US animal feedlots produce a massive amount of manure each minute, requiring thousands of hectares of cropland to absorb the waste from just one large feedlot. It takes much more fossil fuel energy to produce protein from feedlot beef compared to tofu, as 40 calories of fossil fuels are needed for each calorie of beef protein but only 2 calories for each calorie of tofu protein. Reducing consumption of animal products can help decrease environmental threats like greenhouse gas emissions, since animal agriculture is a major contributor to such emissions globally.
