How effective is the
combination of your
main product and
ancillary texts?
Our task
Our task that we were given at the start of the year
was to make a music video for an already existing
song. Alongside this we had to make a digipak for an
album by the artist that we had to make up and a
magazine advert, advertising the digipak.
Digipak
Before I started making my digipak I researched
existing digipaks to see what kind of conventions
they follow. This was useful as I used this research
to model my own digipak around. Here is some of
the research I carried. I analysed existing digipaks in
terms of what they had on each panel, how they
conformed to conventions and how they appealed to
audiences.
My digipak
This is my final digipak. As you can see I have 6 slides, a front cover, a back
Cover with my track listings, two CD covers and two extra covers. I have included
All of the conventional panels. I feel like this digipak is an accurate representation of
Who our artist really is. The settings are very conventional for our genre and link to
The video itself as we actually filmed in some of these places.
My magazine advert
This is my magazine advert. I have included a shot of the main artist himself.
I have included links to the artists social media pages which is conventional of
These kinds of adverts. I have also included where people can buy the album from.
On top of all this I have included a picture of the digipak front cover so that
Audiences know what to look for if they want to buy the album.
Similarities between our
video and my digipak
One similarity between my digipak and our video is
the use of our artist logo. To make our artist more
recognisable we created our own logo for him. This
means that whenever audiences see this logo they
instantly associate with King J. Furthermore, we
have King J making a triangle with his hands in the
video to represent this. The origin of his logo comes
from his record label “Tri-Angle”. This is another
example of record label demands.
Another similarity between my video and digipak are
the settings. Some of the settings we took our
photos at for our digipak were very conventional of
the genre and so we decided to film there in our
actual video. This was perhaps the strongest
combination from my digipak and music video as we
had many good comments from feedback about the
settings. The colour scheme used on my digipak is
fairly similar to that of our music video too.
Overall, I feel that the combination of my ancillary
texts and our main product was effective in
communicating our genre and our artist. I tried to
make elements of my digipak consistent to our
actual video including colour schemes. Also, the
costume and settings of the photos from our
photoshoot and our video are consistent and very
conventional of our genre. The digipak is also
designed in order to create recognition for King J
and to ensure that as soon as audiences see it
they instantly recognise the artist and his work.
The digipak is essentially promotion for our video.
