of Elizabeth Gaskell. During the time, England had established a constitutional monarchy. A constitutional monarchy is a political system in which a monarch acts as an official of a sovereign state with finite powers limited by a written (i.e., codified), unwritten (i.e., uncodified) or blended constitution (Edgecombe par. 1). The monarch is the Head of State and is to make and pass legislation ( The Role of the Monarchy par. 1). This political system also included a governing party to coincide with the monarch. The other type is the revolution from above , this was the revolution common of the higher class like Allende working towards workers rights. At first, the workers think that their revolution from below was only helping Allende s revolution from above. The workers did things like form unions for the first time, or were even so bold to strike against the mill in order to gain complete control over it. Strikes had happened before which were about things like wages or unions, but this was different for the fact that they wanted total control of the mill. Allende was forced to give the workers the power to control the mill. This is just one of the examples of how the revolution from below sometimes coincided with or complemented, but increasingly diverged from, the legalistic and modulated revolution from above (141). For the most part in fact, the strategies of Allende were disrupted by the revolution from below because of their need for extreme immediate progress. They view war as a match of equals, wherein a lone soldier can look his enemy in the eye as they battle, but, instead, they are forced to come to grips with the horrors of modern warfare. The planes are representative of the modern mechanical accomplishments that have emerged, which can replace the chivalric, soldier of the Old World. • 21. Columbus Day Pros And Cons In modern day society, we often overlook key points in history. For example, Columbus Day, why do we celebrate it? Well, from one s point of view, we celebrate this holiday for several reasons, one of these reasons are because it recalls Christopher Columbus entry to the Americas on October 12, 1492. This occasion is questionable on the grounds that the European settlement in the Americas prompted the downfall of the history and culture, of the indigenous people groups. What are some of the pros and cons from naming Columbus Day to Indigenous Day? That is what you will learn in this essay. To start off, Indigenous People s Day, or Columbus Day, Which do you prefer? First off, why is it called Columbus Day ? Well, as stated earlier, it was named after Christopher Columbus, who as we believe today, discovered America. Many believe that it was him who founded the Americas, but really there could ve been earlier settlers or even Native Americans who lived on those territories before Columbus made his way there. What is a pro of having this day named after Columbus? A source I found called www.scholastic.com stated, The holiday honoring Christopher Columbus s sighting of America on October 12, 1492, is observed in the states of the United States and also in parts of Canada, in Puerto Rico, and in some cities in Italy and Spain. Although Columbus was not the first explorer to set foot in the Western Hemisphere, his landing at San Salvador Island in what is now the Bahamas was very important. It opened the way for the settlement of America by Europeans. So, basically we named this holiday after Columbus because it was assumed that he was one of the first to see and discover the Americas. Another source titled www.osia.org stated Columbus Day celebrates the beginning of cultural exchange between America and Europe. • 22. Commodification Of Halloween With the increase in reinterpretations of death and Halloween symbols, two fundamental things occurred, the mass commodification of Halloween and a decontextualization of the symbols of death. In 1978 the premiere of Halloween, directed by John Carpenter, directly placed the holiday itself in relation to horror and gruesome death, more so than the introduction of gothic horror ever did (Rogers 110; Khapaeva 58). The introduction of explicit horror, according to Rogers, created. a coded language that enables authors and invites their audiences to explore their fears, hidden desires, and anxieties (110). This established a creative space in which fantasy and dissociation could be merged creating a popularization of death without actually dealing with the reality of death itself. It created a space where the narrative of horror and death could be controlled and regulated, through established archetypes. This directly contrasted the collective psyche of the 1970s and 80s in the United States, which was dealing with the ramifications of the AIDS epidemic (the worst epidemic since Polio), and an increase in social, religious, and political conservatism (Khapaeva 78). Through horror movies and Halloween, social anxieties could be dealt with in an a political and creative way, while still maintaining the sanitized separation of hospital and culture. In the contemporary period, Halloween s popularity has increased. Personal expenditures on Halloween have drastically increased since the 2000s, to create a multi billion dollar industry, which has expanded the cultural awareness and practice of Halloween (Khapaeva 57). However, this expansion has led to the commodification of Halloween, by equating it with consumer culture. This has significant implications for the cultural conception of death as it equate previously potent symbols with cheap goods. But this might have been by design, as Grider argues that the mass commercialization of Halloween is another way in which collectively western culture can control the potentially dangerous incursion of the supernatural world in our everyday lives (10). Through the ownership of material goods associated with Halloween, the narrative and context of the concepts are further ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

How Did Jeremiah s Corrupt Kings Jeremiah Judah s corrupt kings Jeremiah is commonly known as the weeping prophet because of his deep commitment to and empathy and compassion for the people of Judah; to whom he was chosen to chastise. He was a prophet during the reign of five kings including: Josiah, Jehoahaz, Jehoiakim, Jehoiachin, and Zedekiah. King Josiah had brought about reform throughout Judah and Jerusalem, restoring the people to proper worship of God. However, when the king died, subsequent kings returned to the corrupt religious practices of: idolatry, child sacrifice, and worship of Baal and other false gods, which had been established by previous kings. Although God had withheld his wrath during King Josiahs reign; it would eventually fall upon Judah because of the sins and evil that the other kings had promoted. On July 26th, Castro led the attack on the Moncada Barracks in order to take over enemy transmitters. However, a lack of planning and poor miscommunication on Castro s side led to a severe defeat, leading to Castro s capture. Although Castro let out on a technicality, President Batista chose to publicize Castro s trial as well as his History Will Absolve Me speech. In his speech, Castro advocated for reforms in the country s political structure advocating for establishment of the 1940 Constitution and focusing on the collective society, not an individual force. Outlining the five laws needed to create a revolution, Castro related to his fellow Cuban revolutionaries through various literary techniques such as use of rhetoric and references to Cuba s agricultural history. One of the underlying themes in Castro s speech was his ability to underscore that there was a fundamental problem in Cuba s economy. This happened on Boxing Day in 2004 in the Indian Ocean where there was a 1000km thrust fault from a release of stress along the constructive destructive plate boundary. No technology was in place to detect such a disaster and, although scientists knew a tsunami was likely to hit Southern Asia, most of the warnings were too late and the first TV broadcasts in Thailand even happened after the waves had hit. Up to 290,000 people were killed and thousands of bodies are still missing to this day. Since this disaster, a tsunami warning system has been put in place in the Indian Ocean and technology such as this is almost guaranteed to prevent such a high death toll for the future. There is a strong argument that if such technology was implemented before 2004, then thousands of lives could have been saved through evacuation and similar measures. The question is how much of mental imagery is actually a part of visual perception? The concept of a unitary mechanism has been recurrently mentioned in the text, although little has been said about what it means and implies. Although measures of haemodynamic activity and brain lesion studies provide some insightful information on the issue, other behavioural data is necessary to understand whether visual imagery is processed in the same way as perception. Finke and Pinker (1982) used reaction times as a mental tape measure in which participants were required to look at an array of dots, once the dots disappeared and an arrow appeared, participants were requested to indicate whether the arrow was pointing at a previous dot or not. If the distance of the arrow was increased than the reaction time was expected to increase while one imagines scanning the image. This final research begs for the question, would eye movements show the same pattern of scanning ? If visual perception and visual imagery have so much in common, than we might expect that the eye sequences present in visual perception will also be present and similar in visual imagery. There is strong evidence that this is in fact true, several studies show that spontaneous eye movements occur during visual imagery and in most of the studies the movements reflect the content and spatial relations of the originally perceived object. Cultural Capital As An Agent Of Change Essay When examining a family s history it is obvious that the many children have ended up with the same level of education as their parents and ancestors. Children whose parents received tertiary level education normally obtain a qualification from tertiary level education as well. This idea was first questioned by Pierre Bourdieu who introduced the concept of cultural capital. Cultural capital is the skills that a person can use to their advantage in a social situation, especially in education. While observing a classroom children were being dismissed because they did not speak the language, their low cultural capital impacted their learning immensely; however, in another classroom I observed the teacher being an agent of change. Striving to include every child in the lesson depict the diverse range of cultural capital present. These two different situations impacted when the child was present, how the children participated in class and their overall achievement. Cultural capital is the ideas and knowledge that people draw upon and use as an asset in social situations. As Lamont Lareau state the idea of cultural capital was introduced in the 1960s by Pierre Bourdieu, a French sociologist, anthropologist and philosopher. The concept was originally designed to explain why children from certain backgrounds would often repeat their family history in education (Lamont Lareau).
