Apesar dos progressos consideráveis, a publicação em acesso aberto continua a ser uma atividade minoritária, embora forças de ruptura estejam surgindo, as quais têm o potencial de gerar maior transformação. Talvez o freio mais forte no crescimento da publicação em acesso aberto seja o sistema de recompensa acadêmica, que coloca ênfase em títulos de periódicos estabelecidos e métricas baseadas em periódicos nas práticas de avaliação da pesquisa. Uma das chaves para maior progresso é, portanto, considerar o acesso aberto como um aspecto de um conjunto mais amplo de reformas na comunicação científica.
The past 15 years has seen the emergence and development of open-access publishing as a major new mode of scholarly communication. It is defined by free and immediate access to publications, coupled with the removal of reuse barriers so that new research findings can have the maximum value and reach for further research, education and the benefit of society. Despite strong progress, open-access publishing remains a minority activity, although disruptive forces are emerging that have the potential to drive greater transformation. Perhaps the strongest brake on the growth of open-access publishing is the academic reward system, which places emphasis on established journal titles and journal-based metrics in research assessment practices. One of the keys to further progress is therefore to regard open access as one aspect of a broader set of reforms in scholarly communication.

Overview of LibQual+ for Library Staff
1) The LibQual+ Survey is an online survey developed by the Association of Research Libraries to measure user perceptions of library service quality. It contains core questions about the library as a place, affect of service, and information control.
2) The LibQual+ Survey will be administered at Columbia University Libraries from February 16-23, 2009 to faculty, students, and staff. Results will provide information about user priorities and satisfaction levels to help the libraries improve services.
3) Previous LibQual+ surveys in 2003 and 2006 at Columbia identified top performing areas like electronic resources access, as well as weaknesses like quiet study spaces and the library website.
Starting from zero

Abstract: Before we challenge something it is helpful to understand it. In this talk Danny Kingsley will draw on a debate piece she recently co-authored that argued that open access has been systematically blamed for problems with the scholarly publishing system. This talk argues that amongst librarians, the knowledge of the scholarly communication system is even weaker than within the research community. As a library community we need to increase real understanding of the beast with which we dance. To do so requires a systematic change to the way librarians are educated, their professional development and a shift from managing the academic literature to participating in the generation of it. To not do so risks irrelevance into the future.

Overview of LibQual+ for Library Staff
1) The LibQual+ Survey is an online survey developed by the Association of Research Libraries to measure user perceptions of library service quality. It contains core questions about the library as a place, affect of service, and information control.
2) The LibQual+ Survey will be administered at Columbia University Libraries from February 16-23, 2009 to faculty, students, and staff. Results will provide information about user priorities and satisfaction levels to help the libraries improve services.
3) Previous LibQual+ surveys in 2003 and 2006 at Columbia identified top performing areas like electronic resources access, as well as weaknesses like quiet study spaces and the library website.
Starting from zero

This document discusses the transformation of scholarly communication through open access publishing. It identifies three main disruptions: 1) The rise of megajournals like PLOS ONE which provide a cost-effective publishing model. 2) Direct funding of open access through initiatives like SciELO in Brazil. 3) Reforming research assessment away from journal-based metrics like the Impact Factor to alternative article-level metrics and indicators. Open access is driving changes that benefit authors, readers and the public interest in openly sharing research.
The value of embracing unknown unknowns
This is a presentation given to the RLUK 2016 conference held 9-11 March 2016 at the British Library.
Abstract: Before we challenge something it is helpful to understand it. In this talk Danny Kingsley will draw on a debate piece she recently co-authored that argued that open access has been systematically blamed for problems with the scholarly publishing system. This talk argues that amongst librarians, the knowledge of the scholarly communication system is even weaker than within the research community. As a library community we need to increase real understanding of the beast with which we dance. To do so requires a systematic change to the way librarians are educated, their professional development and a shift from managing the academic literature to participating in the generation of it. To not do so risks irrelevance into the future.

e-Books in academia: Surveying the current landscape
E-books have become an important part of academic library collections and services. Nearly all academic libraries now offer e-books, with holdings growing significantly from 2002 to 2010. However, e-books are primarily used for quick fact extraction rather than long-form reading, and large portions of e-book collections go unused. Academic libraries face challenges with e-books including confusing business models, licensing restrictions, and concerns about perpetual access and archiving. Nonetheless, with the rise of mobile devices, e-books are expected to eventually replace printed books as the main format in academic libraries.
UX and Accessibility
User experience is complex and multifaceted. One of those facets is making services usable to people in different situations. The needs of people with disabilities, both apparent and not, must be considered on our mobile and web platforms if we are to provide good service and abide by federal and state regulations. Cervone looks at some of the common accessibility issues people may have with mobile sites and websites and how to address those issues while still creating a visually stimulating and interactive environment for all.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in Education
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment.
