Lionfish are an invasive species in the Atlantic Ocean, as they were likely introduced by aquarium fish being released. They reproduce rapidly, producing up to 2 million eggs per year, and have few natural predators. Lionfish eat many local reef fish and shrimp populations. This threatens biodiversity and commercial fisheries. To address the problem, efforts are being made to create a market for lionfish, educate the public, offer bounties, and fund research to monitor and control the lionfish population.
