The document discusses future challenges and opportunities for the global food supply. By 2050, the world population is projected to reach 9.8 billion people, putting pressure on food production. Currently, over 2 billion people suffer from malnutrition or obesity. New sources of protein and plant-based foods will be needed to sustainably feed more people while protecting the environment. Emerging technologies like cellular agriculture, vertical farming, and single-cell protein could help produce food without using additional land. The food system may also become more distributed, personalized, and high-tech through approaches like 3D food printing and smart vending machines tailored to individual needs and preferences.

The second of four multidisciplinary panel discussions presented in 2016 by the BGFF, Meaty Issues, Meat Friend or Foe? took place on May 17th at the Scripps Research Institute Auditorium. Panelists (listed in detail below) included vegans, omnivores, researchers, a cardiologist, a nutritionist, and a rancher. The discussion was divided into four sections: environment, animal welfare, human health, and technology.

How to better embed crop diversity for resilient sustainable food systems? On April 11th, the DIVERSIFOOD Forum with policy makers and stakeholders addressed this and other fundamental questions to promote cultivated biodiversity. The event was hosted by the European Committee of the Regions in Brussels and involved different stakeholders: from policy makers to researchers, from NGOs to Farmer Organisations and Value chain actors. The session aims to tackle the topic in an introductory, consult-oriented, and deviant way to exercise Future Thinking on the topic. After all, we are living in the great moment of "digital symbiosis" between the branch of Biotechnology and IT technologies."

Alternative proteins perspectives

Alternative proteins could substitute traditional proteins, if production cost can be substantially reduced. Cell-based protein production replicates the processes that occur inside a living animal to produce meat. In precision fermentation, gene-edited microbes can make a wide range of organic molecules, such as protein. Swine and ruminants are more susceptible to disruption than poultry, as their easy-to-substitute mince products make up a higher share of value, while substitution of animal-based proteins also opens up new growth platforms, as growing world population still need proteins, albeit from different sources

Feeding the world is a compelling problem that is expected to worsen. A proposed solution is to increase the number of available calories by diverting more crops from animal feed to direct human consumption. I analyze this approach, taking into account the types of food that can be produced. The results indicate that current crops are rather poor at delivering nutritious food and that repurposing grains is an unlikely solution to world hunger. I will discuss alternative methods by which we can maximize production of nutritious foods and the importance of the ancestral health community’s involvement in the sustainable agriculture movement.

Research Professor Nesli Sözer’s keynote presentation “Oats as an Alternative Protein Source” was part of the Plant Protein Science and Technology Forum's first session, "Processing and Utilization Technologies." The presentation's learning objectives were: opportunities and challenges of using oats as a protein source; fractionation and further modification technologies to improve oat protein functionality and oat protein-based meat and dairy alternative food examples.
