1. Question 4Who would be the audience for your media product?Question 5How did you attract/address your audience?
2. Questionnaire I asked a total of 20 people (10 males and 10 females) to tell me who their favourite singer /band was. As I am targeting young adults for my media product (17+). These are my results: From asking the 20 individuals their favourite artists I was able to identify that the young adults that I asked actually do prefer indie/folk bands with Florence + The Machine being favourites of 5 females and 2 males, in comparison, Mumford & Sons being favourites of 4 males and 3 females.
3. I have decided to target my music magazine at the young adult demographic (17+). I have chosen to aim at this audience because from my questionnaire and from personal experiences the music genre of folk and indie is a popular choice for both males and females at this period of time. From researching a variety of other music magazine I have been unable to find a magazine that is solely based upon the folk genre of music, which is increasingly popular nowadays.
4. Social activities my audience may be interested in include: Going to gigs and festivals, social networking websites like Facebookand Twitter, vlogging/watching videos on YouTube, going to nightclubs or house parties, shopping, studying at college or attending university, part-time/full-time job, cinema, playing music, jam sessions, listening to music. I have aimed to use these activities to my advantage when producing my magazine. I have included cover lines on my front cover which would attract my target audience, ‘IOW, GLASTONBURY, READING LINE-UP’. My audience would be interested in attending festivals and most people who are wanting to go to the upcoming festivals are eager to know who will be the main acts. Also, the cover line ‘THE NEW FACES OF 2011’. Young adults are very interested in knowing before anyone else who will be the years up and coming new artist.
5. I chose a model that I knew already like the genre of folk/indie but also was able to play instruments from the genre : guitar, ukulele... The ukulele being a specific instrument many fans of folk have because it is cheap and easy to learn and use, this being a main reason I wanted to include the ukulele on the front cover and on my double-page spread but also the model I used can actually play the ukulele so I used this to my advantage because it looks a lot more realistic and believable to the audience. Even though I used a female to portray mainly within my magazine I didn’t want the magazine to be perceived as a girly ‘pop’ magazine but because of the prop and mise-en-scene used both males and females can be drawn to the model to have a better unisex appeal.
6. On my double-page spread and front cover I asked my model to simply play her music and would photograph her doing so. I found that this made the image down-to-earth and that the artist is passionate about her career. From viewing other images of folk/indie artists when they were photographed for magazine covers like Q they didn’t always make direct eye-contact to the camera and would be photographed playing their instruments . To attract the audience I wanted t o make the photograph look as real as possible and that my model was actually playing it, this is what would make the reader interested. Another way to attract the audience was using direct address, in particular, ‘THE 50 BEST ALBUMS VOTED BY YOU’. This would make the audience know that they can get involved with the magazine .
7. The colour scheme of my magazine challenged the normal conventions that magazines tend to use, music magazines such as: Q and NME, use the red, black and white theme a lot of the time as they colours stand out and draw the attention of the reader. My magazine did not use these three colours. The three predominant colours I used whilst making the magazine were, burgundy purple, mustard yellow and white. These colours are more relaxing and are not as striking as the conventional colours. I decided to break away from the normal colour schemes of Q and NME as then my magazine wouldn’t be original and would blend with these magazines on the shelves. The colours I have chosen reiterate the genre of music as they suit the folk and indie feel. The pricing of the magazine was important as during this particular time, young adults can find it difficult when dealing with their funds, this is why I made the price of Capo, £2.99. This is £1 less than the indie/rock magazine, Q.
