1) The documentary shows the life of a young Syrian girl through snapshots of different days, from her birthday party to the escalating conflict in her community.
2) As violence increases, her father packs up to leave while she follows her mother, confused by the events unfolding. Scenes of explosions use handheld camerawork to convey the girl's tension and perspective.
3) Through close-ups of the girl and changes in lighting and sound design, the film aims to help viewers understand the emotional experience of children in Syria and the deterioration of daily life due to war.
2. Mise En Scene
This simply shows us the viewers the difference between children in the UK and Syria.
This image Cleary shows us that this girl lived a normal life before it got destroyed. She
enjoyed her birthday as we can see the joy in her face with her party dress, however her
happiness doesn’t last as long as we think it should - this is simply evident when we see
the explosion that’s happening around her city. On Halloween the scene starts to
change for the worst and good the lighting changes, this is called low –key lighting. After
the Halloween scene everything started to go dramatically wrong as her dad was packing
to go far away from the troubles that were about to occur in there community and she's
a young confused child just following her dad as he get caught in trouble with the
soldiers which lead her to follow her mother. In addition to this all started when her
mother started reading the newspaper a lot and her dad started having problems with
neighbours about shooting people this all build conflict but it was hard for her to
understand as she was a young girl lost in her own world the camera angles don’t tend
to change and is mostly and mainly focused on her and is hand held this is evident in the
pictures as its in more of a stabilized position however the main point is that she shows
her life and how she lives it. Furthermore the denotation in the second picture shows us
that the sky is grey and misty this simply tells us the audience that the connotation is
that bad things are approaching such as war and death we know this because of the
meaning behind the advert is about Syrian children and shots used is mostly close up
this cause the director wants us to focus on her emotion.
3. Camera
In this short film we understand that the camera angle doesn’t seem to change in every shot this is
done for us to understand the audience to understand the emotions that the girls in Syria go through
however during the time of 0:37 we tend to see some spectacles of explosions happen this is where we
see that the camera starts to change angles and positions the camera is not stable anymore and is not
supported by a tripod when it comes to the explosive's scenes is mostly hand held this is too show the
tension that the young girl is going through so us the viewers feel that we are in the same position as
the young girl. However there was also colour effects when she was running with her dad but
unfortunately her dad couldn’t make so which meant the director used this effect for us to feel
sympathy for what going and made spectacle for us to understand. The framing was very unique as the
camera was never away from the young girl which helped us understand the dynamic structure of the
short film. The main shots were close ups which built suspense and the focus was mostly on the young
traumatised girl and some shots were different at times for example when she was running playing
football with her dad in the park it had a different movement and angle to help us the audience analyse
her identity and what going behind her
4. sound
The sound in this short film has levels we witness this when she goes
through a hard time such as when she was in danger and has a gas mask
around her face an was running with her mum as fast as she can to get
shelter and some treatment which meant the sound level went up to built
tension and the steam behind her was created by CGI and special effects .
we hear noises behind her such as gun shot and explosions and people
shouting for help this is all done to create clarity for us the audience to
understand that in Syria there's a HUGE difference in the Uk and we
shouldn’t take what we have for granted .however we also see that the
production team have used a non-diegetic sound which means that the
sound that they have used was not used on set and was transitioned whilst
editing which something that was agreed on during the pre production. In
addition to this the fidelity was that the girl was always loyal to what was
going in every scene .
5. Editing
The editing included a variety of shots that lasted only couple of
seconds this was done quickly by the transitions that’s the production
team added within the editing they put behind the scenes despite this
they also had good rhythm which added up to the perfect story line for
us to understand that we need to feel sympathy for the others that are
suffering however towards the end we see that the scene is more
prolonged than what we see in the short film and the same scene from
the begin has been repeated which has been continued for us to
remember the style of the story and morale which builds rhythm and
flow and every scene was a different day which was cut quick for us to
know what we are in for and tension
