The story that i ve decided to do my literature essay on is Flannery O Connor s Everything That
Rises Must Converge . The story starts off with a son, a recent college graduate who currently
sells typewriters, escorting his mom on the bus to her exercise classes. Throughout the whole story
it gives many hints towards the son, Julian s irritation of his mother. The mother would brag about
how her grandfather owned slaves at a plantation, and would speak out loud to other strangers how
she was glad that the bus she was hopping on didn t have any black peopleon it. It was very clear in
the story that Julian s mother was racist but Julian didn t feel the same way about African
Americans. Julian actually wanted to embrace black people and wanted to know more about them.
When he sat on the bus, he would ponder thoughts of one day having a long conversation with an
intellectual black person, or maybe even bringing home an African Americangirlfriend one day.
Suddenly black people start to hop on the same bus as Julian and his mother. His mother starts to
be overly nice to the African Americans, the type of nice where you can tell that her true feelings
for the person is pity. Theres key detail where Julian s mother is wearing an ugly hat that doesn t
actually fit her appearance, however there is a black female who has the exact same hat on and it
looks better on herself. She becomes upset when she sees her son sitting next to one of the black
men, but she doesn t say anything.

The Story Of An Hour, by Kate Chopin, is a short story about a woman who is mourning the death
of her husband at the beginning of the story. She finds out that he s dead from a misleading

Albert Einstein was born to secular Jewish family in Ulm, Germany on March 14, 1879. Einstein is
best known for the development of the theory of relativity, a major structure of physics. However,

norms that distribute vulnerability and security (4). This illustrates that not only does biology
determine who receives power and who doesn t, it also influences the norms that society upholds.
Through this perspective, biology determines how much a person is worth and predicts their
future. For those who do not have the ideal biology, they are left powerless and stranded in their
fixed conditions. Furthermore, those who are defined to be powerful must be protected from those
others (Spade, 5). This operation of norms is used to justify the exclusion of powerless populations
from programs that distribute wealth and life chances and attempts to validate the targeting of these

Introduction
Water, although considered a renewable resource is not available for infinite use as only six
percent of the world s total supply is fresh water. Only this fresh water can be directly used for daily
human needs and thus the amount of water actually available for use is much lower than the total
amount of water present on the earth. The limited amount of water then poses the issue of water
scarcity in some areas and makes the wise use and sustainable management of water extremely
important. To ensure this sustainable management of water and prevent any misuse, it is important
to have an appropriate institutional framework that looks after the water supply. The lack of a
proper framework in the past has lead to the shifting of water management from the hands of the
government to the private sector (Prasad, 2007).
