2. How does your
media product
represent particular
social groups?
The social group I used, dress like this so I
wanted my model to wear something
similar. I used a girl to show that the
magazine is for girls and boys because it’s a
girl in a boy’s style. My inspiration for my
photo shoot was mainly on Chris Brown
and his style and as shown in the pictures I
think I managed to achieve that look well in
a girl form. I took aspects of Justin Bieber’s
style in the picture shown as my model was
wearing blue ripped jeans. The people that
dress like this are stereotyped as listening
to R&B music and using slang in their
speech.
This social group that dress like this are usually
around the ages of 16-27. So I made my target
audience between the ages of 18-25 because the
style of the cover star will attract them to buy and
look at the rest of the magazine as they can relate
to the clothing and if they’re into the R&B/Pop
genre, they can relate to that as well.
The ethnicity of the audience, which is black afro
Caribbean people, is represented through having a
cover star which is black African. This may attract
more black people to buy it as they feel like they
can relate to the cover star more especially if they
also dress like that and follow some of the
stereotypes I have portrayed.
I think I challenged the stereotype that people of this social
group speak in slang all the time because in the journalism on
my DPS, I didn’t really use slang. Standard English was mainly
used to answer the questions. I think this helps to create a
positive representation of my target audience because slang is
often stereotyped with being uneducated and a trouble maker
so by me not following all of the stereotypes, it helps to give a
better view on this social group.
