Described below are nine common critical approaches to the literature. Quotations are from X.J. Kennedy and Dana Gioia’s Literature: An Introduction to Fiction, Poetry, and Drama, Sixth Edition (New York: HarperCollins, 1995), pages 1790-1818.
· Formalist Criticism: This approach regards literature as “a unique form of human knowledge that needs to be examined on its own terms.” All the elements necessary for understanding the work are contained within the work itself. Of particular interest to the formalist critic are the elements of form—style, structure, tone, imagery, etc.—that are found within the text. A primary goal for formalist critics is to determine how such elements work together with the text’s content to shape its effects upon readers.
· Biographical Criticism: This approach “begins with the simple but central insight that literature is written by actual people and that understanding an author’s life can help readers more thoroughly comprehend the work.” Hence, it often affords a practical method by which readers can better understand a text. However, a biographical critic must be careful not to take the biographical facts of a writer’s life too far in criticizing the works of that writer: the biographical critic “focuses on explicating the literary work by using the insight provided by knowledge of the author’s life.... [B]iographical data should amplify the meaning of the text, not drown it out with irrelevant material.”
· Historical Criticism: This approach “seeks to understand a literary work by investigating the social, cultural, and intellectual context that produced it—a context that necessarily includes the artist’s biography and milieu.” A key goal for historical critics is to understand the effect of a literary work upon its original readers.
· Gender Criticism: This approach “examines how sexual identity influences the creation and reception of literary works.” Originally an offshoot of feminist movements, gender criticism today includes a number of approaches, including the so-called “masculinist” approach recently advocated by poet Robert Bly. The bulk of gender criticism, however, is feminist and takes as a central precept that the patriarchal attitudes that have dominated western thought have resulted, consciously or unconsciously, in literature “full of unexamined ‘male-produced’ assumptions.” Feminist criticism attempts to correct this imbalance by analyzing and combatting such attitudes—by questioning, for example, why none of the characters in Shakespeare’s play Othello ever challenge the right of a husband to murder a wife accused of adultery. Other goals of feminist critics include “analyzing how sexual identity influences the reader of a text” and “examin[ing] how the images of men and women in imaginative literature reflect or reject the social forces that have historically kept th ...

New Criticism
A theory that is not concerned with context -- historical, biographical, intellectual; not interested in the intent, affect or meaning of the author or the reader-response reaction of the reader. It is solely concerned with the text itself -- its language and organization; how the text speaks for itself. This approach would involve an intense reading of the text (used mostly in poetry analysis) in which the language and style is closely examined, without giving any consideration to the meaning or emotion of the writer or the reader (also known as Formalist Criticism)
Reader-Response
The reader takes an active role in deciphering meaning. A poem, for instance, has no real existence or meaning until it is read; its meaning can only be discussed by its readers. We differ about interpretations only because our ways of reading differ. It is the reader who applies the code in which the message is written and in this way actualizes what would otherwise remain only potentially meaningful. Hence, the reader is not a passive recipient of an entirely formulated meaning, but an active agent in the making of meaning. The meaning of the text is never self-formulated by the writer; the reader must act upon the textual material in order to produce meaning.
Feminist Theory
Since traditional literary theory is based on patriarchal systems (male-dominated writing and criticism), the feminist critics wish to divorce themselves from any one particular past theory as they focus on redefining literature from a feminine perspective. In so doing, critics focus on female characters; redefining women’s roles in literature and life, and examining the treatment of women in literature from a woman’s point of view.
Historicism
In Historicism, critics view literary history as part of a larger cultural history. Historicists studied literature in the context of social, political and cultural history, and they viewed a nation’s literary history as an expression of its evolving spirit. Studying the particular period of history during which a piece of literature was written could give the reader the necessary background on that writer’s point of view and his influences. Biographical Criticism examines an author's life history in order to gain insight into his literary work.
Psychological Criticism
Critics view literature through the lens of modern psychology, exploring human behavior (conscious, subconscious and unconscious), literary language and symbolism. Psychological criticism often employs three approaches: the creative process of the author, the author's motivation and behavior, and the psychoanalysis of an author's fictional characters. Sociological Criticism examines literature in the cultural, economic and political context in which it is written or received, and explores the relationship between artist and society.

Write a critical analysis of one of the works from weeks 1 or 2. An overview of approaches can be found

, but many are quite straightforward. Psychological, gender, sociological, biographical, and historical are all approaches that many use naturally in viewing a work. However, if your interest lies elsewhere, feel free to choose another approach.
Compare and contrast two of the stories from weeks 1 and 2. Be sure that you have isolated a strong and debatable thesis on which to build the essay. Simply pointing out the differences is not analysis. Toward that end, you may want to focus on a specific element of the stories.
If there's an aspect of the stories from these two weeks that particularly interests you, you may choose your own topic, but you must run it by me first to be sure it is headed in an analytical direction.
Your essay should be formatted in
MLA style
, including double spacing throughout. All sources should be properly cited both in the text and on a works cited page. As with most academic writing, this essay should be written in third person. Please avoid both first person (I, we, our, etc.) and second person (you, your).
In the upper left-hand corner of the paper, place your name, the professor’s name, the course name, and the due date for the assignment on consecutive lines. Double space your information from your name onward, and don't forget a title. All papers should be in Times New Roman font with 12-point type with one-inch margins all the way around your paper. All paragraph indentations should be indented five spaces (use the tab key) from the left margin. All work is to be left justified. When quoting lines in literature, please research the proper way to cite short stories, plays, or poems.
You should use the online APUS library to look for scholarly sources. Be careful that you don’t create a "cut and paste" paper of information from your various sources. Your ideas are to be new and freshly constructed. Also, take great care not to plagiarize.
Whatever topic you choose you will need a debatable thesis. A
thesis
is not a fact, a quote, or a question. It is your position on the topic. The reader already knows the story; you are to offer him a new perspective based on your observations.
Since the reader is familiar with the story, summary is unnecessary. Rather than tell him what happened, tell him what specific portions of the story support your thesis.

Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

Two important ideas:
1.An individual reader’s interpretation usually changes
over time.
2.Readers from different generations and different time
periods interpret texts differently.

asserts that a great deal of meaning in a text lies with how
the reader responds to it.
Focuses on the act of reading and how it affects our
perception of meaning in a text (how we feel at the beginning
vs. the end)
Deals more with the process of creating meaning and
experiencing a text as we read. A text is an experience, not
an object.
The text is a living thing that lives in the reader’s imagination.

∗Imaginary - a preverbal/verbal stage in which a child (around 6-18 months of age) begins to
develop a sense of separateness from her mother as well as other people and objects; however,
the child's sense of sense is still incomplete.
∗Symbolic - the stage marking a child's entrance into language (the ability to understand and
generate symbols); in contrast to the imaginary stage, largely focused on the mother, the
symbolic stage shifts attention to the father who, in Lacanian theory, represents cultural norms,
laws, language, and power (the symbol of power is the phallus--an arguably "gender-neutral"
term).
∗Real - an unattainable stage representing all that a person is not and does not have. Both Lacan
and his critics argue whether the real order represents the period before the imaginary order
when a child is completely fulfilled--without need or lack, or if the real order follows the symbolic
order and represents our "perennial lack" (because we cannot return to the state of wholeness
that existed before language).

∗ desert - spiritual emptiness, death, hopelessness

∗ hero archetype - The hero is involved in a quest (in which he
overcomes obstacles). He experiences initiation (involving a
separation, transformation, and return), and finally he serves as a
scapegoat, that is, he dies to atone.

struggle to define meaning and identity in the face of
alienation and isolation.

Existentialism
∗ Absurd - a term used to describe existence--a world without inherent
meaning or truth.
∗ Authenticity - to make choices based on an individual code of ethics
(commitment) rather than because of societal pressures. A choice
made just because "it's what people do" would be considered
inauthentic.
∗ "Leap of faith" - although Kierkegaard acknowledged that religion was
inherently unknowable and filled with risks, faith required an act of
commitment (the "leap of faith"); the commitment to Christianity
would also lessen the despair of an absurd world.

Existentialism
∗ views each person as an isolated being who is cast into an alien universe,
and conceives the world as possessing no inherent human truth, value,
or meaning.
∗ A person's life, then, as it moves from the nothingness from which it
came toward the nothingness where it must end, defines an existence
which is both anguished and absurd
∗ In a world without sense, all choices are possible, a situation which Sartre
viewed as human beings central dilemma: "Man [woman] is condemned
to be free.“
∗ In contrast to atheist existentialism, Søren Kierkegaard theorized that
belief in God (given that we are provided with no proof or assurance)
required a conscious choice or "leap of faith."

Advantages:
∗ useful for works which do present an obvious moral philosophy
∗ useful when considering the themes of works
∗ does not view literature merely as "art" isolated from all moral
implications
∗ recognizes that literature can affect readers and that the
message of a work is important.
Disadvantages:
∗ such an approach can be too "judgmental"
∗ Some believe literature should be judged primarily (if not solely)
on its artistic merits, not its moral or philosophical content.
46. POSTCOLONIALISM
Meaning resides in text, history, and ideology
Literature is a political tool—those in power decide
what is “art”
Truth is relative
Study the author’s (and reader’s) life & times; locate tensions
between conflicting cultures; explore the “double consciousness”
of colonized & postcolonized writers; observe how colonizers
“refashion” the colonized;
47. Territorialism
∗ Possessions (objects of desire) are metaphors for who we are or
how we wish to be perceived—aspects of the “self.”
∗ Possessions may be tangible or intangible (my car or my idea, e.g.)
∗ They occupy mental space: cognitive, affective, and conative.
∗ These spaces strongly resemble territories—with rights of
ownership, markers, boundaries, rules of “in” and “out,” defensive
strategies, etc.
∗ Look for territorial behaviors; determine the “object(s) of desire”;
what aspect of self is in play? Who owns the object? Who wants it?
Why? Identify the territorial act: acquisition, management, or
defense? How does this information improve our understanding
of the text?
