Seth Flaxman presents on CityRank (www.cityrank.ch) at DD4D (www.dd4d.net) in Paris in June 2009
Abstract:
"In the context of data on cities, we present an example of how to make statistics relevant and meaningful to non-expert users. While the cities of the world are emerging as key players in global processes, from climate change to migration, the body of data on the cities of the world is neither extensive nor well-organized. Towards the end of organizing, understanding, and presenting this data, we have created an online framework called CityRank. To make this data relevant to users, CityRank allows users to upload new data sets and create and share personalized rankings of cities based on the data included in CityRank’s data repository."

This document lists mistakes the author has made when working with Ruby on Rails. It provides 8 examples of things the author hacked or forced Rails to do that caused problems later. The examples are meant to teach lessons to avoid hacking Rails internals and to use alternative gems or approaches when Rails defaults cause issues. The conclusion encourages readers to ask any other questions.
Quick prototyping apps using JS - Ciklum, VinnitsaYuriy Silvestrov
The document discusses quick prototyping of applications using JavaScript. It provides biographies of Yuriy V. Silvestrov and Mikhail Valkov, and then discusses topics like when quick prototyping is useful, how to quickly prototype an app, JavaScript techniques like MVC, jQuery, AngularJS and RequireJS, design tips including responsive design, and includes links to example applications and code on BitBucket and GitHub.
The document discusses different types of software testing:
1) Test Driven Development follows the red-green-refactor process of adding tests, making them fail, then writing code to pass the tests and refactoring code. It uses implementation, regression, and unit tests.
2) Unit, functional, and integration tests are described. Unit tests check individual components, functional tests check object lifecycles, and integration tests check overall application functionality through scenarios and stories.
3) Various languages and frameworks for writing tests are shown including PHP, Java, Rails, Mocha, RSpec, and different approaches to test data like fixtures, factories, mocking, and stubbing.
Greenwashing, Marketing a Sustainable future (rev1zenthings
- Greenwashing involves companies misleading consumers about their environmental credentials through exaggerated claims and marketing. True sustainability requires implementing practices that minimize environmental impact, not just claiming to be green.
- While interest in sustainability is growing, actions by most companies and governments remain insignificant. For example, Ireland imports 96% of its energy despite claiming to support renewable energy.
- To avoid greenwashing, companies should focus on making genuinely green products and services normal through transparent environmental claims and certifications rather than exaggerated marketing. Consumers also want ethically produced, long-lasting products and experiences over unnecessary consumption.
The document discusses the benefits of exercise for mental health. Regular physical activity can help reduce anxiety and depression and improve mood and cognitive function. Exercise causes chemical changes in the brain that may help protect against mental illness and improve symptoms.
This document provides instructions for saving a PowerPoint presentation as a movie file and uploading it to the Safari Montage platform so that it can be viewed seamlessly within Safari without needing to launch PowerPoint. The key steps are to set transitions in PowerPoint, save the presentation as a movie file, log into Safari Montage, upload the movie file, add it to a playlist, and then it will play like any other movie in Safari Montage.

The document summarizes the song "Janeiro" by Dash Berlin. It was created in 2009 for the album "The New Daylight" to reflect on life, freedom, and love. The song is about feeling at home and happy when running on the beach with a loved one in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil where the singer's naked soul is seen. References to the artist and song websites are also provided.
This chapter discusses the relationship between social media and advertising/marketing practices and how to protect brands. It notes that marketers are drawn to social media because of the large number of people using the internet and social media sites. However, social media also presents risks to brands as consumers can discuss, review and parody companies online. The chapter explores ways companies are using social media to increase brand awareness, such as branded channels and promotions, as well as using social media to foster brand engagement and interaction through customer service, reviews and user-generated content. It notes the legal implications companies must consider when using social media for marketing and advertising purposes.
