Issues with claiming female-led film as feminist due to problematic portrayal
1. Of course I was pleased the film included a
female protagonist, and some of the issues
that were brought up were things that need
to be more accessible in the public sphere,
encouraging women that it’s okay to enjoy
their bodies and experience life to the full
2. However, to suggest it is a feminist film
is completely misleading, as there
were some problems with the film.
3. Firstly, the female protagonist isn’t a
particularly strong character, and the
fact there was no dialogue took away
her voice, inadvertently creating the
generic passive character
4. which is extremely out-dated. This
wouldn’t be so much of a problem if
the male character was equal in the
film, but he is not.
5. The one time we see a male character
it is him subduing the female character
and it is him, clearly leading her up
stair, showing male domination.
