RESEARCH ETHICS -
 It is one of the crucial pillars for
maintaining scientific integrity and
credibility.
 Ethics is generally defined as a set of
principles that distinguish between
acceptable and unacceptable behaviour or
way of conducting a task.
 Ethics focuses on the discipline that study
standard of conduct, such as philosophy,
theology, law, psychology or sociology.
 Academic research involves many coordinated
steps and processes like appropriate study design,
study execution, data collection, data analysis, and
finally publication.
 The Committee On Publication Ethics (COPE) is an
International forum for editors and publishes of
peer reviewed journals the provide the “ Code of
Conduct” and “best practices guidelines” the
define publication ethics and advises editors on
how to handle cases of research and publication
misconduct.
 Why the guidelines were developed – COPE was
founded in 1997 to address breaches of research
and publication ethics. A voluntary body providing
a discussion forum and advice for scientific editors,
it aims to find practical ways of dealing with the
issues, and to develop good practice.
 We thought it essential to attempt to define best
practice in the ethics of scientific publishing. These
guidelines should be useful for authors, editors,
editorial board members, readers, owners of
journals, and publishers.
 How the guidelines were developed- The
guideline were developed from a preliminary
version drafted by individual members of the
committee, which was then submitted to
extensive consultation. They address, study
design and ethical approval, data analysis,
authorship, conflict of interest, the peer review
process, redundant publication, plagiarism, duties
of editors, media relation, advertising, and how to
deal with misconduct.
The Committee On Publication Ethics (COP
 Publishing essential component in the development
of a reliable and respected body of knowledge.
 Scientific truth foundation of advancement.
 A Publication directly reflects quality of the work of
the authors and the institution that support them.
 Important to agree upon standards of expected
ethical behaviour for all parties involved in the
writing & publishing of science.
 Ethical violation affects the quality & integrity of
science.
 Importance of publication ethics are major
categories of ethical violation encountered
during submission, review, and publication of
scientific articles.
 We discuss – Data Fabrication, Falsification,
Plagiarism, Redundant and Duplicate
Publication, Conflict of interest, Authorship,
Simultaneous Submission etc.
A. Data Fabrication - Research fraud refers to publications
that report results and draw conclusions from data that are
not generated by the study.
B. Falsification- is manipulating research materials,
equipment, or processes, changing or omitting data or result
such that the research is not accurately represented in the
research record.
C. Plagiarism- Plagiarism is the appropriated of another
person’s ideas, process, results or words without giving
appropriate credit. Plagiarism can be of two types depending
on the extent of the content reproduced.
(a) clear plagiarism, defined by COPE
(b) minor copying of short phrases only
D. Duplicate Publication- Submitting a new manuscript
containing the same hypotheses, data, discussion points,
and/or conclusions as a previously published manuscript is
called as duplicate publication.
E. Conflict of interest- Conflict of interest comprise those
which may not be fully apparent and which may influence the
judgment of author, revivers & editors. They have been
described as those which when revealed later.
F. Authors- While there is no universal definition of
authorship, an “author” is generally considered to be an
individual who has made a significant intellectual contribution
to the study. The ICMJE states, “All persons designated as
authors should qualify for authorship, and all those who
qualify should be listed.” The ICMJE describes Four basic
criteria that must be collectively met to be credited with
authorship.-
. Substantial contribution to the study conception and
design, data acquisition, analysis, and interpretation.
 Drafting or revising the article for intellectual content.
 Approval of the final version.
 Agreement to be accountable for all aspects of the work
related to the accuracy or integrity of any part of the work.
The three major types of misconduct with authorship are
Ghost Authorship, Gifted Authorship, and Guest
Authorship.
 Ghost authors- are those who contribute substantially in
the development of the paper but are not given authorship
or acknowledgment in the published paper.
 Gift authorship- is typically provided to heads of
institutions or departments even without significant
contribution to a particular study.
 Guest authorship- is usually provided to individuals whose
presence as a coauthor significantly improves the chances
of acceptance of the manuscript.
 There are various forms of unethical practices that
authors resort to, sometimes intentionally and
occasionally by accident. Being aware of
publication ethics enlisted herein will help readers
to consciously avoid such misconduct and perform
honest ethical research and pursue publications.
THANK YOU
