Floppy disk working mechanism
Floppy disks work in a similar manner to cassette tapes and the magnetic strip on a credit card.
The floppy disk is constructed of stur plastic that is embedded with a thin iron oxide coating on
both sides. The head of the floppy disk drive easily manipulates the magnetic coating on the disk
to store information. Information is recorded on circular tracks and triangular sections. A special
head in the drive erases the area to be written before recording occurs. This head is wider than
the head used for recording and reading information to ensure recorded information is not
contaminated from previous information recorded nearby.
When reading the disk, the head moves to the appropriate track and sector quickly without
touching the disk. This is an improvement over older cassette tape storage that required a rewind
or fast forward movement to retrieve information. Floppy disks contain a safety slide on the side
of the case. If the slide is moved to create an opening, the drive will not record on the disk.
Introduction
A peripheral is a piece of computer hardware that is added to a computer in order to expand its
abilities. The term peripheral is used to describe those devices that are optional in nature, as
opposed to hardware that is either demanded or always required in principle. There are all
different kinds of peripherals you can add your computer. The main disctinction among
peripherals is the way they are connected to your computer. They can be connected internally or
externally.
Buses
A bus is a subsystem that transfers data between computer components inside a computer or
between computers. Unlike a point-to-point connection, a bus can logically connect several
peripherals over the same set of wires. Each bus defines its set of connectors to physically plug
devices, cards or cables together. There are two types of buses: internal and external. Internal
buses are connections to various internal components. External buses are connections to various
external components. There are different kinds of slots that internal and external devices can
connect to.

There are many different kinds of internal buses, but only a handful of popular ones. Different
computers come with different kinds and number of slots. It is important to know what kind and
number of slots you have on your computer before you go out and by a card that matches up to a
slot you don’t have.
PCI
PCI (Peripheral Component Interconnect) is common in modern PCs. This kind of bus is being
succeeded by PCI.

Solutions may involve checking connections, updating drivers or BIOS, replacing faulty components, and ensuring proper cooling and power.

- 3. Sometimes called fat clients, these are standard computers that we have discussed in this chapter. The computers have their own operating system, multitude of applications, and local storage. They are standalone systems and do not require a network connection to operate. All of the processing is performed locally on the computer.
- 4. These are typically low-end network computers that rely on remote servers to perform all data processing. Thin clients require a network connection to a server and usually access resources using a web browser. However, the client can be a computer running thin client software or a small, dedicated terminal consisting of a monitor, keyboard, and mouse. Typically, the clients do not have any internal storage and have very little local resources.

CAD workstations are used to create blueprints, design homes, cars, airplanes, computers, and many of the parts in the products that you use every day. A computer used to run CAD software must support the needs of the software and the I/O devices that the user needs to design and manufacture products. CAD software is often complex and requires robust hardware.
- 9. AUDIO EDITING WORKSTATION It is used to record music, create music CDs, and CD labels. VIDEO EDITING WORKSTATION It be used to create television commercials, primetime programming, and movies for the theater, or home movies.

- 11. Specialized video card A video card that can handle high resolutions and multiple displays is necessary to combine and edit different video feeds and special effects in real time. You must understand the needs of the customer and research video cards to install a card that can handle the large amounts of information that come from modern cameras and effects equipment.
- 12. Large, fast hard drives Modern video cameras record in high resolution at fast frame rates. This translates into a large amount of data. Small hard drives will fill up very quickly, and slow hard drives will not be able to keep up with demands, even dropping frames at times. A large, fast hard drive such as SDD or SSHD drives are recommended to record high-end video without errors or missed frames.
- 13. Dual monitors When working with audio and video, two, three, or even more monitors can be very helpful to keep track of everything that is going on with multiple tracks, scenes, equipment, and software. HDMI, DisplayPort, and Thunderbolt cards are recommended whereas DVI is acceptable. If multiple monitors are required, specialized video cards are necessary when building an audio or video workstation.
