The media product represents young black teens both positively and negatively. The contents page image portrays a negative stereotype through the model's crossed arms and hat, while the front page image shows a positive representation of a black teen in a suit but with a messy tie. However, the interview reveals the model has overcome challenges as a young man. The target audience was young black males, depicted through imagery of the models dressed as musicians they admired and posing with girls in different outfits to convey different meanings to viewers.
2. How does your media product represent
particular social groups?
3. My media group represents young teens black teens in
both a positive and negative manner. The use of image
and the way the model is modelling with his arms
crossed, wearing a hat (on the contents page) portrays
the negative stereotype of young black boys wearing
hoods and causing trouble. On the front page the
image used portrays a negative and positive light on
young black male teenagers, as he’s wearing a suit yet
his tie is still messy. However I defy this stereotype in the
interview. We can see that the model is actually a
young, inspirational black male. Who’s gone from a
young trouble-some teen to an older mature young
man.
4. In the beginning I originally wanted to apply to both genders
from the age of 14-19 years of age, however I discovered that
including a female audience would have been hard to
successfully achieve. So I ended up targeting only young males
mainly of a black race as stereotypically would attract them
quicker than a white male of the same age. I targeted my
audience via use of imagery and the props worn. I did this by
asking two of my male friends who are into this genre of music to
dress close to the musicians they admired. I asked the boy on the
front cover to dress as though he had won an award. I then took
lots of pictures with him standing next to a girl in a formal gown; I
took more pictures of him next to a girl in casual clothing and
then more pictures of him next to a girl in a shorter more casual
dress. I did this so I could look at all the different pictures and see
which one I felt was more appropriate. By setting the boy with
this mentality, I was able to change the audience’s view on him.
Taking a picture with him and a girl in a formal dress meant that
the audience could see his smooth talking and the fact that he
was successful as he was wearing a suit and had a beautiful girl
in a stunning dress on his arm. By taking pictures of him next to a
girl with a shorter dress on his arm meant that the target
audience would see him in his old ‘bad boy’ manner conveying
the idea that he got a lot of sex, money and alcohol. Taking
pictures of him alone in suits. Meant that the audience could see
his success and how he did it alone. He worked hard to get to
the top and now he’s stood there alone successful with his
5. For the contents page image, I took a lot of
time thinking about what picture to actually
use. I asked my friend to dress just like a
rapper he admired did. I then had him
posing with girls in jeans, crop-tops and
baseball caps. To represent that girls too
like this genre. I then began to ask him to
strike a ‘gang-sign’ type pose. I felt that this
would represent the stereotypes they faced
and it would defy yet conform to this
stereotype as this male was in a gang and
the other wasn’t.
