Professional Singers Enhanced Voice Quality
As a result of training, professional singers enhanced voice quality may be related to respiratory,
aerodynamic, phonatory, and resonatory/articulatory adjustments. Singers are often trained to onset
voicing at varying lung volumes (LVs) to produce voice qualities that are both perceptually pleasing
and aerodynamically efficient. The goal of most professional vocal training is determined perceptually
by a voice teacher to approach an ideal voice quality for a specific genre (e.g. opera, belt, etc.). We
examined the effects of training and task difficulty on physiological vocal behaviors and cortical
activation patterns in untrained singers and freshman vocal performance and vocal education students
(vocal students) before and after their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We tested the hypothesis that as initial LV increases, integrated airflow, PI, VOT, and AMCI will
increase in pre trained vocal students and untrained singers. In the second manuscript we examined
the effects of vocal performance training on voice onset coordination at different LVs in vocal
students. We tested the hypotheses that aerodynamic and temporal measurements will be less variable
and show decreased change between high and low LVs in the initial voice onset after the first semester
of training in first year vocal students as compared to untrained

The Battle Of Palo Alto
The Battle of Palo Alto The Battle of Palo Alto was the first major battle of the Mexican American
War. The Mexican Army of the North engaged the United States Army of Occupation on a prairie near
current day Brownsville, Texas. The conflict took place on May 8th, 1846 and was followed the next
by the Battle of Resaca de la Palma, about five miles south. Both battles took place in an area of
disputed ownership and, depending on the side, were on the only battles on American soil. Thousands
of Americans, who changed citizenship and received large tracts of land from the Mexican
government, rebelled in Texas in 1835 for several reasons, including Mexico s abolition of the locally
popular Texas provincial government and its inability to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In November of 1845, President Polk named Senator James Slidell of Louisiana as the new American
minster to Mexico (Haecker, 1994), and was sent to secretly negotiate with Mexican President Jose
Joaquin de Herrera. However, he was overthrown by General Mariano Parades y Arrillaga,
Commander of the Army of the North, who denied negotiation with the Americans and demanded the
return of the disputed area of Texas. During this time, Polk ordered General Zachary Taylor, who was
preemptively stationed at Corpus Christi, to move his unit down to Port Isabel at the mouth of the Rio
Grande and Gulf of Mexico. This only increased tensions between the two nations, which came to a
height with the construction of the U.S. Fort Texas on the north bank of the Rio Grande, opposite the
Mexican town of Matamoros, a natural choke point (Carney, 2005).
Up to the War, the American and Mexican armies were about as much the same as they were different.
The American force, renamed the U.S. Army of Occupation, was led by General Taylor who had
severed in the army since the War of 1812 and was known by his men as Old Rough and Ready. The
American Army, organized based on European models, had a strength of 8,613 men and contained
only regulars (Carney, 2005). These infantrymen enlisted for five years, and was made up of 42
percent foreign nationals, of which 50 percent were Irish. The U.S. Army

Death Cure Themes
Samuel Gomez 5 January 2016 4th Period The Unknown is Revealed The book, The Death Cure by
James Dashner, is the final novel out of the Maze Runner Trilogy. Within this book, there are many
themes that are represented. Some of these themes are perseverance, overcoming challenges, and
teamwork. All of these themes are important, because they are all interconnected. An example is with
perseverance and teamwork, almost any person can overcome any difficult challenge that comes their
way with the help of those around them. (The Death Cure and Bookrags) The first theme to be
discussed in The Death Cure is perseverance. In this book, a man made, airborne virus, with no cure,

In literature, it is usually easy for one to identify the protagonist and the antagonist. However, in this
book, such task might be quite difficult for one to do. Good and evil are completely mixed in with one
another amongst all of the characters, that one might confuse one over the other. There are too many
characters involved in this book who play both ends, that it is hard to tell who is a hero or protagonist
and who is an enemy or antagonist. An example would be Thomas accepting to meet with Janson to
perform the final, fatal trial, just to plant those explosive devices for the Right Arm. Although Janson s
desire to find a cure is viewed as good, he is responsible for the death of many people, which is why
he is consider to be evil. Good and evil are not always defined clearly in books, but when
understanding the themes of the book and the characters, one could specify which is

What It Means To Be A Political Savvy Leader
Introduction In today s ever evolving organizational settings organizations have grown in to
multifaceted labyrinth of concerns, hostilities, personal sandboxes, personalities, and sacred cows.
Techniques that were used by old titans of industry are beyond outdated and will fair very poorly in
the organizations of today. While many roads can lead to becoming a successful leader, being
politically savvy can help to smooth the path and even shorten the journey. With this paper I aim to
identify what it means to be a politically savvy leader and go into detail as to what traits one must
develop to be effective as a politically savvy leader.

Is Weber s Idea Of Economic Traditionalism
Is weber s idea of economic traditionalism analysis relevant to the study of religion?
Introduction
The core of research on religion at present is of no doubt touching Max Weber s ideas on economic
traditionalism. Weber in Solimano (2012: 42) talked about the importance of religion, especially the
Protestant ethic in economic life. By venturing into the field of sociology of religion, Weber further
succeeded in arousing many scholars interest in the study of different religions in the contemporary
world. Agbikimi (2014: 30) notes that Weber s theory of religion has to do with the interaction
between society and religion . This essay, discusses interia Webber s prominent writings on religion
which are in fact related to economic traditionalism and the study of religion. The Protestant Ethic and
the Spirit of Capitalism has been widely discussed in this essay. Berger (2010: 3) argued that it
indicates the continued relevance of Weber s analysis regarding the correlation of the religion and
economic development.
The essay concludes that, Weber s economic traditionalism analysis is to a greater extent relevant in
the study of religion today because of the sense it gives for religious significance which is linked to
economic activities and the overall image of the world. Sung Ho (2012: 1) supports this conclusion by
stating that Weber s wide ranging contributions gave critical impetus to the birth of new academic
disciplines such as sociology and public administration as

Willy Loman Dementia
Death of a Salesman: Willy Loman s Journey Through Life We are first introduced to Willy Loman at
age 60 as he returns home early from a sales trip. This is also where we get the initial glimpse of Willy
s dementia as he tells Linda, his wife, what happened during his trip. Willy s two sons, Biff and
Happy, are also present in another part of the house trying to ignore what is happening downstairs.
The first backwards slide into memory that takes place not only reinforces that Willy is dealing with
dementia, but also highlights the weak moral character he possesses. As the play continues, both the
dementia and weak moral character are highlighted in Willy s own experiences and memories along
with being reflected in both sons in separate ways. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This pattern of weak moral character is evident throughout the rest of the play in both Willy and his
sons. Biff doesn t tell anyone what he saw but essentially runs away from his family. Happy isn t

Willy in that Happy also believes he is better than everyone else as well as being a womanizer. Happy
has an easier time forgiving and excusing Willy s behavior because of the similarities in their moral
character. In contrast, every time Biff returns home Willy and he end up fighting leading to Biff

The Yellow Wallpaper Magical Realism Essay
Throughout our time in class, we ve studied a variety of authors and genres of short stories. One genre
in particular that stood out to me is magical realism. Ann Charter defines magical realism in The Story
And Its Writer: An Introduction to Short Fiction (Ninth Edition) as fiction associated with Latin
America that interweaves realistic and fantastic details, juxtaposing the marvelous with the ordinary.
Although magical realism originally began exclusively apart of Latin American history, it has
branched out and become apart of many of our favorite stories and films today. On the other end of the
spectrum is realistic fiction. These stories have a very genuine possibility of occurring in real life and

like the ghosts the narrator begins to see in The Yellow Wallpaper . Although both magical realism and

The Effects Of Norm Violation On The Perception Of Power
Investigation of the Effects of Norm Violation
On the Perception of Power Power governs our society. A powerful person is one that has authority
over others. This sense of authority relieves them of the restrictions a person of lesser power might
face, allowing them to make and break rules. The four studies conducted in Breaking the Rules to Rise
to Power: How Norm Violators Gain Power in the Eyes of Others by Gerben A. Van Kleef, Astrid C.
Homan, Catrin Finkenauer, Seval Gu ̈ndemir and Eftychia Stamkou, explores the concept of power
and transgression. Such that if powerful people are expected to act against the norm, then acting
against the norm should make people seem more powerful. The overall study focused on the

The study examined the response of 25 females and 15 men with a mean age of 19.53 on two scales.
The first scale was a 25 question questionnaire consisting of adjectives that described social
impressions of power and norm violation, which was then rated on a scale from 1 to 7 with 1 being
definitely not and 7 being definitely. The second scale asked participants to indicate the extent to
which the power statements This person is influential ; . . . has a leadership position ; . . . is in charge
of subordinates ; . . . enjoys considerable authority (Van Kleef et al., 2011), applied to the person
depicted in the scenario.
Results and Discussions Participants rated the actor that took the cup of coffee from the personnel
with a higher norm violation score than the actor that went to the bathroom. This indicated that they
recognized that the behavior of the actor that took the coffee cup was wrong. Despite that, the
participants rated that actor to be more powerful than the actor that went to the bathroom on both
scales. This gives the first evidence that violating the norm influences the perception of power (Van
Kleef et al., 2011).
Study 2: The Bookkeeper Study 2 employed a different type of norm violation to examine if the

Allusions to Nikolai V. Gogol and his short story The Overcoat permeate Jhumpa Lahiri s novel The
Namesake, beginning with Gogol s being the name the protagonist is called through most of the book.
Yet few of the reviewers of the novel mentioned Nikolai Gogol at all in their discussions of the novel,
except to describe the protagonist Gogol s loathing of his name, or to quote without comment or
explanation Dostoevski s famous line, We all came out of Gogol s Overcoat. So far, no one has looked

Our greatest hopes and our worst fears are seldom realized... Our worst fears have been realized

Depersonalization In Frrantz Fanon s Black Skin, White Man
Frantz Fanon was one of the leading theorists of postcolonialism. His career as a psychiatrist gave him
a unique perspective and allowed him to focus on the identity formation of the colonized subject and
racial injustice. Fanon s insight and view of colonization helped to further explain course material. In
Fanon s famous work Black Skin, White Mask, it became obvious how prevalent and severe racism
was at that time (Julien). According to Fanon, it led to depersonalization which was so strong that
colored people ultimately had to wear a white mask in order to survive. I believe that it s very sad that
colored people weren t allowed to fully embrace who they were are and weren t able to live peacefully
with the whites. Nobody should have to pretend to be someone whom they aren t. In Frantz Fanon s
book titled The Wretched of the Earth, Frantz Fanon asserts that decolonization will always entail
violent armed struggles between the colonized and the colonists. He makes several main points to
substantiate such a bold and sweeping claim. Fanon states, At whatever level we study decolonization,
it is quite simply the substitution of one species of mankind by another. The substitution is absolute,
total, and seamless (Fanon 1). When colonization first begins in a certain region, fights soon break out
between the natives and the colonists in hopes to preserve their land and freedom. When the natives

The Symbolism Of The Rich In The Rich Brother By Tobias Wolff
Rich, the word itself implies an abundance of one thing or another, the question is an abundance of
what. Many think of the sufficient amount of money one may have: elegant houses, luxurious cars,

Importance Of Comics And Gns In English Novels
COMICS AND GRAPHIC NOVELS A POWERFUL TOOL FOR THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE
TEACHERS IN INDIA
Chumki Biswas, Ph.D. in English
University of Mumbai
ABSTRACT While the 1940s saw the Golden Age of Comics, the Graphic Novel (GN), a sub set of
comics is now the fastest growing book genre in the US. The potential pedagogical value of Comics
and GNs have caught the attention of the English Language Teaching (ELT) community. In the last
decade many experimental language instructors have realised that Comics and GNs can be a valuable
teaching tool in the classroom that can facilitate Basic Interpersonal Communicative Skills (BICS) as
well as Intercultural Communicative Competence (ICC) in learners. Though there is substantial
research expounding the advantages of using Comics and GNs for ELT, these texts have not yet
become an integral part of school and college curricula. Against such a background this paper
highlights the reasons why it is imperative that the Indian education system should include Comics
and GNs in the language learner s curriculum. Authentic texts like Comics and GNs will help in
acquiring language proficiency by increasing learner motivation, facilitating contextual understanding,
elucidating on conversational maxims and providing input on cultural interactions. The narrative
material of Comics and GNs is so diverse that it can appeal both to young and adult learners, while
reducing affective filters and encouraging multimodal reading skills. Key Words:

Essay about Theological Virtue of Charity
Saint Thomas Aquinas is one of the people accredited for having brought theology into the limelight.
However, though theology existed long before the emergence of philosophers and fathers if the
church, individualistic drives such as those of Aquinas brought a deeper understanding into the
mysteries of theology. Modern day theology would not have gotten any bearing without the impact of
philosophers and scholars who simplified the understanding of theological concepts. While it cannot
be independently verified what the motivation was behind the interest in theology, it is clear that
theology is what it is because of the input of the philosophers and scholars (Thomas Pegis, 1997).

Aquinas sought to use the same writings and thoughts to further his agenda for making clear his
thoughts. Aristotle based his arguments on the goodness of man. He noted that the man has to develop
from within an aspect of being admired based on the characters that are not as controversial. In
essence, he meant that it is critical for people to leave a life that is a mirror to others and other
generations to come. Aquinas borrowed this concept of the understanding of man to outline the
essence of theological value of ethics. In his arguments, Aquinas noted that for one to achieve some
level of charity from the perspective of theology, two things were critical. Faith and hope, according to

The Leap By Louise Erdrich, And The Trip By Laila Lalami
Have you ever thought that three completely different stories might have something in common? It
might seem unlikely, but now you can change what you previously thought! The short stories Contents
of a Dead Man s Pockets by Jack Finney, The Leap by Louise Erdrich, and The Trip by Laila Lalami,
all have their similarities and differences on several aspects. This can be demonstrated through the
topics of setting, conflict, characters, and theme. These topics help make up the plot of each story. No
story is the same, but they can have similar messages or themes meant for the audience. Some can
argue that these three short stories are completely different, but other individuals differ. These main
elements from each story can be both, depending on one s point of view.
The setting is a good example of both similarities and differences. For instance, the setting helped
shape the story and form the plot. In Contents, the main character (Tom) opens the window in his

What Has E Recruitment Influenced The Modern Day...
To what extent has e recruitment influenced the modern day recruitment process?
Since e recruitment emerged it has dramatically impacted modern day recruitment methods.
Compared to previous traditional approaches, such as word of mouth and headhunters, e recruitment
provides a larger spectrum of opportunities for employers and job seekers. Both The Royal Bank of
Scotland (RBS) and The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) have very similar
methods of e recruitment, each bank operates an internet based resource dedicated to online
recruitment which are different in navigation and style but similar in content and purpose. LinkedIn, a
networking tool used by both organisations and professionals, is actively used in order to encourage
more potential candidates to interact with the businesses. All the aspects regarding the online
recruitment method used by RBS and HSBC are vital in attracting suitable applicants, but to what
extent has e recruitment influenced the modern day recruitment process?
A study by Ghazzawi, K and Accoumeh (2014) indicates that the e recruitment process is initiated by
the organisation recognizing a need for additional or new personnel. Following identification of this
need the job vacancy would be advertised online through the organisation s professional website, an e
recruiting website, on various social media applications or possibly all three of these outlets.
Applications would then be managed and short listed according to the person

Rhetorical Analysis Of Elle Woods
Elle Woods was the typical sorority girl while at CULA she loved shopping; her friends; and her
boyfriend, Warner. With her father s money on her side, Elle never prioritized her education or
working. She assumed her future held a marriage to Warner and life as a trophy wife; but when
Warner declares Elle a hindrance to his goals of graduating from Harvard University, she becomes
determined to do the same. Realizing no amount of money could buy admission to Harvard, Elle
works valiantly toward her goal and is accepted. As the movie comes to a close, the scene shifts to
three years later with Elle addressing her classmates as she graduates alongside Warner. Though she
does not speak excessively, Elle speaks of the passion, perseverance, and determination necessary for
success. In her short, yet effective speech; Elle uses ethos and pathos to encourage her classmates to
go forth in their law careers with courage and faith, and reminds them to never accept people as they

Elle begins her oration by using ethos to validate her credibility with her audience. Not only does her

from passion not to support his point but to illustrate to her peers that passion is a key ingredient for
being a successful attorney. By using this quote, Elle depicts her playful, investigative personality to
her peers, and reminds them of her untraditional experience at the University. Since few thought she

The Role Of The Great Power Involvement In The Middle East
Introduction The Great Power involvement in the Middle East politics often creates and contributes to
more conflicts and wars. The Middle East, a region described by Victor Israelyan as one of sharp
confrontation between the two superpowers unavoidably fell victim to such pressures. As forms of
involvement, the great powers support each respected ally with weapons, troops and even intelligence

Introduction:
This unit is designed for a twelfth grade honors British literature class. These students are extremely
gifted and will be taking the AP exam for college credit towards the end of the school year. The
students will be learning about the dynamic and static characters in the book. They will be identifying
how the dynamic character changes throughout the story and how the static characters stay the same.
This is important because these students are undergoing major changes in their lives at this point; they
will be attending college next year and taking a big leap into the somewhat unknown. I want the
students to be able to see the difference between change and what is stagnant. The students will also
be able to chart the progression, or lack thereof in the main characters. The students have prior
knowledge of this short story and have had lessons that go over dynamic and static character traits. I

Analysis Of The Thinking Out Loud Video
After watching the three videos, I had a very differing opinions about all of them. The one that stuck
out to me the most, and certainly not in a good way, was the Thinking Out Loud video. Obviously, the
interpreter was not qualified to be doing that type of work. After watching the video, the first time
with the sound on, I watched it again with the sound off to see if I could understand her signing.
Unfortunately, I did not understand what she was saying. In terms of ethical considerations, or in this
case lack thereof, there is absolutely no regard toward assuring equal access to her consumers. I do not
recall her even completing one full sentence or thought when I was watching with the sound off and
no captions. I did notice that the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

We thought the same things about the videos, especially the Thinking Out Loud one. During our

Why Is Goblin Market Still Relevant Today
The Continuing Trend of Sin in Modern Film influenced by Goblin Market
Tyler Perry s Temptation:Confessions of a Marriage Counselor is a film based on sin and shows how
sin is capable of ruining lives. The very title of the movie, explores some biblical references such as
temptation leading into sin. The main character Judith is a woman that finds herself in a very tempting
situation at work. A bachelor, who is looking for love finds interest in her although she is married. He
persuades her with gifts, and expensive things in life that she could only imagine. Judith falls deeper
and deeper into her affair that she ends up losing herself and falls to drugs and leaves her husband. In

According to Julie Flygare, in her essay intertwining themes in Goblin Market she states that: Rossetti
fills Goblin s Market with subject matter and themes that has strong religious associations. There is an
important theme of temptation similar to Eve s temptation in the Old Testament. Laura is slyly enticed
to eat forbidden fruit, which predictably results in great pain and her lose of innocence (Flygare).
Temptation relays the story of woman as falling for the forbidden fruit, which put the world in chaos.
Goblin Market can be seen as a hint to Eve eating the forbidden fruit and wrecking humanity. As in
Temptation that same dynamic is seen, the woman gets curious and is lured away from good through
the lusting of something else, which evidently was the bachelor. Yes, many scholars focus on the
feminist aspect of the poem, but the allusion to Eve in the garden of Eden is much more prevalent.
Although, Temptation didn t involve fruit, it did however include an aspect that was tempting such as
riches, and treasures. It s almost like an individual selling their soul just to get what they want. The sin
aspect is definitely portrayed in this modern film, it stills hold that same meaning as to what the poem
Goblin Market is trying to denote, which is that sin is everywhere. Plus the idea of women being the
main ones involved with sin. Again in the film it made Judith be looked upon as weak, and unable to

Archetypal Themes In The Poem Barter By Sara Teasdale
A person will experience some type of barter transaction in their lifetime. Some may be a reasonable
transaction although that s not always the case. In the real world, most barter transactions have cash
involved in the trade. But the speaker of this piece is explaining that this barter can not be bought with
money. However, it can be bought by a sentimental value that money can t buy, loveliness. Sara is
emphasizing the fact that humans need to open their eyes to what is in front of them. Through the
poem Barter , Sara Teasdale emphasizes the importance of living lovingly within the moment through
the archetypal themes of Carpe diem and love conquers all.

Although Sara uses the word as a different meaning and not literally, it plays a big role in the poem.
She describes in her second stanza about wanting love. The archetypal theme could also represent love
conquers all and the importance of living lovingly. Sara Teasdale talks about wanting several things in
the poem that she would love to own or be apart of. One could possibly describe wanting a significant
other by her side that has Eyes that love you, arms that hold (Sara Teasdale Line ten). To Sara, having
love is just as important as having happiness.
Life is too short to not enjoy it to the maximum potential. That is the message the speaker wants to
persuade the reader with this poem. It is important to appreciate the small materials or moments in life
just like Sara described For one white singing hour of peace (Sara Teasdale Line fifteen). The speaker
is imploring the reader to open their eyes and enjoy the small moments that will help live a lovingly
life. The title is interesting because the barter is technically between only the speaker. At the end of the
day it is not your typical

The Negative Speech On Famine And Drought
Introduction: (Charlotte)
We would like to begin by thanking the United Nations for giving us this opportunity to speak. Joining
me today are Julia Antony, Ian Rose, and Ryan Amer. We are here to discuss the large topic of famine
and drought. Drought is defined as, A long period of time during which there is very little or no rain
(First picture). These two problems alone are some of the largest overarching issues that our world is
facing right now and have been for centuries. At this stage, no one can ignore the fact that 110 people
have died in the last 48 hours at the hand of famine and drought. (Second picture) Not to mention that
in Somalia, more than 900,000 children are malnourished; that alone is more than the entire
population of children in Connecticut. Now over to you, Julia. *transition to next slide. Body 1: (Julia)
Thanks Charlotte. Extreme rain loss in areas all over the world causes intense droughts. Multiple
complications occur when water is no longer abundant. One of the most severe conflicts caused by
this terrible drought is famine. Famine, described as an extreme scarcity of food, affects over 6.2
million people in Somalia alone. We are still trying to work out how we ended up here, what we
missed, what we did wrong , announced UNICEF senior nutrition manager Peter Harris. ( A Famine

the next few weeks. Little aid is being received in this region,

Comparing White Nights And Piskarevsky
Dreams have only one owner at a time. That s why dreamers are lonely. What Erma Bombeck meant
by this statement is that that even though everyone has their own personal dream, dreams can take up
a lot of someone s time. All that time lost can make someone lonely and disconnected from the real
world. A dreamer can be lonely for his lack of human interaction and creates their fantasies. In 19th
century Russian literature St. Petersburg, the manmade city of Russia, seems to be a famous place for
dreamers. The narrator of White Nights by Dostoevsky and the character of Piskarev from Nevsky
Prospect by Gogol, both share the quality of being lonely which lead then to become a dreamer when
they fall for a mysterious woman. However each character ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

home from getting the drug he swallowed it and dropped off to sleep. God, what joy! She again!
(Gogol P 263). The women of his dreams was whom Piskarev was addicted to not the prostitute
herself, the story doesn t show much sign of her until she rejects his proposal. The narrator too, is so
into the fact to completing his love dream with Nastenka that he in facts waits for the next time
Nastenka told him to come see her by arriving early and just plan ahead to when they meet. The
narrator proclaims I walked about all night. I couldn t bring myself to go home. I was so happy! Til

he still felt the same way. The narrator says to the reader that I came to her with a full heart; I could
scarcely wait for our meeting....I little dreamt it would end quite differently. (Dostoevsky P 41) Here
they are expecting an answer to the letter but scarcely wanted a different ending to their original plan.

  • 2. Professional Singers Enhanced Voice Quality As a result of training, professional singers enhanced voice quality may be related to respiratory, aerodynamic, phonatory, and resonatory/articulatory adjustments. Singers are often trained to onset voicing at varying lung volumes (LVs) to produce voice qualities that are both perceptually pleasing and aerodynamically efficient. The goal of most professional vocal training is determined perceptually by a voice teacher to approach an ideal voice quality for a specific genre (e.g. opera, belt, etc.). We examined the effects of training and task difficulty on physiological vocal behaviors and cortical activation patterns in untrained singers and freshman vocal performance and vocal education students (vocal students) before and after their ... In the second manuscript we examined the effects of vocal performance training on voice onset coordination at different LVs in vocal students. • 3. The Battle Of Palo Alto The Battle of Palo Alto The Battle of Palo Alto was the first major battle of the Mexican American War. The Mexican Army of the North engaged the United States Army of Occupation on a prairie near current day Brownsville, Texas. The conflict took place on May 8th, 1846 and was followed the next by the Battle of Resaca de la Palma, about five miles south. Both battles took place in an area of disputed ownership and, depending on the side, were on the only battles on American soil. Thousands of Americans, who changed citizenship and received large tracts of land from the Mexican government, rebelled in Texas in 1835 for several reasons, including Mexico s abolition of the locally popular Texas provincial government and its inability to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In November of 1845, President Polk named Senator James Slidell of Louisiana as the new American minster to Mexico (Haecker, 1994), and was sent to secretly negotiate with Mexican President Jose Joaquin de Herrera. However, he was overthrown by General Mariano Parades y Arrillaga, Commander of the Army of the North, who denied negotiation with the Americans and demanded the return of the disputed area of Texas. During this time, Polk ordered General Zachary Taylor, who was preemptively stationed at Corpus Christi, to move his unit down to Port Isabel at the mouth of the Rio Grande and Gulf of Mexico. This only increased tensions between the two nations, which came to a height with the construction of the U.S. Fort Texas on the north bank of the Rio Grande, opposite the Mexican town of Matamoros, a natural choke point (Carney, 2005). Up to the War, the American and Mexican armies were about as much the same as they were different. The American force, renamed the U.S. Army of Occupation, was led by General Taylor who had severed in the army since the War of 1812 and was known by his men as Old Rough and Ready. The American Army, organized based on European models, had a strength of 8,613 men and contained only regulars (Carney, 2005). Within this book, there are many themes that are represented. Some of these themes are perseverance, overcoming challenges, and teamwork. All of these themes are important, because they are all interconnected. In literature, it is usually easy for one to identify the protagonist and the antagonist. However, in this book, such task might be quite difficult for one to do. Good and evil are completely mixed in with one another amongst all of the characters, that one might confuse one over the other. There are too many characters involved in this book who play both ends, that it is hard to tell who is a hero or protagonist and who is an enemy or antagonist. An example would be Thomas accepting to meet with Janson to perform the final, fatal trial, just to plant those explosive devices for the Right Arm. Although Janson s desire to find a cure is viewed as good, he is responsible for the death of many people, which is why he is consider to be evil. Introduction The core of research on religion at present is of no doubt touching Max Weber s ideas on economic traditionalism. Weber in Solimano (2012: 42) talked about the importance of religion, especially the Protestant ethic in economic life. By venturing into the field of sociology of religion, Weber further succeeded in arousing many scholars interest in the study of different religions in the contemporary world. Agbikimi (2014: 30) notes that Weber s theory of religion has to do with the interaction between society and religion . This essay, discusses interia Webber s prominent writings on religion which are in fact related to economic traditionalism and the study of religion. The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism has been widely discussed in this essay. Berger (2010: 3) argued that it indicates the continued relevance of Weber s analysis regarding the correlation of the religion and economic development. The essay concludes that, Weber s economic traditionalism analysis is to a greater extent relevant in the study of religion today because of the sense it gives for religious significance which is linked to economic activities and the overall image of the world. • 13. The Effects Of Norm Violation On The Perception Of Power Investigation of the Effects of Norm Violation On the Perception of Power Power governs our society. A powerful person is one that has authority over others. This sense of authority relieves them of the restrictions a person of lesser power might face, allowing them to make and break rules. The four studies conducted in Breaking the Rules to Rise to Power: How Norm Violators Gain Power in the Eyes of Others by Gerben A. Van Kleef, Astrid C. Homan, Catrin Finkenauer, Seval Gu ̈ndemir and Eftychia Stamkou, explores the concept of power and transgression. The first scale was a 25 question questionnaire consisting of adjectives that described social impressions of power and norm violation, which was then rated on a scale from 1 to 7 with 1 being definitely not and 7 being definitely. The second scale asked participants to indicate the extent to which the power statements This person is influential ; . . . has a leadership position ; . . . is in charge of subordinates ; . . . enjoys considerable authority (Van Kleef et al., 2011), applied to the person depicted in the scenario. Results and Discussions Participants rated the actor that took the cup of coffee from the personnel with a higher norm violation score than the actor that went to the bathroom. This indicated that they recognized that the behavior of the actor that took the coffee cup was wrong. Despite that, the participants rated that actor to be more powerful than the actor that went to the bathroom on both scales. This gives the first evidence that violating the norm influences the perception of power (Van Kleef et al., 2011). His career as a psychiatrist gave him a unique perspective and allowed him to focus on the identity formation of the colonized subject and racial injustice. Fanon s insight and view of colonization helped to further explain course material. In Fanon s famous work Black Skin, White Mask, it became obvious how prevalent and severe racism was at that time (Julien). According to Fanon, it led to depersonalization which was so strong that colored people ultimately had to wear a white mask in order to survive. I believe that it s very sad that colored people weren t allowed to fully embrace who they were are and weren t able to live peacefully with the whites. Nobody should have to pretend to be someone whom they aren t. In Frantz Fanon s book titled The Wretched of the Earth, Frantz Fanon asserts that decolonization will always entail violent armed struggles between the colonized and the colonists. He makes several main points to substantiate such a bold and sweeping claim. Fanon states, At whatever level we study decolonization, it is quite simply the substitution of one species of mankind by another. The substitution is absolute, total, and seamless (Fanon 1). The potential pedagogical value of Comics and GNs have caught the attention of the English Language Teaching (ELT) community. In the last decade many experimental language instructors have realised that Comics and GNs can be a valuable teaching tool in the classroom that can facilitate Basic Interpersonal Communicative Skills (BICS) as well as Intercultural Communicative Competence (ICC) in learners. Though there is substantial research expounding the advantages of using Comics and GNs for ELT, these texts have not yet become an integral part of school and college curricula. Against such a background this paper highlights the reasons why it is imperative that the Indian education system should include Comics and GNs in the language learner s curriculum. Authentic texts like Comics and GNs will help in acquiring language proficiency by increasing learner motivation, facilitating contextual understanding, elucidating on conversational maxims and providing input on cultural interactions. The narrative material of Comics and GNs is so diverse that it can appeal both to young and adult learners, while reducing affective filters and encouraging multimodal reading skills. Key Words: ... According to Julie Flygare, in her essay intertwining themes in Goblin Market she states that: Rossetti fills Goblin s Market with subject matter and themes that has strong religious associations. There is an important theme of temptation similar to Eve s temptation in the Old Testament. Laura is slyly enticed to eat forbidden fruit, which predictably results in great pain and her lose of innocence (Flygare). Temptation relays the story of woman as falling for the forbidden fruit, which put the world in chaos. Goblin Market can be seen as a hint to Eve eating the forbidden fruit and wrecking humanity. As in Temptation that same dynamic is seen, the woman gets curious and is lured away from good through the lusting of something else, which evidently was the bachelor. Yes, many scholars focus on the feminist aspect of the poem, but the allusion to Eve in the garden of Eden is much more prevalent. Although, Temptation didn t involve fruit, it did however include an aspect that was tempting such as riches, and treasures. It s almost like an individual selling their soul just to get what they want. The sin aspect is definitely portrayed in this modern film, it stills hold that same meaning as to what the poem Goblin Market is trying to denote, which is that sin is everywhere. After the professor proofed my paper I started to notice a trend in my work. So, going forward I will strive to do my best and fix those common mistakes I easily make. My first paper on taking on line classes what was consistent was the paper was not scrubbed that well. After seeing the mistakes pointed out I wanted to kick myself in the butt because I knew these mistakes were not acceptable, but I submitted the paper anyways.
