A Canticle For Leibowitz Essay
Introduction
A Canticle for Leibowitz is a post whole world destroying sci fi novel by American author Walter
M. Mill Miller, Jr. It is set in a Catholic religious community in the desert of the Southwestern
United States after a staggering atomic war; the story compasses a huge number of years as human
advancement modifies itself. The monks of the fictional Albertian Request of Leibowitz take up the
mission of protecting the surviving remainders of man s logical information until the day the
outside world is again prepared for it. This book is a mourn for humanity.
What do the Memorabilia represent? Why would the monks want to preserve it?
In the second a portion of Walter M. Mill Miller, Jr s. 1959 novel A Canticle for Leibowitz
, common
researcher Taddeo Pfardentrott is welcomed by Abbot Paulo of the ascetic Albertian Request of
Leibowitz to present his discoveries in light of Taddeo s investigation of the library of the monks.
In any case, Taddeo is indeterminate if the monks will comprehend his work, and is additionally
worried that he will insult the religious convictions of the request. Paulo, delighted, reacts, We ve

The Existence Of God By Thomas Aquinas

Robert Evans
Intro to Philosophy
The Existence of God
Thomas Aquinas was a theologian that was a priest in the 1200 s and wanted to prove that God
existed. He created many books and articles in his lifetime about God and things with the catholic
religion, but, his more famous book Summa Thelogia gave five arguments that God exists in
Articles II and III they are explained in detail. Below is my understanding of what he was saying
the works of two other man that had comments on this man. Through the arguments of these three
man I have came up with my own views and created an argument based on what they have to say.
In Article II Aquinas states why people think that God doesn t exist and goes on to destroy them
piece by piece. The first argument in Article II against God states that God does not existence
because it can not be demonstrated that he does in fact exist. He answers calmly and uses
examples from the Bible to help him with the answer and then he states what he thinks. Based on
what he stated in his example he went off of it and said that what he thinks. He states in Article II
and I quote I reply, therefore, that God s existence, and those other things of this nature that can be
known through natural reason concerning God, as is said in Rom. I., are not articles of faith, but
preambles to these articles. (Article II). He is saying that Faith is not a given thing you have to
knowledge and understanding so that you can develop faith

A Comparison Of Hills Like White Elephants And Happy Endings
Hills like White Elephants by Ernest Hemingway and Happy Endings by Margaret Atwood share a
gender oriented theme. They both show women struggling to attain equality against their male
partners. This theme is depicted through the use of symbolism, point of view and plot conflict.
Symbolically, Hills like White Elephants represents a choice. It is a life choice that can t be undone
once it is made. This choice is about whether or not Jig, the female character of the story, should
get an abortion. It supports the theme because if Jig chooses to keep the baby she is defying the
wishes of her male partner, who is simply referred to as the man, and taking a stand for women
by doing so. However it is not entirely clear what choice she makes at the end of the story. Her
only words being, I feel fine...There s nothing wrong with me. I feel fine (216). The interpretation
some people take for this is that she decided to keep the baby and chose to defy male domination.
In Happy Endings the main symbols are how the relationships end be it cheating, age, or health
complications. Cheating is symbolic of the relationship being dominated by only one person
involved in it. Age is symbolic of both partners sharing or being equal in the relationship. Lastly
health complications are a way of saying that fate, be it good or bad, can be involved, or that not
everything works out according to plan. These are all related to the idea that by placing a dominant
person in the relationship

The Machine Stops Summary
In Forster s dystopian short story The Machine Stops , the ways of communication are different
from the conventional practice. Most characters seldom communicate face to face, which is a way
of direct human contact they avoid. This leads to conflict between the characters. Vashti, Kuno s
mother, finds the conversation with Kuno a waste of time and remains unwilling to visit him until
he insists. Kuno, who seems to be a misfit in that world, wants to see his estranged mother, not
through the Machine which Vashti worships and heavily depends on. Other forms of communication
also appear, such as Vashti s monologue like lectures. The various forms of communication are
similar in the way that they usually end abruptly and unhappily. The unresolved... Show more

While Kuno asks Vashti for a visit, she instantly refuses and backs up with the reason that she
dislike[s] airships (Forster, 2) and the horrible brown earth, and the sea and the stars when it is dark
(Forster, 2), from which she get[s] no ideas (Forster, 2). By considering whether an activity allows
them to get ideas, it depicts how characters over rationalise their behaviours that should have been
done out of mere intuition. This foregrounds the theme of ideas being mechanical just like a
machine. Whereas first hand ideas and experiences are conventionally thought to provide the most
intellectual and reliable knowledge, the characters in the dystopian story value second hand ones
more, such as listening to lecture about the sea or reading the Book. That is why Vashti pulls the
window blinds in the airship to avoid seeing the scenery outside. As for Kuno, he tells Vashti that he
believes otherwise and passionately responds that he has a strong interest in looking at the
constellation. The fact that Kuno explores the surface of the earth is an excellent example of
showing his engagement in collecting first hand

The Cause And Causes Of The Second World War
In 1939, the Second World War began as Germany attacked Poland. Britain and France declared
war on Germany in response to Germany s invasion of Poland. The Second World War was
composed of two main powers. One was the Axis Powers which included Germany, Italy, and
Japan. The other was the Allied Powers which included Britain, France, the United States, the
Soviet Union and etc. Germany s attack on Soviet Union and Japan s invasion of Pearl Harbor
escalated the war and the war became more intensified on a world scale. Because of the Second
World War, a lot of countries and people were sacrificed. In addition, all the things concerning
politics, economy, society, culture , etc changed due to this war. Historians always argue about
historical events, especially argue about the cause and effect. In the case of the Second World
War, most of the historians blame for the war on Hitler. They agree that the Second World War
occurred on account of Hitler s ambition of ruling the world and his wrong idea devastated the
whole world. They thought that Hitler made a plan to conquer Europe or the whole world, and by
instigating German people with Nazism... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Russia, The World s Largest Country
Russia, the world s largest country, is a country that is defined by it s intriguing culture, politics,
and physical geography. Let s begin with the extensive amount of geography that is Russia in
comparison to the rest of the world. Russia has the world s longest continuous coastline, which
means that there is more of the country of Russiathat touches water than any other country in the
world. The climate of Russia, however, is not the most ideal conditions as a large portion of the
country is in the Arctic climate zone in the subarctic climate zone, which means it is very cold and
has very little access to water for trading or anything else for that matter. To resolve this issue,
Russia relies heavily on access to the warm water... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
On the other hand, Russia has had a rough past in regards to the most famous Chernobyl power
plant disaster. It was noted as the worst nuclear power plant disaster in history as it took about
500,000 rescue workers to help clean up the radioactive debris and it was estimated that deaths
ranged between 30,000 and 200,000 deaths. If people did not die from this, they could have been
affected by radioactive exposure, which can cause radiation developing cancer at an early age in
children, stillbirths with being born with birth defects. This ultimately led the fallout of the city of
Kiev, where everyone was evacuated from the area and remains an empty place that lies within
Russia. It has been stated that there is still radioactive radiation that fills the air in Kiev even after
31 years of it occurring.
Russia has had an interesting upbringing in the pathway of becoming a powerful nation as it stands
today. Russia s roots started all the way back in the 8 9th century with the migrating slavic groups
including the Huns, Samaritans, Turks, and the Persians. The Mongolians were the initial group of
individuals that establish a very efficient form of authoritarian bureaucratic structure. The
Mongolians were seen as a very radical and ruthless group of people due to the destruction of many

Essay On Magnetic Field
Summer of 2017 saw UT Southwestern Medical Center make considerable strides in biotech with
the development of high frequency alternating magnetic fields to destroy bacterial films on the
surfaces of artificial joints in the body simply by heating the joints themselves. These bacterial
infections tend to be of great detriment to patients, and they prove impeccably resilient to
antibiotics. Since then, that same research has been furthered to prove itself on human test subjects.
Now, the U.S. Energy Department illustrates the ability to see bacterial cells magnetic fields via
electron microscopy, which marks a milestone both for microscopy and for scientific rendering of
magnetic nano objects in liquid and bacterial cell magnetic fields... Show more content on

When we look at samples prepared in the conventional way, we have to make many assumptions
about their properties based on their final state, but with the new technique, we can now observe
these processes first hand, Prozorov explains. It can help us understand the dynamics of
macromolecule aggregation, nanoparticle self assembly, and the effects of electric and magnetic
fields on that process. This bears significant implications for biotechnological applications,
especially in light of recent research regarding the use of magnetic heating to eradicate bacteria
from surfaces within the human body.
People get metal parts implanted all the time to compensate for injuries or very old body parts.
These pieces range from metal plates to pins to artificial joints, but they all serve relatively similar
purposes holding bones together. The problem that comes from this from time to time is that
bacteria inside a patient s body eventually find these metal surfaces and seek refuge on or in them.
Ordinarily, physicians recommend surgery to get rid of those bacteria, but new research suggests
that surgery may no longer be necessary; rather, it may be possible to get the same result with the
non invasive alternative of magnetic heating.
These bacteria can be very difficult to remove because they form biofilms thin sheets that form a
viscous, protective membrane of sorts like plaque on enamel. Even though this only happens to

Personal Interest Project Analysis
The way society shapes the way that individuals see people who have a disability is what my
Personal Interest Project is about. It is on the way that individuals see people with a disability
and whether or not this is base around other people in society s ideas. People often come to
conclusions based on family expectations and their views towards something, views within the
community for example peers impact thoughts and values and play a major role in each others
views. The reason for this topic choice is due to having a huge interest in this field and wanting to
do something that was different and that would relate across a broad number of my subjects. This
PIP is going to show how society impacts on people s thoughts and changes the way things are seen
and thought about. Society has a strong impact on what... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These included an interview and I also handed out questionnaires as part of my primary research.
As for my secondary research I conducted analysis of data from varied resources such as the
internet, magazines and previous PIP s. The reason for conducting an interview was so that I
was able to get emotions, body language, thoughts and opinions first hand from a parent/carer s
point of view. This information however may be slightly bias because they were her daughters
therefore I had to go through it very carefully being aware of this. An interview was a good
choice because it gave me an idea of what both the carer and the dependent go through.
Questionnaires were chosen because it is easy to give out, collect and collate. They can give
bulk statistical responses which is what was needed. The responses were quite helpful and it was
a very sufficient way to gather data. Data analysis was used for a lot of this PIP because I needed
to gather information about the different types of disabilities that people can have. It was also
needed to ensure a good quality of of information and to ensure that my information is not

Kant’s Practical Imperative in the Film The Insider Essay
This principle is referred to as Kant s practical imperative and is an important principle for an
ethical system which says that each human being is an end in himself or herself. No human being
should be thought of or used merely as a means for someone else end. Dr. Jeffrey Wigand the main
protagonist of The Insiderportrays himself to be a conflicted individual as he makes decisions
throughout the movie. Against an undetermined future, he ruminates about what he knows is right
for example, receiving threats, the phone ringing at odd hours. He makes most of his decisions by
weighing the cost and benefits, which may be referred to as Kant s principle the end justifies the

The Kantian perspective would consider Lowell actions to be unethical, as he encourage another
person to break his promise for a greater of social good. Lowell knows the extent of the pleasure,
but not the pain. The benefits of his encouragement would uphold the honor of 60 minutes and CBS
news, protecting the public against harm. The disadvantages and the cost would result in Wigand
and his family losing all benefits from the agreement. The possible lawsuit faced against CBS and
damages to the tobacco industry and its employees. If he does not encourage Wigand, its just result
in vice versa, he would receive the benefits and the tobacco industry and employees are protected. It
would costs harm to public if they do not know the truth. In conclusion it can be seen that both
Wigand and Bergman used each other as means to one anothers end.
Not actually being in his position it would be difficult to decide to what my actual emotions
would be, based on the fact that I would be putting my family in danger to protect the public. I
would have probably done the same as it would be my moral obligation and the right thing to do.
Kant s duty based ethics says that some acts are wrong or right because of the things or situations
that are related and people have a duty to act in accordance, regardless of the good or bad
consequences that may be produced.
Dr. Wigand decision is an example of goodwill as he disregarded the concern of consequences of

The Shock Is A Life Threatening Condition Of Circulatory...
Shock is a life threatening condition of circulatory failure that most commonly presents with
hypotension. The effects of shock are initially reversible but can rapidly become irreversible,
resulting in multi organ failure (MOF) and death. when a patient present with undifferentiated
hypotension, it is important that the clinician rapidly identify the aetiology so that appropriate
therapy can be administered to prevent MOF and death (Vincent, 2013).
Assessment of hemodynamic status in a shock state remains a challenging issue in Emergency
Medicine. Early recognition and appropriate treatment of shock have been shown to decrease
mortality (Moore and Copel, 2011; Volpicelli, 2011). In case of medical emergencies there may not
be enough time to perform detailed diagnostic procedures and eliminating any imminently life
threatening conditions from the possibilities is always challenging in a busy ED.
Shock is defined as circulatory insufficiency that leads to under perfusion of organs in the body,
which can result in multi organ failure. Undifferentiated shock refers to the situation where shock is
recognized, but the cause is unclear. In general shock can be classified into 4 subtypes (Tintinalli,
2010):
Hypovolemic shock this happens as a result of severe blood or fluid loss as can be seen in
haemorrhage, rupture of aortic aneurysm, severe diarrhoea, vomiting.
Distributive shock this type of shock happens when the core intravascular volume is insufficient to

Ethos Pathos In Pepsi
Advertisements are everywhere; while driving you may see them on a billboard, while watching tv,
looking through your phone, and even while watching your favorite youtuber. Advertisements have
been around so long that the techniques behind them are down to a science. Advertisements have
been around for so long that they are as apart of our culture as much as television or music. Many
times, advertisements will use certain strategies in order to sell their product. The most common
being Aristotle s three modes of persuasionethos, logos, and pathos. Ethos is an appeal to someone
s ethics, their character, it is used to convince the audience of the author s credibility. The third
appeal, pathos, is an appeal to the audiences emotion. These strategies have been proven to work
very well, so what if an advertisement implemented many of these strategies and still received
backlash or wasn t well received. Well, Pepsi found themselves in that position with their
advertisement featuring Kendall Jenner. The advertisement used appeals to pathos, ethos, and even
implemented many parts of North American culture, so why did it receive so much backlash? By
analyzing pathos, and ethos, I will determine why it received much backlash despite having
everything a commercial should.
The advertisement begins with a Pepsi can being opened with the song Lions by Skip Marley
playing in the background. The camera then cuts to a man on the roof playing a violin. The camera

First-Grade Classroom Evaluation
This first grade classroom has a wealth of printed text, both on the walls and on bookshelves and
within technology. While not always apparent at first glance, a little digging produced resources for
both the teacher and students. While to my eyes, these appeared hidden away, the teacher was
quickly able to point me in the direction of the resources.
In general, this first grade classroom rated outstanding with a score of 10/15. The outstanding
rating was given as an indication of a classroom full of written text which is presented in multiple
modalities. The written text is readily available as a resource for students who still need that extra
assistance when applying new strategies for reading and writing.
The classroom rated a score of 2/15 for the adequate category and 3/15 for the inadequate
category. To be fair, the score for the inadequate category is, in part, more a reflection of the grade
level of students. Specifically, textbooks are not used with first grade other than as a resource for
math worksheets. Additionally, many lower grade teachers at this school have not recognized the
usefulness and impact of non fiction periodicals for use with their students. The lower scoring

American Farms Great Again Is The Motto For Burlington...
Research Paper
Make American farms great again is the motto for Burlington Robotics. Autonomous means:
controlled by a computer without a need for human intervention. United States farmers compete
globally for market share and Burlington Robotics wants to provide the machines needed to reach
the greatest potential. The next revolution in farming will be autonomous farming. Bet the Farm,
Best Robotics game for 2016 is a great example of the changes that are occurring in agriculture.
Farmers concerns with the autonomous tractor revolution include: safety, command and control,
laborers, efficiency and cost.
Safety
Autonomous farming could reduce farm accidents. According to the United States Department of
Labor approximately 300 fatalities occur each year due to vehicular incidents on the farm.
Autonomous farm machinery could decrease these numbers. Make an automated farm a safer place
with Vantage (copyright) obstacle detection and avoidance. Equip robotic farm vehicles with the
ability to see and safely react to unexpected hazards.
The first step in environmental awareness, this specialized LiDAR sensor produces a 3D area
readout that identifies potential obstacles and integrates seamlessly with Vantage.

ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS
1. Cash normally consists of coins and currency on hand, bank deposits, and various kinds of
orders for cash such as bank checks, money orders, travelers checks, demand bills of exchange,
bank drafts, and cashiers checks. Balances on deposit in banks which are subject to immediate

Savings accounts, time certificates of deposit, and time deposits fall in this latter category. Unless

Satirical Comedy In Catch 22 By Joseph Heller
Life has its funny way or running circles around itself; no matter what happens, there is always a
catch. In Catch 22, Joseph Heller demonstrates the catch that is Catch 22 by creating a satirical
comedy of one of the worst times in the history of man and tormenting Yossarian with the unfair
life problems of a bomber pilot that are out of his hands to decide, leaving him to fend for himself
amongst the sea of dangers awaiting to take his life (and others) until finally he sees freedom and
escapes from his officers and very angry whore. Yossarianhas avoided his missions for as long as
he could in the confines of war. He is found first in a hospital pretending to have a liver disease
and having symptoms related to this illness. He naturally runs a slightly elevated temperature,
making his story somewhat more believable to the displeased nurses who have to take care of
his every day. However, being in the hospital with no entertainment can be catastrophic to one s
mind. To solve this dilemma, Yossarian, in charge of censoring the letters, began a war with
words. He would remove subjects, verbs, adverbs, and other important elements of the letters; he
even added the name Washington Irving and Irving Washington. This would have caused chaos
for families back home who want to speak to their loved ones. Most of the times, there are only a
couple of words left and not even their loved one s name on the letters. It would be easy to think
that this is a casual, forgettable

The Role Of Women In Gothic Literature
Women in the 18th and 19th century were expected to follow the orders of the males in their
lives. They were forced into arranged marriages to connect families in a pursuit for social power
and they were expected to abide by anything the males in their lives asked of them. Free will was
nonexistent. Much gothic literature effectively highlights the women s expected role of the time.
However, another aspect that seems to surface in gothic literature is whenever there is a woman
who is not following the social norms, they seem to be the driving conflict behind the plotline and
ultimately lead to any present happy ending. Castle of Otranto provides a prime example of the
contrasting roles of the women. Multiple times Hippolita is described... Show more content on

Manfred throws around death threats and searching for the girl mercilessly pushing everyone
out of the way. Manfred, on several accounts, attempts to kill Theodore for reasons related to
Isabella. Working against Manfred s cause, Theodore facilitates Isabella s escape from the castle
and Manfred wants to kill him for it. As if Manfred searching for her wasn t enough she also has
her father racing against Manfred to find her thus causing more tension as they compete. Since
Isabella ran away and now has all these people out for her, Theodore is protecting her and ends
up fighting off a knight and wounding him. That knight, however, was Isabella s father, so
indirectly; Isabella s actions caused her father to be wounded. Isabella s simple decision to take
the path of self happiness over the typical submissive woman caused all of these events in the
story. Her aversion from her social expectations is what made this story one of excitement and
not a story of the typical workings of society. Isabella, following what she believed would make
her happy, drove the story into one of more suspense and conflict. Walpole, by making Isabella the
main driving force behind the plotline, was attempting to make a statement about the niches
women of the time were supposed to fill in the 18th and 19th century. He was criticizing the way
people treated women. Even though so many problems arose from Isabella s actions, the problems
were all rooted in the flawed sexist system

Racial Equality In America Essay
Throughout the history of America, there has been constant problems with the quest for racial
equality. In three different time periods; early views on race, civil rights movement, and the
fight for equality in America, how race is deceived has been altered in a variety of ways. To this
day society in America has not fully accessed complete racial equality, but have furthered the
advance to achieve it in creating more laws that design equality among everyone. In early
American history there was very little racial equality. This was the time most people tried to create
ways to keep unequal treatment between the two races. For instance, to keep enforcing whites to a

To be human, means having the ability to articulate emotions and ideas that can lead to
questioning what is good and what is evil. The theme of good and evil is expressed through the
eyes of the man and the boy, who label people as either good guys or bad guys. While the boy has
a more simplistic idea of good and evil, the man has a hard time grasping the difference between
who the good guys and the bad guys are. He wonders as to what makes him any different from
the cannibal blood cults, who like them are just trying to survive. Humans have a distinct need to
try and distinguish between bad and good, even when we can t come up with a way of defining
them. In a world where there is even less of a fine line between who is good and evil, the... Show

Computer Surveillance At The Workplace Essay
An Assessment of the Impact of Computer Surveillance at the Workplace
Abstract
Computer surveillance refers to the use of computers to track the activity of individuals at the
workplace. It is a common practice especially in industries that have a large number of employees
whom they cannot monitor in person. The research will examine computer monitoring as one of the
methods which the management uses to monitor employee activity at the workplace. The
researcher will examine the advantages of computer monitoring at the workplace in detail in
relation to the legal realm, public perception and criticism. Firms store most of their data in the
computer database. In fact, many companies rely on computer networks to communicate with its
employees, stakeholders and clients.
It has been proved that computers help a business ease its activities such as record keeping,
monitoring employees and word processing among others. However, the use of computers in the
work place breeds concerns such as security threats and privacy issues. Computer systems are not
only prone to hackers but also other security issues that may compromise the company s activities
and social integrity. The research will probe into some of the advantages and disadvantages of
computer surveillance.

The atmosphere of World War II helped enhance Lee s writing because it led to the debut of
Captain America Issue #3 in 1941 with the help of Joe Simon and Jack Kirby. Lee used elements
of the war and incorporated it into his work. The controversy and calamity of the war made Lee
s Captain America a prominent figure during the war period because he epitomized anti Nazism
in an unexpressed interventionist tone (Wright 474). Lee constructed a tone towards Captain
America, which pledged to wage war against the enemies who were a threat to justice not only
home in America but also out of the country. With this tone, Lee s work had the most attention in
the World War II years. The influence of the war in Lee s work, however, led to some criticism.
The ideology that Lee s Captain America held wasn t viewed properly by political groups of other
countries at the time, but Lee found reverence from young readers who idolized patriotism. At the
time, Marvel Comics was called Timely Comics, and Timely Comics became the first comic book
company to publish anti Nazi stories. After World War II transitioned to the Cold War, America and
the Soviet Union had high tensions between one another, and the feeling of uncertainty grew

Comparing Cinderella And The Brothers Grimm
Folk tales and fairy tales are stories that have been told to us since we were kids. Some stories
are passed down from generation to generation and change along the way. Fairy tales as Cinderella
have many different variants depending on the origin of where the story was created. A Cinderella
story in the United States differs from a Cinderellastory from Russia. Cinderella is nothing of a
mere template of a specific folk tale. Cinderella is a story of a daughter who is looked down
upon by her evil stepmother and her stepsisters. Her stepmother does not allow her to go to a ball
announced by a prince, but Cinderella eventually finds a way of going and she marries the prince.
Charles Perraultand The Brothers Grimmare both famous for their variations of this story. Perrault
is famous for adding many elements to the story such as the fairy godmother and the glass slipper.
Grimm is famous for his gruesome version of Cinderella that ended in the eyes of the sisters
getting pecked out by birds. Despite both stories being similar, Perrault and Grimm show many
aspects of the story that are sparingly different.
Both stories consisted of an evil stepmother, but there is a father in both stories who play a
different role. In Perrault s version of the story, he says The poor girl bore all patiently, and dared
not complain to her father, who would have scolded her if she had done so, for his wife governed
him entirely (Perrault, 236). The father is fully controlled by the

Essay On Lucretia
The purpose of this assignment is to present a brief yet comprehensive formal analysis of the work
in question, namely, Joos van Cleve s Lucretia. The painting was completed ca. 1525 by the
Flemish artist most likely in Antwerp, where he was highly active from about 1511 until his death
in 1540. The paintingis oil on panel (75.9 x 60.6 cm) and is exemplary of the early Baroqueperiod.
The work depicts at the broadest level the suicide of the early Roman historical figure, Lucretia,
following her rape c. 510 BC by Sextus Tarquinius, son of the last Roman king. The incident bears
historical significance as it marks rising popular dissatisfaction of the Roman people with the

This image of Lucretia is not that of some mythological or religious origin, say, of a venus, for
example, part of whose appeal is the depiction of nudity without social repercussion. With respect to
the time which bore this painting, it is not unlikely that this inclination to experiment with the
female nude was in part sublimated by means of this historical subject matter, however, so say that
Lucretia s nudity is illustrated only on account of what would amount to the privilege of moral
impunity is perhaps too simple an explanation. It seems much more reasonable to posit that
Lucretia s own nudity, especially in conjunction with her opulent, indeed, what is surely very
expensive clothing (other depictions of Lucretia typically omit the inclusion of clothes altogether),
is employed by Cleve to highlight Lucretia s shame amid her wealth and regal lifestyle, her clothes
have been cleaved open, and she had been irrevocable hurt and humiliated. Whether intended by the
artist, this awkward parting of Lucretia s garments over her left shoulder and down through her
abdomen adds greatly to the desolation and pity associated with her historical figure. Ultimately,
this compositional decision serves to augment the paintings emotional

Causes, Problems, and Cures for Air Pollution
When people think of air pollution, they most immediately picture heavy smog drifting over cities
and industrial plants. This is the first and most evident form of air pollution.
To better understand the subject, we need to define the term air pollution. Air pollution is the
presence in or introduced into the air of a substance which has harmful or poisonous effects. These
substances linger and cause many adverse problems. Humans and other living creations rely on the
atmosphere for reparation. When air quality is dampened by pollution, immediate and long term
consequences take place. Pollution has caused allergies, disease, damage to crops, and even death.
It is important that we fully understand the causes, problems, and possible solutions of air pollution
so that we can make an educated decision for Earth s future.
There are many causes of air pollution. We can divide air pollutants into two categories. there are
invisible and visible air pollutants. The smog you might see lingering over a city is a good
example of visible air pollution. Invisible air pollutants are obviously not as noticeable, but they
can be just as deadly, if not more so. Examples of invisible pollutants include nitrogen oxide, sulfur
dioxide, and carbon monoxide. Air pollution can further be split into primary and secondary
pollutants. Primary pollutants, such as sulfur dioxide, are ones directly

A recently published article discussed optical techniques that exist for functional brain imaging

Imaging techniques utilize these processes to analyze functional brainactivity and produce reliable

Transforming Data and Information Overload Into A Defensible, Long Term Competitive
Advantage Introduction The proliferation of data, process and system integration technologies,
combined with the rapid advances made in analytics, Big Data, customer management and supply
chain applications are power catalysts of disruptive change in enterprise IT. Given the fact that
many legacy, 3rd party and previously disparate, disconnected systems are for the first time being
integrated together, the amount of data available for analysis and decision making has never been
greater. Add to this the torrent of data being generated daily through an enterprise s sales cycles,
social networks subscribed to, and customer interactions, and the amount of data available can
becoming quickly overwhelming. All of these dynamics taken together form the area of analytics
and enterprise software called Big Data. As tempting it is for the analytically minded to dive into
these terabytes and explore for insights and previously unknown associations in the data, to get the
most value from the investments in BigData, analytics, and enterprise applications, governance
based frameworks need to be defined that align these systems to specific strategic objectives
(McKendrick, 2012). The advent of Hadoop, H Base, MapReduce and other data analysis and
aggregation platforms and applications only become relevant in the context of strategic goals and
their accomplishment (Rogers, 2011). That is why more

Jackie And Me Character Traits
After reading Jackie and Me by Dan Gutman, I have learned that Joe Stoshack is a dynamic

dialogue, relationships, choices, and problems. In the first chapters I have learned that Joe was

One reason why Joe is dishonest, is that Joe told Mrs. Robinson (Jackie s wife) and other people

The Searchers Essay
Development and adaptation of the western genre has occurred throughout the twentieth century in
relation to the shift in context, this is still relevant. Stereotypes of a western genre and the context
are determined by the time in which the film is being produced. The time in which they were

This is similar to the opening scene of The Searchers because, both scenes are isolated, in both
movies the characters are alone or civilization is too far, they lie in the quite part of things. They
both open with a suspenseful mood. Conflict is present in the both of the films, heroes and villains
present.
Moving onto gender roles and ideas, these characteristics in genders are needed in any sort of
story to suit the values and attitudes of the people of that time. Gender stereotypes are a major
piece to the puzzle of a film. Women are generally seen as less dominant, pushovers, the cares of
everyone and that they have no independence. Whist men are seen as the more dominant,
masculine, heroes, brave and courageous. This is across all genres of movies, the girl is the
damsel in distress and the boy ends up saving her at the end of it.
These stereotypes were strongly enforced when in The Searchers the Reverend comes to the family
s house to announce that the father is setting off with him to battle the Indians. The men are looked
after, they have their coats taken off them and they are served food and drink, whereas the woman
re running around after them ensure they re satisfied, when the men set off the women collect for
them there hat and give them to the men leaving. This is a perfect example of the typical housewife
stereotype in a western film. The women were always the carers and the men were the bread
winners, this scene demonstrates the

The Importance Of Condoms
Sexual intercourse has various meanings to different people. It is typically a fun activity that
people usually experience and enjoy. Condoms are a material used to practice safe sexual
intercourse and these materials are made up of small, thin pouches made of latex (rubber), plastic
(polyurethane, nitrile, or polyisoprene) or lambskin, that cover your penis during sex and collect
semen are a thin covering, worn on the penis during sex to prevent pregnancyand sexually
transmitted diseases (PlannedParenthood 2017) . Many schools have distributed condoms to
promote safe sex in teens. About 431 public high schools in the United States distribute condoms.
Although this seems like a great idea, condoms should not be distributed in high schools because
many teens are misinformed of the procedures of using condoms, condoms are being used less by
teens, and it could affect the social, emotional and lifestyle of teenagers.
Condoms should not be distributed in high schools because teens are not well informed about the
usage and proper procedures of using a condom. Many people have been misinformed that condoms
prevent pregnancy one hundred percent of the time. However, that is not quite true. Condoms are
not 100 percent effective, they usually tend break during sexual intercourse causing a higher risk of
your partner becoming pregnant. Teens are not well informed about this fact and are often surprised
to find out later after the accident happens. Also, teens are not taught

Imagery In The Film NANOOK Of The NORTH
In the film NANOOK OF THE NORTH we are presented with imagery that for the most part had
never been seen by the majority of the population of the world. Robert Flaherty had successfully
brought an entirely unknown culture to the Western world. In the film we get to see the traditional
trading, hunting, fishing and daily tasks of an Inuit familywho for all intents and purposes are
barely touched by modern industry. Indeed, this very notion is implied in the scene where
Nanook gets to listen to a phonograph record at the trading post. The important aspect of
NANOOK OF THE NORTH is that it opened the door to what we would call documentary
filmmaking today. More importantly, the film conveys a sense of what film could be and what it
can be used for, especially in documenting historical events. What we are given are the first steps
in understanding the world around us without the added cost of exploring it ourselves. And while
it has been agreed that many of the scenes in the film were staged, it s still depicts real life Inuit
survival skills. In the seal huntingscene we get to witness Nanook s acute awareness to his natural
environment. He searches the ice for... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Since it has been revealed that Flaherty did not need to film on his toes, that is to say that the
majority of the film was staged, it allows for meticulous framing of the shot. And though this film
is considered documentary, I was still struck by the method in which Flaherty employed Joseph
Campbell s theory on the hero s journey. I felt the film followed the traditional method of
storytelling in films by establishing the isolation of the hero. We saw Nanook fishing alone,
initially hunting alone and all within the confines of this desolate, cold area. Sadly, it is understood
that the person who played the part of Nanook died alone from starvation while out on a hunting

The Life And Court Case Of Brandon Teena

Brandon Teena s Life and Court Case
Brandon Teena was a twenty one year old transgender man: a person who was born female but
who identifies as a male, who was brutally raped and murdered in 1993. After a few friends
found out he was transgender they raped him, beat him relentlessly and then later shot him at a
friends home for filling a police report. His story brought national attention to transgender people
and is the inspiration for two films and a book. His life was not in vain and he still lives on in his
story and the hearts and minds of many.
Brandon Teena was born Teena Renae Brandon in Lincoln, Nebraska in the year 1972. Brandon s
father died in a car crash before he was born ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The hate crime of Brandon brought national attention to the ideal and possibility that someone
would want to change their gender. For many people, this was their first time even hearing about
trans people and the violence against trans people. After his death, his identity was challenged and
argued even though there are quotes from him saying he felt like a man trapped inside a woman s
body. As Karina Eileraas puts it Transgender violence targets both men and women, but Brandon
Teena s case highlights its particularly brutal effects on FTM transgender individuals. Boys Don t
Cry provides a clear political incentive to integrate feminist, gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender
concerns in the analysis of violence against women...Serious risks accompany any attempt to invest
the body with particular truths about gender and sexuality . Brandon was not fully accepted in life
or given the support he needed but he is remembered in death and his story continues to inspire
many people whether trans or not.

Thoreau and Emerson
Title: Thoreau and Emerson
In today s society each individual has the ability to thinks for themselves, but the inception of
different ideas and thoughts has led to a population that s dominated by the majority . We live in a
society where a media, television and internet are the sources of manipulating a person s mind. It
also creates their mindset to determine how one think about themselves or and different view point
on topic. In this particular essay I am going to be talking about two main people who had similar
argument about how to be individual and not let government take control over your lives. Ralph
Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau were most influential writers of their time. They both
had encouraged and practice ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is not desirable to cultivate a respect for the law, so much as for the right. The only obligation
which I have a right to assume is to do at any time what I think right. It is truly enough said that a
corporation has no conscience; but a corporation of conscientious men is a corporation with a
conscience.(127) And in Self Reliance by Emerson: To believe your own thought, to believe
that what is true for you in your private heart is true for all men, that is genius. (109) To develop
into an individual is to make every choice based upon your own personal belief, no matter what
society says, and to act upon your belief . Emerson thought that all great works were products of
individualism and self reliance, claiming that: In every work of genius we recognize our own
rejected thoughts: they come back to us with a certain alienated majesty. Great works of art have
no more affecting lesson for us than this. They teach us to abide by our spontaneous impression
with good humored inflexibility then most when the whole cry of voices is on the other side.
Else, to morrow a stranger will say with masterly good sense precisely what we have thought and
felt all the time, and we shall be forced to take with shame our own opinion from another. (109)
Emerson considered individuality as doing whatever he wanted and ignoring what the people think,
which we can find in his words: What I must do is all that concerns me, not

Advantages Of Closed Primaries
The heart of democracy is the freedom to vote for any candidate one chooses. In no way should
voters be limited when participating in the democratic process. Compared to closed and open
primaries, a blanket primary allows all voters to participate, regardless of political affiliation, and
to select from a wide array of candidates, and is therefore the best primary option.
Closed primaries severely limit options for voters. Voters must register their party affiliation in
advance of the primary, which means that should a favorable candidate run on an opposing ballot
after a partisan voter registers, they would not be able to vote for that candidate. Moderate voters at
the polls must choose candidates that they do not necessarily support, simply because of party
affiliation. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although voters do not have an obligation publicly state which party they align with, they still
must only align with one party during the primary. Therefore, their ballots do not present every
possible candidate, and thus, their scope of presidential candidates is limited. The goal of a
primary should be to reflect how the state will likely vote during the general election. Blanket
primaries accomplish this by allowing voters to select the best candidate from every choice
available. This also shows how certain candidates fair in comparison with other parties candidates.
Parties still have the ability to nominate their candidate with the highest number of votes, but the
blanket primary gives more power to the voters than to political parties. Political candidates must
market themselves to voters as an aggregate in the state, and cannot rely on party affiliation to be
a driving force come primary season. Therefore, while open and blanket primaries are extremely
similar, it is the fact that blanket primaries allow more freedom for voters that makes them the

Nuclear bombs are fatal weapons engendering explosions that produce fireballs, shockwaves, and
intense radiation and later causing a mushroom cloud to form. The mushroom cloud forms from
vaporized debris and disperses that fall on earth causing environmental damage. As stated in the

Symbolism In The Book Thief
In The Book Thief, Mark Zusak uses symbolism throughout the story to create a profound meaning
behind characters actions , bringing more emotion and significance to the plot. Character Hans

the beautiful sound of Hans accordion. On september 19, 1942 Liesel experienced a very real and

The First System Of Law Enforcement
When the first settlers came over from England, they didn t have a clue on how to survive or
make their way in a new environment. To ensure their survival, they tried to use the information
that they had learned in England to help them start their way, such as scavenging for food,
collecting wood to build a shelter, and finding places to get fresh water. Over the decades,
Americans and early settlers have copied English ways of living before changing them to fit their
needs today, such as, spelling by removing the u from words like color, driving on the other side
of the road and finding our own food style that doesn t consist of tea and scones.
When the early, New England settlers came to America, they tried to set up their own ways of life
that differed from the mother country of England. For example, in 1631, the first system of law
enforcement was established. It was modeled after the British police structure, which incorporated
the watch, constables, and sheriffs in a community based police organization. While colonists
started settling into the New World, local ordinances had allowed for constables to be appointed.
The townspeople of each town created an unpaid watch made up of six watchmen, one constable,
and several volunteers who patrolled at night. This is what is written down in the National Law
Enforcement Museum for the origin of the police, but in actuality, the police system was shaped
and originated by slave patrols and night watches.

from different countries have pointed out several health issues in IT workers like ocular
discomforts, musculo skeletal problems, and metabolic syndrome. These health issues have been
attributed to their sedentary lifestyle, occupational stress and prolonged use of computer

(Shrivastava Bhopate, 2012). The most common overuse injury associated with computer use is
Carpel Tunnel syndrome (Ali Sathiyasekaran, 2006). The musculo skeletal problems are
significantly related to the number of working hours. Computer vision syndrome and
musculoskeletal problems are increasing among software professionals globally. To reduce vision
and musculo skeletal morbidities, interventions should focus on redesigning and improving
workstation ergonomics (Shrivastava Bhopate, 2012). Globally, information technology is one of
the fastest growing industry. This growth puts a lot of pressure on IT professionals to deliver
efficiently. There is constant pressure of competition, targets, meeting aggressive deadlines, rapid
obsolescence of skills, and working long hours. The job stress coupled with poor diet and low
physical activity is a perfect cocktail for morbidities in this population. A study exploring the
occupational stress, mental health and coping among IT professionals in Hyderabad, India
revealed that job stress and not job satisfaction or dissatisfaction affected the wellbeing of
employees (Rao Chandraiah, 2012). Study of IT employees of Canandian technology firms
concluded that stress, anxiety and depression are high among tech workers (Sutton, 2003). In a
cross sectional study involving software professionals from Mumbai, India, nearly half of the

General Electric s Proposed Acquisition of Honeywell
General Electric s Proposed Acquisition of Honeywell Synopsis and Objective: October 19, 2000
Honeywell s stock was up $10 due to recent merger discussions between Honeywell and United
Technologies Corporation (UTC). For every share of honeywell, UTC would pay 0.74 of its own
stock. In other words, the merge would lead to a dominant supplier company in the aerospace
market, and a strong competitor for GE. This led John F. Jack Welch Jr., GE s chair and CEO, to
call Michael Bonsignore, chair and CEO of Honeywell, to present a bid maintaining a 1:1 share for
share exchange ratio. GE won the bid against UTC and agreed to a price of 1.055 GE shares for
every share of Honeywell s, plus assumed debt. The regulatory filings were... Show more content on

How would General Electric and Honeywell s stock prices be affected by the investigation?
Anytime a company is investigated by a regulatory commision it is generally a bad thing. The
EC s investigation of the stock prices would likely have an adverse affect on the stock price and
stockholder confidence of the two companies. General Electric investors know that Jack Welch
is only on board with the company until the acquisition with Honeywell is over. This means that
General Electric will be soon losing its cash cow of a ceo and if the deal doesn t go through then
Welch will be going out on a bad note. This skepticism of whether or not the regulatory
commision will accept the merger would only add to the question of General Electric moving
forward positively in the future. Additionally, Honeywell may choose to go with UTC if the
merger with General Electric falls through. If Honeywell does in fact go with UTC then the
market position of General Electric will be compromised and their stock will once again fall. For
the Honeywell company the merger question being questioned by a regulatory commision would
likely lower their stock value as well. Investors in Honeywell may fear that the deal will fall
through and Honeywell will have wasted its resources. Should Bancroft sell its shares in
Honeywell or should they be maintained? Bancroft should sell all or at least its

This reading has introduced me to various factors in architecture regarding what it represents and
should be in society through Louis Sullivan s words.
A Terminal Station: The Masculine Implies forceful, direct, clear and straightforward,
The Feminine Implies intuitive sympathy, suavity, grace, and qualities of soothe, elevate, and
refined.
Should be easy to get in and out (efficiency)
Outward aspect of the style takes on the ambulance of architecture.
I agree, a terminal station should be able to tell us what it is and from the outside, where are the
entrances, exists, etc... This is a public figure and needs to be clear.
The Key:
Each building s external aspect represents character and it s up to us to ... Show more content on

However, the value of the building is based on subjective value and Dollar value. Sullivan
recommends that both come into play. Human nature determines the subjective value, which is
more permanent, but money value is inseparable from the affairs of life.
Roman temple:
Sullivan talked about how roman temples are place in great modern cities, at the same time having
a strenuous sight, sound, that remind the people of their god. Such a holy precinct shall be doubly
sacred to us in our reverence for this union of old and new.
An example of how a building can be highly subjective, take for example a bank. Just as we
discussed in class, a Bank wants their building to seem powerful with strong values.
Sullivan disagrees that banks in America should not resemble a Roman Temple. He believes that it
should belong to ancient romans and that banks can make as much money in any kind of bank.
Thus no need for imitations.
It was a part of Roman life and their culture, and that goes along with the Roman glory, thus
building temples all over resemble a roman death.
Taste:
It expresses a familiarity with current persons of the culture, or trends.
When an architect loses trust from the people at large, this is called weak taste.
I always consider taste as what the market demands, for example having garages in suburban
houses because of the demand for car and storage area.

This paper will demonstrate why Hume thinks accepting testimony about a miracle is unreasonable
and why he is incorrect. It will do so by first presenting Hume s argument as to why miracles are
improbable. Second it will present Hume s four main justifications for not accepting miracles.
Finally it will present how Hume s justifications are incorrect. Hume believes that accepting
testimonyabout miracles is unreasonable because there is no imperative reason to believe in
miracles. Our knowledge of miracles comes from the testimony of others, and since this a second

() Third he states that most descriptions of miracles comes from uneducated, barbarous people,
who are not refined enough to not believe such an account. () He also states that civilized societies
are not subjected to these falsehoods. Finally he states that every religion has their own accounts of
micelles that not align with the miracles of other religions. () Each religion argues against each
other and portrays other religions miracles as pharisees. The evidence of miracles counter other
religions and don t correspond. () Therefore Hume concludes that there is no rational grounds
onto which one could trust in miracles and that they are just based on religious faith, and not in
reason. Hume is incorrect in his justifications of why accepting testimonies of miracles is
unreasonable, because he presents a circular argument. Hume states that miracles have possibly
not arisen because they are a infringement of past experiences, but they are only a violation
because they have not occurred in the past. The Laws of nature are organized in a way that is
based off of past experiences. Therefore if one has experienced miracles, it is then part of their
past experiences, and most past experiences differ from one another. For example people open

Mill Miller, Jr. It is set in a Catholic religious community in the desert of the Southwestern United States after a staggering atomic war; the story compasses a huge number of years as human advancement modifies itself. The monks of the fictional Albertian Request of Leibowitz take up the mission of protecting the surviving remainders of man s logical information until the day the outside world is again prepared for it. • 4. The Existence Of God By Thomas Aquinas Kaitlyn Yinger 10 8 14 Robert Evans Intro to Philosophy The Existence of God Thomas Aquinas was a theologian that was a priest in the 1200 s and wanted to prove that God existed. He created many books and articles in his lifetime about God and things with the catholic religion, but, his more famous book Summa Thelogia gave five arguments that God exists in Articles II and III they are explained in detail. Below is my understanding of what he was saying the works of two other man that had comments on this man. Through the arguments of these three man I have came up with my own views and created an argument based on what they have to say. In Article II Aquinas states why people think that God doesn t exist and goes on to destroy them piece by piece. The first argument in Article II against God states that God does not existence because it can not be demonstrated that he does in fact exist. He answers calmly and uses examples from the Bible to help him with the answer and then he states what he thinks. Based on what he stated in his example he went off of it and said that what he thinks. He states in Article II and I quote I reply, therefore, that God s existence, and those other things of this nature that can be known through natural reason concerning God, as is said in Rom. I., are not articles of faith, but preambles to these articles. (Article II). He is saying that Faith is not a given thing you have to knowledge and understanding so that you can develop faith ... • 5. A Comparison Of Hills Like White Elephants And Happy Endings Hills like White Elephants by Ernest Hemingway and Happy Endings by Margaret Atwood share a gender oriented theme. They both show women struggling to attain equality against their male partners. This theme is depicted through the use of symbolism, point of view and plot conflict. Symbolically, Hills like White Elephants represents a choice. It is a life choice that can t be undone once it is made. This choice is about whether or not Jig, the female character of the story, should get an abortion. It supports the theme because if Jig chooses to keep the baby she is defying the wishes of her male partner, who is simply referred to as the man, and taking a stand for women by doing so. However it is not entirely clear what choice she makes at the end of the story. Her only words being, I feel fine...There s nothing wrong with me. I feel fine (216). The interpretation some people take for this is that she decided to keep the baby and chose to defy male domination. In Happy Endings the main symbols are how the relationships end be it cheating, age, or health complications. Cheating is symbolic of the relationship being dominated by only one person involved in it. Age is symbolic of both partners sharing or being equal in the relationship. Lastly health complications are a way of saying that fate, be it good or bad, can be involved, or that not everything works out according to plan. These are all related to the idea that by placing a dominant person in the relationship ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. The Machine Stops Summary In Forster s dystopian short story The Machine Stops , the ways of communication are different from the conventional practice. Most characters seldom communicate face to face, which is a way of direct human contact they avoid. This leads to conflict between the characters. Vashti, Kuno s mother, finds the conversation with Kuno a waste of time and remains unwilling to visit him until he insists. Kuno, who seems to be a misfit in that world, wants to see his estranged mother, not through the Machine which Vashti worships and heavily depends on. Other forms of communication also appear, such as Vashti s monologue like lectures. The various forms of communication are similar in the way that they usually end abruptly and unhappily. By considering whether an activity allows them to get ideas, it depicts how characters over rationalise their behaviours that should have been done out of mere intuition. This foregrounds the theme of ideas being mechanical just like a machine. Whereas first hand ideas and experiences are conventionally thought to provide the most intellectual and reliable knowledge, the characters in the dystopian story value second hand ones more, such as listening to lecture about the sea or reading the Book. That is why Vashti pulls the window blinds in the airship to avoid seeing the scenery outside. As for Kuno, he tells Vashti that he believes otherwise and passionately responds that he has a strong interest in looking at the constellation. The fact that Kuno explores the surface of the earth is an excellent example of showing his engagement in collecting first hand ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The other was the Allied Powers which included Britain, France, the United States, the Soviet Union and etc. Germany s attack on Soviet Union and Japan s invasion of Pearl Harbor escalated the war and the war became more intensified on a world scale. Because of the Second World War, a lot of countries and people were sacrificed. In addition, all the things concerning politics, economy, society, culture , etc changed due to this war. Historians always argue about historical events, especially argue about the cause and effect. In the case of the Second World War, most of the historians blame for the war on Hitler. Essay On Magnetic Field Summer of 2017 saw UT Southwestern Medical Center make considerable strides in biotech with the development of high frequency alternating magnetic fields to destroy bacterial films on the surfaces of artificial joints in the body simply by heating the joints themselves. These bacterial infections tend to be of great detriment to patients, and they prove impeccably resilient to antibiotics. Since then, that same research has been furthered to prove itself on human test subjects. Now, the U.S. Energy Department illustrates the ability to see bacterial cells magnetic fields via electron microscopy, which marks a milestone both for microscopy and for scientific rendering of magnetic nano objects in liquid and bacterial cell magnetic fields... When we look at samples prepared in the conventional way, we have to make many assumptions about their properties based on their final state, but with the new technique, we can now observe these processes first hand, Prozorov explains. It can help us understand the dynamics of macromolecule aggregation, nanoparticle self assembly, and the effects of electric and magnetic fields on that process. This bears significant implications for biotechnological applications, especially in light of recent research regarding the use of magnetic heating to eradicate bacteria from surfaces within the human body. People get metal parts implanted all the time to compensate for injuries or very old body parts. These pieces range from metal plates to pins to artificial joints, but they all serve relatively similar purposes holding bones together. The problem that comes from this from time to time is that bacteria inside a patient s body eventually find these metal surfaces and seek refuge on or in them. Ordinarily, physicians recommend surgery to get rid of those bacteria, but new research suggests that surgery may no longer be necessary; rather, it may be possible to get the same result with the non invasive alternative of magnetic heating. These bacteria can be very difficult to remove because they form biofilms thin sheets that form a viscous, protective membrane of sorts like plaque on enamel. Even though this only happens to ... The reason for this topic choice is due to having a huge interest in this field and wanting to do something that was different and that would relate across a broad number of my subjects. Dr. Jeffrey Wigand the main protagonist of The Insiderportrays himself to be a conflicted individual as he makes decisions throughout the movie. • 12. The Shock Is A Life Threatening Condition Of Circulatory... Shock is a life threatening condition of circulatory failure that most commonly presents with hypotension. The effects of shock are initially reversible but can rapidly become irreversible, resulting in multi organ failure (MOF) and death. when a patient present with undifferentiated hypotension, it is important that the clinician rapidly identify the aetiology so that appropriate therapy can be administered to prevent MOF and death (Vincent, 2013). Assessment of hemodynamic status in a shock state remains a challenging issue in Emergency Medicine. Early recognition and appropriate treatment of shock have been shown to decrease mortality (Moore and Copel, 2011; Volpicelli, 2011). In case of medical emergencies there may not be enough time to perform detailed diagnostic procedures and eliminating any imminently life threatening conditions from the possibilities is always challenging in a busy ED. Shock is defined as circulatory insufficiency that leads to under perfusion of organs in the body, which can result in multi organ failure. Undifferentiated shock refers to the situation where shock is recognized, but the cause is unclear. In general shock can be classified into 4 subtypes (Tintinalli, 2010): Hypovolemic shock this happens as a result of severe blood or fluid loss as can be seen in haemorrhage, rupture of aortic aneurysm, severe diarrhoea, vomiting. Advertisements have been around for so long that they are as apart of our culture as much as television or music. Many times, advertisements will use certain strategies in order to sell their product. The most common being Aristotle s three modes of persuasionethos, logos, and pathos. Ethos is an appeal to someone s ethics, their character, it is used to convince the audience of the author s credibility. The third appeal, pathos, is an appeal to the audiences emotion. These strategies have been proven to work very well, so what if an advertisement implemented many of these strategies and still received backlash or wasn t well received. Well, Pepsi found themselves in that position with their advertisement featuring Kendall Jenner. The advertisement used appeals to pathos, ethos, and even implemented many parts of North American culture, so why did it receive so much backlash? By analyzing pathos, and ethos, I will determine why it received much backlash despite having everything a commercial should. While to my eyes, these appeared hidden away, the teacher was quickly able to point me in the direction of the resources. In general, this first grade classroom rated outstanding with a score of 10/15. The outstanding rating was given as an indication of a classroom full of written text which is presented in multiple modalities. The written text is readily available as a resource for students who still need that extra assistance when applying new strategies for reading and writing. The classroom rated a score of 2/15 for the adequate category and 3/15 for the inadequate category. To be fair, the score for the inadequate category is, in part, more a reflection of the grade level of students. Specifically, textbooks are not used with first grade other than as a resource for math worksheets. • 18. Article by Bartley In the article by Bartley, it looks at how the West should believe in itself a little bit more and they should see how they are different. The article looks at communication and how it will insure that democracy survives and it mediates our understanding of the world. The article also looks at the clash of civilizations and how the conflicts will not be over resources but it will be over the fundamental and often irreconcilable values. This will make the U.S. and the West on the defensive. The article also talks about how there has been a lot of interest in cultural, ethnic and religious values in the Islamic fundamentalism. Balances on deposit in banks which are subject to immediate withdrawal are properly included in cash. Money market funds that provide checking account privileges may be classified as cash. • 21. Satirical Comedy In Catch 22 By Joseph Heller Life has its funny way or running circles around itself; no matter what happens, there is always a catch. In Catch 22, Joseph Heller demonstrates the catch that is Catch 22 by creating a satirical comedy of one of the worst times in the history of man and tormenting Yossarian with the unfair life problems of a bomber pilot that are out of his hands to decide, leaving him to fend for himself amongst the sea of dangers awaiting to take his life (and others) until finally he sees freedom and escapes from his officers and very angry whore. Yossarianhas avoided his missions for as long as he could in the confines of war. He is found first in a hospital pretending to have a liver disease and having symptoms related to this illness. He naturally runs a slightly elevated temperature, making his story somewhat more believable to the displeased nurses who have to take care of his every day. However, being in the hospital with no entertainment can be catastrophic to one s mind. To solve this dilemma, Yossarian, in charge of censoring the letters, began a war with words. He would remove subjects, verbs, adverbs, and other important elements of the letters; he even added the name Washington Irving and Irving Washington. This would have caused chaos for families back home who want to speak to their loved ones. Most of the times, there are only a couple of words left and not even their loved one s name on the letters. • 22. The Role Of Women In Gothic Literature Women in the 18th and 19th century were expected to follow the orders of the males in their lives. They were forced into arranged marriages to connect families in a pursuit for social power and they were expected to abide by anything the males in their lives asked of them. Free will was nonexistent. Much gothic literature effectively highlights the women s expected role of the time. However, another aspect that seems to surface in gothic literature is whenever there is a woman who is not following the social norms, they seem to be the driving conflict behind the plotline and ultimately lead to any present happy ending. Castle of Otranto provides a prime example of the contrasting roles of the women. Multiple times Hippolita is described... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As if Manfred searching for her wasn t enough she also has her father racing against Manfred to find her thus causing more tension as they compete. Since Isabella ran away and now has all these people out for her, Theodore is protecting her and ends up fighting off a knight and wounding him. That knight, however, was Isabella s father, so indirectly; Isabella s actions caused her father to be wounded. Isabella s simple decision to take the path of self happiness over the typical submissive woman caused all of these events in the story. Her aversion from her social expectations is what made this story one of excitement and not a story of the typical workings of society. Isabella, following what she believed would make her happy, drove the story into one of more suspense and conflict. Walpole, by making Isabella the main driving force behind the plotline, was attempting to make a statement about the niches women of the time were supposed to fill in the 18th and 19th century. He was criticizing the way people treated women. Even though so many problems arose from Isabella s actions, the problems were all rooted in the flawed sexist system ... The work depicts at the broadest level the suicide of the early Roman historical figure, Lucretia, following her rape c. 510 BC by Sextus Tarquinius, son of the last Roman king. It seems much more reasonable to posit that Lucretia s own nudity, especially in conjunction with her opulent, indeed, what is surely very expensive clothing (other depictions of Lucretia typically omit the inclusion of clothes altogether), is employed by Cleve to highlight Lucretia s shame amid her wealth and regal lifestyle, her clothes have been cleaved open, and she had been irrevocable hurt and humiliated. Transforming Data and Information Overload Into A Defensible, Long Term Competitive Advantage Introduction The proliferation of data, process and system integration technologies, combined with the rapid advances made in analytics, Big Data, customer management and supply chain applications are power catalysts of disruptive change in enterprise IT. Given the fact that many legacy, 3rd party and previously disparate, disconnected systems are for the first time being integrated together, the amount of data available for analysis and decision making has never been greater. Add to this the torrent of data being generated daily through an enterprise s sales cycles, social networks subscribed to, and customer interactions, and the amount of data available can becoming quickly overwhelming. All of these dynamics taken together form the area of analytics and enterprise software called Big Data. As tempting it is for the analytically minded to dive into these terabytes and explore for insights and previously unknown associations in the data, to get the most value from the investments in BigData, analytics, and enterprise applications, governance based frameworks need to be defined that align these systems to specific strategic objectives (McKendrick, 2012). Gender stereotypes are a major piece to the puzzle of a film. Women are generally seen as less dominant, pushovers, the cares of everyone and that they have no independence. Whist men are seen as the more dominant, masculine, heroes, brave and courageous. This is across all genres of movies, the girl is the damsel in distress and the boy ends up saving her at the end of it. These stereotypes were strongly enforced when in The Searchers the Reverend comes to the family s house to announce that the father is setting off with him to battle the Indians. The men are looked after, they have their coats taken off them and they are served food and drink, whereas the woman re running around after them ensure they re satisfied, when the men set off the women collect for them there hat and give them to the men leaving. This is a perfect example of the typical housewife stereotype in a western film. The women were always the carers and the men were the bread winners, this scene demonstrates the ... • 42. Imagery In The Film NANOOK Of The NORTH In the film NANOOK OF THE NORTH we are presented with imagery that for the most part had never been seen by the majority of the population of the world. Robert Flaherty had successfully brought an entirely unknown culture to the Western world. In the film we get to see the traditional trading, hunting, fishing and daily tasks of an Inuit familywho for all intents and purposes are barely touched by modern industry. Indeed, this very notion is implied in the scene where Nanook gets to listen to a phonograph record at the trading post. The important aspect of NANOOK OF THE NORTH is that it opened the door to what we would call documentary filmmaking today. More importantly, the film conveys a sense of what film could be and what it can be used for, especially in documenting historical events. What we are given are the first steps in understanding the world around us without the added cost of exploring it ourselves. And while it has been agreed that many of the scenes in the film were staged, it s still depicts real life Inuit survival skills. Since it has been revealed that Flaherty did not need to film on his toes, that is to say that the majority of the film was staged, it allows for meticulous framing of the shot. And though this film is considered documentary, I was still struck by the method in which Flaherty employed Joseph Campbell s theory on the hero s journey. I felt the film followed the traditional method of storytelling in films by establishing the isolation of the hero. We saw Nanook fishing alone, initially hunting alone and all within the confines of this desolate, cold area. Sadly, it is understood that the person who played the part of Nanook died alone from starvation while out on a hunting ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Emerson thought that all great works were products of individualism and self reliance, claiming that: In every work of genius we recognize our own rejected thoughts: they come back to us with a certain alienated majesty. Great works of art have no more affecting lesson for us than this. They teach us to abide by our spontaneous impression with good humored inflexibility then most when the whole cry of voices is on the other side. • 45. Advantages Of Closed Primaries The heart of democracy is the freedom to vote for any candidate one chooses. In no way should voters be limited when participating in the democratic process. Compared to closed and open primaries, a blanket primary allows all voters to participate, regardless of political affiliation, and to select from a wide array of candidates, and is therefore the best primary option. Closed primaries severely limit options for voters. Voters must register their party affiliation in advance of the primary, which means that should a favorable candidate run on an opposing ballot after a partisan voter registers, they would not be able to vote for that candidate. Moderate voters at the polls must choose candidates that they do not necessarily support, simply because of party affiliation. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Blanket primaries accomplish this by allowing voters to select the best candidate from every choice available. This also shows how certain candidates fair in comparison with other parties candidates. Parties still have the ability to nominate their candidate with the highest number of votes, but the blanket primary gives more power to the voters than to political parties. To ensure their survival, they tried to use the information that they had learned in England to help them start their way, such as scavenging for food, collecting wood to build a shelter, and finding places to get fresh water. Over the decades, Americans and early settlers have copied English ways of living before changing them to fit their needs today, such as, spelling by removing the u from words like color, driving on the other side of the road and finding our own food style that doesn t consist of tea and scones. When the early, New England settlers came to America, they tried to set up their own ways of life that differed from the mother country of England. For example, in 1631, the first system of law enforcement was established. It was modeled after the British police structure, which incorporated the watch, constables, and sheriffs in a community based police organization. While colonists started settling into the New World, local ordinances had allowed for constables to be appointed. The townspeople of each town created an unpaid watch made up of six watchmen, one constable, and several volunteers who patrolled at night. This is what is written down in the National Law Enforcement Museum for the origin of the police, but in actuality, the police system was shaped and originated by slave patrols and night watches. General Electric s Proposed Acquisition of Honeywell General Electric s Proposed Acquisition of Honeywell Synopsis and Objective: October 19, 2000 Honeywell s stock was up $10 due to recent merger discussions between Honeywell and United Technologies Corporation (UTC). For every share of honeywell, UTC would pay 0.74 of its own stock. In other words, the merge would lead to a dominant supplier company in the aerospace market, and a strong competitor for GE. This led John F. Jack Welch Jr., GE s chair and CEO, to call Michael Bonsignore, chair and CEO of Honeywell, to present a bid maintaining a 1:1 share for share exchange ratio. GE won the bid against UTC and agreed to a price of 1.055 GE shares for every share of Honeywell s, plus assumed debt. The regulatory filings were... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... How would General Electric and Honeywell s stock prices be affected by the investigation? Anytime a company is investigated by a regulatory commision it is generally a bad thing. The EC s investigation of the stock prices would likely have an adverse affect on the stock price and stockholder confidence of the two companies. General Electric investors know that Jack Welch is only on board with the company until the acquisition with Honeywell is over. This means that General Electric will be soon losing its cash cow of a ceo and if the deal doesn t go through then Welch will be going out on a bad note. This skepticism of whether or not the regulatory commision will accept the merger would only add to the question of General Electric moving forward positively in the future. Additionally, Honeywell may choose to go with UTC if the merger with General Electric falls through. If Honeywell does in fact go with UTC then the market position of General Electric will be compromised and their stock will once again fall. For the Honeywell company the merger question being questioned by a regulatory commision would likely lower their stock value as well. However, the value of the building is based on subjective value and Dollar value. Sullivan recommends that both come into play. Human nature determines the subjective value, which is more permanent, but money value is inseparable from the affairs of life. Roman temple: Sullivan talked about how roman temples are place in great modern cities, at the same time having a strenuous sight, sound, that remind the people of their god. Such a holy precinct shall be doubly sacred to us in our reverence for this union of old and new. An example of how a building can be highly subjective, take for example a bank. Just as we discussed in class, a Bank wants their building to seem powerful with strong values. Sullivan disagrees that banks in America should not resemble a Roman Temple. He believes that it should belong to ancient romans and that banks can make as much money in any kind of bank. Thus no need for imitations. It was a part of Roman life and their culture, and that goes along with the Roman glory, thus building temples all over resemble a roman death. Taste: It expresses a familiarity with current persons of the culture, or trends. When an architect loses trust from the people at large, this is called weak taste. I always consider taste as what the market demands, for example having garages in suburban houses because of the demand for car and storage area. A Department Store: ... It will do so by first presenting Hume s argument as to why miracles are improbable. Second it will present Hume s four main justifications for not accepting miracles. Finally it will present how Hume s justifications are incorrect. Hume believes that accepting testimonyabout miracles is unreasonable because there is no imperative reason to believe in miracles. () Each religion argues against each other and portrays other religions miracles as pharisees. The evidence of miracles counter other religions and don t correspond. () Therefore Hume concludes that there is no rational grounds onto which one could trust in miracles and that they are just based on religious faith, and not in reason. Hume states that miracles have possibly not arisen because they are a infringement of past experiences, but they are only a violation because they have not occurred in the past. The Laws of nature are organized in a way that is based off of past experiences.
