has convinced himself that he is good at his job and well liked, when the truth is, he is neither.

events of the past. Some believe that this is a sign of dementia, however, it appears to be a way for
him to escape the truthof his situation and the reality of who his sons are.

Throughout L. Frank Baum s novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, and the movie, directed by
Victor Fleming there are many powerful messages. Comparing bot the novel and the movie many
similarities and differences were observable. One dominant difference throughout the movie and
the book were the gifts from the wizard and how he bequeathed them to the scarecrow, the tin man
and the lion (Morris). The animals in the Wizard of Oz were self sufficient in wisdom, compassion
and courage; however, the animals did not have enough confidence to realize this throughout the
novel and film. The animals only portrayed these characteristics at the end. In the movie, the
scarecrow, tin man and the lion are given materialistic items; however, in the book they are told
wisdom, compassion, and courage are already inside each one of them and with help, these
characteristics are released.
The first character Dorothy meets while travelling to Emerald City, along the yellow brick road,
is the scarecrow. The movie and the book both compare the scarecrow stating he has no brains,
