This document proposes an emergency vehicle pre-emption system using smart city concepts. The system would use IoT-enabled traffic signals connected to the cloud to clear traffic for ambulances. When an ambulance driver triggers a switch, the ambulance location and direction are shared to the cloud. The cloud analyzes this data and sends commands to nearby traffic signals based on traffic density to turn signals green and remove congestion along the ambulance's path. Sensors at signals would estimate traffic and the system would consider turning signals green when ambulances are few hundred meters or kilometers away depending on traffic. This would help ambulances reach hospitals more quickly in metropolitan cities with heavy traffic.
