This is a guide to PowerPoint 2007 that I created for staff INSET. It covers lots of things from the very basics to the more complex features of the developer tab. I spent a while on this so I thought I would share in case anyone else would find this use
Spreadsheets are often dismissed by developers for not being "proper programming" but that is not true. Since I have shown that spreadsheets are Turing complete, you have no excuse to diss them any longer. In this session, I will implement various algorithms in Excel to show you its power and elegance. After all, spreadsheets are 'live' and functional, so they have everything going for them! Furthermore they are very fit for TDD and rapid prototyping.
Don't fight spreadsheets any longer, but learn to love them.

2. So… Firstly lets answer some questions:
What is a Spread sheet?
A Spread sheet is a tool used to organise
information.
What are they used for?
They are used to make difficult calculations quick
and easy. They can also store lots of information
for a range of purposes.

3. Lets look at some key words.
Cell
This is where we insert information and formulas.
AutoSum
This is a tool used to add many items together quickly.
Microsoft Excel
The software we will be using to create our Spreadsheet.
Chart
A tool used to display the information in a Spreadsheet using a graph.
Sort
A tool used to display information in a certain order.
Sum
The total of a range of cells.
Column
The vertical display of cells in the Spreadsheet.
Row
The horizontal display of cells in the Spreadsheet.
Average
The name given to the formula which calculates the average of an amount of
cells.

4. Inside the Spread Sheet.
Each cell has a name, or reference, so that we can identify it easily.
The name shows the position of the cell, they are written like they
the co-ordinates on a map.
Just like co-ordinates we read the X axis
first then the Y axis.

The X axis is across (a x)
The Y axis is down
This cell is called A1 because it is in
column A row 1

5. Formulae
We use formulae to help up complete calculations
quickly but most of all correctly.
So first we need to enter the data into our spread
sheet for it to be able to calculate values.
To do this we simply click on a cell and type in it!
So lets learn some formulae!
Any formulae start with =!
THIS MUST GO FIRST!
You also need to know the symbols to perform the
calculations. These are displayed in this table:

6. Example
This is Mrs Browns shopping list.
She bought some bread and
some milk. She has inputted the
data into the spreadsheet and
wants to know how much she
spent.
So the formula for this is
=C3+C4
Because we are adding the price
of the Bread, cell C3, with the
price of the Milk, cell C4.
As you can see, the calculation is
correct and Mrs Brown spent
£2.30.

7. Adding More than 2 Items
Mrs Brown has been shopping
again. She has bought lots of items
this time and wants to know the
cost.
So… Instead of writing
=C3+C4+C5+C6+C7+C8+C9+C10+C11
We can simply highlight all of the
items, and the box where we want
to display the total and click this
button.
This is autosum. It is located in
your tool bar.

We do the same for all of
the other operators. For
instance:
