Demographic Transition Of Pre Industrial
demographic transition theory is a widespread explanation of the changing mold of humanity, fertility
and increase rates as civilizations move from one demographic system to another. The term was first
coined by the American demographer Frank W. Notestein in the mid twentieth century, but it has since
been elaborated and expanded upon by many others (The Demographic Transition, 2012). There are
four stages of demographic transition.
The first stage of the demographic transition is called pre industrial. In this stage, the population is
stable. The birth and death rates are both high. The death rates are at a high due to the increase of
disease, poor medical and personal hygiene care along with the limited supplies of food. With the
death rates being high, people are having more babies to help with mortality rates being so high. With
the birth and death rates being equal, the population growth stays at a zero.
The second stage of the demographic transition theory is called the transitional stage. In this state the
population starts to increase. This happens because the birth rates are high and the death rates are
starting to decline. The second stage is when the development of modern medicine and food
distribution is started to take hold and the death rate starts to diminish. (Saucedo, 2011)
The reason the death rates are starting to decline is due to the reason that the country is transitioning
into an industrial county. This means that there are improvements in the

The Legal Approach Of The American Constitution
The Legal Approach: This approach is very tricky to control the president, and therefore, it is very
important to block and prevent any tyrannical regime because it is all about laws and legislatures. In
here, the American constitution is very important and leads the way. It shows that how the constitution
plays a role in presidency. Through this, the significant advantage of this approach is that the president
and his or her presidency is controlled by the constitution, laws, legal precedents and customs. The
legal approach limits the power of the president, and put some boundaries of the presidential warrant,
reach and powers to prevent any tyrannical kind of regimes. This approach also determines that how a
president uses his or her authority with other branches of the federal government, such as judiciary,
the congress and bureaucracy. The Institutional Approach: The Institutional Approach is a traditional
old and significant one that affects the attitudes of the president towards the institution of the
presidency. Because of this, this approach deals with legislature, executive, judiciary, political parties,
interest groups, and the president himself/herself. The presidential institution exists to handle three
sets of responsibilities, regardless of who is president: policy issues, political targets, and the daily
workload (Nelson, year, 41). Of course, the presidency as an institution is very important. Also, a
president plays an important role in this institution.

Comparing Wollstonecraft s Pride And Prejudice
The novel Pride and Prejudice was set during the late 1700 s and the early 1800 s. Jane Austen wrote
the novel based on the events that occurred around her. Historical conflicts during the construction of
the novel are present in the novel itself. While writing Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen was
influenced by the war with France, the landed gentry, and marriage and gender roles in her society
which caused the plot, characters, and the outcome of the book. The war with France stretched over
twenty two years, and it affected every level of British society. A quarter of a million men were
serving in the regular army, a militia of officers and volunteers in the southeast coast of England
(where Jane was from) were convinced that it was an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In her writing, Wollstonecraft argues that women should be treated with the same equals as men. This
was a conflicting transformation in women s roles that occurred within the century. Elizabeth Bennet
can be considered as an example and a supporter of the writing. Disinherited of her father s property,
Elizabeth is not financially independent, and depends upon advantageous marriage for her future
survival. Although throughout the novel she asserts her independence that reflects some of
Wollstonecraft s opinions and beliefs. An example would be when she rejected to be married with Mr.
Collins even though she was in need of the financial support, as he was the one who was to inherit the
family estate. However Miss Elizabeth Bennet s friend did the exact opposite and married Mr. Collins
because she was already a burden to her parents and was afraid that she would never be asked to
marry again. Elizabeth also stood up to Mr. Darcy when he was making remarks about the country
even though he was at a much higher social status than she was, and she was reminded of that by her

Environmental Effects Of Cadmium
Environmental pollutants are becoming increasingly present throughout the world as industrial
progress has expanded in countries like China. Among these environmental pollutants, Cadmium has
been characterized as the most dangerous heavy metal ion because of its resiliency and numerous
negative health effects (Kermani et. Al., 2010). Growing dependence on chemical fertilizer,
wastewater irrigation, and uncontrolled discharge of industrial waste from activities, such as mining
and smelting, has led to large amounts of Cadmium in soil (Nazar et. Al., 2012). Cadmium has
adverse effects on plant life. Cadmium competes with nutrients, such as Calcium, Magnesium, and
Iron, that are also trying to get through the cell membranes of plant cells (Nazar et. Al., 2012).
Specifically, disruption of the Calcium channel in plants with Cadmium can lead to an altered plant
water relationship, causing, stomatal closure in many plants, leading to lower transpiration rate, and
inhibitions of photosynthesis through an adverse effect on chlorophyll metabolism. (Nazar et. Al.,
2012) Because Cadmium replaces the space that plants have for Calcium, the plants overall function is
worsened because it changes the plant s relationship with water, causing the stomata, which oversee a
plants respiratory function, to close. The plants then begin to transpire less and photosynthesis in
plants decrease as a result. Decreased photosynthesis leads to growth inhibition of plants and an
imbalance in

The Internet Its Effects and Its Future
Internet, its effects in our lives and the future of the Internet: The Internet is, quite literally, a network
of networks. It is comprised of ten thousands of interconnected networks spanning the globe. The
computers that form the Internet range from huge mainframes in research establishments to modest
PCs in people¡¦s homes and offices. Despite the recent hype, the Internet is not a new phenomenon. Its
roots lie in a collection of computers that were linked together in the 1970s to form the US
Department of Defense¡¦s communications systems. Fearing the consequences of nuclear attack, there
was no central computer holding vast amounts of data, rather the information was dispersed across
thousands of machines. A set of rules, of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
People of like minds and interests can share information with one another through electronic mail and
chat rooms. E mail is enabling radically new forms of worldwide human collaboration. Approximately
225 millions of people can send and receive it and they all represent a network of potentially
cooperating individuals dwarfing anything that even the mightiest corporation or government can
muster. Mailing list discussion groups and online conferencing allow us to gather together to work on
a multitude of projects that are interesting or helpful to us. Chat rooms and mailing lists can connect
groups of users to discuss a topic and share ideas. Materials from users can be added to a Web site to
share with others and can be updated quickly and easily anytime. However, the most exciting part of
the Internet is its multimedia and hypertext capabilities. The Web provides information in many
different formats. Of course, text is still a popular way to transmit information, but the Web also
presents information in sound bites, such as music, voice, or special effects. Graphics may be still

such as animation video. Hypertext links allows users to move from one piece of information to

Where Sweatshops Are A Dream By Kristops Analysis
A complex that occurs in sweatshops is there s people that view sweatshops as a horrible thing and
others view sweatshops as a marvelous thing. Why? People discover that sweatshops are run by
criminal syndicates and then there s individuals that desire to be working in sweatshops. It then
becomes a problem to decide whether sweatshops should end or if they should keep going. People
hate the idea of sweatshops and others would dream about having a factory job. It s important to be
aware of the disadvantages and advantages sweatshops have. Sweatshops caught my attention because

Kristof. The context of this article is for his readers to be aware that sweatshops are an essential to
many developing countries that may have beneficial benefits. To summarize Kristof s article, he
indicates the danger of not working in sweatshops. He also reveals that sweatshops can help a country
s economy because it will be providing additional jobs. As I read through the article I learned that
sweatshops are secure, profitable jobs for families in developing countries. Although it may seem like
a terrible job to have, it is the only thing keeping people from from living in poverty. The article was
valuable because Kristof presents numerous facts and powerful stories of families and children, which
are allowing readers to discover that sweatshops aren t always an awful thing. Despite that, something
that this article is missing is information about Kristof living in East Asia. The only thing he mentions
is living there for years. Kristof should let his readers know about his experiences there and things that
occurred, so readers could connect on a deeper level with his article. I would like to learn if working
in the dump is the only option for survival. Moreover, if working in the dump is the only option, what
else could be sold other than plastic cups. I agree with Kristof, the best way to help people in third
world countries is to support sweatshops and promote more where they re needed. However, I
disagree that sweatshops aren t going to the poorest nations because they should be. People in the
poorest nations is where the most help is needed. People working in sweatshops will be making more
money than they could be working

Bacon s Induction Method Essay
The purpose of this study is to explore the soundness of Baconian induction method and its
contribution to the modern scientific method. The study seeks to answer the question, Does the Bacon
s idea of induction help shaped the modern scientific method.
Time has proven Bacon wrong because as of today, the modern scientific method seems to bear no
resemblance to his inductive method. Nevertheless, during Bacon s day in the late 16th to early 17th
century, Aristotelian philosophy overwhelmed all the other intellectual currents. Aristotle s Physics is
to ask a series of whys and answer it methodically. This is also known as the syllogism. In order to
answer the whys, we seek to find a general statement of the nature of the thing about which we asked
the question, the statement is then taken as the premise of an argument, and derive as a conclusion.
Francis Bacon, as the fifth son of Sir Nicholas Bacon, suggests an entirely new system of logic, which
is based on induction rather than on the syllogism.
Review
Bacon argues that syllogism is useless for scientific experiment because they rely on words that might
be too abstract and poorly defined. Moreover, our senses are limited in the manner that they can be
deceived and receive wrong information. Bacon s opinion on sensory knowledge is truly different, ... .
[F]urthermore, we have many ways of scrutinizing the information of the senses themselves. For the

3 Power and Authority
3.1Introduction to power and authority
As Weber suggested one of the way to understanding how organizations change was to study the
power and authority. In Weber s model, there are differences between power and authority. Power
means the chance that someone within a social relationship, and will be in a position to perform his
own wishes that despite the obstruction. Power influences who gets what, when, and how. But what is
authority? Authority was defined as the probability of certain controls or the orders which being
obeyed by a group (Weber 1968 p955).
Organizations or leaders explore legitimacy and believability of their actions in different ways through
the exercise of authority. Weber said that, for lots of exercises of authority in organizations, some of

Example Of Phonetic Based Instructional Unit
B.1. In order to fulfill my Teacher Work Sample assignment, I created a phonetic based instructional
unit, The Foundations of Reading, for a level one through three, adult ESL class. I completed this in
accordance with the following guiding learning goals:
1. Students will identify the letters and sounds of the English alphabet,
2. Students will recognize consonants and vowels, and
3. Students will learn short and long vowel sounds.
Upon completion of the unit, and after reviewing student pre and post test scores, it became evident
that the goal my students made the most improvement in was goal number two;
Students will recognize consonants and vowels. Students achieved an average, combined score, on the
Vowels and Consonants Pre test, of 88 percent. After receiving the corresponding instruction in this
area, their combined average score improved eight percent to 96 percent.
In analyzing this result, I believe there are two plausible reasons. B.1.a. One reason for the students
success with this second goal may actually be the instruction they attained in pursuing the first goal
Students will identify the letters and sounds of the English alphabet. While addressing the letters and
most common phonetic sounds of the English alphabet, (including short vowels sounds) in lessons two
and three, incidental discussions occurred regarding the vowels themselves, due to students curiosity,
prior knowledge and the changeable nature of English vowels phonetic representations.

Cats vs. Dogs Essay
Cats vs. Dogs
Are you a cat person or a dog person? In the age old schism of cats versus dogs, there has always been
a debate for both sides. No matter what side is taken there will always be a debate about which animal
is superior.
People choose pets based on a certain kinship they feel with the animal. Now, perhaps cat lovers are
uptight, but they don t choose to claim kinship with a creature whose first act upon meeting a new
member of its own kind is to sniff its behind. There is also the problem of dignity and discrimination
as in, dogs have none. Where s the discrimination in an animal so mindlessly arduous that its
overpowering instinct upon seeing someone is to hump his or her leg?
And what s dignified about a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They like to be patted and praised and demonstrate their own affection by slobbering all over their
owners after any separation lasting more than fifteen minutes.
Owning an animal can take up a lot of time. For most people time is of the essence, and spending a lot
of time on an animal is unrealistic . Cats are able to live without their owners for days on end. They
can usually find something to eat, and pee if plants for example. But dogs need to be put in kennels
and looked after by another person. Dogs also have to be put on leashes when they are outside. Cats
have the ability to roam freely because their owners do not have to worry about them causing a lot of
trouble. A cat is allowed to be outside until late hours because owners know that the feline will make
its way home, where as a dog at night is usually brought inside, or chained up outside.
Practicality and simplicity help animal owners decide what type of animal they should own. If your
house or apartment is full of mice, a cat will solve the problem. Although, some dogs hunt for small
rodents in a home, they usually confuse live animals with toys. On the other hand, dogs can be trained
to do a variety of things, but sometimes training can be tedious and teaching a dog how to sit can be
impractical for everyday life.
Dogs live in a benevolent universe in which every event and every encounter is a otential learning
experience. The casual stranger is not to be

Analysis Of Blood Meridian Or The Evening Redness Of The West
Blood Meridian or the Evening Redness in the West, is a novel written by an author by the name of
Cormac McCarthy. Cormac McCarthy wrote this to show a teenage runaway perspective of living on
your own during the late 1800 s. Throughout this novel, McCarthy shows the reader the feeling of
being in hell and describing a kid s journey through hell. This eye opening novel takes place in Texas,
Mexico and the American Southwest, Circa. This historical fiction novel is surprisingly accurate when
describing the events that occurred during the situations in the Southwestern U.S. and Mexico around
the 1850 s. McCarthy s Blood Meridian contains a lot of violent and bloody events that build up to the
subjugation of the Apaches, as well as other Native tribes, and the southwestern expansion of the
United States of America. All these events are proven to be an accurate description of the way
Indigenous people were treated and how they lived throughout this time. The story Blood Meridian or
the Evening Redness of the West, explains a couple of the major frontier themes of a man s kinship for
violence, religion, and power in the Western American History. These can be found as the theme
depending on the way the reader interprets it. The story represents the traditions of the American
Southwest, as the kid meets different people with different perspectives on life. This novel describes a
journey of a young boy, who McCarthy doesn t give a name to, but refers to the character as the

Functional Assessment Methods
1) A functional assessment of a problem behavior would be gathering information about antecedents
and consequences that relate to the behavior. It is important to conduct functional assessment because
it gives you information that helps you determine why a problem behavior is happening.
2) Four possible functions of problem behavior include: Social positive reinforcement (this is
delivered by another person after target behavior, which increases the likelihood of the behavior),
social negative reinforcement (when someone gets rid of an aversive stimulus, which makes a
behavior more likely to occur), automatic positive reinforcement (when a behavior produces positive
reinforced consequences, which increases likelihood of behavior), and automatic negative
reinforcement (when target behavior ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Consequences and antecedents must show how they effect the behavior.

The Qing Dynasty fell apart in the 19th after flourishing throughout the 18th century. Like many

The Qing Dynasty had experience a very prosperous period. But at the middle of the Chien Lung
years, there were both internal problems and external invasion. And let s see how these problems
became the symptoms of decline of this former great country. The administrative inefficiency was a
serious problem causing the Qing government to collapse. Since the emperor of the Qing government
held a suspicion feeling on the officials, so he set up many restrictions, checks and regulations on
them. Gradually the officials thought the less responsibility the less risk they will face. This really
hinders the administration of the government. And there was nobody wants to take charge on
important matters. So the decision had to be maked up by the emperor himself. But after Chien Lung
there was no great emperor. At this point you are probably wondering how on Earth the Qing Dynasty
lasted this long after all the wars and rebellions. And by this time it seemed as if China did not have
much say in what went on in its own territories. Communism was clearly not working for China. Sun
Yat Sen realized this and he attempted to do something about it. He came close to death to try and
make his dream of China becoming a Republic a reality. In the 1890 s he formed a secret, anti Qing
society and by 1895 there was a price for his head in China forcing him to have to leave the country.
His dream was to see China become a Republic and to make this happen he

Catholic Church Art Analysis
The project I decided to work one was to go to a church different from my own Baptist religious
tradition and decided to attend a Catholic church. I decided to go to a Catholic Church because both
my father and husband are Catholic, and I have not been to Sunday Mass since I was a child and don t
have much recollection of it. I wanted to have that experience now as an adult.
I attended Sunday Mass at Mission San Jose. I wanted to go to a place that was rich with History. I
enjoyed the art displayed inside and outside of Mission San Jose. I was in awe with the beautiful
structures, the Mission/Church was aged beautifully. Throughout the inside walls of Mission San Jose
there was candelabras, and instead of the traditional stained windows you see in a Catholic church,
this one was instead displayed by engraved plaques. The Main wall was displayed by beautiful Saints,
angels, and the crucifixion of Jesus. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

administration, and scoring. Technical evaluation is the third section of the paper that discusses
research done on the MBTI throughout the years. The technical evaluation section will talk about the
correct sampling, reliability, and validity of the assessment. The quality of the test, administration,

Essay about How Societies Manage Disputes
INTRODUCTION
Law is one method of resolving disputes when, as is inevitable, they emerge. All societies have
mechanisms for dealing with such problems, but the forms of dispute resolution tend to differ from
society to society. In small scale societies, based on mutual co operation and interdependency, the
means of solving disputes tend to be informal and focus on the need for mutual concessions and
compromise to maintain social stability. In some such societies, the whole of the social group may
become involved in settling a problem, whereas in others, particular individuals may be recognized as
intermediaries, whose function it is to act as a go between to bring the parties to a mutually recognized
solution. The common factor remains ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It can be argued that arbitration represents a privatization of the judicial process. It may be assumed,
therefore, that of all its virtues, perhaps the greatest, at least as far as the government is concerned, is
the potential reduction in costs for the State in providing the legal framework within which disputes
are resolved.
ADVANTAGES OF TRIBUNALS
Advantages of tribunals over courts relate to such matters as:
Speed The ordinary court system is notoriously dilatory in hearing and deciding cases. Tribunals are
much quicker to hear cases. A related advantage of the tribunal system is the certainty that it will be
heard on a specific date and not subject to the vagaries of the court system. This being said, there have
been reports that the tribunal system is coming under increased pressure and is falling behind in
relation to its caseload. Thus, in 1993, in relation to the employment tribunal, Feaser Youlson, the Vice
Chair of the Employment Lawyers Association, complained that cases which had previously taken
three to five months to be heard could now take over 18 months.
Cost Tribunals are a much cheaper way of deciding cases than using the ordinary court system. One
factor that leads to a reduction in cost is the fact that no specialized court building is required to hear
the cases. Also, the fact that those deciding the cases are less expensive to employ than judges,
together with the fact that complainants do

Archetypes In Frankenstein
Victor Frankenstein, in Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, portrays both a Byronic hero and a tragic hero.
Characteristics of both of these types of hero archetypes shape Victor by depicting him as a victim,
despite the fact that he created the monster, and these characteristics shape the themes of the novel.
Victor has characteristics of a Byronic hero, which shapes his character and the themes. A Byronic
hero is a melancholy and rebellious young man, distressed by a terrible wrong he committed in the
past (The Definition of Byronic Hero). Victor is clearly troubled from creating the monster, as seen in:
his stature...exceed that of a man. I was troubled; a mist came over my eyes, and I felt a faintness seize

Theses qualities portray Victor as the victim and innocent, which is ironic since he created the monster
which caused all the destruction and terror. Victor portraying himself as a victim caused all of the
tragedies to occur fairly quickly, because he could have gone to authorities earlier and they might have
treated him differently. The victim act brings up the complexity of the relationship between Victor and
the creature; since he created the monster he should be in control of the relationship, yet the monster is
in control and powerful since Victor is innocent. Victor is not a victim of the creature, but a victim of
fate and free will, yet Victor refuses to believe that he had any decision in this matter and blames it all
on fate. These qualities also call attention to the theme of parenting since the creature upsets Victor
and he refuses to take care of it and how the lack of parental influence can cause somebody to make
bad decisions. This again brings attention to the paradoxical relationship between the creature and
Frankenstein, since the creature is more powerful than the creator. Byronic and tragic hero
characteristics combine in Frankenstein because Victor is a melancholic man who made a error in the
past which causes his downfall. The combination of these two type of heroes allows Victor to be a
victim and brings in the theme of

Absurdism In The Stranger
Albert Camus utilizes an existential philosophy, absurdism, in his story, The Stranger . Absurdism is
when humans live meaningless lives in an irrational universe. Meursault, the protagonist in The
Stranger , has an absurdist view to life, which the story revolves around. Meursault s unique view of
life is unique and different from the ethics of the society. Absurdism plays a key role in Meursault s
life as the absurd sun influences his actions while his absurdist philosophies make him a stranger to
society. The absurd sun physically weakens Meursault leading him to make irrational decisions. The
sun is symbolic in The Stranger as it presents the irrationality in Meursault s universe. The sun is a
recurring symbol in the story and the first instance where it displays the irrationality in Meursault s
world is when Meursault is faced with the Arab at the beach as the sun was starting to burn [his]
cheeks, and [he] could feel drops of sweat...It was this burning that made [him] move forward (58).
Meursault encounters the Arab and the intense weather dictates his actions and makes Meursault think
irrationally. The use of the words made him show how the sun dictates his actions, which is
completely irrational. When Meursault is physically weakened in any form he thinks irrationally. In
this case, the sun weakens him physically as it is burning and leads him to step forward thinking he
could get the sun off of him, which is irrational. The irrationality of the weather dictating Meursault s
actions is absurdism. As Meursault makes his journey to the Arabs at the spring he realizes that all [he]
had to do was turn around and that would be the end of it. But, the whole beach, throbbing in the sun,
was pressing on [his] back. [He] took a few steps toward the spring (58). Meursault is aware that all he
needs to do is turn back; however he takes a few steps forward showing how the sun dictates his
actions. Furthermore, Meursault is physically weakened as the intense heat was pressing on his back
leading to his irrational thought to disregard his mind and move forward. Throughout the story,
Meursault is constantly led into irrational thought when physically weakened. An absurdist world is
defined to be one

Chaucer had the capacity see the significance and future achievement of the working class, and

Bullying And Emotional Abuse Among School Children
Research Summary of Bullying and Emotional Abuse Among School Children
Bullying is a social phenomenon that goes beyond gender, age, and culture. There are wide ranges in
the definition of the term, bullying it is essentially characterized by one or more individuals primarily
to assert control or power. Bullying is a common thing now a day s on school playgrounds,
neighborhood, social media also called cyber bullying , and at homes. Bullying among children brings
a variety of negative acts carried out repeatedly over time. Bullying can take three different forms like,
physical aggression (hitting, punching, pushing, taking personal belongings, etc.), verbal (malicious
tease, name calling, humiliation criticism, etc.), and psychological attacks (rumors, manipulation,
jokes, intimidation, etc.).
When it comes to bullying there are short and long term consequences for both the perpetrator and the
victims. Victims of bullying, experience more physical and psychological problems than their peer
who are not harassed by others. Bullying may also contribute to the development of eating disorders
like anorexia and bulimia nervosa, anxiety, depression, bad grades, and even death. The consequences
for the perpetrator can lead to being expelled from school, suspended from things they like and even
going to jail or prison depending how old they are and the charges the school and parents make to
them. The risk for these negative outcomes is increased if the bullying is severe,

The Era Of The Baroque Era
According to Greenberg (2009), the Baroque era is estimated to be the time period spanning from
1600 until 1750. The year of Sebastian Bach s death, 1750 which is notably and associatively used as
a timeline reference that ends this overly extravagant period of creativity. This timespan became an era
of expressive exuberance of primal human emotions as secularization, the study of scientific reasoning
and intellectual rationale characterized the societal environment. Religion no longer dominated and
controlled the subject matter and stylization of artistic expression, yet it did not disappear, it merely
stepped into the background. The Classical era is estimated to be the time period spanning from 1750
until 1827. Similarly 1827, the year of Beethoven s death is used to mark the ending of another era.
Within this timespan, society transitioned from overly ornate to a more defined sophisticated culture
with the introduction of the Enlightenment 1730 1780. The Enlightenment s ideals for the betterment
of mankind gave rise to Cosmopolitanism and an international blurring of musical lines. European
mercantilism gave rise to a growing middle class whose social importance became equal to that of the
aristocracy and the high clergy. The middle class s increased finances allowed them the purchase of

Evolution Of Merlin Research Paper
Arthurian Literature: The Evolution of Merlin
In all the long history of literature, some fictional characters have loomed above others, written about
again and again by various authors of various eras. Arthurian literature is one area of fiction that has
always been popular for writers to recreate in new versions, and one of the most intriguing characters
of all Arthurian literature is Merlin, the magician/ prophet who aids Arthur early in his reign. As the
Arthurian saga develops, so does Merlin, changing from an aloof, druidical character into a more
human, magical being, though always retaining some traces of his Welsh origins.

Here we first meet the character Merlinus ( Merdinus, a more exact Latinization of the original Welsh,
was impractical because of its similarity to the Latin or French word for excrement, surely an
inappropriate name for a great hero). (Bruce) Yet the Merlin of this story is not the great magician of
later works. In his tale, Geoffrey uses not the Latin word magus, which would imply that Merlin was
some sort of sorcerer, but rather the word vates, commonly indicating a poet or, often, a prophet or
seer. (Tatlock) Merlin does exhibit many features of a mystic in Geoffrey s Historia: he uses
clairvoyance in the familiar case, borrowed from Nennius, of Vortigern s vanishing tower; he foretells
Vortigern s death and prophesies to Aurelius and Uther of Arthur s coming reign, also making several
predictions about political events occuring just prior to the publication of the Historia; and he
interprets to Uther Pendragon a portent of the death of the king Aurelius Ambrosius. (Bruce)
Clairvoyance, prophecy, and the interpretation of dreams are all rather shamanistic actions that would
fit Merlin s Welsh character as a druid.
Merlin is not yet a romance magician in Geoffrey s work: the few feats later expanded into mighty
demonstrations of magic are not so in Geoffrey. Merlin disguises Uther as Gorlois for his rendevous

Cruising Down The Street Summary
After the Industrial Revolution, the idea of family and home went through a significant
transformation. Many businesses went from being very family oriented and personal to anonymous
and profit oriented. Compounded with issues of institutional racism, poverty, and poor education,
there was a growing controversy with the use of streets in the city. Jennifer Tilton, writer of Cruising
Down the Boulevard discusses the rhetorical and institutional harms towards youth being in public
and private property while Ulf Hannerz analyzes different subsets of Urban Studies and how they can
be used to think about societal circumstances in the city. Privatization of urban spaces is both a
predecessor and result of alienation of misunderstood persons. Concerned outsiders often use harmful
language that redirects and distracts otherwise productive efforts to fix a neighborhood.
In Oakland, public spaces were becoming more and more filled with police presence and reinforced as
forbidden areas. Community activists were very concerned with teenagers getting involved with crime
in the streets and also contributing to crime. In the process, community members criminalized youth
based on ambiguous traits and adults tried to control the way youth used the streets. Jennifer Tilton
believes that youth impact social geographies of a city(Tilton 161). She has the insight to recognize
the effects of childhood: the presence of children changes the dynamics within a family,
neighborhood, and even city.

abuse. She even experienced this through a brief relationship, and though she did end up loving him
he eventually revealed he was only looking for someone to marry to avoid the draft. Walking away in
defeat, she found Madame Aubaine and signed on to work for her fifty years. It s here that she begins
the biggest of her struggles. Under Madame Aubaine she suffered four hardships that were common in
Felicite s days. Her first hardship was the loss of her nephew on his journey to America. As explained
in the story, when Felicite s nephew left for the new world she constantly paced back and forth hoping
a letter from him would arrive soon. The constant anxiety of never knowing whether or not he was

The Zookeeper s Wife
The opening scene of the Zookeeper s Wife is vital in establishing the binary between the oasis of the
zoo before the war and the destruction the war brings. Natural sunlight fills the first scene of the film
and green is a common color found throughout the zoo. The first scene oozes natural beauty and
signifies the life that occupies it. The zoo seems almost too perfect, like it could not possibly be a
creation of man, but of one gifted from the heavens. The zoo begins as the Garden of Eden in the
midst of Poland, but as the war erupts, it mimics the original sin, destroying the zoo turning its
sanctuary into a thing of the past. The ash from the ghettos covers the zoo and literally represents

Review Of Biosemantics Millikan s Goal For ``...
Jessica Scruggs Phil 307 Response Paper #3 11/11/16 Millikan s Biosemantics Millikan s goal for
Biosementaics is to explain what connects a representation with the thing it represents. To reach this
goal, Millikan has to explain that there are special conditions that need to be met to form a connection
between a representation and its object. These content fixing conditions cannot be statistically normal
conditions, because normal is a relative term. An example Millikan gives is that of a red face. Is it a
sign of sunburn? Exertion? Overheating? Embarrassment? Or, often times in my case, alcohol flush?
There are numerous views that focus on the idea that what produces a representation is what makes it
what it is. Millikan brings up views by Fodor, Stampe, Matthen, and Dretske. Millikan dismisses
Fodor s idea that content is fixed by a causal connection, but the representation s role in a functional
system is what, in the end, determines how the content is fixed. She dismisses it because having fixed
content means to act like a representation. Stampe, Matthen, and Dretske say that the representations
have a detecting or indicating role, but Millikan also dismisses this as unenlightening, because the
terms detect and indicate basically mean to represent. Millikan refutes all of these notions so that she
can explain that the way a representation is used is what fixes the content, not how it was made. The
object of representation stands for something because there is

  • 2. Demographic Transition Of Pre Industrial demographic transition theory is a widespread explanation of the changing mold of humanity, fertility and increase rates as civilizations move from one demographic system to another. The term was first coined by the American demographer Frank W. Notestein in the mid twentieth century, but it has since been elaborated and expanded upon by many others (The Demographic Transition, 2012). There are four stages of demographic transition. The first stage of the demographic transition is called pre industrial. In this stage, the population is stable. The birth and death rates are both high. The death rates are at a high due to the increase of disease, poor medical and personal hygiene care along with the limited supplies of food. With the death rates being high, people are having more babies to help with mortality rates being so high. With the birth and death rates being equal, the population growth stays at a zero. The second stage of the demographic transition theory is called the transitional stage. In this state the population starts to increase. This happens because the birth rates are high and the death rates are starting to decline. The second stage is when the development of modern medicine and food distribution is started to take hold and the death rate starts to diminish. (Saucedo, 2011) The reason the death rates are starting to decline is due to the reason that the country is transitioning into an industrial county. This means that there are improvements in the ... • 4. The Legal Approach Of The American Constitution The Legal Approach: This approach is very tricky to control the president, and therefore, it is very important to block and prevent any tyrannical regime because it is all about laws and legislatures. In here, the American constitution is very important and leads the way. It shows that how the constitution plays a role in presidency. Through this, the significant advantage of this approach is that the president and his or her presidency is controlled by the constitution, laws, legal precedents and customs. The legal approach limits the power of the president, and put some boundaries of the presidential warrant, reach and powers to prevent any tyrannical kind of regimes. This approach also determines that how a president uses his or her authority with other branches of the federal government, such as judiciary, the congress and bureaucracy. The Institutional Approach: The Institutional Approach is a traditional old and significant one that affects the attitudes of the president towards the institution of the presidency. Because of this, this approach deals with legislature, executive, judiciary, political parties, interest groups, and the president himself/herself. The presidential institution exists to handle three sets of responsibilities, regardless of who is president: policy issues, political targets, and the daily workload (Nelson, year, 41). • 6. Environmental Effects Of Cadmium Environmental pollutants are becoming increasingly present throughout the world as industrial progress has expanded in countries like China. Among these environmental pollutants, Cadmium has been characterized as the most dangerous heavy metal ion because of its resiliency and numerous negative health effects (Kermani et. Al., 2010). Growing dependence on chemical fertilizer, wastewater irrigation, and uncontrolled discharge of industrial waste from activities, such as mining and smelting, has led to large amounts of Cadmium in soil (Nazar et. Al., 2012). Cadmium has adverse effects on plant life. Cadmium competes with nutrients, such as Calcium, Magnesium, and Iron, that are also trying to get through the cell membranes of plant cells (Nazar et. Al., 2012). Specifically, disruption of the Calcium channel in plants with Cadmium can lead to an altered plant water relationship, causing, stomatal closure in many plants, leading to lower transpiration rate, and inhibitions of photosynthesis through an adverse effect on chlorophyll metabolism. (Nazar et. Al., 2012) Because Cadmium replaces the space that plants have for Calcium, the plants overall function is worsened because it changes the plant s relationship with water, causing the stomata, which oversee a plants respiratory function, to close. The plants then begin to transpire less and photosynthesis in plants decrease as a result. Decreased photosynthesis leads to growth inhibition of plants and an imbalance in ... This historical fiction novel is surprisingly accurate when describing the events that occurred during the situations in the Southwestern U.S. and Mexico around the 1850 s. • 27. Essay about How Societies Manage Disputes INTRODUCTION Law is one method of resolving disputes when, as is inevitable, they emerge. All societies have mechanisms for dealing with such problems, but the forms of dispute resolution tend to differ from society to society. In small scale societies, based on mutual co operation and interdependency, the means of solving disputes tend to be informal and focus on the need for mutual concessions and compromise to maintain social stability. In some such societies, the whole of the social group may become involved in settling a problem, whereas in others, particular individuals may be recognized as intermediaries, whose function it is to act as a go between to bring the parties to a mutually recognized solution. The common factor remains ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It can be argued that arbitration represents a privatization of the judicial process. It may be assumed, therefore, that of all its virtues, perhaps the greatest, at least as far as the government is concerned, is the potential reduction in costs for the State in providing the legal framework within which disputes are resolved. ADVANTAGES OF TRIBUNALS Advantages of tribunals over courts relate to such matters as: Speed The ordinary court system is notoriously dilatory in hearing and deciding cases. Tribunals are much quicker to hear cases. A related advantage of the tribunal system is the certainty that it will be heard on a specific date and not subject to the vagaries of the court system. This being said, there have been reports that the tribunal system is coming under increased pressure and is falling behind in relation to its caseload. Thus, in 1993, in relation to the employment tribunal, Feaser Youlson, the Vice Chair of the Employment Lawyers Association, complained that cases which had previously taken three to five months to be heard could now take over 18 months. Cost Tribunals are a much cheaper way of deciding cases than using the ordinary court system. One factor that leads to a reduction in cost is the fact that no specialized court building is required to hear the cases. Also, the fact that those deciding the cases are less expensive to employ than judges, together with the fact that complainants do ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Characteristics of both of these types of hero archetypes shape Victor by depicting him as a victim, despite the fact that he created the monster, and these characteristics shape the themes of the novel. Victor has characteristics of a Byronic hero, which shapes his character and the themes. A Byronic hero is a melancholy and rebellious young man, distressed by a terrible wrong he committed in the past (The Definition of Byronic Hero). Victor is clearly troubled from creating the monster, as seen in: his stature...exceed that of a man. I was troubled; a mist came over my eyes, and I felt a faintness seize me (Shelly 93). Theses qualities portray Victor as the victim and innocent, which is ironic since he created the monster which caused all the destruction and terror. Victor portraying himself as a victim caused all of the tragedies to occur fairly quickly, because he could have gone to authorities earlier and they might have treated him differently. The victim act brings up the complexity of the relationship between Victor and the creature; since he created the monster he should be in control of the relationship, yet the monster is in control and powerful since Victor is innocent. Victor is not a victim of the creature, but a victim of fate and free will, yet Victor refuses to believe that he had any decision in this matter and blames it all on fate. These qualities also call attention to the theme of parenting since the creature upsets Victor and he refuses to take care of it and how the lack of parental influence can cause somebody to make bad decisions. This again brings attention to the paradoxical relationship between the creature and Frankenstein, since the creature is more powerful than the creator. Byronic and tragic hero characteristics combine in Frankenstein because Victor is a melancholic man who made a error in the past which causes his downfall. The combination of these two type of heroes allows Victor to be a victim and brings in the theme of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 30. Absurdism In The Stranger Albert Camus utilizes an existential philosophy, absurdism, in his story, The Stranger . Absurdism is when humans live meaningless lives in an irrational universe. Meursault, the protagonist in The Stranger , has an absurdist view to life, which the story revolves around. Meursault s unique view of life is unique and different from the ethics of the society. Absurdism plays a key role in Meursault s life as the absurd sun influences his actions while his absurdist philosophies make him a stranger to society. The absurd sun physically weakens Meursault leading him to make irrational decisions. The sun is symbolic in The Stranger as it presents the irrationality in Meursault s universe. The sun is a recurring symbol in the story and the first instance where it displays the irrationality in Meursault s world is when Meursault is faced with the Arab at the beach as the sun was starting to burn [his] cheeks, and [he] could feel drops of sweat...It was this burning that made [him] move forward (58). Meursault encounters the Arab and the intense weather dictates his actions and makes Meursault think irrationally. The use of the words made him show how the sun dictates his actions, which is completely irrational. When Meursault is physically weakened in any form he thinks irrationally. In this case, the sun weakens him physically as it is burning and leads him to step forward thinking he could get the sun off of him, which is irrational. The irrationality of the weather dictating Meursault s actions is absurdism. As Meursault makes his journey to the Arabs at the spring he realizes that all [he] had to do was turn around and that would be the end of it. But, the whole beach, throbbing in the sun, was pressing on [his] back. [He] took a few steps toward the spring (58). Meursault is aware that all he needs to do is turn back; however he takes a few steps forward showing how the sun dictates his actions. This timespan became an era of expressive exuberance of primal human emotions as secularization, the study of scientific reasoning and intellectual rationale characterized the societal environment. In his tale, Geoffrey uses not the Latin word magus, which would imply that Merlin was some sort of sorcerer, but rather the word vates, commonly indicating a poet or, often, a prophet or seer. (Tatlock) Merlin does exhibit many features of a mystic in Geoffrey s Historia: he uses clairvoyance in the familiar case, borrowed from Nennius, of Vortigern s vanishing tower; he foretells Vortigern s death and prophesies to Aurelius and Uther of Arthur s coming reign, also making several predictions about political events occuring just prior to the publication of the Historia; and he interprets to Uther Pendragon a portent of the death of the king Aurelius Ambrosius. Many businesses went from being very family oriented and personal to anonymous and profit oriented. Compounded with issues of institutional racism, poverty, and poor education, there was a growing controversy with the use of streets in the city. Jennifer Tilton, writer of Cruising Down the Boulevard discusses the rhetorical and institutional harms towards youth being in public and private property while Ulf Hannerz analyzes different subsets of Urban Studies and how they can be used to think about societal circumstances in the city. Privatization of urban spaces is both a predecessor and result of alienation of misunderstood persons. Concerned outsiders often use harmful language that redirects and distracts otherwise productive efforts to fix a neighborhood. In Oakland, public spaces were becoming more and more filled with police presence and reinforced as forbidden areas. Community activists were very concerned with teenagers getting involved with crime in the streets and also contributing to crime. In the process, community members criminalized youth based on ambiguous traits and adults tried to control the way youth used the streets. Jennifer Tilton believes that youth impact social geographies of a city(Tilton 161). She has the insight to recognize the effects of childhood: the presence of children changes the dynamics within a family, neighborhood, and even city. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Jessica Scruggs Phil 307 Response Paper #3 11/11/16 Millikan s Biosemantics Millikan s goal for Biosementaics is to explain what connects a representation with the thing it represents. To reach this goal, Millikan has to explain that there are special conditions that need to be met to form a connection between a representation and its object. These content fixing conditions cannot be statistically normal conditions, because normal is a relative term. An example Millikan gives is that of a red face. Is it a sign of sunburn? Exertion? Overheating? Embarrassment? Or, often times in my case, alcohol flush? There are numerous views that focus on the idea that what produces a representation is what makes it what it is. Millikan brings up views by Fodor, Stampe, Matthen, and Dretske. Millikan dismisses Fodor s idea that content is fixed by a causal connection, but the representation s role in a functional system is what, in the end, determines how the content is fixed. She dismisses it because having fixed content means to act like a representation. Stampe, Matthen, and Dretske say that the representations have a detecting or indicating role, but Millikan also dismisses this as unenlightening, because the terms detect and indicate basically mean to represent. Millikan refutes all of these notions so that she can explain that the way a representation is used is what fixes the content, not how it was made. The object of representation stands for something because there is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
