Long term groundwater pumping in Australia and other coastal lowland areas has led to issues like sea water intrusion into aquifers, groundwater depletion, and land subsidence. Major study locations of these effects include the Kiti Aquifer in Cyprus, Israel, and Washington; Mexico, China, Tanzania, and South Africa; and areas in India, Taiwan, the USA, and Iran. Prolonged pumping can also impact water quality through increased dissolved solids and biological pollutants. Land subsidence has been particularly problematic in Phoenix and Tucson, Arizona, causing earth fissures and damage to well casings.
