The document proposes the creation of the European Science Education Academy (ESEA) to promote best practices in science education across Europe. The goals of ESEA are to 1) influence science teaching approaches, 2) document innovation in teacher professional development, 3) create an accessible repository of best practices, and 4) provide policy advice. ESEA will develop guidelines, identify resources, support communities of practice, and disseminate information to stakeholders including teachers, policymakers, and educational organizations. Initial funding from PATHWAY and other projects will support developing the conceptual framework, repository, and teacher training programs to improve science education.

Strategic planning and delivery of services at the University of Auckland's Libraries and Learning Services (L&LS) is underpinned by institutional collaboration and consultation. L&LS continues to strengthen its specialist research support services with an enhanced focus on strategic partnerships. L&LS is the institutional owner of Research Outputs (Symplectic Elements), the system used by University of Auckland (UoA) researchers to record and manage their research publications and professional activities. Research Outputs is also a key data source for services that support UoA researchers increase their visibility, track and measure their research impact, and generate data for performance reviews. A reference group of senior academic and professional staff, chaired by the University Librarian, is a forum for strategic decision making on best practice use and development of Research Outputs. The UoA external facing university directory and academic profiles use a publication feed from Research Outputs and is one example of L&LS collaborating on an enterprise wide project to increase the visibility of researchers. L&LS actively contribute to several working groups including an initiative to promote ways to enhance academic reputation and profile, and increase citations. One outcome was a marked increase in deposits to the UoA research repository. A research impact publication service was launched by L&LS in 2014. The multi-faceted BiblioInformatics Service, developed with input from strategic partners and stakeholders, offers researchers consultations with librarians on how to track and maximise the impact of their research outputs and is supported by online guides. A self-service platform, drawing on Research Outputs as a data source, provides information such as h-index and top cited publications. To support strategic decision making the service also delivers benchmarking and collaboration reports to Senior Management on research and citation performance.

Pollen was a project aimed at supporting primary school science teaching and learning through hands-on and inquiry-based education. It provided tools, training, materials and assessment to more than 400 schools and over 36,000 pupils across 12 Seed Cities. Main activities included children's experiments, over 1,824 hours of teacher training, and community involvement. Resources developed included an interactive portal, methodological guides, and issue briefs. Key findings showed improved teacher confidence in teaching science, generally positive pupil attitudes, and that ongoing training, experienced teachers as trainers, and connecting schools to their environment through inquiry-based learning were most effective.

Embedding and sustaining inclusive STEM practices

Aberystwyth University ('Aber') are already playing a prominent role in our Jisc learning analytics pilot project, and following-up on recent success in various higher education league tables, leading-edge IT is a key and core part of maintaining and enhancing the student experience at Aber. Aberystwyth has created their own automated student attendance tracking system – using purpose built hardware, linking into their (off-the-shelf) timetabling system, and their new tutor and student portal system (Aladdin). This demonstration will show some of how Aber has been able to make a significant cost-saving here (deploying across the whole campus), tackle some of the burning technical and operational issues here, and using this data for student intervention and ultimately as a key predictive data source for learning analytics.

Taking into consideration the broad spectrum of work that can be defined as ‘scholarly practice’ e.g., research informed teaching, pedagogy in and beyond the classroom, and the scholarship of learning and teaching, our presentation illuminates several approaches and demonstrates how they can be used to share these important outputs more widely. Considering both the benefits and challenges, approaches to the effective dissemination of scholarship will include the innovative use of digital technology, highlight the ‘best’ social media platforms, and draw delegates attention to the award-winning National Teaching Repository. Sharing real-life examples of scholarly outputs in multiple multi-media based formats (e.g., teaching resources, infographics and audio) we will demonstrate, step-by-step, the dissemination journey that delegates can adopt themselves. In addition to mapping the practical steps, the presentation will highlight how and why sharing one’s scholarship is beneficial, but also why it is important to find and try new ways of sharing.

This research proposal examines the impact of puppetry interventions on communication, social skills, and self-esteem in children, including those with special educational needs (SEN). The study will be conducted with primary school students in Newcastle, Australia. While creative arts practices have been shown to benefit students' academic and personal development, more empirical research is needed to measure the effectiveness of specific interventions like puppetry. This proposal seeks to address gaps in the literature and provide quantitative data on puppetry's potential benefits for children, especially those with SEN.

Professor Hazel Hall introduced the fourth event of the RIVAL Network at Edinburgh Napier University. Since the last meeting, output teams have been working on deliverables and a joint funding application was unsuccessful. Lessons from RIVAL helped inform the Digital Proxies project. The teams then met to discuss progress and next steps, with an upcoming deadline of February 12th for further output team meetings and a wrap-up plenary session.

The research-practice gap in Library and Information Science (LIS) is well documented, especially in respect of the difficulties of translating research into practice, and resultant lost opportunities. While many researchers attempt to explain this research-practice gap, few suggest strategies to address it. The creation of researcher-practitioner networks, however, is one approach that has been proved empirically to bridge the distance between the two communities. Such a network is currently operating in Scotland, funded by the Royal Society of Edinburgh. Research, Impact, Value and Library and Information Science (RIVAL) is part-way through its implementation based around four knowledge exchange events for a network membership of 32 from a wide variety of LIS sectors. RIVAL’s successful delivery depends in part on the project leads’ experience of undertaking, and evaluating the impact of, a UK Arts and Humanities Research Council funded grant: the Developing Research Excellence and Methods (DREaM) project. Already there are indications that RIVAL is delivering value to network members. There is a strong expectation for this to be enhanced, both in the remainder of the funding period and beyond, offering theoretical contributions to the study of social networks, especially in respect of social capital development to support knowledge exchange.

This Dissertation explores the particular circumstances of Mirzapur, a region located in the core of India. Mirzapur, with its varied terrains and abundant biodiversity, offers an optimal environment for investigating the changes in vegetation cover dynamics. Our study utilizes advanced technologies such as GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and Remote sensing to analyze the transformations that have taken place over the course of a decade. The complex relationship between human activities and the environment has been the focus of extensive research and worry. As the global community grapples with swift urbanization, population expansion, and economic progress, the effects on natural ecosystems are becoming more evident. A crucial element of this impact is the alteration of vegetation cover, which plays a significant role in maintaining the ecological equilibrium of our planet.Land serves as the foundation for all human activities and provides the necessary materials for these activities. As the most crucial natural resource, its utilization by humans results in different 'Land uses,' which are determined by both human activities and the physical characteristics of the land. The utilization of land is impacted by human needs and environmental factors. In countries like India, rapid population growth and the emphasis on extensive resource exploitation can lead to significant land degradation, adversely affecting the region's land cover. Therefore, human intervention has significantly influenced land use patterns over many centuries, evolving its structure over time and space. In the present era, these changes have accelerated due to factors such as agriculture and urbanization. Information regarding land use and cover is essential for various planning and management tasks related to the Earth's surface, providing crucial environmental data for scientific, resource management, policy purposes, and diverse human activities. Accurate understanding of land use and cover is imperative for the development planning of any area. Consequently, a wide range of professionals, including earth system scientists, land and water managers, and urban planners, are interested in obtaining data on land use and cover changes, conversion trends, and other related patterns.
