A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

19. BIOS
• Basic Input/Output System (BIOS)
• The BIOS is typically placed in
a ROM chip that comes with the computer
(it is often called a ROM BIOS). This ensures
that the BIOS will always be available and
will not be damaged by disk failures. It also
makes it possible for a computer
to boot itself.
19sarwan@nielit.gov.in
20. BIOS ROM
• In the BIOS a user can:
– configure hardware
– set the system clock
– enable or disable system components
– select which devices are eligible to be a
potential boot device
– set various password prompts, such as a
password for securing access to the BIOS UI
functions itself and preventing malicious users
from booting the system from unauthorized
peripheral devices.
20sarwan@nielit.gov.in
22. BIOS CMOS Memory
• CMOS stands for "Complementary Metal Oxide
Semiconductor".
• CMOS has the advantage of requiring very little power,
compared to some other semiconductor technologies.
• A special type of memory is used to store this
information, called CMOS memory, and a very small
battery is used to trickle a small charge to it to make
sure that the data it holds is always preserved. These
memories are very small, typically 64 bytes, and the
batteries that they use typically last for years. This non-
volatile memory is sometimes called NVRAM
22sarwan@nielit.gov.in
24. Different Cards
• Video Card : The video card is an expansion card that
allows the computer to send graphical information to a
video display device such as a monitor or projector.
• Sound Card : A sound card is an internal computer
component that processes audio files in order to
provide high-quality playback through computer
speakers
• Network Card : A network card (also called a Network
Adapter or Network Interface Card, or NIC for short)
acts as the interface between a computer and a
network cable. The purpose of the network card is to
prepare, send, and control data on the network.
24sarwan@nielit.gov.in
25. Different ports
• PS/2 : A PS/2 port is an electronic receptacle or plug
found on computers. It accepts a PS/2 cable with a mini-
DIN connector, and is most often used to plug in a
keyboard or mouse.
• Ethernet port : An Ethernet port is an opening on
computer network equipment that Ethernet cables plug
into. These ports are alternatively called jacks or sockets.
Ethernet ports accept cables with RJ-45 connectors
• VGA PORT : A Video Graphics Array (VGA) connector is a
three-row 15-pin DE-15 connector. The 15-pin VGA
connector is found on many video cards, computer
monitors, and some high definition television sets.
25sarwan@nielit.gov.in
26. Different Peripherals
• Printers
• Scanners
• Speakers/Headphones
• Microphones
• Web Cameras
• Joystick
• Personal Digital Assistant
26sarwan@nielit.gov.in
27. PLUG AND PLAY
• plug and play is a term used to describe the
characteristic of a universal serial bus, or device
specification, which facilitates the discovery of a
hardware component in a system, without the
need for physical device configuration, or user
intervention in resolving resource conflicts
27sarwan@nielit.gov.in
28. Functions and Operations of BIOS
• The first job for the BIOS is to initialize and
identify system devices such as the video
display card, keyboard and mouse, hard disk,
CD/DVD drive and other hardware.
• Then locates software held on a peripheral
device (designated as a 'boot device'), such as
a hard disk or a CD, and loads and executes
that software, giving it control of the PC.
28sarwan@nielit.gov.in
29. BIOS STARTUP
The system BIOS is what starts
the computer running when we turn it on.
The following are the steps that a typical boot
sequence involves
• The internal power supply turns on and
initializes
29sarwan@nielit.gov.in
30. Functions and Operations of BIOS
• When the reset button is released, the
processor will be ready to start executing.
• The BIOS performs the power-on self test
(POST). If there are any fatal errors, the boot
process stops.
• and …. follows POST beep codes
30sarwan@nielit.gov.in
31. IBM BIOS beep codes
