This document provides an introduction to hypothesis testing using the normal distribution to test claims about population means. It defines key terminology used in hypothesis testing such as the null and alternative hypotheses, test statistic, p-value, critical region, significance level, and critical value. It also outlines the four-step process for conducting a hypothesis test which includes stating the question, planning by specifying distributions and hypotheses, solving to calculate test statistics and p-values, and concluding whether to reject or fail to reject the null hypothesis. Examples are provided for left-sided, right-sided, and two-sided hypothesis tests.
