O365 Edinburgh User Group - Changing worlds, changing technology and changing project approaches.
A session about how we need to change our approach to delivering projects now that the world of work has changed and we have cloud platforms like Office 365.

for you, so you better go find
them, connect to them, and
build upon what they can do”

Any questions, thoughts and comments?
Technology has evolved, but so have we…
So whats the problem, when we talk about work do we hold our heads in our hands and start sobbing in a corner?work related stress, anxiety or depression accounted for some 10.5 million lost working days a year.4. Health and Safety executive, Self-reported work-related illness and workplace injuries. 2007.
Gallup Poll revealed that 71% of American workers are not engaged or actively disengaged in their work…. Less than 1/3 of americans are engaged, productive and doing meaningful work… SCARY!
The concept of work is fundamentally BrokenThe way we do workThe work placeThe technology we use at workPoint solutions springing up - Agile, workplace design, gamification, value exchange (rather than monetary)How does this really manifest itself?
Work is fundamentally BrokenWork from home to be more productive
Work is fundamentally BrokenWork from Starbucks to collaborate
Work is fundamentally BrokenShould we be un-contactable?Are we ever un-contactable?…Really?I think its our responsibility in this 24*7 world to apply our own filters

Areas of focus - People and CultureHow people workMotivations – Work of Dan Pink and “Drive” – This is where Gamification fits in, have you thought about this??EffectivenessCulture
Areas of focus - Built environmentHow our buildings, desks, offices, meeting rooms etc effect the way we work and our effectiveness.
Areas of focus – TechnologyHow workplace technology supports the way we work or doesn’tHow social software fills the gaps currently
I’d bet that your workplace isn’t working for you… or your clientsI bet theres stuff “at work” that makes you less effective and you have to find your own workarounds for?Lets think about why that would be?
We don’t work in factories any moreKnowledge workOur work practices are very much based on out-dated factory ideals
9 – 5 doesn’t exist anymore
Organisational changesMoving from Command and Control organisations.
David Weinberger stated in the ClueTrain Manifesto in 1999 "hyperlinks subvert hierarchies – This is now finally happeningHow many of you “get things done” by who you know and not “the formal process”??
Economic pressuresForcing all organisations, large and small across all sectors to re-evaluate their investments in technology and strive to deliver clearer business value and a return on investment for their stakeholders
Cultural shifts"Generation Z" has significantly forced the pace of cultural and technological change in the workplace. The "on-line world" has now very much blurred its boundaries with both the personal and working activities
Physical constraintsResources are limited, office space is at a premium and more and more employees are questioning the value of a long commute to a physical place of work; so a new vision of a working life has emerged to the fore that offers flexibility, trust, loyalty, respect and where value is measured on outcomes bereft of physical constraints.
Whether we like it or not we are all in a VERY competitive global marketplace

You get to have the core information worker functionality you need to do business, access anywhere, with your phone, desktop, laptop, browser and web connectivity
Mostly available, but even during the downtimes your not having to deploy a load of expensive engineers to fix it, your not stressing over why it happened and how to prevent it happening again, that’s Microsoft’s problem! All of this rich business functionality available and supported 365 days a year, across the globe, across your employees and your partners, clients and external stakeholders.
We don’t run businesses to keep infrastructure engineers in a job, we do it to serve our customers, deliver value and make money!

How are we gping to deliver technology projects hat support this?
with the world of work changingWith technology changingHow do we deliver these projects and how do we measure success?
Back in 1999, at the dawn of the mainstream adoption of the ‘Intranet’, when Lotus Notes was emerging as a dominant player and Microsoft hadn’t even joined the party, a fundamental shift occurred in Information Technology that I truly believe we all missed. Before then we were focussed on delivering technology solutions that automated human processes and made us more efficient.Around 1999 we started to look at technology more in the realm of augmenting and supporting human interactions. At this point we should have stopped analysing requirements and started to facilitate them!
VisionWe tend to focus on putting the technology in and hoping users will see the benefit! If we think of Tech projects as being like a RELATIONSHIP:Flirting is working out why?Asking to commit (marriage or moving in together) is the business caseWedding planning is delivering the projectWedding day and Honeymoon is go liveFuture together is business as usual
SharePoint projects are people projects; therefore they are inherently squishy and hard to figure out!But let’s face it they’re more tangible and less squishy than say…

Vision | Why?
In this emergent, cloud – based, social, ever changing world the biggest challenge is measuring progress and value.
Social Features:What do we want to measure? How are we going to measure it?
Vision
So if our metrics are ‘up and to the right’ that’s a win yes?Audience, what do they think?Example of home page hits, docs added to library etc…
Taken from the book ‘The Lean Start-Up’ by Eric RiesWe will focus on one key aspect for this talk – ‘Innovation Accounting’.Vanitymetrics.Is what your measuring and the results your seeing because of something you have just done (cause and effect) or because of: ‘old momentum’‘external factors’
