attempting to limit alcohol consumption to protect students from the negative
consequences associated with alcohol abuse. This is a compilation of a few different
behavioral intervention strategies for reducing alcohol consumption in college age
students. According to Dr. Amaro of the Institute on Urban Research at Northeastern
University in Boston, Massachusetts and Reed, Rowe, Picci, Mantella, and Prado,
(2010), implementation of the Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College
Students (BASICS) can be linked to safer drinking practices among college students
(2010). Two of the articles used for this research are about brief intervention

One Mischievous Little Organ
The way our body works is incredibly complex, but a wonderful thing that we are
given. Without everything working it would be hard to do simple tasks. When
certain things do shut down or stop working properly it can ruin a life. The littlest of
organs can have an enormous effect on the body which it did on me. The thyroid a
small organ on the front of your neck gave me some serious problems for about 2
years. From little things like sleep, appetite, and headaches it quickly scaled to
many more major things like heart palpations and severe dehydration. It may seem
like something useless in the body, but I will never forget what it caused, and how
hard it was to overcome it. That little organ did way more than it probably knew it
could do which was giving me a completely different outlook on life itself.
How could one simple thing do that to my entire body. I would ask later on when I
finally figured out who the culprit of my sickness was. That thyroid caused many
problems around the ages of 14 16. The first sign of this takes me back all the way
to eighth grade where I was just incredibly tired. I felt absolutely horrible
physically I couldn t get out of bed, and it was hard to do some simple tasks like
walking. I would be out of school for two days when my mother who thought it was
the flu that was affecting eventually made an appointment for the doctor to get

When interviewing Miss Simpson on November 01, 2017, I learned that fifty years
ago, Lockwood was a predominately African American neighborhood. It was a
neighborhood where neighbors would speak during encounters, participate in
engagements in the community, take walks around the block, entertain each other in
their homes, and watch after the children. Essentially, it was more than a
neighborhood. It was a community. Fast forward to 2017, things are different at first
sight. New houses that scream, Gentrification are being built on almost every block.
At first, they seem to be out of place as they stand in comparison to the older houses.
Houses that have witnessed more things than I could ever imagine. Houses that I
would soon learn to have occupied by multiple generations. Houses that had a story.
While none of the new houses I saw embodied any of the qualities that drew me to
admire the older houses, I felt this sense that they were the first step in this process
of transformation that was taking place in the Lockwood neighborhood. As a looked
up to saw the view of downtown and the sound of busy cars, I thought to myself, I
should have expected this to happen sooner or later.
Parallel to the older houses, the older residents in Lockwood have a story. A story
that illustrates the love for one community, even during rough times. I quickly
learned after conversing with Miss Simpson, her granddaughter, and Mr. Bell that
Lockwood to them is not just a neighborhood that is positioned perfectly next to
downtown Charlotte. It is a neighborhood that has always extended open arms to
