How effective is the combination of
your main product and ancillary texts?
Making the music video for ‘A certain romance’, a digipak and
magazine advert has allowed me to use synergy in order to make
the final product greater. This means all three products connect for
a benefit overall. Firstly, people will be able to watch my music
video for the song ‘A certain romance’ by Arctic Monkeys. The
video contains a narrative with characters in it. By watching the
video the audience will get to know the main character well as he
is in the video for nearly every second of it and there are plenty of
shots of him from different angles and distances.
When the audience sees the digipak, they are liable to watch the
music video. If they have watched the video before seeing the
digipak, for example on YouTube, then they will be able to
recognise what song the digipak is. This is because in the music
video, the protagonist, wears a suit for a part of the video, and also
uses his phone. In relation to the digipak, on the front cover there
is the main character from my music video standing in the same
suit looking down at his phone.
On the inside panels of the digipak, there are also images from the
music video suggesting the narrative of the video. This means, if
the consumer hasn’t seen the video, the images will make them
more interested in the product as they will be more likely to see
what its about.
By looking at the magazine advert, people will see
that it says the band and album name which is also
said on the digipak. On both the digipak, and
magazine advert the text is clear therefore it should
be easy to notice. The magazine advert advertises the
digipak, and the digipak advertises the music video.
On the magazine advert there is a picture, a shot
from the music video so it links in with the digipak
and video. For people who have watched the video
before seeing the advertisement but are looking to
buy the digipak, they could see the magazine cover
and recognise the picture, or at least what its about.
From the picture on the magazine advert it is easy to
see it about a couple and romance which relates to
the song name ‘A certain romance’. On the advert it
says the digipak includes the song, as its white text
on a black background its easy to see. Also on the
back cover of the digipak, there is a logo of the
record company which is also on the magazine
advert, therefore its recognisable.

To increase the synergy of my product, I think the image of the main character in the video
should be on the magazine advert just like on the digipak. It wouldn’t have to be the same
image as the one on the digipak, but just of the character in the suit. This is because it would
make it more recognisable for people. It would allow them to realise that the product the
magazine is advertising includes a male character in a suit on the digipak. As the image on the
advert of the couple holding hands suggest what the product is about, but doesn’t make it
clear what it looks like.
Overall, I am happy about the final products as I used different conventions and convincing real media text. As
the music video worked out well although it was challenging because the song is just over five minutes long, and
most song are around three minutes long. Also I have used many different camera shot and angles, and editing
techniques, such as slow motion to add a good effect to the video. I think the digipak looks good, it look creative
with the text on the front cover because they look like they are written on the brick. Also there is synergy
between it, the video and magazine advert. The magazine advert could have one improvement (the picture) but
it is also successful, because it includes the information it needs in order to advertise the digipak.

Also on the back cover of the digipak, there is a logo of the record company which is also on the magazine advert, therefore its recognisable. (Part of the digipak back cover)
  • 4. To increase the synergy of my product, I think the image of the main character in the video should be on the magazine advert just like on the digipak. It wouldn’t have to be the same image as the one on the digipak, but just of the character in the suit. This is because it would make it more recognisable for people. It would allow them to realise that the product the magazine is advertising includes a male character in a suit on the digipak. As the image on the advert of the couple holding hands suggest what the product is about, but doesn’t make it clear what it looks like.
  • 5. Overall, I am happy about the final products as I used different conventions and convincing real media text. As the music video worked out well although it was challenging because the song is just over five minutes long, and most song are around three minutes long. Also I have used many different camera shot and angles, and editing techniques, such as slow motion to add a good effect to the video. I think the digipak looks good, it look creative with the text on the front cover because they look like they are written on the brick. Also there is synergy between it, the video and magazine advert. The magazine advert could have one improvement (the picture) but it is also successful, because it includes the information it needs in order to advertise the digipak.
