This document discusses string diagrams and micro and macro motion studies. 2. String Diagram
• There are many industries activates in which the
workers are moving in irregular intervals between
a number of points in a working area, with or
without material.
• Such as an operator is looking after more than one
machine, in restaurant different persons are
serving different tables etc.
• Under such condition a string diagram is the most
useful technique for recording and examining the
activities.

4. Steps of Construct String Diagram
1. Draw the layout of the shop to scale in drawing
sheet.
2. Mark the various work center like machines, stores
works benches etc. in the diagram.
3. Hold the drawing sheet on a soft board and fix pins
at the work centers.
4. Tie one end of a coloured string to the work center
from which the moments start.
5. Follow the path of the worker to the different work
center and accordingly take the thread to different
pint on the drawing board.

5. 6. At the end of the session note down number of the
movements from one work center to another.
7. Remove string and measurement total length of
the string. Multiply by the scale and get the actual
distance of movements.

6. Applications
• It is use for recording the complex movements of
materials or man.
• Back tracking, congestion, Bottlenecks, under
utilized path are easily found out.
• It is used to check whether the work station is
correctly located.
• Used to record irregular movements.
• Used to find out the most economically route.

7. Micromotion Study
• Motion study involves the analysis of the basic
hand, arm, and body movements of workers as
they perform work.
• This is because two handed process charts merely
record microscopic details such as operation,
inspection, transport etc. and study of such motion
in the cycle repetitive job is not enough.
• Each therbligs has a specific colour, symbol and
letter for recording purpose

9. Macromotion Study
• Therblings are used to describe the basic elements
of movement hand motion of the work cycle.
• Every therblig is represented by a symbol, a definite
colour.
• Which are macro-scopic A single operation may
consist of many therbligs.
