The world is running short of time and option at social and economic front in view of high risks related with global warming and climate change, which is a result of the “enhanced greenhouse effect” mainly due to human induced release of greenhouse gases (GHGs) into the atmosphere (IPCC, 2007). The GHGs inventories are going on all over the world and every possible method to control them are being recognized and evaluated. Carbon footprint is a measure of the exclusive total amount of carbon dioxide emissions that is directly and indirectly caused by an activity or is accumulated over the life stages of a product (Pandey et al., 2011). The crop production contributes significantly to global carbon emissions at different stage of crop through the production and use of farm machinery, crop protection chemicals such as herbicides, insecticides and fungicides, and fertilizer (Hillier et al., 2012). Pathak et al.(2010) calculated the carbon footprint of 24 Indian food items and reported that in the production of these food item 87% emission came from food production followed by preparation (10%), processing (2%) and transportation (1%). Maheswarappa et al. (2011) reported that the C-sustainability index (increase in C output as % of C-based input) of Indian agriculture has decreased with time (from 7 in 1960-61 to 3 in 2008-9). Agricultural uses, including both food production and consumption, contribute the most reactive nitrogen (Nr) to the global environment. Once lost to the environment, the nitrogen moves through the Earth’s atmosphere, forests, grasslands and waters causing a cascade of environmental changes that negatively impact both people and ecosystems. Leach et al. (2012) developed a tool called N-Calculator, a nitrogen footprint model that provides information on how to reduce Nr to the environment. Therefore, Quantification of GHGs from each stage of lifecycle of a product gives complete picture of its impact on global warming and provides necessary information to develop low C technology and mitigation option not only for industrial product but also for agricultural produce. The C and N footprint for a given field will allow growers, advisors and policy makers to make informed decisions about management to optimize crop production, biodiversity and carbon footprint.

The webinar explained ongoing and expected impacts of climate change on agriculture and the need to adapt for agriculture to adapt to weather extremes and slow-onset climatic changes. The presenter outlined the concept of climate-smart agriculture and links between adaptation to food security and mitigation using case studies.
Henry Neufeldt (presenter) is Head of the Climate Change Unit at the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) in Nairobi, Kenya. He holds degrees in environmental sciences and soil science from Bayreuth University (Germany) and has worked for many years in natural resource management, soil and water salinization, agricultural development and climate change adaptation and mitigation.
Presentation by JM Marques, Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply, Brazil, at the CCAFS Workshop on Institutions and Policies to Scale out Climate Smart Agriculture held between 2-5 December 2013, in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
NEPAD and CCAFS have joined forces, and with support from GIZ they held a training workshop on 10 –12 April 2018 in Nairobi for participants from Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and Ethiopia. The participants came from Ministries of agriculture, environment, finance, and planning. The overall aim of the training course was to enhance capacities amongst staff and personnel of the various ministries for successful implementation of the agricultural components of the NDCs.The focus of the training was to create a broader understanding of NDCs with the aim that participants have a better understanding of (a) What has to be done? (b) How it can be done? (c) Where can they find further support? and (d) What are existing tools that can be used?
The training consisted of eight modules delivered over three days. The modules included a presentation, question and answer session, and group activity/discussion. The modules delivered were:
Module 1: Intro to UNFCCC initiatives relevant to agriculture
Module 2: Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs)
Module 3: Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) for transformative change
Module 4: Analysis and tools for priority setting in agriculture

The management of acai (Euterpe oleraceae) forests in the estuary of the Amazon River in Brazil provides an important example of locally-developed forest management systems that preserve many ecosystem services (including biodiversity conservation) while also contributing food and other economic products to households. Production of acai fruit has recently expanded greatly as use of the fruit has moved beyond the borders of Amazonia. Local smallholder farmers have responded to the new opportunities by expanding and intensifying cultivation and management of the palm. Such smallholder-developed forest management systems have yet to be recognised by either the conservation or development communities.

This presentation by David Gaveau delivers work undertaken to map land use in Indonesian concessions, including their links with fire and no-deforestation policies.
The goal is to avoid misinterpretations that can arise when other land users within concessions clear land, or fires begin outside concessions and spread within, and so on.
This presentation focuses on the role of intensive livestock farming and monoculture expansion for the environment. It also addresses the issue of land grabbing and grasslands as a carbon sink.

CIFOR scientists are drawing lessons from experiments using Adaptive Collaborative Management (ACM) techniques to increase women’s participation in forestry in Cameroon, Uganda and Nicaragua. As a result, women have been granted land and encouraged to plant trees of their choosing, and have been empowered to take up decision-making positions. This presentation discusses the challenges and opportunities for using ACM to promote gender equity.
CIFOR scientists Anne Marie Tiani and Peter Cronkleton gave this presentation on 20 June 2012 at a Rio+20 side event titled ‘Linking policy, practice and research for gender-responsive change in forestry’. REDD+ effectiveness is commonly assessed through recorded emission reductions within a given period and area. This paper proposes a novel approach to evaluate REDD+ effectiveness, where greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions are determined through self-reporting of changes in land use activities and natural resource management that generate these emissions.
Local community perceptions of change and climate variability in tropical for...CIFOR-ICRAF
According to local people in Mamberamo Raya Regency (in Indonesia’s province of Papua), there have been three types of major events related to climate variability in the past 10 years – flash flooding, extreme heat, and strong winds. The local people have strategies for adapting to climate variability, and given that there is no local meteorological station, their detailed knowledge is an important complementary source of information. This presentation suggests that the similarities and gaps between local knowledge and technical knowledge should be used to direct future research.

The objective of this work is to contribute to valorization de Nephelium lappaceum by the characterization of kinetics of drying of seeds of Nephelium lappaceum. The seeds were dehydrated until a constant mass respectively in a drying oven and a microwawe oven. The temperatures and the powers of drying are respectively: 50, 60 and 70°C and 140, 280 and 420 W. The results show that the curves of drying of seeds of Nephelium lappaceum do not present a phase of constant kinetics. The coefficients of diffusion vary between 2.09.10-8 to 2.98. 10-8m-2/s in the interval of 50°C at 70°C and between 4.83×10-07 at 9.04×10-07 m-8/s for the powers going of 140 W with 420 W the relation between Arrhenius and a value of energy of activation of 16.49 kJ. mol-1 expressed the effect of the temperature on effective diffusivity.
