THE DOWNSIDE OF
FACTORY FARMING
AY I S H A S T E WA R T
DEFINITION
• An article written by the Farm Sanctuary states, “Factory farms dominate
U.S food production, employing abusive practices that maximize
agribusiness profits at the expense of the environment, our communities,
animal welfare, and even our health”
THE ENVIRONMENT…
• “Livestock farming produces 37% and 65% of our global methane and
nitrous oxide emissions respectively. Both gases are much more potent
than carbon dioxide”
• According to the film Cowspiracy, Raising cows produce more greenhouse
gases than cars, trains, trucks, boats, and planes combined. This is because
they produce a great amount of methane from their digestion.
PHILIP LYMBERY, HEAD OF
COMPASSION IN WORLD
FARMING.
• “Factory farming is shrouded
in mythology,” according to
an article in The Guardian,
interviewing author Philip
Lymbery.
OUR HEALTH…
• Animals tend to get sick in these
farms, when they do they are given
antibiotics.
• The New York Times even agrees,
they stated that about 75 percent
of the antibiotics used in the
United States and the European
Union countries are used in
agriculture.

resistance-is-not-new-it-existed-long-
before-people-used-drugs-to-kill-
bacteria-115836
THE ANIMALS…
• The Atlantic agrees, stating that Chickens
and turkeys raised for eggs and meat live
nasty, brutish, and short lives. Animals
are jam packed into cages, not having
any room to move around. All they are
left to do is eat all day with plans to grow
big and be sold.
 40 billion chickens are subjected to
overcrowded factory farms every
year
 Many will have a space smaller than
a piece of paper to live in, in barns
crammed with up to 10,000 chickens
 They will spend most of their
lives sitting or lying in their own
waste
 Piglets on factory farms have
their teeth clipped or ground and
tails cut off
 Three out of four mother pigs are
confined to cages the size of a
fridge

WHAT NEXT …
• I do not think this is something that can change overnight. Everyone will need to be
involved and some will need that extra push to get involved. In 2016 Some people
from the Obama administration proposed that meat and chicken products to be
marketed as “humanely raised”.
WHAT NEXT …
• Factory farming is a money business and
the world runs on money. The people
that have seats in congress and who are
passing the bills are aware of this and it
will be hard to completely change things
around. I do not think factory farming is
going anywhere because that will mean
losses for many people.
• Sentient media has offered the world a
solution. This solution is “CLEAN MEAT”.

Editor's Notes

  • #2 Hello, my name is Ayisha Stewart and I will be talking about the downside of factory farming. This will include the negative defects on the animals, environment, and our health. I will also
  • #3 This definition clearly states that animals are being abused in the food production business, it all comes down to the money even though this process is causing harm.
  • #4 Believe it or not, factory farming does take a huge toll on the environment, aiding to pollution. Climate change can possibly increase temperatures and reduce the water supply that is used for the animals and what we use on a daily basis. The increased heat can also damage crops and endanger habitats and natural environments. In addition, Rainforests breath in co2 and release oxygen into the atmosphere. There are so many rainforests being destroyed to build these farms, resulting in a higher co2 output into the atmosphere, which aid in climate change.
  • #5 A myth is a widely held story of false belief or idea. This statement by Phillip lymbery is significant. In the article he does go on to say: Factory farming is an efficient way of producing food, it can be good for the welfare of the animals, and factory farming saves space. These are all to be myths according to the author. Factory farming
  • #6 Too much antibiotics can produce antibiotic-resistant bacteria. When humans consume this meat it can lead to serious illness.
  • #7 Take cows for example, they are being fed huge amounts of corn, which is not an essential part of their diet. It is a cheap and easy way to fatten them up, which can harm their health. It can give them acidosis and when they do become sick they will be given antibiotics. They will either get better and die.
  • #8 The first image shows a pig that has obviously outgrown that confinement space. A bigger space will not be provided. The second image shows chickens packed into cages and can barely move. The third image shows food being shoved down a ducks throat. This is done so the duck can will continue to grow. The last two images show a chicken being debeaked. I can image this feels like someone cutting off one of my toes.
  • #9 This means consumers will know that the animals were not tortured and in horrible conditions. Consumers will have choice on what they want to buy and eat. They said this proposal will aid to the faulty and misleading labeling system. They even had to specify what would qualify as humanely raised. This is because the labeling system would put that on their meat packaging even though it wasn’t true.
  • #10 Sentient says clean meat is cultured or lab grown meat. It is made from cells and is similar to meat from animals. This could possible reduce the negative affects on the environment, animals, and or health but we’ll save this conversation for another time. Thank you.
