Sometimes there are holes in the understanding and knowledge we have of things. To help us
understand, we try and patch those holes with what are called conspiracy theories. William
Shakespeare s life is one big quilt filled with holes. People all over the world have come up with
conspiracy theories to try and fill these gaps in his life. Some are made with educated guesses
while others are just wild theories made by people who just happened to stumbleupon William

Various group theories of Shakespearean authorship were proposed as early as the mid 19th
century. The first published book focused entirely on the authorship debate was The Philosophy
of the Plays of Shakespeare Unfolded, by Delia Bacon. In 1856 Delia Bacon, another American,
wrote an article to support this theory and attributed the authorship to a group of people who
were overseen by Sir Francis Bacon and Sir Walter Raleigh. [3] The group was made up of a
bunch politicians and included Edmund Spenser, Lord Buckhurst, and Edward de Vere, 17th
Earl of Oxford. A group theory was also described in Gilbert Slater s The Seven Shakespeares,
written in 1931 in which he theorised that the works were written by seven different authors:
Francis Bacon, Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford, Sir Walter Raleigh, William Stanley, 6th
Earl of Derby, Christopher Marlowe, Mary Sidney, Countess of Pembroke, and Roger Manners,
5th Earl of Rutland.[4] In the early 1960s, A theory was composed that Edward de Vere, Francis
Bacon, Roger Manners, William Herbert and Mary Sidney made up a group called The Oxford
Syndicate .[4] As the simpler theories are created people try and build off of them creating
hundreds of theories for every one theory we have. An example of this is people have made
variants of the group theories
