1. HOW EFFECTIVE IS THE
COMBINATION OF YOUR MAIN
PRODUCT AND ANCILLARY TEXTS?
Evaluation Question 2
2. Music Video and Digipak
Throughout my music video, there are numerous shots aimed at establishing the
location. These shots are consistently used to engage the audience, I have further
established the location by having numerous different scenes from my video placed.
Having photos that are stills from my music videos means there is a very effective
link between the two products as these will be recognised by a viewing audience.
The theme of the digipak is taken directly from the video, the subject of nature and
light is represented across the video and digipak. The photo that lies behind the CD
tray somewhat personifies the emotion portrayed within the video.
The presence of the main actress on the product
creates a direct link between the two products, making
it instantly recognisable for an audience.
The images on the digipak have been brightened and
enhanced to give another link to the light that is seen
throughout the music video.
3. Music Video and Advert
Firstly, the image that appears on my advert is a screenshot from my music video,
this instantly creates a link between the two products. While the image has been
brightened and the background blurred, it will still be recognisable to audiences
giving an effective appearance. Yet again the same character appears on this
advert as in the video to allows the audience to instantly make the link. However,
to create some mystery, the character is facing away from the camera, this will
hopefully engage audiences who will question why this is the case.
Arguably, the image sums up the emotion and plot of the music video. The artist
looking into the distance, questioning her decisions up to this point and looking
for a way forward. For people that have already seen
the video, this connection should hopefully be
recognised.
4. Digipak and Advert
Again, the most obvious link between these two products is the appearance of the
same actress. This continued character means that both products can be instantly
recognised as a unit, this effectively markets the product as both are tied together.
The use of the same fonts is very effective as they look like
professional designs. Real-world products would use the
same font across album covers and advertisements as they
can be easily linked. Having the title of the song as the most
prominent text on both products means it is the first thing
audiences see, they will remember it, creating interest and a
selling-point.
Having the Def Jam logo appear on both effectively
transmits information of Rihanna’s record label.
Both products’ photos have been been edited somewhat,
making them more eye-catching for audiences.
5. Music Video, Advert and Digipak
Across all three products, there are definitely some
similarities. The narrative that is present within the
music video is somewhat presented in the both
ancillary texts, this recurrence effectively gives the
audience understanding of the product as a whole.
The appearance of the same female across all three
products effectively makes the other two products
instantly recognisable once a first has been viewed.
While some colours have been enhanced on the
ancillary texts, location also ties the three products
together effectively.
