The Media s Portrayal Of Women
Introduction
The portrayal of women in the media has drastically changed through the years. Those changes can be
viewed as positive or negative, but many times they impose an influence on female viewers. Those
influences often lead to damaging outcomes such as eating disorders and depression. The range of
influences and effects caused by the portrayal of women is wide and also includes low self esteem,
body image issues and the need to be a sex symbol. The Social Learning Theory is important in
understanding how women are affected by their presence in the media. The modeling process included
within the theory is essential to identifying how women are overwhelmed with images of the perfect
or ideal body. Those images are generally largely unrealistic. Many statistics show an increase of
eating disorders and other mental health issues as women are subjected to images of societal and

is to develop flexible strategies for revising, editing, and proofreading writing. I believe that my first
and third short assignment, and the second major paper will be able to demonstrate my ability to pull
from given feedback by instructor and peers to successfully revise in order to produce effective works.

Asian immigrants with numerous programs, services and advocacy2.The writing responds to

In a faraway land called Australia lived a tribe of aboriginals called the Luritja people. The land they
lived on was harsh and very hot but they had adapted over hundreds of years to be able to survive in
this rough country. They caught fish, hunted kangaroos, wallabies, lizards and snakes. In this tribe
lived a boy called Charlie and he spent his days playing with the other boys in the tribe, learning to
fish, hunt, track animals and he even learned what animals made the footprints in the red dirt. His
uncle would tell him stories of long ago (these are called Dreamtime stories) and he would sit really
still so he could listen to the whole story and not miss any of it. His grandfather made him a spear that
he could practice with and although it was not as large as his father s spear it could still be used to
hunt small creatures like lizards.
One day while Charlie watched his older brother practice throwing a boomerang and making it return
to him. He thought this must be a magical boomerang and he wanted a magic one too but he did not
know how he would get it. His father told him he was too small for a boomerang as he would not be
able to throw it and have it return to him. Charlie thought that was not fair he really wanted a magic
boomerang and no one was going to help him so he decided he would make one for himself and it
would be a magic one.

In David Wallace s Big Fish the readers are introduced to Edward Bloom, the main protagonist and a
larger than life character. The course of the story follows the ebb and flow of adventure in Edward s
life, beginning from a young age in the mystical town of Ashland, and eventually ending poetically in
a guest room. While both of these events may seem normal enough it is the occurences, as described

A great illustration of this would be the story of Kyle the giant. To further illustrate, while most of the
