Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. recognisable straight away by the reader. It is bright
yellow to stand out and match the colour scheme of
the cover. Large Block font with the main image
cutting into the middle of the text. Text is in a
smashed style which is part of the house style of
‘KERRANG!’
Model credit
The model credit is incorporated in the main cover
line this is so it can catch the eye of the reader and
fans of the band to attract more audience.
Coverlines
The coverlines all mention different band names to
the main cover line. Example ‘WHAT ARE
PARAMORE SHOCKED AT?’ This is so the magazine
can appeal to a wider audience. There is a coverline
at the top of the page highlighted in red which
contrasts the yellow and white text it contains this
would stand out and catch the eye of a lot of people
attracting audience. Another coverline is the 7
posters used that are free with the magazine this
will attract more audience because you get
something for free.
Main cover line
The main cover line is located in the centre of the
page. It cross the weak fallow area and terminal
area however the cover line is in Big bold red letters
with the model credit which also attracts the eye of
the reader. The text on a white background so the
colour of the text contrasts with background.
Colour
The colours scheme used in this magazine is red,
yellow, black and white. The reds signify danger and
rebellion. The yellows on page stand out more from
the rest of the colours the yellow could signify joy for
being rebellious or also link with danger. All these
fonts contrast each other and stand out this creates
an informal image which makes the magazine more
fun and playful.
Typefaces
Sans serif fonts are used on the magazine to show
informality and playfulness. All the words are on the
cover are slanted at an angled this again shows
informality and suits the target audience which are
rock fans.
Photography Lighting
The lighting used on the main image is quite
high key this helps illuminate the lead singer of
the band attracting people who are interested
in ‘Green Day’. The lighting helps the text stand
out more and creates more of a fun feel to the
magazine.
Design Principles Used?
This Magazine follows the Guttenberg design
principle with the masthead being in the primary
optical area so it is the first thing someone will read.
The rule of thirds is also applied to this cover as all
the cross sections are covered and the main image is
composed to fit the rule of third.
House Style
The house style of KERRANG! Is the smashed up masthead symbolising rebellion linked to
the rock genre of music. The title is always the same font and the same size on the majority
of the magazines. The magazine also has a banner across the top of the front cover this is a
coverline that is made to stand out to the reader. The layout of the coverlines is also
repeated on the other magazine issues.

Main image
The main image is framed by the text. The image is
of the lead singer of the band that the main article
is based on. It uses direct audience address so the
models eyes stand out and are always on the
reader. The composition of the image is not in a
traditional way the pose by the model is a jokey and
informal appealing more to younger readers.
