The Importance of Elections as a Linkage Institution and...
14 October 2012 American Politics Midterm Exam Question 3 The Importance of Elections as a
Linkage Institution and Voting Linkage institutions can be defined as institutions that connect citizens
with the government. Examples of linkage institutions include elections, political parties, interest
groups, and the media. Elections specifically are supposed to encourage public participation in the
selection of governmental officials. Unfortunately, low voter turnout has proved that elections are an
imperfect linkage institution. Elections depend on voters to be successful, and some factors that relate
to the likelihood of voting include age, education, and race. Although some people underestimate the
power of the vote, voter turnout is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Even after the passing of the Fifteenth Amendment, African Americans were disenfranchised in the
South by intimidation and electoral trickery, including whites only primaries, rigged literacy tests, and
poll taxes (Patterson 2011, p. 180). The Freedom Riders rode through the South, enduring harassment
and imprisonment to encourage other African Americans to vote. Voter turnout in African American
communities is greatly encouraged. Personally, coming from an African American family, I was
strongly encouraged by my parents and grandparents to vote when I was of legal age. My family
instilled the importance of voting in me at a very young age. Although voter turnout among African
Americans is still fairly low, in the 2008 presidential election African Americans had the second
highest voter turnout, behind non Hispanic Caucasians (African Americans, n.d.). Race can influence
voter turnout because with African Americans specifically, although rates are getting better, they are
still not high. One factor that decreases voter turnout is the misconception that a person s vote does not
matter. Alienation is a feeling of personal powerlessness that includes the feeling that the government
does not care about individual people. These people believe that the government will not respond to
their concerns even if they do vote. The problem is that a large portion of the population shares this
attitude. People can have negative

Peyton Approved Uses An Accrual Accounting System
Peyton Approved was formed a little over a year ago in the kitchen of the owner of a wonderful
Airedale named Peyton. Peyton has severe allergies and cannot eat dog treats from the store. Peyton
Approved sells homemade dog treats that are all natural and hypoallergenic. The company s president
(also Peyton s owner) started selling these treats out of her home to other dog owners who wanted all
natural dog treats for their dogs. Due to more demand of the all natural, hypoallergenic dog treats,
Peyton Approved needs more room to make the treats and reach more dog owners. Peyton approved

The register is balanced against the drawer each night by the bookkeeper and a deposit made the same

later reports. The accountant checks all cash received and payments made against bank statements and

European Population Trends In The 19th Century
European demographic trends in the eighteenth and nineteenth centu ry thoroughly diverged from the
demographic trend of the periods leading up to this timeline. Unlike the demographic trend of
preceding periods, where a rise in real income would lead to a rise in fertility and consequently in
mortality, the trend of these two centuries were marked by disparate swings as a result of several
occurrences. Population growth in Europe re mained relatively stable in the beginning of the
eighteenth century but started to rapidly expand after 1720, however food supply was surpassing
population due to the Agricultural Revolution, which led to declining mor tality, allowing countries to
circumvent the precursory trend. Medical breakthroughs, the Enlightenment, ... Show more content on

The rise of literacy paved the path to economic devel opment. During this period, the association
between formal education and economic growth strengthened. As economies developed and became
wealth ier and less rural, science and engineering became more essential. The transition to small
families was in part because of economic development. Real wages rose because of specialisation due
to the Industrial Revolution. The expansion of public education put an end to child labour. Wealthy par
ents preferred quality to quantity ; they invested in their children s educa tion instead of having many
children. In comparison, agricultural labour ers with low incomes tended to favour quantity over
quality in children, as it would benefit them in the fields. Contrastingly, in the period before 1800, the
wealthy that had invested greater amounts in their children s ed ucation had the largest number of
surviving children; the more assets an individual had, the more number of surviving children he would
have. Moreover, literacy was generally higher in Protestant countries than in Catholic countries
because the Catholic Church heavily invested in the pro vision of public schooling with a curriculum

The Parks And Recreation Department
The Parks and Recreation Department ( Parks ) seeks direction regarding a staff recommendation to
enter into a new lease agreement with the existing lessee, American Tower Corporation, formerly
American Tower Systems, Inc., a Real Estate Investment Trust ( REIT ) with its principal place of
business located at 116 Huntington Ave. 11th Floor, Boston, Massachusetts, 02116 ( American Tower
). American Tower acquired its leasehold interest in an existing telecommunications tower located in
Santa Teresa County Park, Coyote Peak by an assignment of the lease in 1997. The Lease expired on
July 1, 2016_ and American Tower currently American Tower is a holdover tenant operating at this

As explained herein below, Parks Staff recommends negotiation of a new lease with American Tower
in lieu of issuance of a Request for Proposals to seek out new tenants.
The County entered into an original lease for this communication tower with BayCom San Jose, L.P.
(BayCom) in 1996. In 1997 the lease was assigned to American Tower.
American Tower has generally complied with lease provisions but American Tower has been
delinquent in the timely payment of rent on a few occasions. American Tower staff intends to modify
the lease terms to provide additional assurances for timely payment and deterrence for late payment.

Robert Atkin Diet Research
Claims:
The Atkin s diet is a low carbohydrate food regimen that requires the dieter to strictly limit their intake
of all carbohydrates such as starches and sugars. Limiting the body s consumption of carbohydrates
insures that the body is not able to convert excess glucose into fat. As a stated benefit, the diet also
claims that the reduced intake of sugars and starches will keep your blood levels from dipping. This
will help increase alertness while avoiding energy crashes. Robert Atkin, the creator of the Atkin s
diet, encourages dieters to instead focus on eating healthier fats that contain omega 3 fatty acids. As
featured on the diet s marketing website www.atkins.com, the conception of the diet stems from the
process of ketosis and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The studies were conducted on 322 participants who were overweight, most of whom had a BMI of
31. The test subjects were predominantly male, with 86% being male, and 14% being female. Weight
lost was most prevalent during the first six months of the trial, for the subsequent year, weight lost
became much slower, with many gaining back some weight they lost. At the end of the two yearlong
trial, participants lost an average of 4.6 pounds.
Consequently, the Atkin s diet did work to some extent, however it was mainly beneficial to people
who were eating copious amounts of carbohydrates and refined sugars. The danger occurs when a
person who has a normal intake of carbohydrates begins the diet, this could eventually lead to a
carbohydrate deficiency.
The human body requires carbohydrates in the process of glycolysis (White B. 2000), in which ATP is
produced. During periods of starvation, the bodies enters ketosis, where fat is used as a substitute for
glucose. However, this process does not yield nearly as much energy as glycolysis and leads to the
production of ketones. This is dangerous because the presence of too much ketones in the blood
stream will offset the pH levels and make it

Pros And Cons Of The Death Penalty
The Death Penalty The death penalty has become an extremely pressing issue in our culture today.
Both sides of the argument make very valid points. On one side the death penalty could potentially
make citizens feel more safe, and on the other hand people can argue that us as mere humans do not
have the authority to play God. I believe the death penalty should be abolished for a variety of
reasons; our government is a broken system, a proposed law would not end all murders, and we, as
humans, should not have the authority to determine whether someone lives or dies. In the article
Capital Punishment Should Be Temporarily Suspended the author Russ Feingold talks about our
corrupt government, and gives an example of a man convicted of a crime ... Show more content on

He loves and cherishes His people, and because we bear His image He is a God of justice. When Jesus
died on the cross He fulfilled the old law, or the Old Testament; when his blood was shed it pardons us
from a spiritual death penalty. When reading the New Testament it is full of new framework; rather
than constant justice, there is grace and mercy. The New Testament calls out hypocrisy. For example,
in John 8:2 11 Jesus shows His followers and disciples that we no longer need to condemn others for a
sin that they are in, because we have not removed the plank in our own eye.
At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat
down to teach them. 3 The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in
adultery. They made her stand before the group 4 and said to Jesus, Teacher, this woman was caught in
the act of adultery. 5 In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say? 6

Truman Capote s The Cold Blood
Truman Capote s In Cold Blood is a stupendously written book, regularly acclaimed for it s
unparalleled style. As needs be, readers mustn t look exceptionally far before they discover a surplus
of rhetoric. Capote is regularly credited with having made the first crime novel, and he didn t get this
praise by composing such as others. He utilized his fascinating composition style to make his readers
feel as if they were really in the book, rather than preserving the barrier between the reader and the
page. He permitted them to get inside the character s heads and truly know them, seeing flickers into
the character s pasts while, likewise, foretelling events to come. He wrote with a very, for the time,
eccentric style, but also one that ended up being incredibly powerful.
Capote was genuinely a craftsman with his words. His utilization of imagery throughout makes the
reader feel as if they are truly in Kansas, Nevada, Mexico or wherever else Capote put them. This is
evident as Capote paints the image, Mountains. A hawk wheeling in a white sky. A dusty road winding
into and out of a white and dusty village, (107) which permit the reader to feel like they, themselves,
are in Mexico. Capote rehashes the same technique merely a page after, emphasizing the cruciality of
the scene. At that point, Capote portrays Richard Hickock s cold, oily tortilla leaving a greasy taste in
the reader s mouth. Capote s capacity to paint an image out of words was significant to In

My Experience At My Part Time Job
Over the past few months, I have been working diligently at my part time job. After saving every last
penny that I earned, I now have a total of $3,000. What better way to spend my summer earnings than
to treat myself to an extravagant vacation? To make my extremely difficult decision of where to go
easier, I have narrowed down my choice to only two destinations: Brussels, Belgium, and Dubai,
United Arab Emirates. Although I have simplified my selection to only two vacations, the decision is
still quite difficult; after comparing my transportation costs, the price of my hotel and other essential
accommodations, average meal prices, and the exciting excursions I have planned, my decision should
come much easier. Every child s dream, including mine, is to be surrounded by chocolate for a week;
this dream of mine has lured me to consider Brussels, Belgium, as a lavish vacation spot. Before I can
begin my journey there, I have decided to organize a detailed plan of my exhilarating vacation. First,
my family generously offered to drive me to the Memphis International Airport in Tennessee, where I
will board my first flight to Belgium on June first. Aside from my flight s estimated time to be fifteen
and a half hours long, I was able to find a good deal of $1,114.00 on tickets and stay within my budget
( IEagle | Cheap Flight Ticket ). After arriving at the Brussels National Airport, I will take the free

The Holy Bible, By William Miller
Many people often ask themselves: Who am I. why do people exist. They wonder is there someone or
something that created everything. Throughout history, cultures and countries have developed their
beliefs on what religion and God is to them. Churches today still share similar traditions and beliefs as
ancient churches, but yet there are so many sects of religion and followings. When you think
Christianity you may miss count all the diverse teachings. With all these different teachings, they all
teach from The Holy Bible, but the scripture is translated in my different perspectives. Even though
churches all read from the same book, The Holy Bible , it all comes down to how each church
translates the word. Seventh Day Adventist is a type of Protestant Christian denomination
distinguished by its observance of the seventh day of the week in Christian and Jewish calendars,
which is Saturday. William Miller, S. S. Snow, Joseph Bates, James White, and Mrs. Ellen G. White

her writings are still held in power by the Church. One of her writings, 28 Fundamental Beliefs,
provides the church with guidance. Some of the 28 fundamental beliefs include: belief in Trinity,

Symptoms And Symptoms Of Ebola
Chance Cahill What if you or someone you knew caught a virus that no one knew how to cure, they

how you can prevent it.
What causes Ebola? How was it discovered? Ebola is caused by wild animal bites. Not from the U.S.

Oppositional Difiance Disorder in Our Students Essay
Many times in a classroom we as teachers come across students who seem to always be defiant, who
seem to do things purposely to bother others, or seem to always blame others for his or her mistakes.
Well those students may be showing sings of Oppositional Defiant Disorder or ODD. Oppositional
defiant disorders along with conduct disorders are seen to be frequent psychiatric disorders among
children. (Matthys, Vanderschuren, Schutterm Lochman, 2012, 235) Between 5 and 15 percent of
school aged children have oppositional defiant disorder. It seems to be more common in boys then
girls. It is also seen to me more common in urban than in rural areas. (Childrens Mental Health

According to the Diagnositic and Statistical Manual ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Not only will they have issues learning in a social classroom environment but they also have a hard
time making and keeping friends. As children who have ODD tend to strive on annoying people they
often cannot keep friends. Many of their classmates do not want to be friends with them as they are
constantly bothering them, blaming them for their own mistakes, and tend to act aggressively towards
them. (Kids Mental Health , 2009) Another challenge students with ODD face in school would be that
they have a hard time following rules, losing their temper, and cursing. When trying to learn in a
classroom those are three things that need to be followed. Usually when a student does not comply
with the rules, loses their temper, or curses in class they are asked to leave or they get in trouble. A
student who spends most of his or her time doing those things would lose a lot of learning time and
their for falling behind on their learning. (Salend, Sylvestre, 2005, 32)
As it can be seen by the characteristics of oppositional defiant disorder it can be very difficult to teach
students who have ODD. As it takes at least six months of observation before diagnosing ODD, it is
important that teachers have strategies to work with students who have ODD. There are many
strategies that a teacher can use in the classroom to help. Many of the strategies can be use as whole
class learning, and many of them can be integrated seamlessly into their

Women s Destruction In Native American Myth
Myth a traditional story, especially one concerning the early history of people or explaining some
natural or social phenomenon, and typically involving supernatural beings or events. Motif a
distinctive feature or dominant idea in an artistic or literary composition. Destruction the action or
process of causing so much damage to something that it no longer exists or cannot be repaired.
Women since the beginning of time have been blamed and ridiculed for every single thing they do.
But it seems that nobody really has wondered why this is the way it is. Why is it that women are under

The most important duties for a city dwelling woman were to bear children preferably male and to run

wanted to punish people because Prometheus stole the fire to give it to mankind. Her gifts were
beautifully evil, according to Hesiod. Hephaestus created her from clay, shaping her perfectly,
Aphrodite gave her femininity and Athena taught her crafts. Hermes was ordered by Zeus to teach her
to be deceitful, stubborn and curious. Pandora was given a box or a jar, called pithos in Greek. Gods
told her that the box contained special gifts from them but she was not allowed to open the box ever.
Then Hermes took her to Epimetheus, brother of Prometheus, to be his wife. Prometheus had advised
Epimetheus not to accept anything from the Gods, but he saw Pandora and was astonished by her
beauty, thus he accepted her right away. Pandora was trying to tame her curiosity, but at the end, she

A Brief Note On Singapore And Conduct Business
DOING BUISESS IN SINGAPORE The reason we are going to Singapore is to conduct business.
With that being said, it is important to learn the way business is conducted in the nation of Singapore.
Subtle differences in the approach can potentially make or break a deal. We have to be knowledgeable
about their customs in order to avoid offense. Greetings Greetings follow a strict protocol based off of
ethnic origin and race. The elders are always introduced first. Elders may or may not be accustom to
shaking hands which is why you are to wait on them to extend their hand first. If the person is from a
Chinese background the handshake will tend to be light and prolonged. If the person is Malay it is
important to know that the women are not allowed to shake hands with Malaysian men. This is due to
the fact that Malaysians are mainly Muslim and contact between males and females in public is
forbidden. Instead they may utter the phrase salaam followed by a bow. For our female employees, a
nod and a smile will suffice. If you are going to exchange business cards make sure the card is in
pristine condition. The treatment of the card is seen as a reflection of the relationship (Doing Business
in Singapore). Verbal and Non Verbal Communication The top four languages spoken in Singapore are
English, Mandarin Chinese, Tamil, and Malay. Luckily for us, the top language used for business and
politics in Singapore, is English. To Singaporeans, saving face is very important. It is a sign of

I went to the FC Dallas game a couple of weeks ago to enjoy the sport I love most, but at Toyota
Stadium, Major League Soccer does not feel so major league. You may wonder why and the answer is
simple: the fans. The attendance of FC Dallas has been stuck in the bottom third since the inception of
MLS and yet, FCD is currently one of, if not, the best team in the league this season. The youth
academy system is rated number one because the last two seasons FCD led the league in minutes
played by homegrown players. You would think this would translate into financial gain and spring
them into the exosphere of the MLS, but FC Dallas does not get the national coverage like the New

EMail Privacy Rights In Business Essay
E mail Privacy Rights In Business
I. Abstract
How far we have come in such a small time. When you think that the personal computer was invented
in the early 1980 s and by the end of the millennium, several households have two PC s, it is an
astonishing growth rate. And, when you consider business, I can look around the office and see that a
lot of the cubicles contain more than one PC. It is astonishing to me that such an item has taken
control over the information technology arena like personal computers. Consider, however, the items
that go along with personal computers: printers; modems; telephone lines for your modem; scanners;
the software; online access; and lets not forget, e mail addresses.

Among these dangers is privacy, in particular, what legal rights corporations and employees have in
keeping their communications private. This paper will introduce the current legislation in this area, the
expectation of privacy an employee should have, any court decisions that provide additional ruling,
and what a corporation can do to prevent litigation in these matters.
II. Employees Expectation of Privacy in e mail
As an e mail systems manager, I was under the impression that since the company owns the electronic
messaging system, the company could view the contents of any employees e mail account at any time.
I was only partially right. The explanation of the current law will describe this in detail, but, the
employee does have a certain right to privacy where e mail is concerned.
Arguably, a company s most valuable asset is it s data. In the age of technological marvels, it is easier
to create more valuable data and, on the other hand, that data is more easily retrievable, especially by
persons not authorized to obtain the data. Employees of companies can expect a certain right of
privacy granted by three main sources: (1) The United States Constitution; (2) Federal Statutes (The
Electronic Communications Privacy Act of 1986); and (3) State Statutes (many of which have not
addressed the issue).
The United States Constitution provides a limited group of employees with privacy safeguards. The

Nevada. All of those patients were hospitalized, and none of them died from the infection. On August,
2010, Goya Foods, Inc. and Montalvan s Sales, Inc. announced voluntary recalls of frozen mamey
pulp. Typhoid fever is caused by Salmonella serovar Typhi, which is associated with food and water
that have been contaminated by the feces or urine of S. Typhi infectors (Katz and others 2002). S.
Typhi exists in unsanitary conditions, especially in crowded areas. Developing countries thus become
highly infected areas than developed countries. Similar ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The complete elimination is impossible due to the prevalence of bacteria. Nevertheless, there are
many preventative measures that can minimize the rate of bacterial contaminations on foods.
First and foremost, personal hygiene is one of the most important factors in bacterial contamination.
Farm workers, on the one hand, can contaminate foods if they do not wash hands after use bathroom
or make contact with foods after contacted with non food substances. Food handlers or distributors
can contaminate foods in the same way. People who handle ready to eat (RTE) foods, especially, have
to wear gloves to avoid any chance of contamination. Conversely, the personal hygiene of consumers
is of equal importance that foodborne illnesses can happen if a consumer does not wash hands
properly before eating or handle foods appropriately. For example, Penteado and others (2014)
describe the potential cross contamination for Salmonella spp. and Listeria monocytogenes from
contaminated knives. The best way is to wash hands frequently, especially right before meals, and
handle or cook foods with sanitized utensils, in the way as suggested by the products. Obviously,
employees working with food handling or other relevant activities should be trained in developing
their knowledge about personal hygiene. Furthermore, strict supervision and appropriate document are
needed to ensure those people are taking responsibility in food

CMPD Explorer Program Analysis
Last year December 2014 I volunteered with the CMPD Explorers and the Salvation Army to provide
gifts for children and their families all over the city of Charlotte, NC. The CMPD Explorer program is
a program that is for high school students in the Charlotte who want to be police officers when they
grow up or work with some type of law enforcement to interact with real police officers. In the
program we practice real life scenarios that can happen all the time, go on trips, and volunteer in the
community doing community service. I like the program because with community service you can
help out families who cannot afford Christmas. Every Christmas the CMPD Explorers partner with the
Salvation Army to provide Christmas for hundreds of families and thousands of children all over the
city of Charlotte. Until this experience, I never saw a person who could not afford to provide gifts for
their children for Christmas. I knew about poverty was a thing but I never knew it was this bad. ...

What Is The Turning Point Of 12 Angry Men
Twelve Angry Men is a very good movie and had a lot of ups and downs throughout the movie. Yes, I
think it took a great deal of courage for Fonda to vote not guilty. First, everyone thought he was guilty
without discussing and just jumping to a conclusion. Fonda actually wanted to give some thought to it
and discuss why the kid deserved a chance and why he might not be guilty. Also, the mood in the
room was very dark when all the jurors got into the room one guy just wanted to go the baseball game,
so he just wanted the kid to be guilty so he could get out of there. Plus the fan wouldn t work at first so
all of them were hot and were ready to get out of there, so I think they just wanted the kid to be guilty.

Essay On Coming To America
There are many significant parts of my life that have had a huge impact on my personality, but there is
one that has not only affected me, but has changed me for the better. My personal life changing
experience was coming to America. For me, this bridge between my old life and new life is a shaky
bridge that I attempted to cross and entered a whole new realm of life which changed everything. The
decision about coming to America has taught me how to respect other people, be more responsible,
and be more loving towards various friends and families. It has also helped me adapt to the new life
that I m about to begin. It was so unexpected. Out of nowhere my parents broke the news: We re going

way they did why I came to America, why I met certain people, and why it happened at that time. All
these questions were finally answered by God, who spoke through other people at school, church and
even my home. I finally understood why the Indian people living in Greenwood helped us the way
they did; they put themselves in our shoes and realized that they had gone through the same
experience. From these experiences, God has helped me understand the importance of these small
parts of life that I didn t use to think about before. The big change finally made sense! It all happened

Secular Stagnation And The 2008 Financial Crisis
Introduction: The collapse of the financial market in the United States created an accelerated
momentum that pushed the global economy towards a detrimental downward spiral during 2008. In
response to the crisis, the world s top economies created the G20 leaders forum in order to manage the
financial downturn. Although the crisis was somewhat managed by the G20, the Great Recession left
the world with a weak and stagnate global economy. The rise of secular stagnation was a viable threat
following the Great Recession that entrench the whole world and is still a pressing issue today. Secular
stagnation is defined by low economic growth and high unemployment rate. In this paper I will
discuss the origin of the 2008 financial crisis and the G20 efforts in order to establish foundation to
face the rise of secular stagnation. Following the brief history of today s urgent problem, I will further
discuss secular stagnation and argue that in order to solve the high unemployment caused by secular
stagnation fiscal policies must be applied as well as a pursue to an improvement in educational system
must be made.
2008 Financial Crisis and the G20 The financial crisis began in 2006 when the US housing marking
began to decline due to irresponsible mortgage lending in subprime areas. Many borrowers were
unable to pay back these loans, thus increasing the toxic debt held by many banks. In addition,

The Classical Period Of Greek Art
The beautiful Three Sided Relief , also known as the Boston Throne , is a treasure
of the Museum of Fine Arts, as it is an original relief from the Early Classical Period of Greek
art. Though it was found in Rome, it is not a Roman copy of the relief, which makes it
incredibly unique. The Three Sided Relief was found in a private villa on via Boncampagni.
The intriguing part of this discovery was that the Three Sided Relief was found in the same
region as the Ludovisi Relief, a relief of a similar proportion, subject matter, and creation
date. The artwork, though found in Rome, is very easily identified as Greek due to the
material used (marble) and also the distinctly Greek style of the relief, containing
reference to both Ionic Greek agriculture and Attic grave reliefs. Greeks used their art
much more religiously than the Romans, who used it more for political propaganda
purposes. Artwork to the Greeks was used to honor their gods and decorate the temples
they erected to celebrate their gods.
The main face of the Three Sided Relief depicts a winged boy in the nude standing in
the center of the relief, and holding up a large balance. There are three large holes cut into
the relief, one in each wing of the boy and another in his chest. These holes were made to
receive the ends of tenons, proving that the now lost beam was made of marble, not bronze.
The two pans of the balance are still attached to the relief, as they are anchored to the

Machiavelli And Warfare
The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli (1469 1527) is one of the most important surviving texts on
political philosophy to date. In The Prince, Machiavelli provides a guide to ruling, complete with
some of the more unpleasant necessities that come with maintaining power. Though Machiavelli
explores a myriad of ways to achieve political power, one of his biggest focuses is on how to conduct
warfare and its importance to a healthy state. The importance of warfare in Machiavelli is great
because it informs the rest of his reign and the surrounding politics. He himself outlines the
importance of arms by saying that, the chief foundations of all states, whether new, old, or mixed, are
good laws and good arms and that there cannot be good laws where there are not good arms, and
where there are good arms there must be good laws (44). It is based off of this importance of the
military that Machiavelli devotes much of The Prince to the conducting of good war and the
importance of its role in politics and the stability of state. To understand the work of Machiavelli is to
understand law and politics, topics that, for Machiavelli, are founded on military strength.

if they conquer you remain their prisoner (49). Instead, Machiavelli sets up an army of citizens, a

repercussions for this action are a stronger and more dedicated force. While mercenaries and
auxiliaries have little to no stake in the battles they fight for another nation, a standing army fights for
their family, their prince, and their land. They are therefore far more invested in its victory and will

Glow Sticks History
Glow sticks and LED light sticks are commonly seen in popular society at concerts and festivals.
However, glow sticks have several other uses and were originally invented for use in the military. In
the 1960s, scientists were interested in the light fireflies produced in nature. They discovered that this
light could be produced without energy or heat using a chemical compound called luciferin. A
Brooklyn born chemistry specialist named Edwin A. Chandross accidentally identified the chemical

Literary Analysis Of The Haunted Boy
Literary Analysis The Haunted Boy
The setting is used by the author in stories to display the mood of the scene. Specific details bring up
certain moods for the characters and the reader. For example, when talking about a warm, sunny day,
the reader can infer that the scene is going to be happy and there is going to be no misfortunate event
that happens. Carson Smith McCullers uses the setting in her short story The Haunted Boy to display
the different moods of the main character Hugh. The settings in the story help show how
uncomfortable Hugh is in the house after a past experience and shows how happy he is outside when
he remembers happy memories.
The beginning of the story starts out with one of few happy settings. The front yard was one of the
only places that brought happy feelings to the story. McCullers short story starts out by describing the
day having sunshine on a mid April afternoon and the front lawn being green (page 675). These
descriptions allow the reader to think warm and colorful thoughts. The story then goes to talk about
how the boys are running outside in the warm. Hugh race up the sidewalk, and John followed him.
They finished the front steps with two bounds, and the door slammed after them (page 675). This
shows how the boys are having fun and enjoying each others company. Finally, the front yard is the
place that Hugh remembers some of his fond memories of his mother. Sometimes she would be out
fooling with the border of spring flowers the candytuft, the sweet William, the lobelias (she had taught
him the names)... (page 675). From this explanation, the reader can relate to the character thinking
about different memories that they may have that bring happy thoughts to mind.
One of the only places in the house that brought a comfortable feeling to Hugh was the kitchen. The
kitchen is described as bright and clean and the best room in the house (page 676). In the kitchen,
there are fresh towels and clean dishes. This statement gives you the feeling that everything is going
well in the house and there is nothing wrong. The kitchen is also the only place in the house that made
Hugh feel comfortable and safe (Page 677), except on this particular day when there was no note from

Theme Of Gothic Elements In Masque Of The Red Death
Michael Ruiz once said, Everyone dies. There s no point in fighting it. In Masque of the Red Death by
Edgar Allan Poe, there is a disease that kills almost everyone in a country so the king brings all
survivors into a castle to prevent it from killing anyone else, although it still ends up getting in from a
ghost, and wipes everyone else out. In Masque of the Red Death by Edgar Allan Poe, Poe uses gothic
elements such as a gloom setting, supernatural beings, curses, and air of mystery and suspense.

There were sharp pains, and sudden dizziness, and then profuse bleeding at the pores, with dissolution.
Poe uses the disease as a curse, it eventually ends up killing everybody and there is no way to stop the
doom. It is used as a curse by showing it cannot be stopped and from it being created from a
supernatural being, which is the ghost who enters the castle and gives everyone the red death. The
curse is what the whole story is based on, and the reason everyone dies.
The fourth and final gothic element Edgar Allan Poe uses in Masque of the Red Death, is the air of
mystery and suspense. Poe does this by creating a gloomy setting and entering a ghost that creates
mystery because the readers cannot see his face or know what he is or what he is up to. Poe describes
him as, The figure was tall and gaunt, and shrouded from head to foot in the habiliments of the grave.
There is many ways Poe shows the mystery and suspense, Poe also uses a lot of death and blood to
create a mystery because the reader doesn t know who is going to die next, neither does the characters
in the story.
In Masque of the Red Death by Edgar Allan Poe, there are four gothic elements used, a gloomy
setting, supernatural beings, curses, and the air of mystery and suspense. These create a gothic theme
by making the setting gloomy and dark which makes the story unhappy and colorless, which forms the
gothicness of the story. The supernatural beings create a

Everyday Life And Existence In Thornton Wilder s Our Town
Throughout time, many things have changed dramatically. Technology, food, culture, and the quality
of life are just a few examples of how our life has been altered. However, there is one thing that has
not changed much: the view of human life and existence. Humans want and have the need to be
unique, yet this is just an implausible figment of the imagination. Life unveils itself for everyone in
the same way when it comes to love, death, and other worldly things. Everyone has the intention of a
perfect life. Thornton Wilder looks into the idea of the similarities of everyday life and existence in his

love is important and a significant part in life; she must have believed that if she lived with her

Emily, I think that once you ve found a person that you re very fond of...I mean a person who s fond

Trials And Tribulations Of The Muslim Youth Today

October 24, 2015
Trials and Tribulations of the Muslim Youth Today The Youth of Islam today are dwelling in a crisis
and it is a shame to say that most of them know not of what they are in engrossed in. Others out of
ignorance disobey the commandments of Allah (SWT) and the guidance of the Prophet, Muhammad
(SAW), thus bringing upon them the wrath and anger of Allah (SWT). The lack of authentic
knowledge and taqwa (fearing and being cautiously aware of Allah) allows the shaytaan to throw in
doubts and arrogance into the hearts of the young Muslims. This leads them directly towards the
wrong path and straight to the fire. Therefore without knowledge and a firm foundation of taqwa the
young Muslim well never see the light and the beauty of the religion they are obligated to embrace.
The lack of knowledge and taqwa also opens the doors to many major issues such as identity crisis,
venom of the media, bad companionship, love and attachment to the dunya, and lack of confidence.
Although there may be more reasons to the downfall of the youth these few that were mentioned are
the main issues that the youth must combat because they are things you deal with on a day to day
basis. Time is running and day after day we are losing our brothers and sisters to these issues. It is a
matter of time before we completely lose them and they become so engulfed in disobedience that they
begin to join forces with those who are cursed by Allah (SWT),

aspiration of walls in this piece is to block neighbors and assemble a better relationship. Descriptive
words are used to portray a improved visual of what is designed to see. Robert Frost speaks of seasons
as if it were a human.
Wall s are blockages used to isolate a human beings wants and feelings. Privacy should be respected

Robert Frost used a word choice that shaped the readers mind into the outdoor scenery where the dog
is on one side of the fence barking.
Robert Frost is a major nature enthusiast. In the poem, Mending Wall, the speaker talks about the
Spring. Taking a literal approach, he used Spring, because it is the first season of the year. A new
beginning for two people that have had a protracted antagonism for one another. The speaker does not
understand how they are becoming good neighbors, because they are not cows. People often use
nature to express new beginnings and the start of something new.
Nature is a description of a Season. Seasons are the start of a new beginning. The speaker uses the
word Spring, possibly because it is the first official and whole season of the year. The neighbor could
be expressing how he thinks they should break the wall down and start over. A new beginning is what
he desires.
The speaker wants nothing but a friendship with his neighbor but the neighbor wants the privacy that
he feels he is entitled to. The speaker expresses how the neighbor is a pine cone. Pine cones are hard
and nettlesome. Pine cones are very arduous. Attempting to express his feelings, the speaker could be
referring to the neighbor as a pine cone, because no matter how bad he tries, the neighbor will not
break into fragments.
The last word or phrase that Robert Frost expressed within the poem was cows. The neighbor thinks it
is ridiculous to have

Matter can take on different changes physically and chemically, for an example of a physical change is
when water freezes into ice, there is no chemical change to the water but a physical change the ice is
just water molecules made of hydrogen and oxygen packed tightly together. But, another physical
change would be bending iron metal, the iron is still the same chemically whether it is made into I
beams, or pressed into shapes to make the body of a car; the shape may change but it never changes
chemically. In addition, a chemical change is the results in one or more substances that make up an
entirely different composition from the original substances. The compounds and/ or elements at the
start of the chemical reaction are rearranged into a new product of compounds or elements. Also a
chemical reaction alters the composition of the original matter, different elements or compounds are
present at the end of the chemical change. Although an example of a chemical reaction is the process

Indian nationalism refers to the many underlying forces that molded the Indian independence
movement, and strongly continue to influence the politics of India, as well as being the heart of many

nationalism often imbibes the consciousness of Indians that prior to 1947, India embodied the broader

More than just Indian
Indian nationalism is as much a diverse blend of nationalistic sentiments as its people are ethnically
and religiously diverse. Thus the most influential undercurrents are more than just Indian in nature.
The most controversial and emotionally charged fiber in the fabric of Indian nationalism is religion.
Religion forms a major, and in many cases, the central element of Indian life. Ethnic communities are
diverse in terms of linguistics, social traditions and history across India.
Hindu Rashtra
An important influence upon Hindu consciousness arises from the time of Islamic empires in India,
during which many Hindu temples were destroyed and Hindus forcibly converted to Islam, and
millions of Hindus killed by Muslim invaders. Entering the 20th century, Hindus formed over 75% of
the population and thus unsurprisingly the backbone and platform of the nationalist movement.
Modern Hindu thinking desired to unite Hindu society across the boundaries of caste, lingustic groups
and ethnicity. In 1925, K.B. Hedgewar founded the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh in Nagpur,
Maharashtra, which grew into the largest civil organization in the country, and more potent,
mainstream base of Hindu nationalism.

They find out that this monkey s paw is one big troublemaker that causes havoc and unrest. Overall,
The Monkey s Paw , had very distinct and believable characters and a great plot that was fraught with
danger and suspense. One element I like in The Monkey s Paw was it had very distinct characters. For
instance, Mrs. White s unawareness of what s going to happen really contributes to the outcome of the
story. If it weren t for Mrs. White s naïve and unwary personality, the book probably would have been
different as this quote suggests. Wish! she cried in a strong voice. It s foolish and wicked, said Mr.
White. Wish! repeated his wife. (192) When she had forced Mr. White to make this wish she did not
know that Herbert would come back as an undead corpse. Every mom wants her kid, but she did not
realize that bringing her son would make things even worst. Along with Mrs. White s unwariness, Mr.
White s interest in the paw without a doubt contributes to the developing story. I deem that Mr. White
paid no attention to the warnings Sergeant Morris conveyed. Pitch it in the fire like a sensible man
said Morris. Mr. White shook his head and examined his new possession closely. How

The Fur Trade Analysis
Bowsfeild, (2003) explains that Robert Semple who was born February 6th, 1777, and was the
Hudson Bay Company s, territorial Governor. He also states that historians claim Semple to be an
extremely hostile, vain, and failed to appreciate the lengths to which the Northwest Company would
go in order to destroy the Red River Settlement. At first Semple respected Robertson s superior
knowledge of the country, but he eventually decided to assert his own leadership. Robertson hoped to
blockade the rivers and prevent the Métis from supplying pemmican to the Northwest Company
bridges travelling west. Semple was more concerned with provisions for the settlement than with the
blockade.

The first Métis people were born in Eastern Canada as early as the 1600s, and they were the children
born to European men and their Aboriginal wives, (Sprague, 1998). When the fur trade moved west, in
the 1700s and 1800s, many French Canadian fur traders found the Aboriginal wives and had children,
and there are about 350,000 400,000 Métis in Canada alone. The Métis played a vital role in the
success of the Fur Trade. Not only were the Métis skilled buffalo hunters, but they were also raised to
appreciate both their Aboriginal and European cultures. Over time, the Métis became valuable
employees of both fur trade companies: The North West Company and even the Hudson s Bay
Company because the Métis were skilled voyageurs, buffalo hunters, traders, and interpreters,
(Sprague, 1998).
Ray, (2015), explains that The Hudson s Bay Company was founded by French traders named Medard
Chouart des Groseilliers, and Pierre Esprit Raddison, who first proposed a trading company to reach
the interior for better fur access. Once the posts for the Hudson s Bay Company were established, they
began trading with the Aboriginal people in Canada, this came to be known as the Fur Trade, which
will be further explained below. The Aboriginal people would trade pemmican and other furs for
manufactured items. This continued for many years until the Hudson s Bay Company began wanting

The European Union Law School Essay
Discussion: Would it be correct to say that the Court of Justice has dealt with any obstacles to the

INTRODUCTION
The European Union ( EU ) is an economic and political vehicle between 28 European countries,
including the United Kingdom, that allows national governments to pursue shared and national
interests. The United Kingdom became a Member State in 1973. The EU was born out of a quest for
peace following the devastating effects of World War II. To that end, six nations signed the European
Coal and Steel Community Treaty, in 1951, to share their coal and steel resources. This agreement was
subsequently replaced by the European Economic Community ( EEC ), which was eventually
renamed the European Community ( EC ). The EU, which was created by the Maastricht Treaty,
replaced the EC when it formally came into being in 1993 following ratification of the Treaty of the
European Union ( TEU ) by Member States.
COURT OF JUSTICE OF THE EUROPEAN UNION
Article 13 of the TEU calls for the creation of EU institutions whose goals and objectives, amongst
other things, are to promote and serve the interests and values of Member States and their citizens.
One such institution is the Court of Justice of

The Importance of Elections as a Linkage Institution and... 14 October 2012 American Politics Midterm Exam Question 3 The Importance of Elections as a Linkage Institution and Voting Linkage institutions can be defined as institutions that connect citizens with the government. Examples of linkage institutions include elections, political parties, interest groups, and the media. Elections specifically are supposed to encourage public participation in the selection of governmental officials. Unfortunately, low voter turnout has proved that elections are an imperfect linkage institution. Even after the passing of the Fifteenth Amendment, African Americans were disenfranchised in the South by intimidation and electoral trickery, including whites only primaries, rigged literacy tests, and poll taxes (Patterson 2011, p. 180). The Freedom Riders rode through the South, enduring harassment and imprisonment to encourage other African Americans to vote. Voter turnout in African American communities is greatly encouraged. Personally, coming from an African American family, I was strongly encouraged by my parents and grandparents to vote when I was of legal age. My family instilled the importance of voting in me at a very young age. Although voter turnout among African Americans is still fairly low, in the 2008 presidential election African Americans had the second highest voter turnout, behind non Hispanic Caucasians (African Americans, n.d.). Race can influence voter turnout because with African Americans specifically, although rates are getting better, they are still not high. One factor that decreases voter turnout is the misconception that a person s vote does not matter. Alienation is a feeling of personal powerlessness that includes the feeling that the government does not care about individual people. These people believe that the government will not respond to their concerns even if they do vote. The problem is that a large portion of the population shares this attitude. Capote is regularly credited with having made the first crime novel, and he didn t get this praise by composing such as others. He utilized his fascinating composition style to make his readers feel as if they were really in the book, rather than preserving the barrier between the reader and the page. He permitted them to get inside the character s heads and truly know them, seeing flickers into the character s pasts while, likewise, foretelling events to come. He wrote with a very, for the time, eccentric style, but also one that ended up being incredibly powerful. Capote was genuinely a craftsman with his words. His utilization of imagery throughout makes the reader feel as if they are truly in Kansas, Nevada, Mexico or wherever else Capote put them. This is evident as Capote paints the image, Mountains. A hawk wheeling in a white sky. A dusty road winding into and out of a white and dusty village, (107) which permit the reader to feel like they, themselves, are in Mexico. In response to the crisis, the world s top economies created the G20 leaders forum in order to manage the financial downturn. The Classical Period Of Greek Art The beautiful Three Sided Relief , also known as the Boston Throne , is a treasure of the Museum of Fine Arts, as it is an original relief from the Early Classical Period of Greek art. Though it was found in Rome, it is not a Roman copy of the relief, which makes it incredibly unique. The Three Sided Relief was found in a private villa on via Boncampagni. The intriguing part of this discovery was that the Three Sided Relief was found in the same region as the Ludovisi Relief, a relief of a similar proportion, subject matter, and creation date. The artwork, though found in Rome, is very easily identified as Greek due to the material used (marble) and also the distinctly Greek style of the relief, containing reference to both Ionic Greek agriculture and Attic grave reliefs. Greeks used their art much more religiously than the Romans, who used it more for political propaganda purposes. Artwork to the Greeks was used to honor their gods and decorate the temples they erected to celebrate their gods. The main face of the Three Sided Relief depicts a winged boy in the nude standing in the center of the relief, and holding up a large balance. There are three large holes cut into the relief, one in each wing of the boy and another in his chest. These holes were made to receive the ends of tenons, proving that the now lost beam was made of marble, not bronze. • 27. Machiavelli And Warfare The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli (1469 1527) is one of the most important surviving texts on political philosophy to date. In The Prince, Machiavelli provides a guide to ruling, complete with some of the more unpleasant necessities that come with maintaining power. Though Machiavelli explores a myriad of ways to achieve political power, one of his biggest focuses is on how to conduct warfare and its importance to a healthy state. The importance of warfare in Machiavelli is great because it informs the rest of his reign and the surrounding politics. He himself outlines the importance of arms by saying that, the chief foundations of all states, whether new, old, or mixed, are good laws and good arms and that there cannot be good laws where there are not good arms, and where there are good arms there must be good laws (44). It is based off of this importance of the military that Machiavelli devotes much of The Prince to the conducting of good war and the importance of its role in politics and the stability of state. • 33. Literary Analysis Of The Haunted Boy Literary Analysis The Haunted Boy The setting is used by the author in stories to display the mood of the scene. Specific details bring up certain moods for the characters and the reader. For example, when talking about a warm, sunny day, the reader can infer that the scene is going to be happy and there is going to be no misfortunate event that happens. Carson Smith McCullers uses the setting in her short story The Haunted Boy to display the different moods of the main character Hugh. The settings in the story help show how uncomfortable Hugh is in the house after a past experience and shows how happy he is outside when he remembers happy memories. The beginning of the story starts out with one of few happy settings. The front yard was one of the only places that brought happy feelings to the story. McCullers short story starts out by describing the day having sunshine on a mid April afternoon and the front lawn being green (page 675). These descriptions allow the reader to think warm and colorful thoughts. The story then goes to talk about how the boys are running outside in the warm. Hugh race up the sidewalk, and John followed him. They finished the front steps with two bounds, and the door slammed after them (page 675). This shows how the boys are having fun and enjoying each others company. Finally, the front yard is the place that Hugh remembers some of his fond memories of his mother. Sometimes she would be out fooling with the border of spring flowers the candytuft, the sweet William, the lobelias (she had taught him the names)... (page 675). From this explanation, the reader can relate to the character thinking about different memories that they may have that bring happy thoughts to mind. One of the only places in the house that brought a comfortable feeling to Hugh was the kitchen. The kitchen is described as bright and clean and the best room in the house (page 676). In the kitchen, there are fresh towels and clean dishes. This statement gives you the feeling that everything is going well in the house and there is nothing wrong. The kitchen is also the only place in the house that made Hugh feel comfortable and safe (Page 677), except on this particular day when there was no note from his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The curse is what the whole story is based on, and the reason everyone dies. The fourth and final gothic element Edgar Allan Poe uses in Masque of the Red Death, is the air of mystery and suspense. Poe does this by creating a gloomy setting and entering a ghost that creates mystery because the readers cannot see his face or know what he is or what he is up to. Poe describes him as, The figure was tall and gaunt, and shrouded from head to foot in the habiliments of the grave. They find out that this monkey s paw is one big troublemaker that causes havoc and unrest. Overall, The Monkey s Paw , had very distinct and believable characters and a great plot that was fraught with danger and suspense. One element I like in The Monkey s Paw was it had very distinct characters. For instance, Mrs. White s unawareness of what s going to happen really contributes to the outcome of the story. If it weren t for Mrs. White s naïve and unwary personality, the book probably would have been different as this quote suggests. Wish! she cried in a strong voice. It s foolish and wicked, said Mr. White. Wish! repeated his wife. (192) When she had forced Mr. White to make this wish she did not know that Herbert would come back as an undead corpse. Every mom wants her kid, but she did not realize that bringing her son would make things even worst. Along with Mrs. White s unwariness, Mr. White s interest in the paw without a doubt contributes to the developing story.
