            Many employees today look for
             people who could communicate
             well
            As a result, developing
             presentation skills has become
             an important part of any course
             of study.

Time
   How much of time devoted to my
    presentation ( depth of the talk
    depends on the time)
   If some one has already taken
    portion of time, how do you manage
    with the available time
   How to use the time effectively on
    different sub topics. Some times
    more time used for background
    factors than the topic in issue
   Not to exceed the time limit. Keep
    your presentation to the point.

    opening and concluding remark

How to prepare slides

   Use less than six sentences in
    one slide
   Have only appropriate graphs,
    figures and pictures
   Use background colours that
    would not blur the main
    message
   Use only appropriate animation
    on slides
   Be brief on slides and explain

   Use only the information that
    you are going to cite in the
    presentation in slides
   If you use foreign words,
    accronyms explain them
   Jargon could be used only if
    audience know about it.
Get ready for the worse
  There could be a electricity failure
 The Multi media may not work
 Computer may not work
 Your CD containing your presentation may
   not read or go blank
 Slide Projector lamp may burst
 Handouts may not come in time

Practice
   Find out the style that suits your
    personality and the situation
   Adapt to the situation depending on
    the circumstances
   The style depends largely on the
    way you normally talk
   Do not present as if you are reading
    a book or paper without any
    emphasis on punctuations
   Tell it like a story- remember
    Seeyage Katha “ ekaparatama
    Walahek Penna” Use tone.
   Speak with a moderate speed
   Never use artificial accent
Practice about how to use
your body language
 Using your hands
      invite the audience
   accept your point by
   having your palms
   upwards
      Avoid closing your
   hands firmly as this can
   be a sign of
   aggressiveness
  Avoid rubbing your
   hands – sign of
   Avoid pointing one finger at
    audience- sign of warning
   Do not put your hands in
    the pocket when
    presenting
Your mobile phone

  If possible say at the beginning
“ Oh I am going to off this as it
   may disturb all of us” This will
   send a message to the audience
   also to off the phone or at least
   put on the vibration mode
 Ensure that your phone is off.
 ( not even vibration)
 Never answer the phone
Using facial expression and eye
brow
   Use your eye brows to articulate
    your feelings
   Move your head around and
    look people in the eye. Do not
    focus only on one person, few or
    one side of the audience.
   Do not always direct your talk to
    the head table or the leader or
    guest
   Look at people who do not give
Controlling your physical and
psychological status
   Move around if possible
   Have an active outlook
   Face the audience always rather
    than the board or the screen behind
    you
     Do not get emotional
     Do not get irritated with the
    audience
     Do not get into extremes
    Admit your mistakes and sincerely
    thank for pointing out.
Involve the audience

    Show you are interested in
     audience
    Ask them to comment
    Ask them few easy questions
    Crack a decent joke
    Give a compliment to
     volunteers who answer your
     questions
    Give a handout
Judge the status of the
audience while you are talking
    Are they with you ( facial
     expression, nodding, smiling)
    Are they sleeping, yawning or
     doing some other thing while you
     are talking
    Are they talking with each other
     while you are talking
    Are they talking over the mobile
     or playing games or sending
     SMS’s
      Are they looking disappointed
How to draw attention of the
disinterest
   Ask questions
   Say that no one is going to
    sleep
   Give a point to discuss with the
    person seated to next
   Say a word in half and let the
    audience complete
   Bring in a funny photo/ joke
Develop your language

   You must use the appropriate word
    that the audience can understand
   Never use difficult words when
    simple words are there
   Do not use slang ( wanna , gonna)
   Avoid fillers- ah, em, er, well,
    basically, you know, like, kind of, of
    course, more or less, by the way,
    don’t you know etc.
   Do not worry to use Sinhalese or
    Tamil words or phrases when you
    are giving a talk in English in Sri

Dress Appropriately

   Attention is on you- so dress
    suitably
   Formal- Lounge
   Informal- Smart Casual
   Never over dress with too much
    of Jewellery, make up etc.
Rehearse

   Stand in front of a mirror and present
    yourself
   Repeat it several times until you rectify
    your errors and build confidence
   Make the presentation in front of a
    friend
   Ask him to make a candid evaluation
   Try and video your talk and see how
    you perform
   More you practice more you do well.

  • 1. Making Great Presentations  Conquer nerves and stage fright  Master powerful communication skills  Deliver presentations with confidence and style
  • 2. However much you are educated, if you cannot present facts and figures well you have a big problem at hand.  Many employees today look for people who could communicate well  As a result, developing presentation skills has become an important part of any course of study.  Marks are given for presentations in the Universities

  • 6. Plan  Understand the audience  Background  Knowledge  Experience  Needs  Goals
  • 7. Plan… Find out the purpose of your talk Is it to  Inform  Persuade  Motivate to action  Sell  Teach  Train
  • 8. Plan… Draw up a logical framework  Define the topic  Current status  Issues and core problems  Possible answers/ alternatives  Challenges  Action Plan
  • 9. Plan…. Time  How much of time devoted to my presentation ( depth of the talk depends on the time)  If some one has already taken portion of time, how do you manage with the available time  How to use the time effectively on different sub topics. Some times more time used for background factors than the topic in issue  Not to exceed the time limit. Keep your presentation to the point.
  • 11. Prepare  How much of information I have  Researching the subject  Where to get information  Find out or develop a good opening and concluding remark  File the information in an accessible storage  If electronic storage is used at least store in two mediums
  • 12. Prepare…. Process data and get only the relevant in right quantities in presentable manner  Graphs  Pictures  Diagrams  Percentages  Ratios  Flow charts  Analysis  Be creative
  • 13. How to prepare slides  Use less than six sentences in one slide  Have only appropriate graphs, figures and pictures  Use background colours that would not blur the main message  Use only appropriate animation on slides  Be brief on slides and explain

  • 23. Prepare….  Use only the information that you are going to cite in the presentation in slides  If you use foreign words, accronyms explain them  Jargon could be used only if audience know about it.
  • 24. Get ready for the worse  There could be a electricity failure  The Multi media may not work  Computer may not work  Your CD containing your presentation may not read or go blank  Slide Projector lamp may burst  Handouts may not come in time Answer : In addition to electronic stuff have rough sketch. That could save your day.

Practice  Find out the style that suits your personality and the situation  Adapt to the situation depending on the circumstances  The style depends largely on the way you normally talk  Do not present as if you are reading a book or paper without any emphasis on punctuations  Tell it like a story- remember Seeyage Katha “ ekaparatama Walahek Penna” Use tone.  Speak with a moderate speed  Never use artificial accent
  • 27. Practice about how to use your body language Using your hands  invite the audience accept your point by having your palms upwards  Avoid closing your hands firmly as this can be a sign of aggressiveness  Avoid rubbing your hands – sign of
  • 28. Avoid pointing one finger at audience- sign of warning  Do not put your hands in the pocket when presenting
  • 29. Your mobile phone  If possible say at the beginning “ Oh I am going to off this as it may disturb all of us” This will send a message to the audience also to off the phone or at least put on the vibration mode  Ensure that your phone is off. ( not even vibration)  Never answer the phone
  • 30. Using facial expression and eye brow  Use your eye brows to articulate your feelings  Move your head around and look people in the eye. Do not focus only on one person, few or one side of the audience.  Do not always direct your talk to the head table or the leader or guest  Look at people who do not give
  • 31. Controlling your physical and psychological status  Move around if possible  Have an active outlook  Face the audience always rather than the board or the screen behind you  Do not get emotional  Do not get irritated with the audience  Do not get into extremes  Admit your mistakes and sincerely thank for pointing out.
  • 32. Involve the audience  Show you are interested in audience  Ask them to comment  Ask them few easy questions  Crack a decent joke  Give a compliment to volunteers who answer your questions  Give a handout

Judge the status of the audience while you are talking  Are they with you ( facial expression, nodding, smiling)  Are they sleeping, yawning or doing some other thing while you are talking  Are they talking with each other while you are talking  Are they talking over the mobile or playing games or sending SMS’s  Are they looking disappointed
  • 34. How to draw attention of the disinterest  Ask questions  Say that no one is going to sleep  Give a point to discuss with the person seated to next  Say a word in half and let the audience complete  Bring in a funny photo/ joke

Develop your language  You must use the appropriate word that the audience can understand  Never use difficult words when simple words are there  Do not use slang ( wanna , gonna)  Avoid fillers- ah, em, er, well, basically, you know, like, kind of, of course, more or less, by the way, don’t you know etc.  Do not worry to use Sinhalese or Tamil words or phrases when you are giving a talk in English in Sri
  • 38. Dress Appropriately  Attention is on you- so dress suitably  Formal- Lounge  Informal- Smart Casual  Never over dress with too much of Jewellery, make up etc.
  • 39. Rehearse  Stand in front of a mirror and present yourself  Repeat it several times until you rectify your errors and build confidence  Make the presentation in front of a friend  Ask him to make a candid evaluation  Try and video your talk and see how you perform  More you practice more you do well.
