Gulliver s Travels By Jonathan Swift
A Humbling Inspiration In 1726 author Jonathan Swift published a satirical, narrative entitled Gulliver
s Travels (Davis, Harrison and Johnson 229). Gulliver s Travels is a novel that has continued to
contribute and thrive in both literature and the film genres. Swift uses comical events and
extraordinary characters to address moral issues that remain decades later in today s society. Gulliver s
Travels has since been reproduced in the film industry multiple times, most recently in 2010 (Gulliver
s Travels). Swift s creative work takes his prideful main character and protagonist, Lemuel Gulliver
through many events which leads to his most traumatizing and humbling experience. A minor
characters within the text, Don Pedro de Mendez is one of the most influential characters that impacts
Gulliver s traveling experience. Don Pedro de Mendez is a character that helps uplift Gulliver from
mild depression and encourages him to embrace who he is while remaining thoughtful of his
shortcomings. Don Pedro de Mendez as a minor character contributes to both Gulliver s life and the
theme of the text. Mendez is a Portuguese captain who discoveries Gulliver on an island after his exile
by the Houyhnhnm tribe. During Gulliver s and Mendez s interactions the readers are introduced to
the moral concept of humbleness and how pride can affect one s perception. Gulliver s exile from the
island of the Houyhnhnm tribe and Yahoos causes him to fall into a great depression, due to his
passion

Essay on The Black Death
The Black Death was an extensive epidemic that spread across Europe from 1346 to 1353, killing over
an estimated one third of Europe s entire population (Medieval World 56). Although historians are not
entirely sure of its origin, the Black Death spread quickly across both Europe and Asia with a death
toll that augmented rapidly. The plague also had unusual and deadly symptoms, causing panic
everywhere, with men and women knowing no way to stop death except to flee from it (Kohn 28).
The chaos created by the malevolent force of the Black Death impacted the society of Europe as a
whole. Despite the extent of the Black Death, we know surprisingly little of it (Cartwright and Biddiss

The bubonic plague was the main contender of the Black Death (Byrne 15 16) which was primarily
spread through the bacteria Yersinia pestis found in the stomach (Corbishley 47) of the Xenopsylla
cheopis, a common flea (Byrne 197). The flea would then feed on a host s blood, and regurgitate the
bacteria into the host, causing the victim to become infected the bubonic plague (Nox). The Rattus
rattus, or black rat, is considered to have helped the spread of the Black Death by carrying the fleas
that carried the bacteria causing bubonic plague (Byrne 196). Upon infection of the bubonic plague, a
variety of symptoms appeared quite quickly. During the first few days, victims would develop a
headache, chills, a fever, weakness, an increased pulse, and a white tongue. As the disease progressed,
red and black spots, also called gangrene, appeared due to the body s tissue dying, and buboes,
swollen lymph nodes filled with blood, puss, and bacteria, appeared on the victim s groin, neck, and
arm pits (Zahler 26 27). As the plague progressed, the bacteria began running rampant throughout the
victim s body, eventually developing pneumonic plague, a plague within the lungs (Cartwright and
Biddiss 30). The symptoms of pneumonic plague mirror the symptoms of en exceptionally virulent

Record Stigmas
There is no doubt that there is a serious stigma attached to an individual with a record. A record could
be as minor as a one time arrest where the charges are dropped, or as serious as a felony. Even though
individuals may have paid their debts they are still labeled and their record, no matter how minor,
follows them around for life. This poses an issue for many people. Many employers state that they
would not hire an application with a criminal record. Just like any other social issue, there are some
solutions that could ease the burden on these individuals who are being stigmatized. The biggest thing
that can be done is to talk about the issue. The more open a person is with their past, and their
mistakes the less shocking it will be. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Since the beginning of civilization, architects have been designing structures and buildings. They are

Nineteenth Century: Iron, Glass and Steel
The nineteenth century saw some changes from the previous artistic periods. This period contained
practical ideas, still with a sort of creative though.
Buildings and towers were built with steel and iron beams and supports. Glass covered steel/iron webs
to create walls, large window, and sunroofs .
A famous architect from this time period is Alexandre Gustave Eiffel.
He built the Eiffel Tower, Bon Marchà Department Store, The Nice
Observatory and The Garabit Bridge.
Following this period was the modern period. Many of the styles and ideas were carried to the Modern
period, and built into designs in a whole different perspective, as now there were different
architectures with different ideas and dreams.
Saint Peter s

It was created to replace the great basilica (temple), which had been designed by Constantine the

Eating Disorders
According to The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) website, eating disorders are actually
serious and often fatal illnesses causing serve disturbances to a person s eating behaviors. People with
eating disorders often have obsessions with food, their body weight, and their shape. There is,
however, a difference between an eating disorder and a diet. It is important to know the difference.
Eating disorders are a daily struggle for 10 million females and 1 million males in the United States
(Eating Disorder Hope). An eating disorder is a compulsion to avoid eating in order to lose weight
while a diet is cutting down eating or healthier eating in order to lose weight. The three types of an
eating disorders are anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder. All three disorders
are important and they all deserve immediate treatment. No matter what eating disorder someone has,
it can resort in organ damage and sometimes even death.
The average that someone develops anorexia is 19 years old (NIMH), but that does not mean a person
can only be 19 in order to develop an eating disorder. The NIMH has reported cases of eating
disorders reporting in ages as low as .1 percent of eight to eleven year olds and .2 percent of twelve to
fifteen year olds. Eating disorders are becoming more common for students in high school and
college, since they view it as a coping mechanism to handle their

How Can Adversity be Advantageous Essay
Adversity puts people in difficult or unpleasant situations which can create very strong emotions that
can help or harm. When people face adversity, it is seen as a challenge and whether or not they
overcome the challenge is personal. However regardless of whether adversity helps or harms, it is
advantageous because it offers a challenge to overcome which builds character. I believe it to be true
of the whole human race that when something pushes you down you look to find a way out of it. We
always try our best to overcome adversity and that can make us stronger. In many cases the workers
that a lot of us pay to clean and cook are faced with adversity from the start. As young kids growing

Clint Dempsey is a soccer player, probably the greatest American soccer player in the world right now.
He was born into a poor family in Texas that lived in a trailer. He was given very little things, however
he still had the opportunity to play soccer due to his company and culture. His sister died at the age of
16 due to a brain disease, which Dempsey says motivated him to do better. The other kids in poverty
around him were hispanics who loved the sport of soccer. And seemingly Clint must have enjoyed it
too because he was able to play on clubs travel around the united States and go to college all because
of his skills at soccer. It shows that adversity can affect a people, but it cannot deeply affect a culture,
a way of life. If nothing it strengthens it because of history and the importance of family and friends in
times of adversity. Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger, introduces us to Holden Caulfield is one of my

Character Analysis of Blanche DuBois in Tennessee...
Character Analysis of Blanche Through Text and Symbolism in A Streetcar Named Desire
Tennessee Williams was once quoted as saying Symbols are nothing but the natural speech of
drama...the purest language of plays (Adler 30). This is clearly evident in A Streetcar Named Desire,
one of Williams s many plays. In analyzing the main character of the story, Blanche DuBois, it is
crucial to use both the literal text as well as the symbols of the story to get a complete and thorough
understanding of her.
Before one can understand Blanche s character, one must understand the reason why she moved to
New Orleans and joined her sister, Stella, and brother in law, Stanley. By analyzing the symbolism in
the first scene, one ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She escaped death in her use of desire. However, she could not escape death for long. She was a
teacher at a high school, and at one point, she had intimacies with a seventeen year old student. The
superintendent, Mr. Graves, found out about this and she was fired from her job. Her reputation was
totally destroyed and she could no longer stay there. Mr. Graves sent her to her next stop on her
symbolic journey a train named Cemeteries . Her final destination was Elysian Fields . The inhabitants
of this place are described in Book six of the Aenead:
They are the souls, answered his [Aeneas ] father Anchises, / Whose destiny it is a second time
To live in the flesh and there by the waters of Lethe / They drink the draught that sets them free from
care
And blots out their memory. (Quirino 61)
This is the place of the living dead. Blanche came to Elysian Fields to forget her horrible past, and to
have a fresh start in life (Quirino, 63). In fact Blanche admits in the fourth scene that she wants to
make myself a new life (Williams 135).
Through a knowledge of the circumstances that brought Blanche to Elysian Fields, it is easy to
understand the motives behind many of Blanche s actions. One such action is that of constant bathing.
This action represents her need to purify herself from her past (Corrigan 53). However, it is important
to note that Blanche s description of her traveling came before she actually settled

The Cyclic Innovation Model ( Cim )
Q1. Use the Cyclic Innovation Model (Fig 1.9, pg 30) figure to illustrate the innovation process in this
case and provide a brief description?
According to The cyclic innovation model (CIM) is a model of innovation process that a company
adapts to introduce new products and a combination that is backed by the use of innovation so that
they are able to evolve within the current market. According to (Trott, Paul 2008) The most important
feature of the cyclic innovation model is not the chain but the circle of innovations build on

Essay on The Stranger and the Alchemist
THE STRANGER and THE ALCHEMIST
Belief and Response Essay As one would make it through The Alchemist or The Stranger they would
start to notice a clear separation of what each of these books portray. On one side you have The
Alchemist which represents more of a positive outlook on life and following your dreams. On the
other you have The Stranger which depicts more of a negative connotation on life. Although these two
accounts seem far from each other, they present themes throughout the text that show up in both
novels. A theme commonly noticed in both books is love and its effects on each books main character.
Another is the meaning of life , which explains why we are here on this earth. The last is the idea of
destiny/fate , which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The meaning of life also shows up a lot in both of these books. In The Alchemist the meaning of life is
stated as finding your personal legend and following your dreams. ...whoever you are, or whatever it is
that you do, when you really want something, it s because that desire originated in the soul of the
universe. It s your mission on earth. (pg. 22) Melchizedek states this saying, follow what the universe
is telling you to do. That is what you were put on the earth to do. We see The Stranger s view in the
very last lines of the novel... As if that blind rage had washed me clean, rid me of hope; for the first
time, in that night alive with signs and stars, I opened myself to the gentle indifference of the world.
Finding it so much like myself so like a brother, really I felt that I had been happy and that I was
happy again. For everything to be consummated, for me to feel less alone, I had only to wish that there
be a large crowd of spectators the day of my execution and that they greet me with cries of hate. (pg.
122 123) Meursault finally accepts that death is inevitable and he can t avoid it. He also comes to a
conclusion that life in general lacks meaning and order no matter who you are. At a ripe age of 18 and
still much to learn, I seem to think life isn t based on finding your personal legend. Life is life, and I
play it by year and go with the flow. I wasn t put on this earth for

Latin America Changes
The Americas, now known as Latin America, has gone through many changes in its history, from
being conquered by Spain and Portugal, to the people fighting for its independence and finally,
making a living as newly independent countries. From the years 1850 to the end of the 19th century,
each region had influences, specifically those that dealt with the after effects colonial rule had on the
land. Nations that made up Latin America began modifying different portions in their government in
attempts to benefit the majority of the people. More or so, they accomplished this goal, each with their
own challenges. Evidently, changes within the social, political and economic systems were focused on
external factors.

wanted Catholicism to remain the official religion of the new republics. Liberals were influenced by
progressive models while conservatives stayed with the old colonial model. Although liberalism wasn

The earliest form of slavery in North America can be traced back to Jamestown, Virginia in 1619.
There, they were called the Twenty and Odd and considered servants rather than slaves. Though little

By the end of the war, there were roughly 198,000 African Americans in the Civil War. This was a

also for the South who would see them in combat. There were disputes among both sides over the
Union taking slaves from the South and ultimately rescuing them. Though the North claimed it was
legal, considering slaves were property and both sides were allowed to raid and confiscate property
from each other. This was particular accomplishment on the Union s half, for it took the Confederate s
words and used them against them.
The Union won the war and slavery was officially abolished with the thirteenth amendment in 1865.

Nickel and Dimed Essays
In Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America, Barbara Ehrenreich tells a powerful and gritty
story of daily survival. Her tale transcends the gap that exists between rich and poor and relays a
powerful accounting of the dark corners that lie somewhere beyond the popular portrayal of American
prosperity. Throughout this book the reader will be intimately introduced to the world of the working
poor , a place unfamiliar to the vast majority of affluent and middle class Americans. What makes this
world particularly real is the fact that we have all come across the hard working hotel maid, store
associate, or restaurant waitress but we hardly ever think of what their actual lives are like? We
regularly dismiss these people as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To accomplish this, she provided herself a small amount of startup money, and traveled to multiple
locations around the United States where she conducted her experiment . She went to Key West, FL;
Orchard Beach, ME; and Minneapolis, MN; and found employment and a place to live, with a goal of
saving enough by the end of the month to pay the next month s rent. Her employment consisted of
restaurant waitress and hotel maid in Florida, nursing home aide and a house cleaning maid in Maine,
and a Wal Mart associate in Minnesota.
As the author moved from locale to locale she identified a variety of recurring hardships faced by the
working poor. The chief concern for many was housing. Finding and maintaining economical housing
was the principal source of disruption in their lives. For many of the working poor it s not uncommon
to spend more than 50% of income on housing. These leaves a scarce amount of money left over for
anything else and creates a situation where the person is always worried about losing their shelter. In a
nutshell, it s Ehrenreich s conviction that wages are too low and rents are too high. She does speak
with many individuals who simply cannot afford the high rental rates and are forced to live with
family, friends, or in some

Research Paper On Grave s Disease
Solange Wright
Mr. O Donnell
Bio Society
November 29, 2016
Grave s Disease is an autoimmune disease that affects the thyroid and its hormone production.
Normally, a healthy immune system releases antibodies that are designed to attack bacteria and
viruses. In addition to antibodies, the thyroid creates hormones that regulate overall hormone
production. With Grave s Disease, the immune system releases antibodies that imitate these thyroid
hormones; this leads to overproduction of hormones, or hyperthyroidism. Doctors are not sure as to
what exactly causes Grave s disease, but it is speculated that factors such as age play a role; as in,
younger people are typically more prone to this illness. Its symptoms include anxiety; sweating; heart

It is often the first resort for doctors when deciding how to treat their patient. First, a test is
administered to determine the appropriate dosage for the individual. This is done by intaking a small
quantity of the radioactive iodine, and seeing how the thyroid reacts to it. The more iodine the thyroid
absorbs, the smaller the prescribed dosage will be. The drug is taken via pill, and is absorbed only by
the thyroid cells; thus, no other cells will be affected by the drug s radiation. Once ingested, the
radiation immediately destroys almost all of the thyroid cells. This form of treatment may sound
flawless, but it is not certain. There are numerous risks associated with radioactive iodine therapy. The
most common would be hypothyroidism, which is the exact opposite of Grave s disease. Instead of
your thyroid overproducing hormones, the opposite occurs: not enough hormones are produced for the
body to metabolize. This results in patients having to take thyroid replacement therapy for the rest of
their lives ( Radioactive Iodine for Hyperthyroidism par. 10). Expecting mother also cannot use RAI
because the radiation can damage the fetus thyroid, which can have a negative effect on its growth and
development. In addition to RAI being risky, it is also not the most efficacious treatment option. It can
typically take half a year to successfully eliminate the defective

during their Family and Community Medicine clerkship between May 2014 and December 2015. An
existing ninety minute didactic education session for Preventive Medicine topics was enhanced
through the addition of nutrition content related to chronic disease prevention and treatment. The
curriculum was designed by Meharry faculty based on a thorough literature review, including
guidelines and recommendations from organizations such as the National Institutes of Health,
American Diabetes Association, and USPSTF.21 The content was tailored toward identification of risk
factors, screening, and dietary recommendations for coronary heart disease, diabetes mellitus type 2,
and hyperlipidemia. The expected impact was improvement of nutrition knowledge and increased
comfort and intention to use such knowledge in future practice. The presentation was delivered by
Meharry Preventive Medicine faculty and Preventive Medicine resident physicians. Each training
session consisted of a pre test, an interactive didactic session, and a post test. The students were
provided with a written disclaimer about the study which emphasized that their participation was
voluntary. Scoring of the pre and post test was neither shared with the clerkship director nor did it
impact the students grades. The intervention was approved by the Meharry Medical College IRB. The

My Interview with a Jewish Friend Essay examples
Introduction of the religion The religion I decided to do this interview on is Judaism. I have always
been interested in this religion and was ready to learn more. One of the three great monotheistic world
religions, Judaism began as the faith of the ancient Hebrews, and its sacred text is the Hebrew Bible,
particularly the Torah. Fundamental to Judaism is the belief that the people of Israel are God s chosen
people, who must serve as a light for other nations. God made a covenant first with Abraham, then
renewed it with Isaac, Jacob, and Moses. The worship of Yahweh (God) was centered in Jerusalem
from the time of David.

These are things that all Jews share.
3. What different methods of worship does your religion practice?
Answer: Traditionally, Jews use certain rituals on a daily basis, too. Some of these are: putting on the
Tallit (a prayer shawl) and Tefillin (phylacteries, which are small leather boxes containing verses from
the Bible that remind Jews of their duties one worn on the forehead and one on the arm), praying three
times a day, and keeping the dietary laws called Kashrut.
4. Is there a particular day you practice these methods of worship?
Answer: Yes of course. Jews have long revered Shabbat, the Sabbath, as a taste of the world to come,
a time of rest, of peace, and of contentment. From sundown on Friday night until sundown on
Saturday night, observant Jews set aside time to pray and study a day to refrain from work and
everyday cares.
5. What is your place of worship called?
6. What are the important holidays and traditions of this religion?
Answer: Yes a few are: the high holy days, sukkot, hannukkah, pesach, the omer period, Shavuot, and
tishah.
7. How has religion shaped your life?
Answer: Of course it has. Being Jewish is what I am. I was raised this way, left this way of life and
came back. I love being the Jewish man I am.

Women, Islamic, And Saudi Arabian Women
The topic that stood out to me the most would be the impact of ethnicity amongst women. It is
amazing how much being a woman and being part of a certain ethnicity can have such an impact on a
woman s life. It is already hard enough for woman to been seen as equal, just imagine what it is like
being a woman of a particular ethnicity. The two articles that we discussed in class are about Filipino,
Islamic, and Saudi Arabian women. Filipino, Islamic, and Saudi Arabian women share some things in
common when it comes to their everyday lives and cultures. Within the Philippine culture, men and
women have very different duties in life. Men are supposed to be the worker of the house and the
women stay in and take care of the family. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, America has started to not think about that stereotype as much, whereas the Philippine
people have not budged on thinking any differently. Another thing that Filipina woman go through is
not having the privileges like other boys, especially their brothers. The author states, parents seldom
allowed their daughters to date, to stay out late, to spend the night at a friend s house, or to take an out
of town trip (Espiritu, p. 16). Therefore, the Filipino girls do not get to experience what it is like to be
a teenager. The girls could experience not being able to be social because of their parents keeping
them so distanced from the real world. This could damage them when they become adults. Another
thing that stood out was the same parents that are stopping their daughter from doing all these things,
are not stopping their son, who could be even younger than the daughter. This makes absolutely no
sense because why would someone let a younger child do something over the older child? A part of
the article that stood out to me was although many parents discourage or forbid dating for daughter,
they still fully expect them to fulfill their traditional roles as women: to marry and have children
(Espiritu, p. 17). This quote shows that Filipino woman do not have choices in life. It is like the
parents are being hypocrites because they are telling them not to do one thing but then expect them to
have a family. How are they supposed to both when they

In these paper author focus on finding the gap in understanding how complex individual Web sites are

Web sites fetched content from minimum five non origin sources, and these give more than 35% of the

Folic Acid Before Pregnancy
Studies have shown women taking folic acid before pregnancy gave birth to healthier children. The
finding showed significant reductions in serious birth defects of the children. Folic acid is an essential
nutrient if you are trying to conceive or now pregnant. It becomes a staple for women during the
breast feeding phase and should continue throughout the adult life.
Too many women in this age range fail to get ample amounts of folic acid. The sad part, the required
amounts of folate is within easy reach. A healthy and well balanced diet comprised of natural fruits,

Computer addiction
A disorder in which the individual turns to the Internet or plays computer games in an attempt to
change moods, overcome anxiety, deal with depression, reduce isolation or loneliness, or distract
themselves from overwhelming problems. The elderly, as well as children and adolescents, are
particularly vulnerable because they may not realize the extent of their dependency. In many
instances, individuals with computer addiction may seek help for another condition, such as
depression, phobias or other addictions. Computer addiction is defined as the immoderate/compulsive
use of computers so much so that it interferes with daily activities. It is a disorder whereby the

A 2008 study concluded that the pathological gambler has clear tendencies towards alcoholism,
nicotine addiction, or drug addiction (Beteille, 2008). Many other activities when left unchecked may
lead to compulsive behavior and ethical conflicts. These activities include excessive cell phone texting
and social networking.
Disadvantages of Computer Addiction
A person addicted to the Computer will spend most of his time alone, locked in a room, with only his
computer for company. This kind of isolation can lead to a lack of social life, and when he does
venture outside, he might find his social skills have suffered. Possibly his only regular interaction is
with online people, and he might now struggle to hold conversations and feel comfortable in social or
public environments. A Computer addiction can create health problems. Some health issues suffered
by Computer addicts are bad eyesight, which is caused by spending too much time squinting at the
screen; poor posture and constant computer use can lead to bad back and carpal tunnel syndrome.
Because a Computer addiction lowers the chance of exercise, and those with an addiction might no
longer take the time to prepare healthy meals, obesity is also a risk. Some Computer addicts risk
losing their jobs or failing classes, because they spend so much time online and are often late or
absent. An Internet addict might also find his personal relationships suffer under the weight of so
much time spent

Zeus In Frankenstein
As the leader of Mount Olympus, the gods, and the universe, Zeus was often looked up to as the
shining example excellence in Greek society. According to the people s beliefs, Zeus was a partial
reason for their creation, as he gave the titan, Prometheus, the task of creating man. Prometheus
created man out of clay, yet the people looked up to Zeus for motivation and inspiration. However,
Zeus was not always a role model, committing adultery against his wife, Hera, and letting his anger
get the best of him in cases of lashing out against the people of Earth and the other gods. However, for
the most part, the humans that he was responsible for acted in a far more compassionate and caring

This can be seen when he says, Oh, Frankenstein! Generous and self devoted being! What does it avail
that I now ask thee to pardon me? I who irretrievably destroyed thee by destroying all thou lovest.
Alas! He is cold, he cannot answer me (Shelley, 221). In the following pages, however, the monster
admits to having shown a lack of compassion during the murders of Henry Clerval and Victor s wife,
Elizabeth. Even though the monster seems to be mindlessly killing people close to Victor, one can
argue that his rampage was based on humanity. Before the murders, the creature simply seeks a female
companion from his creator, to be able to, interchange of those sympathies necessary for [its] being
(Shelley, 147). While Victor did initially comply, he throws the idea out the window, and as a result,
the monster experiences true heartbreak. This heartbreak leads the monster to commit the crimes that
it did, inflicting a fairly equal amount of pain upon Frankenstein compared to the suffering inflicted on
the monster. For example, Victor promotes the suffering by taking away the companion and creating
the creature in a wretched form. Furthermore, the monster is extremely young, so like a child crying
over a bump on a table, Frankenstein s creation is overreacting to a situation that he has never
encountered before. He solely acts out of a long for humanity and equality in the world he was forced
into. This is seen on page 222, when Victor s monster says to Robert Walton, he sought his own
enjoyment in feelings and passions form the indulgence of which I was forever barred, then impotent
envy and bitter indignation filled me with an insatiable thirst for vengeance (Shelley,

HPV_ Human Papillomavirus
If I told you that Human papillomavirus (HPV) was the most common sexually transmitted disease in
the United States and if left untreated could cause 70% of cervical cancers, would you want children
to be required to get the vaccine? (Sourced) HPV vaccine is very controversial, not only because it is
starting to be mandatory in the U.S but also because it is only mandatory for female children to get it.
Researchers claim that the cancers associated with HPV cost $3.7 billion in 2003 alone. (Source)
Cervical cancer is the second most lethal cancer to all women but should it be mandatory for only one
gender even though men can carry it as well? (source) The disease specifically affects those in poverty
and results in higher rates of cancer in black and Hispanic women. (Source) Some states are starting to
require female students in public schools to receive vaccination for HPV by the sixth grade. (Source)
When public schools become advocates for a vaccination, it tends to be a big ordeal and starts to catch

THE PARMALAT SCANDAL
The Parmalat situation started out as a fairly standard although sizeable accounting fraud. Not even
the best auditors could prepare for what was to come from this company. The Parmalat group, a world
leader in the dairy food business, collapsed and entered bankruptcy protection in December 2003 after
acknowledging massive holes in its financial statements. This happened when billions of euros seem
to have gone missing from the company s accounts. This dramatic collapse has led to the questioning
of the soundness of accounting and financial reporting standards as well as of the Italian corporate
governance system. Parmalat, which is headquartered in the central Italian city of Parma, was, like

Most of the money that moved in, around and out of the company has since been traced, although the
final destination of some of it is still unknown. Tanzi has admitted transferring some €500 million to
family firms, but investigators say that up to €1.3 billion may have gone this route. Tanzi was
sentenced to 10 years in prison for fraud relating to the collapse of the dairy group. The other seven
defendants, including executives and bankers, were acquitted. Another eight defendants settled out of
court in September 2008. In September 2009, three lawsuits by Parmalat Capital Finance Ltd. and
Enrico Bondi, CEO of Parmalat, against Bank of America and auditors Grant Thornton, were
dismissed.
In an attempt to downplay the extent to which corruption and fraud have penetrated to the heart of
global capitalism, commentators have seized on the fact that many of Parmalat s former top executives
are related to claim that the scandal is simply a case of a family firm failing to adhere to good
corporate governance practices. Not surprisingly, Parmalat s top executives are going along with this
story, insisting they were only acting under orders from the padrone. The scandal, however, has
engulfed other major firms. There are the accounting firms Grant Thornton and Deloitte and Touche,
and the banks Citicorp and Bank of America. Citicorp is directly linked to the $1.5

Characteristics Of Paul Morel As A Modern Man
An Archetype can be defined as a primitive set of qualities and attribute, inherited deep in the
subconscious that can serve as a recurring theme or motif in Literature and Art. To determine if Paul
Morel is an archetypal modern man, one must consider: What makes a modern man? Is it the spiritual
hollowness that Eliot talks about? Is it the embodiment of Freud s psychoanalytic theories? Could it be
the rugged product of the harsh post Victorian industrialized lifestyle?
In Sons and Lovers, Lawrence focuses on the personal development of Paul Morel as he grows up
with an alcoholic and emotionally unstable father, Walter Morel, and his mother, Gertrude Morel, with
who he develops a strong bond. This relationship is the first to elaborate a developmental condition in
young boys, which Freud will later call as the Oedipal Complex . This bond will continue to shape
Paul s life. It governs his ambitions, his work, his plans for the future and his love life. What makes
Paul an interesting character in modernist literature is his psyche. He is a product of the circumstances
that he has grown up in. His mind is a blend of contradictions and conflicts, various traits that can be

Just about everyone slept the rest of the night until morning. Once we woke up, the bus stopped. Bus
drivers are required to stop the bus every four hours. We got off the bus and got ourselves some
breakfast. Most of us went to McDonalds and the rest got whatever seemed good to them. We got back
on the bus and drove another four hours. Even though the bus ride was long, we enjoyed ourselves the
best we could. Our bus probably watched every movie we brought along ... Show more content on

They re a lot of people and traffic in Boston, and our bus took up half the road. Our tour guide jumped
on the bus and told what we re going to be seeing and asked us questions. Finally, everyone ran off the
bus and stretched out after making a stop. The tour guide took us to a church where Benjamin Franklin
got baptized. Then we walked to the Harvard college where Benjamin Franklin and John F. Kennedy
studied. We walk around a grave and saw some historical people that got buried there.
After all that, I was hungry. Our tour guide took us to a place where there was a bunch of different
options to eat at. I got a piece of pizza and sat outside with the others. As I was enjoying my lunch, I
told myself that I m glad we went to Boston first before New York. It seems like there was sirens
going off all the time, whether that d be the police, ambulance, or fire truck.
The Next day, we went to the New England Sea Aquarium. Once we got inside their s a big glass tank
in the middle of the aquarium that went up about 4 floors. As you re looking at animals you made
yours up to the top of the tank. Theirs a sea animal profession talking to you about different species of
sea turtles and fish. Just outside of the aquarium was a sea lion exhibit, and I probably watch them the
longest. Its fun watching them interact with their

when he started to write down specific and detailed amendments. The state s only approved ten out of
the twelve that he had made. The importance of the Bill of Rights is that it protects the citizens. For
instance, the accused are being protected. As stated in amendment six, In all criminal prosecutions, the

Hubble Space Telescope Research Paper
Hubble Space Telescope The Hubble Space Telescope is the first major telescope that was placed in
space. It has been in operation for over twenty five years, and has greatly changed our knowledge of
the universe. It can observe galaxies and stars that are very far away since it is not blocked at all by
light pollution and smog that obstructs the views of the telescopes on Earth. Hubble is fascinating
because it was and still is the most revolutionary telescope since Galileo first looked through one over
four hundred years ago. Hubble played a large role in helping scientists discover and learn about many
things like dark matter and dark energy, the age of the universe, and gamma ray bursts. None of these
discoveries would have been possible without Hubble s unique view of the universe. ... Show more

Dark matter is a type of matter that is invisible, but accounts for most of the mass and structure of the
universe. Hubble allowed scientists to observe how dark matter bends the light of galaxies that are far
away through gravitational lensing. Scientists could then theorize about the existence of dark matter.
Due to Hubble s unique viewpoint, scientists could also map where dark matter is located and how it
is distributed in galaxies. Hubble also played a large role in the discovery of dark energy. Dark energy
is a repulsive force that causes the universe to expand at a faster and faster rate. Hubble not only
detected the presence of dark energy, but also that it has been around since almost the beginning of the
universe. It was used to look back in time at supernovae, which are used to trace how the universe
expanded. Only Hubble could be used for this task because telescopes on the ground would be unable
to see these very distant and faint supernovae. Hubble changed the field of astronomy through its part
in discovering dark matter and dark

Functionalism And Funtionalism In The Holocaust
Introduction Functionalism versus intentionalism is a long lasting debate originating from the end of
World War Two in 1945. It analyses the Third Reich and the way it s leaders approached foreign
policy at the time, mainly concerning the Holocaust. There are two dominant theories to the
background behind the horrific events of the Holocaust that took lives of 6 million Jews and millions
of other ethnic minorities. Historians have ever since searched for evidence of the reasons behind
these abominations executed by Adolf Hitler, was solely Hitler behind the Holocaust or was it the men
working for his regime? In this essay I will analyse the evidence in favor for both of the theories
suggested in the question and the evidence produced to support them, as well as the views of the
historians at that time and now. There are two competing theories functionalist and intentionalism,
however the main difficulty occurs considering the fact that there is lack of evidence on the main
perpetrator behind the Jewish question (Draper, 1999, p.14). Since no single Führerbefehl (order from
the Führer) has ever been found, or is ever likely to be found, historians have debated the centrality of
Hitler to the development of Nazi Jewish policy (Stone, 2004, p.2) Functionalism Theory of
functionalism was greatly contributed by Marxist historian Timothy Mason, whose views shined light
off of Hitler being the sole mastermind behind the Holocaust, and towards the Nazi organization

Jorge Luis Borrges Essay
In Ficcionnes, a novel written as a collection of short stories, the author, Jorge Luis Borges has a
unique way of writing in which he incorporates elements of mystery, imagination, and a certain depth
of thinking. In order to fully grasp and dissect the prompt, the essay will focus on his specific motives
that is a common theme throughout several works of his that are fantasy, dreams, and imagination.
Two stories in which these elements were the overarching theme and focus were, The South and The
Secret Miracle , The South , having a potential alternate ending where the whole last half of the story
itself was a dream, and The Secret Miracle including this fantasy when the protagonist wrote the rest
of his play in his had with the year that God had granted him between the second the guns were shot to

Dahlmann hated himself in minute detail: he hated his identity, his bodily necessities, his humiliation,
the beard which bristled upon his face.... Dahlmann dissolved in tears of self pity for his fate. He
decided at this moment that if he left he would live his life to the fullest and actually go to the south,
which he did. While Borges was first entering the south he recalled a restaurant with a cat and went
there, he notes as petting the cat that his contact was an illusion and that the two beings, the man and
cat, were as good as separated by a glass this was another indicator at the alternate reality he was
facing in his head. Borges notes in the restaurant scene that the bartender knew Dahlmann and called
him by name and he stated in the text that it wasn t unusual to him. Dahlmann thought he recognized
the shopkeeper. Then he realized that he had been deceived by the man s resemblance to one of the
male nurses in the sanitarium. This would also indicate that although he had never met this man it
would not matter because it was all in his head. This dream element impacted the story

Short Term Life Insurance Essay
There are many types of insurance programs that might be available in an organizations compensation
benefits package. These insurance plans include term life insurance, universal whole life insurance,
accidental death dismemberment, and long and short term disability insurance. Some of the plans may
be purchased in conjunction with other plans and others may be better as stand alone policies. Each
employer may also have regulations on how and when the policies may be used. It is important to
understand the rules and costs of each policy before purchasing one.

Why Don t Boys Play With Dolls Essay
The feminist movement has been trying to change the idea of traditional sex roles and stereotypes in
society for decades, but maybe the issue relies on society instead of biological differences. While
these biological differences and research show that there are small differences in cognitive brain
activity between the sexes, they also propose a theory that this is the way it s supposed to be (Pollitt
2549). Although these differences exist it does not mean that sexes should have permanently assigned
roles in society. Katha Pollitt, a feminist author and high profile activist wrote the essay Why Don t
Boys Play With Dolls, published in 1995 in The New York Times Magazine. In the essay, she argues
that biological determinism may reassure some adults about their present, but it is feminism, the
ideology of flexible and converging sex roles, that fits our children s future (2549). Pollitt raises
important ethical problems in her essay, gender roles and stereotyping. Throughout her essay she
provides several claims to her argument and builds credibility with her audience by using rhetorical
strategies. However, the argument also exhibits some minor flaws, which could in return limit its
persuasiveness. This analysis will identify Pollitt s three main claims and the evidence she uses to
support them. I argue that overall Pollitt provides an effective argument by building her credibility and
expanding her audience with the use of rhetorical strategies, such as ethos, pathos,

Jeremiah 17-9 Research Paper
The root of man s condition is reported in Jeremiah 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and it
is exceedingly corrupt: who can know it?
God as spoken through His prophet Jeremiah is for all intents and purposes exactly correct when
speaking of human nature. How quickly man would rather hates others than love them. Mankind is
quick to go to war over oil fields, land, and down right hate for one and another. This inescapable truth
is seen in today s headlines which are filled with atrocities of man against man.
With today s social media, some people are so blood thirsty that they see horrid be headings and mass
murder scenes as entertainment. Further, there are those that make their own videos of daredevil acts,

fathers killing mothers. With our technological age we have violent cyber bullying, with some so
ridiculed and abused that they find the only way out is to commit suicide. Unquestionably our society
has become victim to vicious and deplorable pedophiles that torture, molest, and even kill our precious
children. Leaving behind bereaving families with no answers. In the final analysis, these types of

Archetypal Journey In Little Miss Sunshine And As I Lay Dying
Seven year old Olive Hoover gets a call saying she has qualified for a pageant in California. The entire
family comes together and sets off from Albuquerque to the Little Miss Sunshine pageant. Her family,
which consists of her mother Sheryl, her father, Richard who is a motivational speaker, brother
Dwayne who is quiet, her grandfather Edwin, who has trained her for the pageant, and her uncle Frank
who just came who from attempting to kill himself. On their journey, they face difficulties that
challenge them on completing their journey. The film, Little Miss Sunshine, is an effective modern
interpretation of the archetypal journey, modeled in As I Lay Dying, because of its use of situational
and character archetypes. The situational archetype ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The hero of this film is the father, Richard Hoover. his purpose for going on this journey is to change.
He has put his work life in front of his family, and through this his goal is to get closer to his family. In
comparison to our model, he is most similar to Jewel Bundren. Both characters are abusive towards
their family, one of the strongest members, and something is above their family; for Jewel it is his
horse, and as stated earlier, Richard it is his job (Typeset World). Sheryl Hoover can be looked at as a
shape shifter, in relation to her loving her husband, but then at times be completely frustrated with him
and wanting a divorce (Archetypes). She is most relatable to Anse Bundren, the father of the Bundren
s. Both of them are quite and can never stick with their decisions. Both of them promised their family
members, and also take their children on their crazy journey. Looking at Olive Hoover, she would be
considered the child since she is innocent and completely unaware of her surrounding, like when Stan
attempted to kill himself (Character Archetypes). Olive is quite similar to the youngest Bundren,
Vardaman. Both children are innocent and are naive to what is going on in their lives. For example,
Olive s innocence is shown when she asks about Stan s bandages; she says, Why did you want to kill
yourself unaware of his situation (Little Miss Sunshine Script). This is similar to Vardaman asking
Why ain t I a town boy since he is not cognisant of the outside world (Faulkner 66). One of the most
closely related characters in Little Miss Sunshine and our archetypal model, As I Lay Dying, is
Grandpa Edwin Hoover and Addie Bundren. Both are a curse to their family in their traveling (Typeset
World). They would both be considered the world; they are showing the an ending of a cycle of life ,
passing away, and

despair. The film was well received by critics and Kapoor s performance earned him several
nominations for Best Actor at a number of award ceremonies, including Filmfare. Rajeev Masand
from CNN IBN noted, Despite the risk of being overshadowed by Kareena, his co star in the film,
Shahid Kapur leaves an indelible impression with a performance that is understated and mature, and
indeed the perfect foil to Kareena s boisterousness. [14] Kapoor then appeared in the Aziz Mirza
directed film, Kismat Konnection (2008), opposite Vidya Balan. The film was a semi hit at the box
office.[15] In 2009, Kapoor portrayed the dual role of twins Charlie and Guddu in the caper thriller,
Kaminey. Directed by Vishal Bhardwaj, the film was a critical and commercial success and received
mostly positive reviews. Kapoor s performance was also critically acclaimed. Rajeev Masand from

President Franklin D. Roosevelt And The Great Depression...
In the beginning of the United States, government pioneers generally abstained from managing
business. As the twentieth century drew closer, in any case, the union of U.S. industry into
progressively intense enterprises prodded government intercession to ensure little organizations and
purchasers. In 1890, Congress authorized the Sherman Antitrust Act, a law intended to reestablish
rivalry and free endeavor by separating imposing business models. In 1906, it passed laws to
guarantee that sustenance and medications were effectively named and that meat was investigated
before being sold. In 1913, the administration set up another government managing an account
framework, the Federal Reserve, to direct the country s cash supply and to place a few controls on
saving money exercises.
The biggest changes in the administration s part happened amid the New Deal, President Franklin D.
Roosevelt s reaction to the Great Depression. Amid this period in the 1930s, the United States
persevered through the most noticeably awful business emergency and the most noteworthy rate of
unemployment in its history. Numerous Americans presumed that free private enterprise had fizzled.
So they looked to government to straightforwardness hardships and lessen what had all the earmarks
of being self dangerous rivalry. Roosevelt and the Congress instituted a large group of new laws that
gave government the ability to mediate in the economy. In addition to other things, these laws
managed offers of

As the author moved from locale to locale she identified a variety of recurring hardships faced by the working poor. The chief concern for many was housing. Finding and maintaining economical housing was the principal source of disruption in their lives. For many of the working poor it s not uncommon to spend more than 50% of income on housing. These leaves a scarce amount of money left over for anything else and creates a situation where the person is always worried about losing their shelter. • 24. Research Paper On Grave s Disease Solange Wright Mr. O Donnell Bio Society November 29, 2016 Grave s Disease is an autoimmune disease that affects the thyroid and its hormone production. Normally, a healthy immune system releases antibodies that are designed to attack bacteria and viruses. In addition to antibodies, the thyroid creates hormones that regulate overall hormone production. With Grave s Disease, the immune system releases antibodies that imitate these thyroid hormones; this leads to overproduction of hormones, or hyperthyroidism. Doctors are not sure as to what exactly causes Grave s disease, but it is speculated that factors such as age play a role; as in, younger people are typically more prone to this illness. Its symptoms include anxiety; sweating; heart ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is often the first resort for doctors when deciding how to treat their patient. First, a test is administered to determine the appropriate dosage for the individual. This is done by intaking a small quantity of the radioactive iodine, and seeing how the thyroid reacts to it. The more iodine the thyroid absorbs, the smaller the prescribed dosage will be. The drug is taken via pill, and is absorbed only by the thyroid cells; thus, no other cells will be affected by the drug s radiation. Once ingested, the radiation immediately destroys almost all of the thyroid cells. This form of treatment may sound flawless, but it is not certain. There are numerous risks associated with radioactive iodine therapy. The most common would be hypothyroidism, which is the exact opposite of Grave s disease. Instead of your thyroid overproducing hormones, the opposite occurs: not enough hormones are produced for the body to metabolize. This results in patients having to take thyroid replacement therapy for the rest of their lives ( Radioactive Iodine for Hyperthyroidism par. 10). Expecting mother also cannot use RAI because the radiation can damage the fetus thyroid, which can have a negative effect on its growth and development. In addition to RAI being risky, it is also not the most efficacious treatment option. It can typically take half a year to successfully eliminate the defective ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 27. My Interview with a Jewish Friend Essay examples Introduction of the religion The religion I decided to do this interview on is Judaism. I have always been interested in this religion and was ready to learn more. One of the three great monotheistic world religions, Judaism began as the faith of the ancient Hebrews, and its sacred text is the Hebrew Bible, particularly the Torah. Fundamental to Judaism is the belief that the people of Israel are God s chosen people, who must serve as a light for other nations. God made a covenant first with Abraham, then renewed it with Isaac, Jacob, and Moses. The worship of Yahweh (God) was centered in Jerusalem from the time of David. What different methods of worship does your religion practice? Answer: Traditionally, Jews use certain rituals on a daily basis, too. Some of these are: putting on the Tallit (a prayer shawl) and Tefillin (phylacteries, which are small leather boxes containing verses from the Bible that remind Jews of their duties one worn on the forehead and one on the arm), praying three times a day, and keeping the dietary laws called Kashrut. 4. Is there a particular day you practice these methods of worship? Answer: Yes of course. Jews have long revered Shabbat, the Sabbath, as a taste of the world to come, a time of rest, of peace, and of contentment. From sundown on Friday night until sundown on Saturday night, observant Jews set aside time to pray and study a day to refrain from work and everyday cares. 5. What is your place of worship called? 6. What are the important holidays and traditions of this religion? Answer: Yes a few are: the high holy days, sukkot, hannukkah, pesach, the omer period, Shavuot, and tishah. 7. How has religion shaped your life? Answer: Of course it has. Being Jewish is what I am. I was raised this way, left this way of life and came back. I love being the Jewish man I am. 8. What are the challenges, if ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 28. Women, Islamic, And Saudi Arabian Women The topic that stood out to me the most would be the impact of ethnicity amongst women. It is amazing how much being a woman and being part of a certain ethnicity can have such an impact on a woman s life. It is already hard enough for woman to been seen as equal, just imagine what it is like being a woman of a particular ethnicity. The two articles that we discussed in class are about Filipino, Islamic, and Saudi Arabian women. Filipino, Islamic, and Saudi Arabian women share some things in common when it comes to their everyday lives and cultures. Within the Philippine culture, men and women have very different duties in life. Men are supposed to be the worker of the house and the women stay in and take care of the family. The ... Another thing that Filipina woman go through is not having the privileges like other boys, especially their brothers. The author states, parents seldom allowed their daughters to date, to stay out late, to spend the night at a friend s house, or to take an out of town trip (Espiritu, p. 16). Therefore, the Filipino girls do not get to experience what it is like to be a teenager. The girls could experience not being able to be social because of their parents keeping them so distanced from the real world. This could damage them when they become adults. Another thing that stood out was the same parents that are stopping their daughter from doing all these things, are not stopping their son, who could be even younger than the daughter. This makes absolutely no sense because why would someone let a younger child do something over the older child? A part of the article that stood out to me was although many parents discourage or forbid dating for daughter, they still fully expect them to fulfill their traditional roles as women: to marry and have children (Espiritu, p. 17). This quote shows that Filipino woman do not have choices in life. It is like the parents are being hypocrites because they are telling them not to do one thing but then expect them to have a family. Prometheus created man out of clay, yet the people looked up to Zeus for motivation and inspiration. However, Zeus was not always a role model, committing adultery against his wife, Hera, and letting his anger get the best of him in cases of lashing out against the people of Earth and the other gods. I who irretrievably destroyed thee by destroying all thou lovest. Alas! He is cold, he cannot answer me (Shelley, 221). In the following pages, however, the monster admits to having shown a lack of compassion during the murders of Henry Clerval and Victor s wife, Elizabeth. Even though the monster seems to be mindlessly killing people close to Victor, one can argue that his rampage was based on humanity. Before the murders, the creature simply seeks a female companion from his creator, to be able to, interchange of those sympathies necessary for [its] being (Shelley, 147). While Victor did initially comply, he throws the idea out the window, and as a result, the monster experiences true heartbreak. This heartbreak leads the monster to commit the crimes that it did, inflicting a fairly equal amount of pain upon Frankenstein compared to the suffering inflicted on the monster. For example, Victor promotes the suffering by taking away the companion and creating the creature in a wretched form. Furthermore, the monster is extremely young, so like a child crying over a bump on a table, Frankenstein s creation is overreacting to a situation that he has never encountered before. He solely acts out of a long for humanity and equality in the world he was forced into. This is seen on page 222, when Victor s monster says to Robert Walton, he sought his own enjoyment in feelings and passions form the indulgence of which I was forever barred, then impotent envy and bitter indignation filled me with an insatiable thirst for vengeance (Shelley, ... Characteristics Of Paul Morel As A Modern Man An Archetype can be defined as a primitive set of qualities and attribute, inherited deep in the subconscious that can serve as a recurring theme or motif in Literature and Art. To determine if Paul Morel is an archetypal modern man, one must consider: What makes a modern man? Is it the spiritual hollowness that Eliot talks about? Is it the embodiment of Freud s psychoanalytic theories? Could it be the rugged product of the harsh post Victorian industrialized lifestyle? In Sons and Lovers, Lawrence focuses on the personal development of Paul Morel as he grows up with an alcoholic and emotionally unstable father, Walter Morel, and his mother, Gertrude Morel, with who he develops a strong bond. It governs his ambitions, his work, his plans for the future and his love life. What makes Paul an interesting character in modernist literature is his psyche. Hubble allowed scientists to observe how dark matter bends the light of galaxies that are far away through gravitational lensing. Scientists could then theorize about the existence of dark matter. Due to Hubble s unique viewpoint, scientists could also map where dark matter is located and how it is distributed in galaxies. Hubble also played a large role in the discovery of dark energy. Dark energy is a repulsive force that causes the universe to expand at a faster and faster rate. Hubble not only detected the presence of dark energy, but also that it has been around since almost the beginning of the universe. It was used to look back in time at supernovae, which are used to trace how the universe expanded. Only Hubble could be used for this task because telescopes on the ground would be unable to see these very distant and faint supernovae. Hubble changed the field of astronomy through its part in discovering dark matter and dark ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 44. Functionalism And Funtionalism In The Holocaust Introduction Functionalism versus intentionalism is a long lasting debate originating from the end of World War Two in 1945. It analyses the Third Reich and the way it s leaders approached foreign policy at the time, mainly concerning the Holocaust. There are two dominant theories to the background behind the horrific events of the Holocaust that took lives of 6 million Jews and millions of other ethnic minorities. Historians have ever since searched for evidence of the reasons behind these abominations executed by Adolf Hitler, was solely Hitler behind the Holocaust or was it the men working for his regime? In this essay I will analyse the evidence in favor for both of the theories suggested in the question and the evidence produced to support them, as well as the views of the historians at that time and now. There are two competing theories functionalist and intentionalism, however the main difficulty occurs considering the fact that there is lack of evidence on the main perpetrator behind the Jewish question (Draper, 1999, p.14). Since no single Führerbefehl (order from the Führer) has ever been found, or is ever likely to be found, historians have debated the centrality of Hitler to the development of Nazi Jewish policy (Stone, 2004, p.2) Functionalism Theory of functionalism was greatly contributed by Marxist historian Timothy Mason, whose views shined light off of Hitler being the sole mastermind behind the Holocaust, and towards the Nazi organization ... Dahlmann dissolved in tears of self pity for his fate. He decided at this moment that if he left he would live his life to the fullest and actually go to the south, which he did. While Borges was first entering the south he recalled a restaurant with a cat and went there, he notes as petting the cat that his contact was an illusion and that the two beings, the man and cat, were as good as separated by a glass this was another indicator at the alternate reality he was facing in his head. Borges notes in the restaurant scene that the bartender knew Dahlmann and called him by name and he stated in the text that it wasn t unusual to him. Dahlmann thought he recognized the shopkeeper. Then he realized that he had been deceived by the man s resemblance to one of the male nurses in the sanitarium. This would also indicate that although he had never met this man it would not matter because it was all in his head. This dream element impacted the story ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 47. Why Don t Boys Play With Dolls Essay The feminist movement has been trying to change the idea of traditional sex roles and stereotypes in society for decades, but maybe the issue relies on society instead of biological differences. While these biological differences and research show that there are small differences in cognitive brain activity between the sexes, they also propose a theory that this is the way it s supposed to be (Pollitt 2549). Although these differences exist it does not mean that sexes should have permanently assigned roles in society. Katha Pollitt, a feminist author and high profile activist wrote the essay Why Don t Boys Play With Dolls, published in 1995 in The New York Times Magazine. In the essay, she argues that biological determinism may reassure some adults about their present, but it is feminism, the ideology of flexible and converging sex roles, that fits our children s future (2549). Pollitt raises important ethical problems in her essay, gender roles and stereotyping. Throughout her essay she provides several claims to her argument and builds credibility with her audience by using rhetorical strategies. However, the argument also exhibits some minor flaws, which could in return limit its persuasiveness. This analysis will identify Pollitt s three main claims and the evidence she uses to support them. I argue that overall Pollitt provides an effective argument by building her credibility and expanding her audience with the use of rhetorical strategies, such as ethos, pathos, ... Both characters are abusive towards their family, one of the strongest members, and something is above their family; for Jewel it is his horse, and as stated earlier, Richard it is his job (Typeset World). Sheryl Hoover can be looked at as a shape shifter, in relation to her loving her husband, but then at times be completely frustrated with him and wanting a divorce (Archetypes). Looking at Olive Hoover, she would be considered the child since she is innocent and completely unaware of her surrounding, like when Stan attempted to kill himself (Character Archetypes). For example, Olive s innocence is shown when she asks about Stan s bandages; she says, Why did you want to kill yourself unaware of his situation (Little Miss Sunshine Script). This is similar to Vardaman asking Why ain t I a town boy since he is not cognisant of the outside world (Faulkner 66).
