2. Relationship
between
MusicVideo
andDigipak
In order to create a professional, industry standard
product there had to be a clear relationship between
my music video and my digipak. The most obvious
theme that shows a clear relationship between my
main product and ancillary text is that of the location
and protagonist used. On both the front and back of my
digipak the artist himself can be seen pictured in the
same location as where the music video was shot.
Through featuring the same location used for filming
on my digipak not only is the theme of the song itself
reinforced (‘Down by the River’ being associated with
the outdoors) but it starts to build the foundations of a
brand identity being created as both products share
similar properties. It should be mentioned that the
panels within my digipak feature images which were
not shot at the same location as where my music video
was set. The main reason for this was down to the
digipak wanting to share the artist in other situations
that weren’t directly linked to the music video, hence
why different locations and costumes were used. In
doing this, however, the brand identity of the artist
was still instilled to the audience as it increased the
relatability of the product to the audience.

betweenMusic
Videoand
Digipak
The song ‘Down by the River’ has clear
connotations to being in the outdoors, not only
is this evident through the title of the song but
also the lyrics of the song. As mentioned on the
previous slide, both the front and back of the
digipak feature images that show the artist in
the same location as the music video. In doing
this the digipak itself shows a clear
relationship to the music video and enables the
audience to understand that both products
relate to each other. To add to that, the artist
can be seeing wearing the same clothing on the
front and back of the digipak, this clothing is
also worn in the main product itself, this
further confirms the relationship between both
products. Once the lyrics of the song are
analysed and depicted it is evident to see that
there is an ideology/ theme of love. I opted to
name the album title ‘Dimensions’ as this
reflected the sense of love that is created
within the music video. Furthermore, as only
one character features in the music video the
title could be interpreted by audiences as a way
of reflecting the lover that the lyrics of the song
imply.
4. Relationship
betweenMusic
Videoand
Digipak
Across all panels of my digipak a simple block white colour format
is used. An image has then be placed underneath and cut through
in order to give the appearance of different dimensions and
therefore directly linking back to the title of the album. The front
image shows the protagonist looking over the reservoir, holding an
acoustic guitar, while the rear image shows the artist looking out
into the distance while standing on a bridge. Both have a clear
connotation and relationship with water, further cementing the
theme of water to the audience and linking back to the title of the
song. To add to that, as the front of the digipak shows the prop of
an acoustic guitar, the audience gain an insight into what genre of
music the final product could be from before actually having to
view the product. In addition to this, both the front and rear
images show the artist wearing an all black costume.
Stereotypically, indie/ alternative artists are often associated with
wearing this coloured clothing and by playing on this stereotype
audiences can easily assume what genre and style of music that
the song is based upon due to the digipak design. My record label
can also be located at the back of the digipak ,above the barcode.
The reason this was implemented was in order to conform to that
of real life industry standard products from my genre, which
feature the record label logo on the back of there digipaks. To add
to that, I also designed my digipak with the song titles located at
the back of the digipak. The track list appears below an image
centrally framed (this image following the same format as the
other images on the digipak.) The reason I placed the track list in
a central position under the image was to build up a house style
across all panels of the digipak, whereas placing my track lists to
the left of the digipak and down the side would have broke the
uniform design. I also opted to have the image that has been sliced
through, appear on the sides of the digipak panel. Again, this was
done in order to create a house style across the products, in the
terms of the dimensional editing I have used on the images.
5. Relationship
betweenMusic

Magazine
Advert
Similarly to my digipak, there is a clear correlation with the
themes and motifs present that feature within my music
video being present in my magazine advert. The main
element that can be seen across both of these products is
that of the featuring of the artist on the front of the
magazine advert, in order to try and create/ reinforce a
sense of artist and brand identity to the audience. It should
also be mentioned that a very similar style of image is used
on both the front of my digipak and magazine advert, this
showing the artist holding a guitar while surrounded by
trees. Not only does this reinforce the links to the song itself
and the outdoor theme associated with it. But also shows a
relationship with the indie/ alternative genre as the props
featured in the image are stereotypical of this genre.
Furthermore, the camera angle used on the magazine
advert matches that of the camera angle used for my images
on the digipak. This being a medium close up. By using this
camera angle across both my ancillary products a common
house style/ theme is presented. Allowing for audiences to
easily identify that my magazine advert and digipak link
together. It should also be mentioned that medium close ups
were a camera angel which featured numerous times within
my music video. As both my music video and magazine
advert contain the same style of camera angles it reinforces
the connection between the two products. The images used
in my magazine advert contain the same props and costume
that are present in my music video. By using the same
guitar in my magazine advert and music video it further
reinforced the sense of continuity between the products.
6. Relationship
betweenMusic
Videoand
Magazine
Advert
The final product I produced has a narrative element
which creates the idea that the artist has come out of
what was once a relationship. Not only does this theme
link directly back to the title of my album,
‘Dimensions’, but is reinforced within my magazine
advert due to the splitting of the image in order to give
a dimension appearance. This format is also followed
within my digipak in order to enable the audience to
identify a relationship between my music video and
ancillary texts.
A strong sense of brand identity was created between
both ancillary texts and music video. However, in order
to further bolster this identity the ancillary texts could
have featured the use of picture editing in order to
make the products seem more relatable to the indie/
alternative genre. For example, my music video
contains a chorus where the footage overlaps in order
to create an almost trippy vibe to the video. This
element could have been recreated through the images
used on both the digipak and magazine advert. Despite
this, it should be commented that through the use of
the props such as a guitar and the clothing my artist
wore the indie genre of music was still evident within
my images.
7. Whyisit
importantto
havean
effective
combination?
Through incorporating different factors across all three of
my products it not only shows a clear correlation and
relationship between the products but it also helps to build
a brand identity for the artist. The use of the same style of
images across both ancillary texts and the featuring of the
same props and costumes within my music video and my
ancillary texts reinforces the artists individuality to the
viewer. While simultaneously building a relationship
between the products so audiences can easily identify that
products are related to each other. Throughout my music
video there is a heavy use of a performance style of music
video. In order to portray this in my ancillary texts I opted
to have the artist wearing the same garments featured in
the music video and use the same props (guitar) in order for
the viewer to be able to clearly distinguish the genre of
music the artist is from as well as the style of music video.
As previously stated, this was carried out in order to build
the profile of the brand identity of the artist.
The overall theme of my music video is that of love. Not only
is this due to the lyrics of the song but also due to the style
of music video I created and the use of a dimensional style
theme across my ancillary texts. This is then left quite
ambiguous for the audience to interpret, however, the main
idea that may have been picked up is the theme of a broken
up relationship between the artist and the former lover the
lyrics imply.
8. Whatisthe
housestyleand
layoutofyour
ancillarytexts?
As the two images to the left show there is a
clear relationship and house style between the
two products. Both feature the same style of
layout, this being a white block placed
centrally over an image, with bits of the block
rasterized and removed in order to reveal the
image below. As the images below show this
format was used across all my ancillary
products in order to build up the brand identity
as well as improving the overall
professionalism of the product. The text used
across both products as well shares the same
property, this being the use of bold, full capital
lettering for the title of the album ‘Dimensions,’
followed up with a kerned, non bold font that
appears in a considerably smaller font for the
artist name. Not only does this conform to
typical codes and conventions of real life
products, which feature the artist name in a
smaller font than the album name. But it
furthermore shows the professionalism of both
products and enables the audience to clearly
see how both products compliment each other
due to the same format and typography being
used.
