Hellenistic Analysis
Alexander brought to the conquered land the Greeks, and with them the Greek culture. The people of
these lands had to adapt to the changing views and adopted the Greek language in order to better
understand each other. However, Hellenism was the blending of different cultures, like Egyptian,
Persian, Indian and the Greeks, that would bring diversity to these conquered lands.
A city becoming Hellenised meant that the locals had come into contact with the Greeks and
knowledge of the Greek culture, language and literature. In conjunction with philosophers, who views
of religion, was somewhat outside the normal views, meaning that they challenged the significance of
religious views, perhaps in an attempt to undermine these new religions.

This is not to say that they liked the Greeks in their lands. However, there were Jews who liked the
idea of the Greek culture, and adopted parts of the Greek culture into their own culture. The more
traditional Jews found the Greeks offensive, with men strutting around naked in the gyms for all to
see, and it was against the Jewish laws to be seen naked. Because of their nakedness the Jews could
also see that some men were uncircumcised, which was again offensive to the Jewish society for they
considered them as unclean and impure. Furthermore, the Greeks ability to make better deals and
profit also upset the Jews. Not only that, but they further disliked the fact that the Greeks spilling
swine blood for sacrifices to their Pagan Gods, especially when swine was taboo in the Jewish culture.
Another thing to consider too was that the more extreme Jews, did not like the idea of their brethren
taking on a more Hellenistic lifestyle, as they were scared that their God would punish them for such
an act. Eventually they rebelled against the Hellenistic way due to Antiochus IV stealing from their
sacred temple and forcing the Jewish people to make sacrifices to the Pagan Gods. However, this is

Creationism And Evolution Of School
Creationism and Evolution in school Almost every child has to go to school at some point in his or her
life. The legal age is between six and fifteen years old. Whether it is home school, private school,
public school, or any other way of being taught, it is a law that you have to attend school until you are
sixteen. (Queensland Para 1) That is, unless you can prove to the State Department of Education that
you should not be in school. What is taught in school applies to almost all Americans and applied to
almost all of Americans in their school career. That is whether they are still in school or they have

Creationism has undeniable facts. Many think it should be taught and at least be given a fair chance to
be put up against evolution. Evolution also has some true undeniable facts as well. As we learn more
and more every day, those facts tend to change though, unlike creationism which has stayed the same
since the beginning of time.
It is unfair that something is being taught without even being put into question or put up to another
opinion of why the Earth is here and how it got here. An example could be that in school, teachers
should not teach you about what political party they agree with and why that party is right. They
should be talking about both parties and giving both sides of the story and saying why they disagree.
This would show that they want you to be nonbiased and try to let you pick for yourself instead of
pushing you to side with their opinions. It is not right to only teach children, or anybody for that
matter only one view of an argument. Both sides should be taught in a way that is the least biased and
let the kids decide for themselves what is right or wrong. Whatever they choose, we need to support
them even if it is against what we believe. The most important thing we can do for our kids is to teach
them to think for themselves. But we cannot do that if we only give one side of the story, so they of

Essay Flannery O Connor s Good Country People
Flannery O Connor s Good Country People
In Good Country People by Flannery O Connor, uses symbolism in the choice of names, almost to the
point of being ironic and humorous.
These names center around the personality and demeanor of the characters.
Hulga, once known as Joy, simply changed her name because it was the ugliest she could think of.
Mrs. Freeman s name is ironic because she is burdened by the land that she works, so is not really
free. Mrs. Hopewell?s name is also ironic, because she trys to provide hope, but is in fact empty in her
talk. Each one of these characters names, Hulga, Mrs. Freeman, and
Mrs. Hopewell, show the symbolism used by Flannery O Connor.

Mrs. Freeman is the tenet farmer for Mrs. Hopewell. Mrs. Freeman is very nosy and has a fondness
for the grotesque and secret infections. She has an attitude of trying to be someone she is not, almost
as if she is trying to be like Mrs. Hopewell. When Mrs. Hopewell stated to Mrs. Freeman one of her
many phrases ?that life was like that, Mrs. Freeman would say, ?I always said so myself.? Nothing had
been arrived at by anyone that had not first been arrived at by herself.? Mrs. Freeman?s name could
mean two things. One possible meaning is that a freed slave was called a freeman, but
Mrs. Freeman is a white tenet farmer, so technically she is not free. This could show how Mrs.
Freeman would rather be a freed black slave, rather than a poor white farmer tied to the land. The
other meaning is that when people first came to America, many people would become indentured
servants, and then over time they would eventually get their freedom. These people were called
freeman. This meaning could show how Mrs. Freeman had a desire to be free and not work for
someone else. One day Mrs.
Hopewell had said to Mrs. Freeman, ?You know, you?re the wheel behind the wheel,? and winked,
Mrs. Freeman had said, ?I know it. I?ve always been quick.? This shows that perhaps Mrs.

Language In The Dark Knight
In the film The Dark Knight, the director Christopher Nolan uses many language features to
effectively highlight the contrast between good and evil, and that people have both good and evil
within them. One of the most significant scenes that highlights these ideas is the scene where Bane has
been knocked to the ground by Batman which crosscuts with the flashback scene of Miranda and Bane
s past.
The language features character actions, camera work and characterisation, helped me see the contrast
between good and evil, and how people have both good and evil within them, in the scene where
Batman has knocked Bane to the ground and is viciously punching him. As Batman is doing this,
Nolan has angled the camera at a low angle on Batman to make him look big, scary, ... Show more

Nolan wants us the audience to see that no one is perfectly good, not even Batman because he abuses
people even though it is for a good purpose. Nolan wants us to see that not even someone as
righteously good as Batman, is perfectly good, they still have their evil flaws. Understanding this
makes us humans feel scared and aware that even friendly and nice people, like ourselves, can be as
violent and scary as Batman was.
Nolan uses the language features crosscutting, camera work, costume and symbolism to highlight the
contrast between good and evil and that people have both good and evil within them in the flashback
scene, where we see that, as a child, Miranda was saved by Bane from people who were attacking the
people in the pit she was in, Bane included. After we, the audience, see this, the scene crosscuts to a
scene of the present. Nolan uses a close up camera shot on Bane s face so that we see the tear that rolls
down his cheek. By crosscutting the scene where Bane saves Miranda, with the close up of Bane s
face, our perspective on Bane s character changes and we see the contrast between good and evil in
him. Throughout the film, Nolan had us convinced that Bane was just pure evil,

Reasons And Causes Of The War Of Independence
REASONS AND CAUSES OF WAR OF INDEPENDENCE (1857) War of independence: War of
Independence is an important landmark in the Sub Continent history. This War was fought in 1857
against the British by Indians in order to get rid of their authority. It is also given names as Indian
Revolt as well as Indian Rebellion. The main causes of the War were social, economic, political,
military and religious. It was an extreme effort made by people of subcontinent, but they failed due to
some reasons including, disunity, mutual jealousies and lack of strong leadership etc. CAUSES OF

Child Sexual Abuse Within Institutions
Numerous problems are connected with the issue of child sexual abuse. It is both a public health
problem and a children s rights issue. Child sexual abuse refers to any act by a person using their
authority or power over a child or young person to engage them in any form of sexual activity
(DEECD and DHS, 2010). Victims of sexual abuse suffer serious psychological and physical
consequences. This paper discusses the factors which facilitate or prevent the identification and
reporting of child sexual abuse within institutions. The paper also analyses the framework for
strengthening child protection practices in schools by increasing the capacity of the professionals for
proactive work towards creating child safe organisations.
DEECD and DHS, 2010 Physical evidence:
Certain physical signs like injury to the genital or rectal areas , bleeding or discharge from vaginal or
rectal areas and bruising and other injury to breasts, buttocks and thighs may be present because of
sexual abuse. Some children may wear extra layers of clothing to hide their injuries and may refuse to
remove excess clothing in hot weather. Presence of foreign bodies in vagina and/or rectum ,
inflammation in the genital area and sexually transmitted diseases are also strong indicators of sexual
abuse. Pregnancy in very young adolescents forms a strong ground for suspicion of sexual abuse.

The United Nations Security Council
The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is one of the principal organs of the United Nations.
According to article 24 of the UN Charter, the Security Council s primary responsibility is the
maintenance of international peace and security (UN Charter, 1945). In order to achieve this, the
UNSC is the only United Nations organ that is able to issue resolutions that are legally binding on all
member states (Butler, 2012:27). However the UNSC is far from perfect and there are flaws that
prevent it from successfully carrying out its mandate. Since it s creation and the end of the Cold War,
the UNSC has found it increasingly difficult to successfully maintain international peace and security.
Criticisms have been raised on the UNSC s small size, unequal representation, exclusive nature and
veto powers. In addition to this there have been strong calls for reform. In this paper I will discuss the
flaws that prevent the UNSC from working effectively these include political paralysis, use of the veto
and the hyper puissance of the USA superpower.
In order for the UNSC to be legitimate, it must be all encompassing and reflect an equal representation
of the modern era. The Council s structure still reflects that of a by gone era, holding a largely similar
structure as it had in 1946. The first and only reform of the UNSC occurred in 1965 when the number
of non permanent members was increased. The reason for this being the number of UN Member states
had substantially increased

By 1945, nearly everyone in the African American community had heard gospel music (2). At this
time, gospel music was a sacred folk music with origins in field hollers, work songs, slave songs,

Characters such as Micky mouse, Donald duck, Bugs bunny and Daffy Duck were shown on
television screens in many homes. These characters and their crazy personas caught the eyes of many
children and as they had very little dialogue and simple plots and storylines they were easy enough for
children to watch. These Cartoonists created cartoons that shaped what was known as Saturday
morning cartoons . There were also a lot of governing bodies such as the Hayes code (1930 to 1968)
which kept cartoons innocent and ensured that adult themes were kept out of cartoons, epically those
appearing on television, this brought about a decline in adults watching cartoons as most cartoons at
the time were too simple minded and not complex enough for adults. However the comic book
industry still thrived and was aimed at a slightly older audience.
Later on in the 1960 s Hanna Barbera created cartoons such as Scooby doo, the Flintstones and the
Jetsons. These cartoons had more dialogue than the average cartoons, contained more clever and witty
jokes and were well suited for an adult as well as a younger audience. They focused on the average
family and showed some of the issues faced in family life. Some argue that the Flintstones was the
first mainstream adult cartoon to go on air. The Flintstones was originally aimed at an adult audience

Virginia Pine Research Paper
Virginia Pine (Pinus virginiana Mill), once called a weed or scrub pine, now has its place alongside
trees with commercial importance (Carter and Snow Jr. 1990). Virginia pine is a coniferous tree
species native to North America that can be found in seventeen states which extends from southern
New Jersey down to Northern Georgia and Northern Alabama (Sullivan 1993). Its range also extends
from southern Ohio to South Carolina. Some common ecosystem communities that Virginia pine can
be found in includes longleaf (Pinus palustris) slash pine (Pinus elliottii) communities, loblolly pine

As stated earlier Virginia pine was once considered a weedy species with no economic value. As
management, technology, and a greater understanding of the forest ecosystem so did the view point on
Virginia pine s economical uses. Virginia pine is now considered a valuable tree species with many
uses such as wildlife habitat, Christmas tree production, wood uses, reclaimed areas, etc. (Carter and
Snow Jr. 1990). According to research done on the behavior of woodpeckers in forested stands, such
as Virginia pine, it was found that the forest stands contribute to woodpecker habitat and that they
need proper management to keep providing habitat in the future (Crawford and Conner 1974). A key
feature of Virginia pine is that as the tree ages it is prone to wood softening due to fungal decay
(Carter and Snow Jr. 1990). This allows the woodpeckers to create nesting habitat within the trees
bole. Another aspect of Virginia pine is that it provides a source of food to many bird species,
including woodpeckers. As insects drill into the bark of the tree resin is released trapping the insects
allowing the birds to eat right off the tree (Crawford and Conner 1974). Virginia pine is also important
for browse by deer and rabbits. A study was in in 1970 to determine the caloric intake of Virginia pine
at different times in the season, the trees age, and even position in the stand (Madgwick 1970). It was
found that the caloric values increased in new shoots, needles, and cones

The Fundamental Principles Of The Us Constitution
One of the fundamental principles of the US Constitution is the freedom of speech. Something so
ingrained in the country, that it is often an afterthought for many Americans. John Stuart Mill believes
that freedom of expression and speech is a necessity for the human race to advance and evolve. Mill s
justification of this absolute freedom come from the understanding that mistakes and choices made by
the person leads to progress and the development of your individual self. He also argues that speech
must be absolute because the only way harm can truly come about, is through action. Mill s harm
principle states that, the only reason for power to be legitimately exercised over a people is to prevent
harm to others. It also sought to limit the actions of a possible tyrannical majority that begins to
impose its interests on the public. Mill claims that the only limit that should be placed on expression is
if it leads to the harms of others, it is not to be infringed upon if it only harms the individual. James
Madison agreed with many of the concepts of Mill s free speech, but thought a limit on speech was a
sign of a breach of power, which was reflected in the drafting of the First Amendment. Recent
Supreme Court cases have ruled in favor of limiting certain forms of speech that speaks to a clear and
present danger, when words aren t simply content, but a vehicle for action. Mill argues that the
freedom of dissenting speech is just as, if not more important than the popular

Islets were fairly numerous surrounded by the sero acinar cells which were well stained and comprised
of the exocrine component of pancreas. In the diabetic group, there were necrotic and atrophic features
in most β cells of Islets of Langerhans and vacuoles were present. There was a marked reduction in the
number of islets. Following treatment with 400 mg/kg of fenugreek + 250 mg/kg of metformin, there
was a marked increase in the number of functioning β cells with restoration of normal volume density
nearly similar to that of the control group.

Nerve: In the control group, sections of the nerve showed myelin sheaths wrapping around the axons
which were centrally placed. The nuclei of the Schwan cells are elongated and oriented longitudinally.
The transverse sections of the nerve showed the bundles of the axons covered by the perineurium. In
the diabetic group, there was splitting of the axon bundles and wide interruptions in the nerve fibers.
Increased connective tissue proliferation was seen with a loss of perineurium. Edema was seen in the
endoneurium leading to a disruption of nerve fibers. There was an infiltration with macrophages.
Marked axonal degeneration was seen along with demyelination. Following treatment with 400 mg/kg
of fenugreek + 250 mg/kg of metformin, Section of the nerve showed normal structure similar to that
of the control group.
5.4 Discussion
This study is undertaken to ascertain the pharmacological action of a combination of Trigonella
foenum greacum (Fenugreek) and metformin on alloxan induced diabetic wistar rats. A dose of 400
mg/kg of fenugreek and 250 mg/kg of metformin was administered to diabetic rats and their effects on
lowering blood glucose, lipid profile, liver enzymes, and other relevant hematological parameters
were assessed. The observations were recorded for interpretation. A synergistic effect was observed
when fenugreek was given along with metformin. This is because fenugreek has bioactive compounds
that can effectively cause hypoglycemia.

Burt s Bees Case Analysis
Mary Joy dela Cruz
Management Case: Keeping the Buzz at Burt s and Bees I. Background
Burt s Bees is an American personal care products company that describes itself as an Earth friendly,
Natural Personal Care Company making products for personal care, health, beauty, and personal
hygiene. As of 2007, they manufactured over 197 products for facial and body skin care, lip care, hair
care, baby care, men s grooming, and outdoor remedies[1] distributed in nearly 30,000 retail outlets
including grocery stores and drug store chains across different countries. The original vision of Burt s

But just as Ben amp; Jerry s has tried to stay true to its roots after being purchased by Unilever, Burt s
Bees is, by all accounts, still driven by its founding mission: to create natural, Earth friendly personal
care products formulated to help you maximize your well being and that of the world around you.
Only now, thanks to deep pockets and Clorox s distribution machine, it might push the industry
towards all natural even faster.
Brand identity is an important action to branding. It is what the consumers are expected to perceive a
company s product and its brand. With Brand identity, Burt s Bees could distinguish it from other
competitors, and highlight its brand and products characteristic to create and maintain the competitive
advantage.
IV. Recommendation
Burt s Bees is in the growth stage. Together with the market s strong interest in environmental
awareness today, Burt s Bees has a great potential however, it must be accompanied by great
advertisements and not just through social media.
I recommend on a rebranding strategy to increase and strengthen the brand with the long term aim of
expanding the brand within the mass market. I believe that the number one issue for Burt s Bees is to
grow the brand without compromising the product i.e. ingredients. Burt Bee s can still use the concept
of the for the Greater Good but with much better

The Pathological Body Analysis
In Gemma Blackshaw s The Pathological Body: Modernist Strategizing in Egon Schiele s Self
Portraiture she relates the stylistic qualities of Schiele s paintings to images found in medical journals
that were popular in Germany during the same time Schiele was creating works of art. These journals
and the image of his sick and dying father could both be reasons to why Schiele s stylistic change is
one that shows his figures as diseased and often frail (unlike his own healthy body). Rather than try
and find some inward reason to why Schiele s style shift in the early 1910 s away from Klimt s style;
Blackshaw looks for meaning elsewhere to why there is a sudden shift in his artwork. She brings up
this market also to be a reason behind Schiele s shift in style however the focus for the frame of these

Failures Of The Articles Of Confederation
In 1776, the Declaration of Independence, drafted by Thomas Jefferson, was formally adopted. The
American Revolution had already been going on with the battles of Lexington and Concord over a
year prior, but the first government of the United States is the Articles of Confederation, a constitution
based on Republican ideas and democracy. The Continental Congress approved the Articles of
Confederation in 1777. It was adopted, written by John Dickinson, but there was a delay in ratifying it
by the states. States like Virginia and Massachusetts had claimed a bunch of land stretching from the
East Coast all the way to the Pacific Ocean as part of their colonial charters. States like Maryland and
Pennsylvania, who did not have these land claims, did not want to ratify this new national government
until the land is relinquished. It was not until in 1781 when the states officially ratified the Articles of
Confederation. From 1781 to 1789, the Articles of Confederation failed and had created problems in
political, economic, and foreign policies, making this new national government an ineffective
government. The Articles of Confederation is a

I really enjoyed the fact that Deval Patrick did not just lecture the audience but told stories of his own
past and integrated many valuable lessons that tied back to Dr. King s ideals within his stories. He
shared his struggles as a child, fighting to make ends meet. He was supported and guided by his

and suspension of African American youths in Massachusetts. He replied that educational success
does not depend on one path. Small classes matter. A student s behavior of misconduct may be due to
the fact that the child is hungry, distracted or scared. It is vital to realize that children are hungry for
the attention of adults to notice them care for them and love them something that they may not be

Plagiarism And Cheating
Students involving in Plagiarism and Cheating should be punished
Academic dishonesty in more advanced education systems is not a new occurrence. The alarming
frequency of the cases of academic dishonesty on colleges and schools requires more innovative
means of remedying the concern. Based on the author of Lang, M. James How College Classes
Encourage Cheating The Boston Globe. Academic dishonesty refers to types of plagiarism and
cheating that entails learners receiving or offering unapproved support in an academic practice or
attaining recognition or praise for a piece that is not theirs (Lang, M. James). Cheating can be defined
as deliberately applying or trying to apply unapproved information, materials, or study supports in an
academic practice. On the other hand, plagiarism refers to the intentional reproduction or adoption of
words or ideas or sentences of another individual as one s own with no attribution. Cheating conduct
in colleges and schools across the globe is not new. The behavior can be drawn back thousands of
years ago. For instance, in the Republic of China, there was a case of cheating in which the civil
service tests were conducted in single partitions to curb examinees from viewing the test papers of
their fellows (Lang). Therefore, the academic dishonesty is a serious intellectual and moral problem,
and those who involve in plagiarism and cheating should be punished.
Firstly, plagiarism is a moral problem. This dishonesty, which involves taking

The State Of The Electoral College
Tyranny naturally arises out of democracy. These words from the Greek philosopher Plato summarize
the most fundamental concern of the delegates to the Constitutional Convention when they considered
what the best way to conduct presidential elections would be. While, in concept, democracy sounds
like the fairest form of government, in practice, it is less than ideal. Fear of tyranny of the majority
prompted discussion over how the president should be elected. The Founders chose the Electoral
College which incorporates democracy, federalism, and republicanism for presidential selection,
because it provided for the best balance of power. The Electoral College was the product of no small
amount of debate during the Constitutional ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While he agreed that the sense of the people should operate in the choice of the [president], he made
clear the importance of afford[ing] as little opportunity as possible to tumult and disorder. This would
require the will of the people to be tempered by an intermediate body of electors. Not only would this
be a compromise between the competing ideas in the Constitutional Convention, it would prevent any
one group from having undue discretion when it came to electing the most powerful person in
government. Of these competing ideas, two are prominently reflected in the Electoral College. The
first is democracy, an idea largely advanced by Alexis de Tocqueville in Democracy in America.
Democracy, loosely defined as the direct representation of people in government, seems the most
logical way to conduct an election. The second is federalism. Understanding how this could become
problematic, the founders decided to include states in the election process. According to Federalist 68,
this would allow the people of each State [to] choose a number of persons as electors...who shall
assemble...and vote for some fit person as President. This balance of individual and state discretion
would soon be codified in Article 2, Section 1 of the Constitution.
The Electoral College has remained steadfast in our ever changing world. What

Prostate cancer is now the most common cancer in men in the UK and the second highest cause of
male cancer death. Yet despite its high prevalence it is also highly survivable, with figures from
Cancer Research UK showing that 84 per cent of men diagnosed with the disease survive ten years or

With such a high survival rate would be easy to assume that the needs of this patient group are being

Social Studies Reflection
The performing arts and social studies integration lesson I taught went well. My students met the math
objective of identifying a multitude of shapes, regardless of their overall size, orientation, color, and
other non defining attributes. Additionally, my students learned details about the history of Halloween,
fulfilling my social studies objective. For my first lesson, learning the history of Halloween, I had
planned for my students to compare and contrast traditions now vs. then., meeting the C3 framework
standard D2.His.2.K 2. Compare life in the past to life today. Students were supposed to sort traditions
as past, present, or both past and present. This was also related to my assessment. While answering a
journal prompt, K 2 students were supposed to describe their favorite tradition and identify if it is a
past, present, or past and present tradition. Fourth grader students would point to details on our KWL
chart, iPad, and picture cards. I provided sentence frames for them to assist their writing.
Unfortunately, I ran out of time, and we did not get to sorting. Therefore, fourth grade students had the
same assessment as everyone else. I believe there are pros and cons to this. I designed my assessment
to offer more differentiation and meet students ability levels. However, I feel that there are benefits in
allowing them to participate in the same way as everyone else and practice their handwriting by
tracing full sentences, rather than a few words. The

Faulty Truths In William Faulkner s Interview
William Faulkner s denial of differentiating between the factual truth and undeterminable knowledge
deviates readers attention from the direct significance of characters state of mind, which also
introduces an additional concept of their apparent insanity.
A reader of Faulkner s work possesses faulty truths, which are nothing but mere constructive
assumptions that have been built upon through a series of events taking place in the story. It is often
difficult to comprehend what message Faulkner is trying to convey, hence the blurry border between
truth and assumption becomes evident. Regardless, he still refuses to further explain himself. For
instance, during an interview, Jean Stein asked Faulkner, Some people say they can t understand your
writing, even after they read it two or three times. What approach would you suggest for them? to
which he responds, Read it four times (Faulkner Interview ). Faulkner is suggesting much more.
Not only is the contrast of truth and assumption a reoccurring theme, but it is also represented by
many of Faulkner s fictional characters, settings, and plot events. This representation is also a key
factoring in diverting a reader s attention. For instance, in the case of Faulkner s fictional setting,

What Does The Flowers Symbolize In Paul s Case
In Willa Cather s, Paul s Case , several different references are made within the story in relation to
flowers. In many cases, the flowers resemble life and the journeys that one goes through. On the other
hand, flowers resemble death and how easily it can creep up on a person. Both these symbols can be
recognized in the story of the young protagonist; However, the true reason the flowers are so
prominent in the story is to resemble, and therefore predict, the life of Paul. Like the flowers, Paul will
bloom and prosper and be beautiful, but if the flowers spend too much time trying to live in a non

short lived and eventually had to come to an end sometime. Likewise, the flowers had tried to live in a
season to which they had not belonged, mocking it behind a glass case. Paul had done the same; trying

Skeleton Key Quotes
First off, Alex is clever and curious in the book Skeleton Key. He was clever throughout the book so
far. At the start of the book it says, He ran on tip toe... Now was the time to move (Horowitz 135 136).
This quotes explains that he was on a yacht and saw that one of his partners was in trouble and being
held hostage. Alex thought a diversion quickly, which was to set the yacht on fire. His goal was to get
everyone outside to help put out the fire while Alex and his partner escaped without being seen. It
went exactly as planned, but the boss was still in the room and he had to kill him to save his partner.
Further, the second reason he is clever is how he fought the security guard. During the fight he is

The last reason he is clever was for a situations on the plane. The book says, Wait a minute... asking

Biblical Allusion During The Romantic Age
Biblical allusion during the Romantic Age was not uncommon. Because Biblical images and
references were in the minds of most Romantic readers, a poet would often use this strategy to
contextualize an assertion being made. Wordsworth is no different. However, the level to which he
uses this technique within his poetry fluctuates. The Ruined Cottage only contains two obvious
examples, while Michael is rich with Biblical imagery and allusion. Because of this difference, the
Biblical allusion within the two poems will be discussed within three categories those which are
concerned with a connection to nature, those which inspire the hope of salvation, and those which deal
with the creation and deterioration of covenants. Delving first into ... Show more content on

She is presented as greedy and neglectful of the inherent spirituality in things, and possibly had false
intentions behind sending Luke away. It seems this is a warning from Wordsworth. It is also valuable
to note that Michael s troubles begin when his nephew defaults on a loan. However, the poem never
labels him as nephew but instead, his brother s son (211). If Michael s name is meant to conjure the
name of the archangel Michael, it can t be ignored that one of the brothers of that archangel is Satan.
Viewing the name this way creates a parallel which makes Michael s nephew a quasi son of evil.
Because of the nephew s industrious life (212), he is disconnected from the land and therefore amoral.
With these instances of naming, Wordsworth seems to be commenting on how morality is connected
to living life by means of nature rather than by means of material or industry. Turning now to allusions
that inspire hope, we look towards Robert s Sunday clothes in The Ruined Cottage. Still in its place.
His Sunday garments hung / Upon the self same nail, his very staff / Stood undisturbed behind the

People Conform To The Environment In Malcolm Gladwell s...
The general argument made by author Malcolm Gladwell in his work, Power of Context, is that
people conform to their environment. More specifically, Gladwell argues that environment is what
controls how and why a person reacts to a certain situation. He writes, The Broken Windows Theory.
In this passage, Gladwell is suggesting that if ones community is poor then people will tend to make
poor decisions. In conclusion, Gladwell s belief is that little tipping points will slowly and effectively
change the environment they live in.
I believe, The Broken Windows theory plays an enormous role in the environment around oneself.
Due to the fact that the train station choose to clean every single one of the carts that came through
and placing security guards at stations to not allow people to sneak into the trains. By doing these
things, this did not manipulate the on goers that saw this but it allowed everyone to see how to be a
role model. These little things that the Gunn and William Bratton choose to do set the community up
for excellence rather than failure.
Gladwell states that if Goetz would have met up with the four young black men in a different place the
shooting most likely would not have taken place. Because the train station was treated like trash Goetz
first off had the feeling beforehand to carry a gun onto the train. By paying attention to such little
details such as the graffiti it could change the mindset of many of the hoodlums around. Malcom says
that Gunn drew up a new management structure and a precise set of goals and timetables aimed at
cleaning the systems line by line, train by train. He started with the number seven train that connects
Queens to midtown Manhattan, and began experimenting with new techniques to clean off the paint.
He also states that Gunn is going to be religious about cleaning every train.
Gladwell believes that human behavior is more fully formed due to the community around. You can
try to adapt to a different cultures but you are just going to fall right into what the people are doing
around you. If the people around you are committing crimes, then you are tempted to do the exact
same thing. Gladwell states, It says that crime is

The Carleton Prize For Biotechnology Nomination
The Carleton Prize for Biotechnology Nomination
Alexander Fleming, a name often connected to the evolution of medicine. Perhaps one of the most
impactful and influential scientific researchers of the 20th century thus making him the most
deserving to receive The Carleton Prize for Biotechnology. Providing enormous advances in the
understanding of human biology through his findings of Lysozyme and Benzyl penicillin (The Nobel
Foundation, 1945). Lysozyme has acted as a stepping stool for scientists in further understanding the
human immune system and Benzyl penicillin later transformed into one of the most vastly used
antibiotics in human history. He and his co scientists (Howard Florey and Ernst Boris Chain) were
recognized by receiving the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
What Fleming was particularly interested in was the concept that even though people do obtain
bacterial infections at times, majority of the time the human body prevents bacterial infections from
affecting the body. During this researching period, Fleming graduated St. Mary s Medical School once
again with a Bachelor of Bacteriology at the same time receiving the gold medal for the top student
(Maurois, 1956). In 1914 Fleming concluded his research under Almroth Wright s guidance and
unknowingly continued his journey on to becoming the man with the answer to the biggest human
health issue at the time (Maurois, 1956)
In a time when antibiotics were not up to par with bacterial infections, someone, somewhere, needed
to find the answer to getting rid of the bacterial infections that were killing people all over the world.
Bacterial Meningitis was causing children to die or obtain a permanent disease, strep throat,
pneumonia, laryngitis, ear infections were travelling to the brain (2006). That was just the start of the
infections that were causing serious illness or death of people everywhere. Bacteria reproduces at
hyper speed and no proper treatments were discovered. So, who would this miracle person be? In
1914, during World War I, Alexander Fleming joined the army and became a Captain in the Royal
Army Medicals Corps where he worked as a

The National Bird Of Uganda
Uganda is in east central Africa. Its capital is Kampala. The flag of Uganda is very different from ours
in America but the flag consists of six equal horizontal strips, black, yellow, red repeating from the top
to bottom. At the center is a white circle that has a crested crane which is the national bird of Uganda.
They even have a anthem which goes like this, O Uganda! May God Uphold Thee . Some important
holidays in Uganda are New Year s Day, Labor Day, Independence Day, Christmas Day, Boxing Day,
Easter Day, and more. It s very short and simple if you ask me. But any who, their currency is

They also have dances in Uganda which are important parts to ceremonies and special occasions. They
have different people that make up different dances, so the creativity of the dances is great to see in
different traditions. The most popular, recognizable dance would be the Kiganda, where the
performers move only their lower bodies to the drum beat. The dance is a pretty trick dance but many
people catch on and turns it into whatever they would like to make it. The dance has many different
faces but the known one is performed for the Baganda King. The dances tie into the religion of the
people who live in Uganda. Over four fifths of Ugandans are Christians, either Protestant or Catholic.
They are strong in their faith and traditional beliefs. Other than praying to God, Christians and
Muslims, people also consult a local oracle/healer. Around 10% are Muslims, a legacy of the Arab
traders who traveled to Uganda in the 19th century. Many Ugandans prayed and praised if they need
food or clothes.
Uganda is a presidential republic which means that whoever is president of Uganda is head of state
and head of government. The head of government (President) is HE Mr Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. He
controls what happens and what rules are enforced. He does not control the people s every move but
he does monitor just like any government would. There is a constitution as well that provides for a
unitary republic and the President appoints a cabinet as

Battle At Trenton Research Paper
The Battle at Trenton, probably one of the most significant battles of the American Revolutionary War,
was a resounding victory for the Continental Army. General George Washington, commander of the
Continental Army, was the victor more on the sheer complacency of British Commanding General
James Grant and Colonel Johann Rall, Trenton Garrison Commander. December 25 and 26, 1776, will
live in infamy for the British. Even though the battle was not a resounding crush to the British forces,
General Lord Charles Cornwallis, General James Grant and General William Howe, had made a
strategic mistake and now handed the upper hand to the Continental Army. It was a resounding victory
for General George Washington, not only for morale but also because the gained strategic winter
positioning. Yet all should have been for not. Had the British and their allied forces, the Hessians, used
intelligence assets that were available at that time, General Washington would have lost the battle, and
subsequently the war. Through ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
General Washington knew the importance of good intelligence, of which Honeyman played a major
role. Honeyman, an Irishman who had served the British in previous wars, had earned the trust of the
British. Which allowed him to move in and around Trenton without fear of persecution. However,
Honeyman was a sympathizer to the Colonials, and reported intelligence information directly to
General Washington. Prior to the battle, Honeyman had arranged his own capture by the Colonial
Army, where he reported the bad state of the Garrison Trenton. He reported that Colonel Rall s men
were less than 2,000 that were supplied by a small amount of heavy guns. With the help of General
Washington, Honeyman escaped the Colonial Army and reported back to Colonel Rall. He led the
commander of the Garrison to believe that the Colonial Army was in no state to attack any time soon

Tragic Events Of The Holocaust
The Holocaust Imagine being a small child taken from your home to a camp with people being treated
poorly and unfair. You see things like very skinny people that are being starved, people doing forced
labor, and people maybe dieing right in front of your eyes. The Holocaust was an important part of
history where Germans targeted people like Jews, Gypsies, homosexuals, and more. and murdered
them. The Holocaust is a very important event that happened in World War ll and will forever be a

Paul s Glasses In Out Of Focus By Tangerine
Paul Fisher has had glasses for at least half of his life. The cause for most of the story was he looked at
an eclipse, but that wasn t the case. We later figured out it was his brother Erik. The effect of Erik was
glasses. Having glasses caused some not so good things to happen to Paul. All together, Paul s glasses
fit perfectly in the center of a cause and effect chart. Before Tangerine technically started, the reader
was told what was said to have happened to Paul. In the section called Out of Focus , which does not
have a page number, it says, The fact is we did have an eclipse that summer, around three weeks
before school started. Based on that, Erik was telling his friends this story: The reason for the Coke

Essay Characters in A Thief Of Time By Tony Hillerman
In A Thief of Time, Tony Hillerman s characters display perspectives of diverse cultural backgrounds.
In Jim Chee and Joe Leaphorn we see a shared heritage, as well as their contrasting points of view
which stem from choosing different values to live by. Quite a few characters in Hillerman s book, who
are not of Navajo blood, connect themselves with Navajo culture through digs, collection, and
personal gain. This essay will briefly touch on the view points of three characters; Jim Chee, Joe
Leaphorn, and Richard DuMont. In these three, we are able to see a variety of cultural angles and
values through their interactions with a single interface, death. The differences between Jim Chee and
Joe Leaphorn are blatantly apparent ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In refuting the practicality of Navajo traditions it is easier for him to ignore them. In Jim Chee,
Leaphorn sees a path which is the polar opposite of his own. Chee seemed to think an island of
180,000 Navajos could live the old way in a white ocean Not practical. Navajos had to compete in
the real world. The Navajo Way didn t teach competition. Far from it, ( 227). In Leaphorn s character
we are able to see the turmoil that arises when one doesn t have defined values. Without Emma in his
physical life he is unable to ignore the empty space where cultural and religious connections would
normally reside. After a year of dealing with his wife s death, Leaphorn assesses the option of using
the practices of his Navajo predecessors. And Emma s laughter. It was everywhere he looked. He
should sell the house or burn it. Abandon the house contaminated by the death, lest the ghost sickness
infect you and you died. Wise were the elders of his people.. But instead, he would play this pointless
game, ( 63). Because Leaphorn does not side with the Christian religion and declines the use of
Navajo traditions, he lacks the external support required to find closure with death. . In Richard
DuMont s character we see a collectors perspective on death warped by the hunt for personal gain. His
need for an impressive tale overshadows any feelings of sorrow he might feel for the murdered
pothunters. DuMont, unlike the anthropologists in the book, sees

Sizwe Bansi Demonstrates the Imperative for the Black...
Sizwe Bansi demonstrates the imperative for the black person in South Africa to be an actor to present
an enforcedly acceptable mask to his or her white masters (crow). Discuss the relationship between
acting and identity in two plays on the course.
Identity and acting are massive themes within both Sizwe Bansi Is Dead and Death And The Kings
Horseman. In both plays, the black people are enforced by the whites to behave in a certain way. Some
do this In order to live an easy life or for other reasons such as survival or to provide for there
families, but some resist by retaining there cultural values, or revolting. But the relationship between
acting and identity is of great importance, as within both books there is resistance and ... Show more

Also, In Death And The Kings Horseman, it shows that Elusin see s Pilkings as a white man who stole
his first born son Olunde and rather than say educate him, he says so you could turn him into
something of your own image (Soyinka 1998, 68). Which is an important statement to show the black
feeling towards the white man and what they are doing to the black man. This statement shows that
Elusin thinks that, the white man is not educating or showing the black man new things and culture,
but they are turning them into an image. The word image is important as it could mean that they are
turning into them into a copy or a non real version. As an image isn t the actual thing, this could be
interpreted as that the white man is instilling a false identity on the black man, making them act in a
certain way. It symbolises that Elusin who is a leader so he speaks for his followers, believes that the
white culture being instilled on the black culture is not a real form of identity, so ultimately the blacks
are also disregarding the whites as an actual identity. So it could be argued that here in what Elusin
states shows an opinion much like the whites on the black identity and culture. I speak about culture as
identity as it seems that within both plays, ones own culture and heritage is there identity. For example
Sizwe Bansi inherited his name and is reluctant to lose it, and in Death and The Kings Horseman,
Olusin commits

How Is The Monkey s Pow Similar
Stories share both similarities and of course differences . In the story, The Monkey s Paw by W.W.
Jacobs, the character Mr. White ends up wasting the three wishes he got by changing things back to
the way things already were after his first wish. In the story, The Third Wish by Joan Aiken, the main
character, Mr. Peters, wishes for a wife and it comes true, but he wishes her back to a swan, which is
what she was before. These stories share both similarities and differences between the motifs of the
story and the resolutions of the story. The motif of each story, the use of magic, is used similarly and
used differently as well. The first example of similarities, is that both stories used wishes coming true
in coincidental way as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
White s first wish was for two hundred pounds. In The Third Wish Mr. Peters wishes for a gorgeous
wife and got what he wanted when he meets her the very next day but, Mr. Peters then figures out that
it was a swan he changed. A similarity can be seen because they both had their magic happen in
awkward ways that were very unexpected. The second example is both stories had some sort of good
luck piece that activated the magic. Like in The Monkey s Paw the talisman for activating the wishes
was of course the Monkey s Paw. The talisman that represented each wish in The Third Wish was
three leaves. The only way in the two stories to get the magic was to have some sort of talisman to
trigger the magic which is a similarity. There is also differences of how the magic is involved in each
story. In The Monkey s Paw the magical thing that had to happen to save Mr. and Mrs. White was to
wish for there son to be dead again after they wished him alive. W.W Jacobs writes He heard the
creaking of the bolt as it came slowly back, and at the same moment he found the monkey s paw, and
frantically breathed his third and last wish (online). This shows that his last wish was for

  • 2. Hellenistic Analysis Alexander brought to the conquered land the Greeks, and with them the Greek culture. The people of these lands had to adapt to the changing views and adopted the Greek language in order to better understand each other. However, Hellenism was the blending of different cultures, like Egyptian, Persian, Indian and the Greeks, that would bring diversity to these conquered lands. A city becoming Hellenised meant that the locals had come into contact with the Greeks and knowledge of the Greek culture, language and literature. In conjunction with philosophers, who views of religion, was somewhat outside the normal views, meaning that they challenged the significance of religious views, perhaps in an attempt to undermine these new religions. The more traditional Jews found the Greeks offensive, with men strutting around naked in the gyms for all to see, and it was against the Jewish laws to be seen naked. Because of their nakedness the Jews could also see that some men were uncircumcised, which was again offensive to the Jewish society for they considered them as unclean and impure. Furthermore, the Greeks ability to make better deals and profit also upset the Jews. Not only that, but they further disliked the fact that the Greeks spilling swine blood for sacrifices to their Pagan Gods, especially when swine was taboo in the Jewish culture. Another thing to consider too was that the more extreme Jews, did not like the idea of their brethren taking on a more Hellenistic lifestyle, as they were scared that their God would punish them for such an act. Eventually they rebelled against the Hellenistic way due to Antiochus IV stealing from their sacred temple and forcing the Jewish people to make sacrifices to the Pagan Gods. Evolution also has some true undeniable facts as well. As we learn more and more every day, those facts tend to change though, unlike creationism which has stayed the same since the beginning of time. It is unfair that something is being taught without even being put into question or put up to another opinion of why the Earth is here and how it got here. An example could be that in school, teachers should not teach you about what political party they agree with and why that party is right. They should be talking about both parties and giving both sides of the story and saying why they disagree. This would show that they want you to be nonbiased and try to let you pick for yourself instead of pushing you to side with their opinions. It is not right to only teach children, or anybody for that matter only one view of an argument. Both sides should be taught in a way that is the least biased and let the kids decide for themselves what is right or wrong. Whatever they choose, we need to support them even if it is against what we believe. The most important thing we can do for our kids is to teach them to think for themselves. Virginia pine is now considered a valuable tree species with many uses such as wildlife habitat, Christmas tree production, wood uses, reclaimed areas, etc. (Carter and Snow Jr. 1990). According to research done on the behavior of woodpeckers in forested stands, such as Virginia pine, it was found that the forest stands contribute to woodpecker habitat and that they need proper management to keep providing habitat in the future (Crawford and Conner 1974). A key feature of Virginia pine is that as the tree ages it is prone to wood softening due to fungal decay (Carter and Snow Jr. 1990). This allows the woodpeckers to create nesting habitat within the trees bole. Another aspect of Virginia pine is that it provides a source of food to many bird species, including woodpeckers. • 18. The Fundamental Principles Of The Us Constitution One of the fundamental principles of the US Constitution is the freedom of speech. Something so ingrained in the country, that it is often an afterthought for many Americans. John Stuart Mill believes that freedom of expression and speech is a necessity for the human race to advance and evolve. Mill s justification of this absolute freedom come from the understanding that mistakes and choices made by the person leads to progress and the development of your individual self. He also argues that speech must be absolute because the only way harm can truly come about, is through action. Mill s harm principle states that, the only reason for power to be legitimately exercised over a people is to prevent harm to others. It also sought to limit the actions of a possible tyrannical majority that begins to impose its interests on the public. Mill claims that the only limit that should be placed on expression is if it leads to the harms of others, it is not to be infringed upon if it only harms the individual. James Madison agreed with many of the concepts of Mill s free speech, but thought a limit on speech was a sign of a breach of power, which was reflected in the drafting of the First Amendment. These journals and the image of his sick and dying father could both be reasons to why Schiele s stylistic change is one that shows his figures as diseased and often frail (unlike his own healthy body). Rather than try and find some inward reason to why Schiele s style shift in the early 1910 s away from Klimt s style; Blackshaw looks for meaning elsewhere to why there is a sudden shift in his artwork. The American Revolution had already been going on with the battles of Lexington and Concord over a year prior, but the first government of the United States is the Articles of Confederation, a constitution based on Republican ideas and democracy. The Continental Congress approved the Articles of Confederation in 1777. It was adopted, written by John Dickinson, but there was a delay in ratifying it by the states. States like Virginia and Massachusetts had claimed a bunch of land stretching from the East Coast all the way to the Pacific Ocean as part of their colonial charters. States like Maryland and Pennsylvania, who did not have these land claims, did not want to ratify this new national government until the land is relinquished. It was not until in 1781 when the states officially ratified the Articles of Confederation. From 1781 to 1789, the Articles of Confederation failed and had created problems in political, economic, and foreign policies, making this new national government an ineffective government. • 27. Plagiarism And Cheating Students involving in Plagiarism and Cheating should be punished Academic dishonesty in more advanced education systems is not a new occurrence. The alarming frequency of the cases of academic dishonesty on colleges and schools requires more innovative means of remedying the concern. Based on the author of Lang, M. James How College Classes Encourage Cheating The Boston Globe. Academic dishonesty refers to types of plagiarism and cheating that entails learners receiving or offering unapproved support in an academic practice or attaining recognition or praise for a piece that is not theirs (Lang, M. James). Cheating can be defined as deliberately applying or trying to apply unapproved information, materials, or study supports in an academic practice. On the other hand, plagiarism refers to the intentional reproduction or adoption of words or ideas or sentences of another individual as one s own with no attribution. Cheating conduct in colleges and schools across the globe is not new. The behavior can be drawn back thousands of years ago. For instance, in the Republic of China, there was a case of cheating in which the civil service tests were conducted in single partitions to curb examinees from viewing the test papers of their fellows (Lang). Therefore, the academic dishonesty is a serious intellectual and moral problem, and those who involve in plagiarism and cheating should be punished. Firstly, plagiarism is a moral problem. • 28. The State Of The Electoral College Tyranny naturally arises out of democracy. These words from the Greek philosopher Plato summarize the most fundamental concern of the delegates to the Constitutional Convention when they considered what the best way to conduct presidential elections would be. While, in concept, democracy sounds like the fairest form of government, in practice, it is less than ideal. Fear of tyranny of the majority prompted discussion over how the president should be elected. The Founders chose the Electoral College which incorporates democracy, federalism, and republicanism for presidential selection, because it provided for the best balance of power. While he agreed that the sense of the people should operate in the choice of the [president], he made clear the importance of afford[ing] as little opportunity as possible to tumult and disorder. This would require the will of the people to be tempered by an intermediate body of electors. Not only would this be a compromise between the competing ideas in the Constitutional Convention, it would prevent any one group from having undue discretion when it came to electing the most powerful person in government. Of these competing ideas, two are prominently reflected in the Electoral College. The first is democracy, an idea largely advanced by Alexis de Tocqueville in Democracy in America. Democracy, loosely defined as the direct representation of people in government, seems the most logical way to conduct an election. The second is federalism. Understanding how this could become problematic, the founders decided to include states in the election process. According to Federalist 68, this would allow the people of each State [to] choose a number of persons as electors...who shall assemble...and vote for some fit person as President. This balance of individual and state discretion would soon be codified in Article 2, Section 1 of the Constitution. The Electoral College has remained steadfast in our ever changing world. What ... Faulty Truths In William Faulkner s Interview William Faulkner s denial of differentiating between the factual truth and undeterminable knowledge deviates readers attention from the direct significance of characters state of mind, which also introduces an additional concept of their apparent insanity. A reader of Faulkner s work possesses faulty truths, which are nothing but mere constructive assumptions that have been built upon through a series of events taking place in the story. It is often difficult to comprehend what message Faulkner is trying to convey, hence the blurry border between truth and assumption becomes evident. Regardless, he still refuses to further explain himself. For instance, during an interview, Jean Stein asked Faulkner, Some people say they can t understand your writing, even after they read it two or three times. Because Biblical images and references were in the minds of most Romantic readers, a poet would often use this strategy to contextualize an assertion being made. Wordsworth is no different. It is also valuable to note that Michael s troubles begin when his nephew defaults on a loan. However, the poem never labels him as nephew but instead, his brother s son (211). If Michael s name is meant to conjure the name of the archangel Michael, it can t be ignored that one of the brothers of that archangel is Satan. Viewing the name this way creates a parallel which makes Michael s nephew a quasi son of evil. Because of the nephew s industrious life (212), he is disconnected from the land and therefore amoral. With these instances of naming, Wordsworth seems to be commenting on how morality is connected to living life by means of nature rather than by means of material or industry. More specifically, Gladwell argues that environment is what controls how and why a person reacts to a certain situation. He writes, The Broken Windows Theory. In this passage, Gladwell is suggesting that if ones community is poor then people will tend to make poor decisions. In conclusion, Gladwell s belief is that little tipping points will slowly and effectively change the environment they live in. I believe, The Broken Windows theory plays an enormous role in the environment around oneself. Due to the fact that the train station choose to clean every single one of the carts that came through and placing security guards at stations to not allow people to sneak into the trains. By doing these things, this did not manipulate the on goers that saw this but it allowed everyone to see how to be a role model. These little things that the Gunn and William Bratton choose to do set the community up for excellence rather than failure. Gladwell states that if Goetz would have met up with the four young black men in a different place the shooting most likely would not have taken place. Because the train station was treated like trash Goetz first off had the feeling beforehand to carry a gun onto the train. By paying attention to such little details such as the graffiti it could change the mindset of many of the hoodlums around. He started with the number seven train that connects Queens to midtown Manhattan, and began experimenting with new techniques to clean off the paint. He also states that Gunn is going to be religious about cleaning every train. Gladwell believes that human behavior is more fully formed due to the community around. • 44. Paul s Glasses In Out Of Focus By Tangerine Paul Fisher has had glasses for at least half of his life. The cause for most of the story was he looked at an eclipse, but that wasn t the case. We later figured out it was his brother Erik. The effect of Erik was glasses. Having glasses caused some not so good things to happen to Paul. All together, Paul s glasses fit perfectly in the center of a cause and effect chart. Before Tangerine technically started, the reader was told what was said to have happened to Paul. In the section called Out of Focus , which does not have a page number, it says, The fact is we did have an eclipse that summer, around three weeks before school started. • 45. Essay Characters in A Thief Of Time By Tony Hillerman In A Thief of Time, Tony Hillerman s characters display perspectives of diverse cultural backgrounds. In Jim Chee and Joe Leaphorn we see a shared heritage, as well as their contrasting points of view which stem from choosing different values to live by. Quite a few characters in Hillerman s book, who are not of Navajo blood, connect themselves with Navajo culture through digs, collection, and personal gain. This essay will briefly touch on the view points of three characters; Jim Chee, Joe Leaphorn, and Richard DuMont. In these three, we are able to see a variety of cultural angles and values through their interactions with a single interface, death. The differences between Jim Chee and Joe Leaphorn are blatantly apparent ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In refuting the practicality of Navajo traditions it is easier for him to ignore them. In Jim Chee, Leaphorn sees a path which is the polar opposite of his own. Chee seemed to think an island of 180,000 Navajos could live the old way in a white ocean Not practical. Navajos had to compete in the real world. The Navajo Way didn t teach competition. Far from it, ( 227). In Leaphorn s character we are able to see the turmoil that arises when one doesn t have defined values. Without Emma in his physical life he is unable to ignore the empty space where cultural and religious connections would normally reside. After a year of dealing with his wife s death, Leaphorn assesses the option of using the practices of his Navajo predecessors. And Emma s laughter. It was everywhere he looked. He should sell the house or burn it. Abandon the house contaminated by the death, lest the ghost sickness infect you and you died. Wise were the elders of his people.. But instead, he would play this pointless game, ( 63). Because Leaphorn does not side with the Christian religion and declines the use of Navajo traditions, he lacks the external support required to find closure with death. . In Richard DuMont s character we see a collectors perspective on death warped by the hunt for personal gain. His need for an impressive tale overshadows any feelings of sorrow he might feel for the murdered pothunters. DuMont, unlike the anthropologists in the book, sees ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 46. Sizwe Bansi Demonstrates the Imperative for the Black... Sizwe Bansi demonstrates the imperative for the black person in South Africa to be an actor to present an enforcedly acceptable mask to his or her white masters (crow). Discuss the relationship between acting and identity in two plays on the course. Identity and acting are massive themes within both Sizwe Bansi Is Dead and Death And The Kings Horseman. In both plays, the black people are enforced by the whites to behave in a certain way. Some do this In order to live an easy life or for other reasons such as survival or to provide for there families, but some resist by retaining there cultural values, or revolting. But the relationship between acting and identity is of great importance, as within both books there is resistance and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Also, In Death And The Kings Horseman, it shows that Elusin see s Pilkings as a white man who stole his first born son Olunde and rather than say educate him, he says so you could turn him into something of your own image (Soyinka 1998, 68). Which is an important statement to show the black feeling towards the white man and what they are doing to the black man. This statement shows that Elusin thinks that, the white man is not educating or showing the black man new things and culture, but they are turning them into an image. The word image is important as it could mean that they are turning into them into a copy or a non real version. As an image isn t the actual thing, this could be interpreted as that the white man is instilling a false identity on the black man, making them act in a certain way. It symbolises that Elusin who is a leader so he speaks for his followers, believes that the white culture being instilled on the black culture is not a real form of identity, so ultimately the blacks are also disregarding the whites as an actual identity. So it could be argued that here in what Elusin states shows an opinion much like the whites on the black identity and culture. I speak about culture as identity as it seems that within both plays, ones own culture and heritage is there identity. For example Sizwe Bansi inherited his name and is reluctant to lose it, and in Death and The Kings Horseman, Olusin commits ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 47. How Is The Monkey s Pow Similar Stories share both similarities and of course differences . In the story, The Monkey s Paw by W.W. Jacobs, the character Mr. White ends up wasting the three wishes he got by changing things back to the way things already were after his first wish. In the story, The Third Wish by Joan Aiken, the main character, Mr. Peters, wishes for a wife and it comes true, but he wishes her back to a swan, which is what she was before. These stories share both similarities and differences between the motifs of the story and the resolutions of the story. The motif of each story, the use of magic, is used similarly and used differently as well. The first example of similarities, is that both stories used wishes coming true in coincidental way as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... White s first wish was for two hundred pounds. In The Third Wish Mr. Peters wishes for a gorgeous wife and got what he wanted when he meets her the very next day but, Mr. Peters then figures out that it was a swan he changed. A similarity can be seen because they both had their magic happen in awkward ways that were very unexpected. The second example is both stories had some sort of good luck piece that activated the magic. Like in The Monkey s Paw the talisman for activating the wishes was of course the Monkey s Paw. The talisman that represented each wish in The Third Wish was three leaves. The only way in the two stories to get the magic was to have some sort of talisman to trigger the magic which is a similarity. There is also differences of how the magic is involved in each story. In The Monkey s Paw the magical thing that had to happen to save Mr. and Mrs. White was to wish for there son to be dead again after they wished him alive. W.W Jacobs writes He heard the creaking of the bolt as it came slowly back, and at the same moment he found the monkey s paw, and frantically breathed his third and last wish (online).
