Why Is Calculator Is Not Appropriate In The Classroom
Math Research Paper
Since the 1980 s calculator use in the classroom has been a huge controversy between educators
(Golden, 2000). It is becoming increasingly common to use calculators in the classroom on a regular
basis. Some states allow students to use calculators on standardized tests and as part of the regular
curriculum (Dion, 2001). Because we live in such a technologically changing world, hand held
calculators have been far surpassed and can be purchased for as low as $4.00 each. This low price
however, has not swayed the many people that believe calculators are not appropriate in the
classroom.
These critics argue that calculators take away student s basic knowledge of mathematics, prevent
children from truly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This evidence alone is enough proof, for some, that calculator use takes away basic skills and when
given a test where these skills come into play, children do not perform well. It is believed that the
difference in calculator use based on race and wealth may reinforce inequality in scholastic
achievement, rather than narrow them (Golden, 2000). Because calculators are so cheap, in
comparison with computers, most schools can afford to provide them for each student, therefore, this
is the only technology readily available to low income schools and calculators are often overused
(Golden, 2000). In addition, another concern with calculators is that many children feel they are
cheating, taking the easy way out, or taking and illegal shortcut by using a calculator. They think they
are skipping out on the work and by doing so are being immoral (Dresdeck, 1999).
On the contrary, advocates of calculator use in the classroom claim that calculators allow students to
spend less time on tedious calculations and more time on understanding and solving problems, help
students develop better number sense, allow students to study math concepts that they could otherwise
not have time to perform without calculators, allow students who are normally turned off to math

Freedom In Lord Of The Flies
Freedom vs Safety In the novels Night and Lord of the Flies, there are many parallels surrounding the
theme of freedom. Night portrays the historical events of World War II. The control factor in this story
is prominent. Hitler convinces his followers to help him imprison everyone that believes should not be
a part of his Aryan race. In Lord of the Flies the presence of captivity is still there, but less extreme. A
group of young boys are stranded on an island. In that sense, they are very much confined. However,
they retain the ability to think for themselves and choose their own actions. While there is a clear
difference between the two novels and they take place in opposing settings, they both explore the
same theme of freedom. They show ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The boys in Lord of the Flies are given total freedom, but are only able to maintain order for a short
period of time before everything goes south. In Lord of the Flies the pain is in the struggle between
the boys who revert, through fear, to a primitive state and turn into savage hunters, and those who are
trying vainly to preserve foresight and order, (Pritchett). The boys are thrust into an environment
where they no longer have the pressures of society compelling them to be civilized. In the initial
encounter with the pig, Jack is unable to overcome his trained aversion to violence to even strike a
blow at the animal. Soon, however he and his choirboys turned hunters make their first kill. They
rationalize that they must kill the animals for meat. The next step back from civilization occurs and the
meat pretext is dropped; the real objective is to work their will on others, (Slayton). That is just one
example of the horrors that can occur when freedom is given to those who are not ready to use it
responsibly. It is clear that freedom can be good or bad, that being said, the opposite must also be true;
there are some cases where a controlled lifestyle can be beneficial to those living

The Struggles And Inequalities Of Mexican Americans
In the educational setting, Mexican Americans have faced discrimination, segregation, and inequality
for many years. This paper discusses the struggles and inequalities that Mexican Americans have
faced in education. I will focus on different educational time periods and discuss the problems and
struggles that occurred in those time periods. The time periods that I give focus to include education in
the Spanish Mexican era (1519 1848), education and early Anglo rule in the Southwest (1836 1890),
the expansion of American education (1890 1960), and education in the contemporary period (1960
present). Education in the Spanish Mexican era lasted from 1519 until 1848. During this period,
education occurred in informal and formal settings and was aimed towards the Indian population, who
were Spanish subjects. Education in informal settings was the general norm and the most important
informal settings were missions, presidios, and civilian settlements. The purpose of educating the
Indians was to substitute their identity with a Spanish one and to also teach them the acceptance of
their social relegation. The way the Spanish did this was by teaching the Indians literacy, music, the
Catholic faith, Spanish manners, and by repressing their indigenous religious and social beliefs
(Kloosterman 2). Education and the early Anglo rule in the Southwest lasted from 1836 until 1890.
From 1836 to about 1850, formal education took place in schools that were founded by the Catholic
Church.

George Orwell Courage
In Shooting an Elephant , Orwell, being a police officer, is going through some tough times. The
reason being was because many of the people in the area, in which he resided, hated Europeans. In the
story, Orwell is told that an elephant has gone on a rampage and is asked to deal with the situation.
The elephant s rampage had come to an end and it was peacefully eating grass He took not the
slightest notice of the crowd s approach. He was tearing up bunches of grass, beating them against his
knees to clean them and stuffing them into his mouth (George Orwell, 142). He wanted to leave the
elephant be, because he then felt the obligation of having to shoot the elephant because that was what
he was expected to do. For it is the condition of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Jules Gabriel Verne s The Mysterious Island
The Mysterious Island
The novel, The Mysterious Island, was written by legendary French 19th Century author, Jules Gabriel
Verne (1828 1905). Verne is widely considered to be the Father of science fiction writings/novels,
often unintentionally predicting future technologies such as submarines, missiles, rocket ships, etc. He
is also known for his many works, for example, Journey to the Center of the Earth, Twenty Thousand
Leagues Under the Sea, Around the World in 80 Days and, the subject of this book report, The
Mysterious Island. I chose this book, not only because it interested me, but because I had started to
read it a few years ago but never got the chance to finish it and it was collecting dust and so I thought I
should use this opportunity to read it. Some interesting facts about the novel include that I managed to
find are that in the original French version of the book, some of the main characters are given slightly
different names: Gédéon Spillet, Nabuchodonosor (Nab) and Harbert Brown as opposed to Gideon
Spilett, Neb and Herbert Brown. Furthermore, there some date/time discrepancies, for example, the
story takes place after the American Civil War (between 1861 and 1865) and Captain Nemo is seen to
have died within this time period, while in the book, Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea, which
takes place 1867 and 1868, Nemo is still alive. Other things to note is that there have been about 11
different film and television adaptations made based on the

Modernism Poetry Analysis
Modernism is a movement that took place between the late 19th and early 20th centuries around the
idea that poetry and other works of art should break the normal structure and break tradition. Imagisim
is a movement that brought about modernism and was focused around the idea that poetry should have
a clear and descriptive language and should bring an image to the readers mind. In Archibald
MacLeish s poem, Ars Poetica he asserts that a poem carries meaning in itself and has just as much
meaning as the thing it describes. The poem is structured as a guide to how a poem should be written
and is divided into three stanzas describing different aspects of a poem. In the first stanza, MacLeish is
telling the reader to show and not to tell. A poem should be palpable and mute As a globed fruit Dumb
As old medallions to the thumb.(MacLeish 1 4)
In these first two couplets MacLeish is telling us that poetry should have a certain authenticity to it,
that rather than describing something it should paint a picture in the mind of the reader. He is saying
that when you describe something it is too specific and when you paint a picture in the readers mind
you use abstract ideas in order to allow them to fill in the blanks. MacLeish does this himself in these
two couplets with the lines ...As a globed fruit... and ...As old medallions to the thumb... (MacLeish 2
4). He uses word choice such as globed fruit to give the reader an idea as to what he means but not tell
them

Essay about Leonard Peltier Should be Released from Prison
Leonard Peltier is currently serving time in the Leavenworth federal penitentiary for the shooting
deaths of two Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) agents. According to FBI documents, at around
11:50 A.M. on June 26th, 1975, agents Jack Color and Ron Williams were supposedly searching for
Jimmy Eagle, a thief wanted for stealing a pair of cowboy boots. The agents encroached on the
Jumping Bull Compound in Oglala, South Dakota of the Pine Ridge reservation, in two separate
vehicles that no one could recognize (Incident). In this area, there were several members of the
American Indian Movement (AIM). After the intrusion of the agents, someone and it is unsure who
fired a shot and a shoot out began. By the end of the shoot out at Pine ... Show more content on

In fact, the evidence is so inconclusive, contradictory, and vague that reasonable doubt abounds when
one tries to objectively look at the evidence at hand.
The evidence linking Peltier to the shooting of the either of the agents is non existent. First, there are
major problems with linking Peltier to any gun that may have caused a fatal injury. According to FBI
documentation, the FBI found a damaged AR 15 rifle in the burned out car of another AIM activist,
Robert Robideau, who was also at the Jumping Bull Compound on the day of June 26, 1975
(Incident). The FBI later would assert that the gun was Peltier s, and that it was matched to a shell
casing found in the trunk of one the agents cars.
However, according to a documented FBI ballistics test carried out on October 12, 1975, the AR 15
rifle found in Robideau s car didn t match bullet found on the scene; even if it is assumed to be Peltier
s gun, the gun cannot be linked to any bullets found in the crime scene (Incident). The FBI also did
another, less effective form of test on the bullet that showed that the bullet might have come from the
damaged gun. (Incident) However, since the second method of testing was more prone to fault, error,
and interpretation of the agents, it should not be used in light of the first. The best the FBI could prove
from the test was that the bullet came from

Con este cambio han surgido nuevas formas de hacer negocios, más simple, gastando menos tiempo y

A Picture Of Failure At Show Santiago s Persistence,...
The author starts the book with a picture of failure to show Santiago s persistence, passion, and
courage in the face of defeat.
Symbolism is when something abstract is represented with something concrete. Santiago is described
as, thin and gaunt with deep wrinkles in the back of his neck , brown blotches of benevolent skin
cancer , his hands had deep creased scars from handling heavy fish , and everything about him was old
except for his eyes and they were the same color as the sea and where cheerful and undefeated.
Santiago s hand scars are his battle wounds and shows that his nature is to overcome obstacles in his
path. His wrinkles and cancer spots make him look like a simple old man not concerned with looks
showing us his humility. Also his eyes that look undefeated are symbolic of his hope and
perseverance.
Santiago s home is constructed of tough bud shield from the royal palm. It has basic furniture, a bed, a
chair, and a table. The house has dirt floors and on the floor is a place to cook with charcoal. Santiago,
like his home, is simple, modest, and strong. Even though he lives somewhat on the goodwill of other
people, he manages to survive and endure. Santiago isn t caught up about when he attained humility
but recognizes that he does have this trait and is proud of it without being arrogant. Santiago shows
that humility and pride aren t mutually different and can be one in the same. Hemingway does admire
Santiago through the book. He is constantly

Notes on Nationalism- A2 Government and Politics
Nationalism
The nature of the nation and the differences between nations and states.
A nation can be defined as a group of people who consider themselves to have common circumstances
at birth. These common circumstances are strong enough for them to adopt collective goals based on
their national identity. Nationalism is therefore an emotional phenomenon felt by the people.
There are a number of typical circumstances of birth that may give rise to nationhood including
having a single common ancestor, a common historical experience, common culture, ethnic identity,
geographical proximity, religion, attachment to territory.
A state is a political reality. It either exists or it doesn t. In contrast to the concept of nation, it ... Show

Civic nationalism is much more inclusive as it s the citizenship which joins people, and citizenship
can be achieved by anyone. * Ethnic nationalism: nationhood is defined by language, religion,
customs and traditions. According to ethnic nationalists, it is not the state that creates the nation but
the nation, which creates the state. The glue that holds people together is not shared political rights,
but pre existing ethnic characteristics. Ethnic nationalism is more exclusive as it believes that not
everyone can become a part of a particular nation state.
The nation state and its alleged benefits
Maintains law and order within the territory
Secures the state against external threats
Develops and maintains useful relations with other states
Regulates the currency, the operation of markets and the economy in general.
Maintains the welfare of its people
Promotes economic and social progress
Protects and improves the physical environment of the country.
Relationship between nationalism and liberalism * Liberal nationalists demand that every recognisable
nation has the right to freedom from subjection to the rule of other nations and states. * Liberalism
demanded that every individual should be free, thus so should be every individual state. * The
freedom of nations and the freedom of individuals were inextricable linked, and individuals could not
be free unless the

College Vs Community College
Having money means being able to do many exciting things in life, like traveling around the
world, experiencing new and interesting things, being able to buy luxurious things like sports cars and
boats for hot summer days. Without money, nothing can be done. Going to college is a necessity that
everybody needs to become successful in life and be able to do fun and exciting things. One way to
save some money is, by considering going to a community college instead of a university for the first
two years and then transferring instead of going straight to a university. Students that choose to go to a
community college for their first two years will have an advantage when it comes to cost, class size,
personal interaction with their professors and an easier transition from high school than going straight
to a university. Therefore high school graduates should go to community college for their first two
years to save money and have a better experience.
An advantage when going to a community college first, rather than a university, is the class size. The
class size in a community college compared to a university is significantly smaller. There are about
thirty students in a class when it comes to community colleges, but in universities there are over a
hundred students in one class, all listening to one professor. Having this many students in one class
can be distracting to students, trying to focus and understand the instructor can be hard with hundreds
of other students around

The Spirit World Essay
This weeks reading continues with the theme of the of the Spirit world, with a specific interest in
angels and demons. The text begins by stating quite plainly that one cannot deny the existence of
angels under the authority of scripture. Yet, within this topic there seems to be an air of mysticism and
pleasantries around these beings. In other words, when discussing this topic it is rather important to
get away from the thought that we have an angel on one shoulder and a demon on the other. However,
this is about as far an understanding as a majority of common culture has allowed. All the while,
scripture is plain, angels do indeed exist throughout the whole new and old testament, from Genesis to
Revelation. The text then transitions from the existence of angelic beings to the biblical description of
them. The first characteristic that Ryrie mentions is the state of Angels as created beings as apposed to
beings that create. This simply means that angels were created by God and they ... Show more content

his personality is not described with the holiness of the angels. Coupling the existence of his
personality with Jesus encounter with him in the desert gives further insight to his personhood. Simply
put, Satan is not just a personification of evil because Jesus uses personal pronouns when speaking to
and about him. The text then mentions something that I find rather comforting. Satan is a created
being, he is not creator. He is not on an equal platform in power as God. This means that he possesses
limitations to his power. For God alone holds the power of omnipotence, omnipresence, and
omniscience. Though he is a mighty being he is still not as powerful as his creator. Satan is actually

Soviet economic and military support was crucial for Cuba. Soviet movements often aroused strong
disagreement from the United States. In 1962 the Soviet Union installed nuclear missile bases in
Cuba, the world stood at the brink of nuclear war as the U.S. government set up a naval blockade of
the island and demanded they remove the missiles. This was known as The Cuban missile crisis.
Cuban Soviet relations slowly deteriorated as Soviet political, economic, and social policies were
liberalized in the late 80s. The Cuban government refused to modify its approach to social and
economic policy. In 1991 the Soviet Union dissolved and withdrew its troops and its economic
support. The already troubled Cuban economy suffered further from the loss of vital military and
economic support. With severe shortages, unrest and dissatisfaction growing, Castro declared a special
period in peacetime of food rationing and energy conservation. Shortages of food, fuel, and medical
supplies were intensified by the ongoing U.S. trade embargo in Cuba.
Aware of China s success with a more capitalistic limited market, Castro decided to experiment with
capitalism. In 1993, he granted Cubans limited freedom to open small for profit businesses and allow
foreign tourism, including U.S dollars. But economic reform bred demand for political reforms. In
2003, Castro jailed many members from the Varela Project. A group who petitioned for political

From the beginning, Emilia can be seen as one who is entirely loyal and faithful to her husband, Iago.
Under the Cult of Domesticity it would be downright unacceptable for a woman to defy her husband.
Women were considered to be subservient to almost the entire male gender. Emilia s husband, Iago,
was a character who most would admit did not deserve much respect or loyalty at all. Iago would
continuously use his wit and intelligence to manipulate others only to further his own position in
society. Iago, with a great lack of sympathy for those he was hurting, focused solely on reaching his
end goal of self glorification. Despite Emilia s dissatisfaction with her marriage, she managed to
maintain composure in the beginning of the play. At one point in Act II, Iago makes a bold claim
stating that women, including Emilia, only speak their minds when the men are no longer present. He
believes they would not dare defy the rules of society in front of others. However, in privacy, Iago
surmises that these rules quickly vanish. Emilia then proceeds to respond to the accusation in none
other than a simple and respectful manner (Shakespeare 2.1.115 124). Shakespeare introduced Emilia
into his play as a stock character, one who represents a common stereotype. Whether or not it is
truthful, this excerpt clearly illustrates

went through a lot of things before he got to these positions. He has to prove that he was doing all the
good stuff for the Germany and the whole world but he actually wasn t. He wanted to be the strongest
person in the world so he got people from other country s to help him out but the us refused to join
him. He had 1 goal in life before he was in power and that was becoming an artist but unfortunately
his father forced him not to but he still tried but did not get in because of money problems. In 1933 he

How The And Start Right From The Beginning Here Essay
I m going to try and start right from the beginning here. When we think of data communication
nowadays, we think of digital information. We live in a world where technology is so abundant, that
we couldn t possibly imagine what life would be like without it. I m not talking about having to write
letters, or use the telephone exchange, I m talking about the beginning. Before there was data
communication, there was simply communication. So much about our evolution is unknown, that we
can t simply piece together the entire history of communication, but we as humans today do have a
brief understanding of how our species learnt to communicate, and how this has shaped our world
today. One of the first methods of communication (besides verbal) was paintings. Painting (or drawing
in general) is one of the earliest methods of communication, and is still very prominent to this day.
The act of turning thoughts or ideas into a physical representation develops in humans at a very young
age, and is the main form of communication used by babies up until they can speak. In my person
opinion, painting isn t a the best form of communication today, as writing is far easier to understand.
Painting is useful if you wish to convey your ideas through the use of metaphors, but the practicality
of using it today as a direct method of communication is limited. The next big advancement in
communication was the development of writing. Writing was developed in two stages. The first forms
of writing were

The Construction Of A Multimillion Dollar Chapel And...
I thought very carefully about what religion I would pick for the final project. What eventually
motivated me to choose the Church of Scientology is the construction of a multimillion dollar chapel
and community center on E. 125th St, which is very close to my community. This is a strategic
attempt to expand the Church of Scientology s base from more affluent areas to urban areas with
younger people.
Whenever I come home from Marist I have to take the Bx15 bus at 125th street to get across the river
to the Bronx. My commute takes me right passed the new Church of Scientology building and
community center. The construction site fascinated me, every time my bus drove past it I wondered
what was the purpose of the Church of Scientology. I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Initially Dianetics developed as a self help system, subsequently Hubbard established his ideas into a
wide ranging set of principles and rituals as part of a new religious movement that he called
Scientology. By August 1950, Hubbard s book had sold 55,000 copies, was selling at the rate of 4,000
a week and was being translated into French, German and Japanese.
An important segment of Dianetics is auditing which is defined as, the application of Dianetics or
Scientology processes and procedures to someone by a trained auditor. One formal definition of
auditing is: The action of asking a person a question, getting an answer to that question and
acknowledging him for that answer. Auditing in the framework of Dianetics or Scientology, an activity
where a person trained in auditing listens and gives auditing commands to a subject, who is referred to
as a pre clear , or more usually as a pc . Auditing sessions are confidential, the notes taken by the
auditor during auditing sessions, and kept in the pc folder . Auditing involves the use of processes,
which are sets of questions asked or instructions given by an auditor. When the specific objective of
any one process is accomplished, the process is concluded and another can then be used. By doing
this, the pc are said to be able to free themselves from unwanted barriers that inhibit their natural

were basically trailers stacked on top of each other. He lived with his aunt and her boyfriend who he

gone.Wade was never the social type of kid this is why he feels more alive in the oasis a virtual world
than in the real world.Wade started spending more time in the Oasis once James Halliday passed away.
Halliday was the video game designer responsible for creating the Oasis. For some reason his death
was big news and no one knew why, Wade himself said I couldn t understand why the media was
making such a big deal of the billionaires death (1) . Not long after everyone knew why it was such a
big deal. Halliday was billionaire with no family and no one to leave his money to. After all this mass
hysteria occurred around the world beause only one person would be able to inherit his fortune, that
person would be the one that would follow his conditions. After this moment occurred a string of
moments followed. For example, a moment that stood out for me was when the stacks blew up.
Moreover, before the stacks blew up Wade was dedicated to be the one who inherited Hallidays
fortune. One of the many things he did was that he downloaded one of Hallidays favorite show. All he

Formal Analysis Of An Art Work Essay
Primary Research: Formal Analysis of an Art Work
The art work that I have chosen for this formal analysis of an art work is the Painter of Paestum s
piece titled Red figure lebes gamikos (marriage vessel) it was made with terracotta red clay. This piece
was made between 340 330 B.C. It is approximately 10 inches in height. The present location of this
art piece is at The San Antonio Museum of Art in the Greek Late Classical section. The collection is a
permanent collection from Gilbert M. and Denman, Jr. whose funds were used to purchase the vessel.
( San Antonio Museum of Art Wall Text ). These marriage vessels are frequently shown in marriage
scenes on Greek vases. This marriage vessel could have been given as a wedding gift or used to
contain water for the bride s bath before the wedding ceremony. Also, it could have been placed by the
bride s door and was possibly used in a ritual of sprinkling the bride with water before the wedding
ceremony. The Red figure lebes gamikos (marriage vessel) has an oval shape where it is narrow at the
lip, the neck and the foot of the vessel while the lip and body of the marriage vessel are round. The
marriage vessel contains two high looped handles and a lid with a very intricate knob which is a
smaller marriage vessel which has two small high looped handles and an open lip with no lid. The
stand for the smaller vessel is a conical stand on top of the knob. On the top of the lid, there is a figure
of a woman that is facing the front

Helping the Housing Industry Essays
Helping the Housing Industry In the current state of the economy, one thing is sure to either help it
bounce back or keep it in the basement, and that is the housing industry. It is very hard to drive
anywhere and not see a for sale sign or two sitting in front yards. People have lost jobs or been cut
back, and therefore driven out of their homes they once loved for something cheaper that they can
afford. Not only did this hurt each individual family, it hurt the economy as a whole. People who still
have their houses and can afford them are losing money on them because the value of their houses has
dropped due to the other houses in their neighborhood sitting empty. There are many different ways
that could possibly help this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another problem with stopping the building of new houses would be that a lot of companies,
businesses, cities, states, etc., have all ready budgeted the money for these housing projects. They set
aside money years ago in preparation for these projects and have them locked into a commitment to do
these houses. My solution for both is the same, put everything into the old houses. I understand that
legal contracts may have been built up, and since I am not a lawyer, I am not going to pretend that I
know that there is a way to get out of them or anything along those lines, but at least try. You also can
not stop building where you have all ready broke ground. But, for those that may not have the
contracts solidified yet, or have not broke ground, but have the money budgeted for the project, the
solution is simple, change where that money goes. Budgets are changed all the time. I am a teacher
and our budgets have been changed plenty in the past year along with our salaries, so I know it can be
done. Take that money and put it into the houses that all ready exist. A lot of people are vandalizing
and destroying these properties. Some destroy them while they are moving out because they are
frustrated that they have been foreclosed on. Others are houses that have been destroyed by locals who
see these houses as another open place to graffiti, break things, or steal stuff from. Most of those who

Airpower And Its Effectiveness Against The Enemy s...
The concept of airpower and its effectiveness against the enemy s fielded military forces is well
documented in a number of literatures. In the history of American military, airpower has been
considered not only as the sharpest military sword but also a highly versatile set of tools used to
effectively promote national strategy. Airpower s effectiveness in support of national strategy has
significantly improved since 1945. The study of airpower exposed certain consistencies which have
affected its effectiveness. The theory and practice of airpower filled the past century with frequently
persuasive victories coupled with a historical documentation packed with arguable failures. It is
important to note that the effectiveness of airpower, as a military operational strategy, has triggered a
debate among proponents and non proponents. Some airpower theorists have debated its effectiveness.
Throughout history, the many claims about airpower s decisiveness to independently win wars or
conflicts have hindered the notional and real application of this instrument of power. This essay
highlights factors which consider the scope of the strengths and limitations of airpower that has been
and will continue to be effective throughout the 21st century.

Visiting Phantom Bodies
Art 1010 Art Appreciation
Visiting Phantom Bodies at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts (919 Broadway) was one of the most
thrilling experiences I have experienced in the recent past. The exhibition provided me with an
excellent opportunity to view countless works of art by a wide range of artists, an opportunity I
treasure especially because I got to learn a lot from the different works of art available at the center.
Phantom Bodies essentially refers to works of art that take a provocative approach in addressing
themes such as loss, trauma, and transformation, and which aim to demonstrate the possibility that an
animating spirit could potentially exist independently of the body (Frist Center for the Visual Arts
2015). I was most fascinated ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore, the work engages the mind in a lot and this happens because of the powerful impact of
color and texture, which serves to demonstrate emphasis and variety, which also occurs because the
artist has combined them in a perfectly symmetrical manner (John F. Kennedy Center for the
Performing Arts 2014). The thoughts relating to the body are powerful to the reader, and they serve to
remind the audience that death is inevitable and that we all have to face it as some point in our lives.
Therefore, the principles of texture and color trigger remembrance especially because of the numerous
repetitions that help to create balance, unity, harmony, and symmetry (Sayre 2012).
I find this painting to be quite appealing because it evokes many thoughts and emotions relating to the
mind, body, and the soul. More importantly, I find it very appealing because of its stunning beauty,
which mainly happens because the artist has focused a lot on achieving harmony, unity, balance, and
symmetry, all of which are critical in ensuring excellent art work. The use of butterflies helps to
enhance its appeal. Similarly, the use of different colors and different sizes of butterflies contributes a
lot in creating some form of texture and form that is appealing to the

The Effects Of Creating A Central Hub On The Griffith...
There would be positive and negative effects of creating this central hub on the Griffith campus. The
effects would also be split in to time frames, whether they are short term or long term effects. There
are going to be fewer positive effects in the short term but there will be more positive effects in the
longer term. The negative short term effects of expanding the library would be the congestion caused
by the original construction of the development. This construction would create traffic due to the
closure of roads near the site of the expansions. Positive short term effects could be the opportunity of
local students in Griffith University Gold Coast Campus to help with the construction planning or the
design of the expansion. The markets at night would also have some short term effects also creating
traffic problems throughout the campus. This would only create problems at the time of the markets
are being held. There wouldn t be any negative long term effects of the markets apart from the green
space not being able to be used on those nights for the future. There are numerous positives effects of
the markets being held at Griffith. The positive short term effects would create a steady income for
those involved in the markets. The markets will also help advertise local produce to the wider
community, supporting local farmers around the area and enticing local farmers to come down to the
campus and sell their produce.

Racial Inequalities In America
Racial Inequality and the American Dream

compared to a mere 8% of white people stopped (11 Facts about Racial Discrimination). America is
known as the land of opportunity. Immigrants and people come from far and wide seeking success and
achieving their dream in this land. There is a reason for that and throughout history this reason hasn t

There is a reason why blacks are quicker to be arrested then whites, or why white neighborhoods look
nicer then black neighborhoods, or why blacks are accused of crimes more than whites. Most people
will think it is the way of the world. Racial discrimination will always exist in America. It doesn t
need to be this way. Our government does not care enough about the black people and it clearly
shown. There should be a law against police just arresting blacks for no reason. They should have
their neighborhoods fixed up too. It shouldn t be legal to just be able to accuse a black person of a
crime because he happened to be standing there. There are so many more examples of this and it just
shows how are government thinks impartially too and doesn t believe the black people are important
or worth their time. Richard Hughes was very bothered by this and he did a study with his students to
show them how blacks are treated unfairly. They analyzed crimes and arrests of black people in the
past few months. The looked at how much less money the government puts into black housing then
whites. The sources include historical and recent statistics on race, wealth, and housing; a 1937
photograph by Margaret Bourke White juxtaposing African American flood victims and a billboard
proclaiming, There s No Way Like the American Way (Hughes139). The students after doing this all
got the point and all felt the same way as the teacher. a broader sense of racial discrimination, one
student wrote, Even after their emancipation after the Civil War, African Americans have faced many
forces preventing them from living the „American Dream‟ (139). He felt the importance of his
students going into the world after school, understanding this and maybe trying to get the government
to handle this issue.

Driving Under The Influence Of Drunk Driving
Driving under the influence (DUI), in numbers

In the same year, 9,967 people died in drunk driving crashes while 290,000 were injured.2 Lest we

Evidently, drunk driving remains to be one of the notorious banes in the society. Fortunately, this is

The Ideal American Family Analysis
As stated in an article by Kimi Kennedy entitled Television: The Ideal American Family, most
American families portrayed on television in the late 40s and early 50s consisted of a husband, wife
and 2.5 kids (Kennedy). In Arthur Miller s Death of a Salesman, the Loman family seems to perfectly
fit the mold of a family living the American dream; however, the actions of the family show that
everything is not what it seems. Although the Lomans appear to be the ideal family of the time, the
way in which the family treats each other directly contrast with other fictional families of the time.
The family s treatment of Happy exemplifies the lack of attention given to some children within
American families. Throughout the play, Happy often takes a back seat to Biff when it comes to
getting his parents attention. In Act I on pages 1851 1853 Happy says multiple times, I m ... Show

Willy is conflicted about his feelings toward Biff. On page 1844, while talking to Linda, Willy goes
from saying, The trouble is he s lazy... to saying That s one thing about Biff he s not lazy in a matter of

loves his father or not. On page 1864, Biff is confident in his love toward his mother yet, the love he
feels for his father seems to be an afterthought (Miller).
The Loman family seems like the ideal American family based on television in the 1940s and 50s.
Willy, Linda, Biff, and Happy, however, do not get along very well and most they all have secrets that
they keep from each other. The Lomans first appear to be a typical fictional family of the time
consisting of a mother, father, and two children, but soon show their flaws. Arthur Miller breaks the
mold for the fictional families of the time in his play Death of a Salesman by highlighting the flaws

performed in an Off Broadway theatre until it was moved in 1996 to Broadway s Nederlander Theatre.
With its success, director Chris Columbus transitioned the play into a film in 2005. The film has

The Story Of The Great Story Late August And School
It s late August and school is about to start, everyone s thinking of the great story s their going to tell
their friends when they get back. I had the perfect story to tell, my dad had just bought a motorcycle

help the Grandparents of the family have a garage sale. We were all together at the end of the day,
except my dad, and Aunt and Uncle, who were in the Cities. They were coming back to day, much to
our excitement. The sun was setting behind the big maple tree in the front yard, and a dark truck, with
its headlights shining through the darkness was coming our way. Dads back! my brother yelled in
excitement, catching everyone s attention. We ran out to go meet the truck as it came to a stop. Our
dad got out and told us he has a surprise for us. We followed him back around to the back of the truck.
Dad pulled the tail gate down, and I looked on in surprise. It s a motorcycle! Mom s not going to be
happy. Those were the first thoughts that came to mind as the miniature motorcycle was being lifted
out of the truck. It looked just like the motorcycles I d seen around town but smaller, the perfect size
for kids. It was cherry red and about 3 feet long and 2 feet high, it looked so small but awesome none
the less. We didn t get to drive the motorcycle that day because it needed to be tuned and my dad

The Importance Of Educational Psychology
Educational Psychology fosters an understanding for student development and helps teachers be
effective, design lessons and make a difference for their students. First we must define what education
psychology is, and how it applies student development and to the education community. The textbook,
Educational Psychology written by Anita Woolfolk, (2012), defines educational psychology as, A
distinct discipline with its own theories, research methods, problems, and techniques. Educational
psychologists do research on learning and teaching and, at the same time, work to improve educational
practice. (p. 12). Essentially, educational psychology is the study and research behind creative and
effective learning strategies and the principles for development and learning. It enables teachers to
reach and engage their students at the highest level of learning with effective learning strategies.
Learning educational psychology through the study of cognitive development and the influences on
children and adolescents as they grow, the implication of moral and identity development, as well as
obligations teachers have professionally to create safe learning environments that promote high
expectations and inclusion of all learners, helps teachers to nurture and understand their students. For
example, learning about student diversity and culture, characteristics, learning levels, how to design
and present content, enhance classroom management creating a safe effective learning

  • 2. Why Is Calculator Is Not Appropriate In The Classroom Math Research Paper Since the 1980 s calculator use in the classroom has been a huge controversy between educators (Golden, 2000). It is becoming increasingly common to use calculators in the classroom on a regular basis. Some states allow students to use calculators on standardized tests and as part of the regular curriculum (Dion, 2001). Because we live in such a technologically changing world, hand held calculators have been far surpassed and can be purchased for as low as $4.00 each. This low price however, has not swayed the many people that believe calculators are not appropriate in the classroom. These critics argue that calculators take away student s basic knowledge of mathematics, prevent children from truly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This evidence alone is enough proof, for some, that calculator use takes away basic skills and when given a test where these skills come into play, children do not perform well. It is believed that the difference in calculator use based on race and wealth may reinforce inequality in scholastic achievement, rather than narrow them (Golden, 2000). Because calculators are so cheap, in comparison with computers, most schools can afford to provide them for each student, therefore, this is the only technology readily available to low income schools and calculators are often overused (Golden, 2000). In addition, another concern with calculators is that many children feel they are cheating, taking the easy way out, or taking and illegal shortcut by using a calculator. They think they are skipping out on the work and by doing so are being immoral (Dresdeck, 1999). On the contrary, advocates of calculator use in the classroom claim that calculators allow students to spend less time on tedious calculations and more time on understanding and solving problems, help students develop better number sense, allow students to study math concepts that they could otherwise not have time to perform without calculators, allow students who are normally turned off to math increase ... • 3. Freedom In Lord Of The Flies Freedom vs Safety In the novels Night and Lord of the Flies, there are many parallels surrounding the theme of freedom. Night portrays the historical events of World War II. The control factor in this story is prominent. Hitler convinces his followers to help him imprison everyone that believes should not be a part of his Aryan race. In Lord of the Flies the presence of captivity is still there, but less extreme. A group of young boys are stranded on an island. In that sense, they are very much confined. However, they retain the ability to think for themselves and choose their own actions. While there is a clear difference between the two novels and they take place in opposing settings, they both explore the same theme of freedom. They show ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The boys in Lord of the Flies are given total freedom, but are only able to maintain order for a short period of time before everything goes south. In Lord of the Flies the pain is in the struggle between the boys who revert, through fear, to a primitive state and turn into savage hunters, and those who are trying vainly to preserve foresight and order, (Pritchett). The boys are thrust into an environment where they no longer have the pressures of society compelling them to be civilized. In the initial encounter with the pig, Jack is unable to overcome his trained aversion to violence to even strike a blow at the animal. Soon, however he and his choirboys turned hunters make their first kill. They rationalize that they must kill the animals for meat. The next step back from civilization occurs and the meat pretext is dropped; the real objective is to work their will on others, (Slayton). That is just one example of the horrors that can occur when freedom is given to those who are not ready to use it responsibly. It is clear that freedom can be good or bad, that being said, the opposite must also be true; there are some cases where a controlled lifestyle can be beneficial to those living ... • 4. The Struggles And Inequalities Of Mexican Americans In the educational setting, Mexican Americans have faced discrimination, segregation, and inequality for many years. This paper discusses the struggles and inequalities that Mexican Americans have faced in education. I will focus on different educational time periods and discuss the problems and struggles that occurred in those time periods. The time periods that I give focus to include education in the Spanish Mexican era (1519 1848), education and early Anglo rule in the Southwest (1836 1890), the expansion of American education (1890 1960), and education in the contemporary period (1960 present). Education in the Spanish Mexican era lasted from 1519 until 1848. During this period, education occurred in informal and formal settings and was aimed towards the Indian population, who were Spanish subjects. Education in informal settings was the general norm and the most important informal settings were missions, presidios, and civilian settlements. The purpose of educating the Indians was to substitute their identity with a Spanish one and to also teach them the acceptance of their social relegation. The way the Spanish did this was by teaching the Indians literacy, music, the Catholic faith, Spanish manners, and by repressing their indigenous religious and social beliefs (Kloosterman 2). Education and the early Anglo rule in the Southwest lasted from 1836 until 1890. From 1836 to about 1850, formal education took place in schools that were founded by the Catholic Church. ... • 5. George Orwell Courage In Shooting an Elephant , Orwell, being a police officer, is going through some tough times. The reason being was because many of the people in the area, in which he resided, hated Europeans. In the story, Orwell is told that an elephant has gone on a rampage and is asked to deal with the situation. The elephant s rampage had come to an end and it was peacefully eating grass He took not the slightest notice of the crowd s approach. He was tearing up bunches of grass, beating them against his knees to clean them and stuffing them into his mouth (George Orwell, 142). He wanted to leave the elephant be, because he then felt the obligation of having to shoot the elephant because that was what he was expected to do. For it is the condition of ... • 7. Jules Gabriel Verne s The Mysterious Island The Mysterious Island The novel, The Mysterious Island, was written by legendary French 19th Century author, Jules Gabriel Verne (1828 1905). Verne is widely considered to be the Father of science fiction writings/novels, often unintentionally predicting future technologies such as submarines, missiles, rocket ships, etc. He is also known for his many works, for example, Journey to the Center of the Earth, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, Around the World in 80 Days and, the subject of this book report, The Mysterious Island. I chose this book, not only because it interested me, but because I had started to read it a few years ago but never got the chance to finish it and it was collecting dust and so I thought I should use this opportunity to read it. Some interesting facts about the novel include that I managed to find are that in the original French version of the book, some of the main characters are given slightly different names: Gédéon Spillet, Nabuchodonosor (Nab) and Harbert Brown as opposed to Gideon Spilett, Neb and Herbert Brown. Furthermore, there some date/time discrepancies, for example, the story takes place after the American Civil War (between 1861 and 1865) and Captain Nemo is seen to have died within this time period, while in the book, Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea, which takes place 1867 and 1868, Nemo is still alive. Other things to note is that there have been about 11 different film and television adaptations made based on the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Modernism Poetry Analysis Modernism is a movement that took place between the late 19th and early 20th centuries around the idea that poetry and other works of art should break the normal structure and break tradition. Imagisim is a movement that brought about modernism and was focused around the idea that poetry should have a clear and descriptive language and should bring an image to the readers mind. In Archibald MacLeish s poem, Ars Poetica he asserts that a poem carries meaning in itself and has just as much meaning as the thing it describes. The poem is structured as a guide to how a poem should be written and is divided into three stanzas describing different aspects of a poem. In the first stanza, MacLeish is telling the reader to show and not to tell. A poem should be palpable and mute As a globed fruit Dumb As old medallions to the thumb.(MacLeish 1 4) In these first two couplets MacLeish is telling us that poetry should have a certain authenticity to it, that rather than describing something it should paint a picture in the mind of the reader. He is saying that when you describe something it is too specific and when you paint a picture in the readers mind you use abstract ideas in order to allow them to fill in the blanks. Essay about Leonard Peltier Should be Released from Prison Leonard Peltier is currently serving time in the Leavenworth federal penitentiary for the shooting deaths of two Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) agents. According to FBI documents, at around 11:50 A.M. on June 26th, 1975, agents Jack Color and Ron Williams were supposedly searching for Jimmy Eagle, a thief wanted for stealing a pair of cowboy boots. The agents encroached on the Jumping Bull Compound in Oglala, South Dakota of the Pine Ridge reservation, in two separate vehicles that no one could recognize (Incident). In this area, there were several members of the American Indian Movement (AIM). After the intrusion of the agents, someone and it is unsure who fired a shot and a shoot out began. In fact, the evidence is so inconclusive, contradictory, and vague that reasonable doubt abounds when one tries to objectively look at the evidence at hand. The evidence linking Peltier to the shooting of the either of the agents is non existent. First, there are major problems with linking Peltier to any gun that may have caused a fatal injury. According to FBI documentation, the FBI found a damaged AR 15 rifle in the burned out car of another AIM activist, Robert Robideau, who was also at the Jumping Bull Compound on the day of June 26, 1975 (Incident). The FBI later would assert that the gun was Peltier s, and that it was matched to a shell casing found in the trunk of one the agents cars. However, according to a documented FBI ballistics test carried out on October 12, 1975, the AR 15 rifle found in Robideau s car didn t match bullet found on the scene; even if it is assumed to be Peltier s gun, the gun cannot be linked to any bullets found in the crime scene (Incident). The FBI also did another, less effective form of test on the bullet that showed that the bullet might have come from the damaged gun. (Incident) However, since the second method of testing was more prone to fault, error, and interpretation of the agents, it should not be used in light of the first. The best the FBI could prove from the test was that the bullet came from ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. A Picture Of Failure At Show Santiago s Persistence,... The author starts the book with a picture of failure to show Santiago s persistence, passion, and courage in the face of defeat. Symbolism is when something abstract is represented with something concrete. Santiago is described as, thin and gaunt with deep wrinkles in the back of his neck , brown blotches of benevolent skin cancer , his hands had deep creased scars from handling heavy fish , and everything about him was old except for his eyes and they were the same color as the sea and where cheerful and undefeated. Santiago s hand scars are his battle wounds and shows that his nature is to overcome obstacles in his path. His wrinkles and cancer spots make him look like a simple old man not concerned with looks showing us his humility. Also his eyes that look undefeated are symbolic of his hope and perseverance. Santiago s home is constructed of tough bud shield from the royal palm. It has basic furniture, a bed, a chair, and a table. The house has dirt floors and on the floor is a place to cook with charcoal. Santiago, like his home, is simple, modest, and strong. Even though he lives somewhat on the goodwill of other people, he manages to survive and endure. Without money, nothing can be done. Going to college is a necessity that everybody needs to become successful in life and be able to do fun and exciting things. One way to save some money is, by considering going to a community college instead of a university for the first two years and then transferring instead of going straight to a university. Students that choose to go to a community college for their first two years will have an advantage when it comes to cost, class size, personal interaction with their professors and an easier transition from high school than going straight to a university. Therefore high school graduates should go to community college for their first two years to save money and have a better experience. An advantage when going to a community college first, rather than a university, is the class size. The class size in a community college compared to a university is significantly smaller. There are about thirty students in a class when it comes to community colleges, but in universities there are over a hundred students in one class, all listening to one professor. The text begins by stating quite plainly that one cannot deny the existence of angels under the authority of scripture. Yet, within this topic there seems to be an air of mysticism and pleasantries around these beings. In other words, when discussing this topic it is rather important to get away from the thought that we have an angel on one shoulder and a demon on the other. However, this is about as far an understanding as a majority of common culture has allowed. All the while, scripture is plain, angels do indeed exist throughout the whole new and old testament, from Genesis to Revelation. The text then transitions from the existence of angelic beings to the biblical description of them. Satan is a created being, he is not creator. He is not on an equal platform in power as God. This means that he possesses limitations to his power. This was known as The Cuban missile crisis. Cuban Soviet relations slowly deteriorated as Soviet political, economic, and social policies were liberalized in the late 80s. Iago would continuously use his wit and intelligence to manipulate others only to further his own position in society. Iago, with a great lack of sympathy for those he was hurting, focused solely on reaching his end goal of self glorification. Despite Emilia s dissatisfaction with her marriage, she managed to maintain composure in the beginning of the play. At one point in Act II, Iago makes a bold claim stating that women, including Emilia, only speak their minds when the men are no longer present. I m not talking about having to write letters, or use the telephone exchange, I m talking about the beginning. Before there was data communication, there was simply communication. So much about our evolution is unknown, that we can t simply piece together the entire history of communication, but we as humans today do have a brief understanding of how our species learnt to communicate, and how this has shaped our world today. One of the first methods of communication (besides verbal) was paintings. Painting (or drawing in general) is one of the earliest methods of communication, and is still very prominent to this day. The act of turning thoughts or ideas into a physical representation develops in humans at a very young age, and is the main form of communication used by babies up until they can speak. In my person opinion, painting isn t a the best form of communication today, as writing is far easier to understand. Painting is useful if you wish to convey your ideas through the use of metaphors, but the practicality of using it today as a direct method of communication is limited. The next big advancement in communication was the development of writing. Writing was developed in two stages. The first forms of writing were ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In the history of American military, airpower has been considered not only as the sharpest military sword but also a highly versatile set of tools used to effectively promote national strategy. Airpower s effectiveness in support of national strategy has significantly improved since 1945. The study of airpower exposed certain consistencies which have affected its effectiveness. The theory and practice of airpower filled the past century with frequently persuasive victories coupled with a historical documentation packed with arguable failures. It is important to note that the effectiveness of airpower, as a military operational strategy, has triggered a debate among proponents and non proponents. The thoughts relating to the body are powerful to the reader, and they serve to remind the audience that death is inevitable and that we all have to face it as some point in our lives. The effects would also be split in to time frames, whether they are short term or long term effects. There are going to be fewer positive effects in the short term but there will be more positive effects in the longer term. The negative short term effects of expanding the library would be the congestion caused by the original construction of the development. This construction would create traffic due to the closure of roads near the site of the expansions. Positive short term effects could be the opportunity of local students in Griffith University Gold Coast Campus to help with the construction planning or the design of the expansion. There is a reason why blacks are quicker to be arrested then whites, or why white neighborhoods look nicer then black neighborhoods, or why blacks are accused of crimes more than whites. Most people will think it is the way of the world. Racial discrimination will always exist in America. It doesn t need to be this way. Our government does not care enough about the black people and it clearly shown. There should be a law against police just arresting blacks for no reason. They should have their neighborhoods fixed up too. It shouldn t be legal to just be able to accuse a black person of a crime because he happened to be standing there. There are so many more examples of this and it just shows how are government thinks impartially too and doesn t believe the black people are important or worth their time. Richard Hughes was very bothered by this and he did a study with his students to show them how blacks are treated unfairly. They analyzed crimes and arrests of black people in the past few months. The looked at how much less money the government puts into black housing then whites. The sources include historical and recent statistics on race, wealth, and housing; a 1937 photograph by Margaret Bourke White juxtaposing African American flood victims and a billboard proclaiming, There s No Way Like the American Way (Hughes139). The students after doing this all got the point and all felt the same way as the teacher. a broader sense of racial discrimination, one student wrote, Even after their emancipation after the Civil War, African Americans have faced many forces preventing them from living the „American Dream‟ (139). He felt the importance of his students going into the world after school, understanding this and maybe trying to get the government to handle this issue. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 31. The Ideal American Family Analysis As stated in an article by Kimi Kennedy entitled Television: The Ideal American Family, most American families portrayed on television in the late 40s and early 50s consisted of a husband, wife and 2.5 kids (Kennedy). In Arthur Miller s Death of a Salesman, the Loman family seems to perfectly fit the mold of a family living the American dream; however, the actions of the family show that everything is not what it seems. Although the Lomans appear to be the ideal family of the time, the way in which the family treats each other directly contrast with other fictional families of the time. The family s treatment of Happy exemplifies the lack of attention given to some children within American families. The Lomans first appear to be a typical fictional family of the time consisting of a mother, father, and two children, but soon show their flaws. Dads back! my brother yelled in excitement, catching everyone s attention. We ran out to go meet the truck as it came to a stop. Our dad got out and told us he has a surprise for us.
